They do not come needing a wash, but some people like to do it. That said, the pillow will puff up a bit, and it will also shrink a bit with a wash as it is 100% cotton. However, if it's purchased with a pillow protector then it doesn't need to be washed at all since the cover can be washed instead and keeps out liquids, etc.! :-) I hope this was helpful!
