12 best generic steering wheel locks
Generic steering wheel locks are security devices designed to prevent unauthorized use of a vehicle by immobilizing the steering wheel. These locks are commonly used as an additional layer of protection against theft and carjacking. Here are some key points about generic steering wheel locks:
Purpose: The primary purpose of a steering wheel lock is to deter thieves from attempting to steal a vehicle. When properly installed, these locks make it extremely difficult for someone to turn the steering wheel and drive the car.
Design: Generic steering wheel locks typically consist of a solid metal bar or rod that extends across the diameter of the steering wheel. They are designed to lock into place, preventing the wheel from being turned.
Ease of Use: These locks are designed to be user-friendly and can be installed by simply extending the bar across the steering wheel and locking it in place. They often come with keys or combination locks.
Visibility: One of the key deterrents of steering wheel locks is their visibility. When potential thieves see a steering wheel lock in place, they are less likely to attempt to steal the vehicle because they know it will take time and effort to remove it.
Compatibility: Generic steering wheel locks are designed to fit a wide range of vehicle types, from small cars to larger trucks and SUVs. However, it's essential to ensure that the lock you choose is compatible with your specific vehicle.
Portability: Many generic steering wheel locks are compact and portable, making them easy to store in the vehicle when not in use. This portability allows for convenient use and storage.
Additional Features: Some steering wheel locks come with additional features, such as alarms or flashing lights, to further deter thieves. These features can alert the owner or bystanders to tampering attempts.
Legal Considerations: It's essential to check the legal regulations in your area regarding the use of steering wheel locks. In some places, there may be restrictions on the types of locks that can be used.
Effectiveness: While steering wheel locks can be an effective deterrent, determined thieves may still find ways to bypass them. Therefore, it's wise to use them in conjunction with other security measures, such as car alarms and immobilizers.
Cost: Generic steering wheel locks are relatively affordable compared to more advanced vehicle security systems. Prices can vary based on the brand, design, and additional features.
Overall, generic steering wheel locks are a simple yet effective way to enhance the security of your vehicle and discourage theft. They are a visible deterrent that can provide peace of mind for vehicle owners concerned about their car's safety.

A Different Lock for Every Wheel
McGard offers multiple wheel lock options that vary in thread size, thread length and color. One important factor that often goes overlooked is the mounting surface type. Some wheels required a cone seat, some require a radius seat and others may require a shank style wheel lock. It is important to match the seat type of the wheel lock with the seat type of the wheel for proper installation.
See comparison chart below to help determine the best wheel lock type for your vehicle and wheel combination.
Step 1
Remove wheel covers (if equipped) and one lug nut/bolt from each wheel. If studs are rusty, clean with a wire brush prior to installing wheel locks. Do not lubricate threads. Note: Wheel locks should always be the last nut/bolt tightened on each wheel and should be the first one loosened.
Step 2
By hand, install one McGard Wheel Lock onto each wheel to replace the lug nut/bolt removed in step 1. Use only one lock per wheel. Note: If original lug nuts/bolts use a washer/plastic cap, be sure to install the washer/plastic cap included in package onto the wheel locks. Notice: Air impact guns should not be used for installation of locks or lug nuts/bolts. Use of an impact gun for installation may cause over tightening resulting in difficulty of removal and permanent damage to the lock and key. Overtightening can also cause damage to brake rotors and wheel seats.
Step 3
Using the McGard key and a lug wrench, tighten each lock to the torque specified in your vehicle owner’s manual. Be sure to keep the key pattern squarely engaged into the lock pattern via direct inward pressure. For best results, use a torque wrench and socket for final tightening. Wheel locks should be re-torqued after 25 miles(40Km) of driving. Newly installed lug nuts/bolts should also be re-torqued.

User questions & answers
Question: | will they fit an 2016 Altima SL |
Answer: | Go to the McGard web site and see what model number fits your car. |
Question: | Hi do these fit on my 1999 Infiniti i |
Answer: | Compare the sizes of your 1999 Infiniti to this product. |
Question: | my car has same lock and same model no, but i lost my key, can i use this key to open the lock |
Answer: | If you have aftermarket wheel locks and you've lost your key, the only way to be sure is to have the lock code identification number from the original packaging you received with the lock. You can order another key with that number. If you bought your car used and the tag for the lock wasn't in your glove box with the Vehicle's owners manual, than the only way to remove the lock is to buy a lock removal tool, or bring it to a garage and have them remove it for you. I hope this helps. I had to replace my locks, and the tag didn't come with my vehicle because I purchased it used. If you have the code number, than your in great shape. |
Question: | I have a 2015 Nissan Xterra Pro4X, will this fit |
Answer: | Assuming you have the OEM wheels. According to the McGard Web Site - www.mcgard.com click the Automotive Tab and Vehicle Application Tab and enter your vehicle - McGard 25154 will fit. M12 X 1.25 is the thread size. Nuts are 1.28 inch tall. They have several to pick from. I have always bought all lugs + locks for a great look. Most M12 OEM Lug Nuts are nasty looking and rusted. Take a look at McGard 84654 - six lug kit. This Pack is a good deal online, cant remember who I bought them from. McGard is the best. |
