14 best wheel bearing greases

Wheel bearing greases play a crucial role in the automotive industry, particularly in maintaining the proper functioning and longevity of wheel bearings. Here are some key points related to lithium-based greases and their use in automotive applications:

  1. Lithium-Based Greases: Lithium complex greases are widely used in automotive applications, including wheel bearings. Lithium provides excellent water resistance and stability over a wide range of temperatures.

  2. Temperature Stability: One of the significant advantages of lithium-based greases is their ability to withstand a broad temperature range. This is important for wheel bearings, as they can experience both high operating temperatures and cold conditions.

  3. Water Resistance: Water resistance is crucial for wheel bearing greases, as these components are exposed to various weather conditions.Lithium-based greases tend to perform well in resisting water washout, preventing corrosion and maintaining effective lubrication.

  4. EP (Extreme Pressure) Properties: Wheel bearings, especially in automotive applications, are subjected to heavy loads and extreme pressure. Lithium complex greases are formulated to provide excellent EP properties, ensuring effective lubrication even under high-pressure conditions.

  5. Compatibility with Seals: Some wheel bearings are equipped with seals to prevent contaminants from entering. Lithium-based greases are often compatible with different types of seals, contributing to the overall reliability of the bearing system.

  6. Long-Term Stability: Lithium complex greases typically offer long-term stability, which is essential for components like wheel bearings that are expected to operate reliably over an extended period without frequent maintenance.

  7. Corrosion Protection: In addition to preventing water ingress, lithium-based greases often have corrosion inhibitors that help protect metal surfaces from rust and corrosion.

  8. NLGI Grade: The National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) grade is a measure of the grease's consistency. For wheel bearing applications, a suitable NLGI grade is typically recommended to ensure proper lubrication.

It's important to note that while lithium-based greases are commonly used, the specific requirements for wheel bearing greases can vary based on the vehicle type, operating conditions, and manufacturer recommendations. Always consult the vehicle's manual and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for the appropriate type and grade of grease for wheel bearings.

User questions & answers

Question: what can i use to remove this grease from the bearings of a machine which requires a food-grade product
Answer: hey there. we use the grease in differentials on our motorcycle trikes ytrikes. if you have a food grade product machinery, try removing the grease with a citrus based cleaner. these are non toxic and will cut the grease. replace the grease with any fda food rated product such as dow corning molycoat
Question: Does this work well in cold temps? What to use on fish house trailer
Answer: I use this in my excavator 30 miles north of Nome Alaska the average temp. in the summer is 53 F goes down to -29 in winter
Question: Can am atv suspension
Answer: If a Can Am has grease zerks then yes you can use it. This a decent high pressure grease. My only fault is it bleeds red oil out of your grease gun all over the place. So you will need to store your grease gun in a plastic bag and be prepared to wipe it down every time you need to use it.
Question: Will this work on garage door components (track, etc) or should I use white lithium grease? Also, what is the differerence between this and WLG
Answer: This product can be considered a "red lithium grease". For your application, it would just be a color difference. However, I don't think grease would be good for garage door tracks because it would attract and hold grit, dust, dirt, etc. Grease would be OK for bearings, but for tracks and wheels a teflon, silicone, or waxy spray would be better, and not as likely to attract dirt.

Question: Is this good to use on wheel bearings
Answer: Yes. I used it to pack my Dana 60 wheel bearings
Question: Does anyone think that the additives in this grease would damage a firearm if used the grease the slides
Answer: Wheaton arms and a few other firearms experts have used it and recommend it., as do some of the USPSA shooters I know. None mentioned any issues. .
Question: Will this stick on someone's hands and make a mess? I need something to stop people from stealing my Trump signs

User questions & answers

Question: what color is the grease
Answer: The color is dark blueish black! If you’re greasing wheel bearings and this grease is different from what is currently in the bearings just make sure to use enough of the new grease to push out the old.( Assuming you have grease fittings as opposed to manually packing bearings)
Question: Would this be slick enough to keep squirrels off my bird feeders
Answer: No. Squirrels are too inventive. You can't keep them off. High velocity projectiles will work on an individual basis, but the body count will exhaust your capacity and inclination to dispose.
Question: is it compatible with lithium base grease
Answer: According to the technical data sheet it's "shear stable" polyurea, which is compatible with lithium, so yes to the question. Regular polyurea isn't. Technical data sheet= http://lucasoil.com/pdf/TDS_XtraHDGrease.pdf Grease compatibility chart= http://www.machinerylubrication.com/Read/1865/grease-compatibility
Question: Is this a lithium base grease or synthetic for high temps applications
Answer: This is NOT lithium base grease. It is conventional Polyurea based (non high shear) and will not mix with Lithium based. I learned all this after talking with John from Lucas Oil and pumping it into my bearings that had lithium in it. For Lithium based, use Red and Tacky

User questions & answers

Question: is it silicon free
Answer: I see no indication that there is any silicone in this grease. Not sure why there would be silicone in any bearing grease, but for sure no silicone in this product.
Question: made in usa
Answer: The container does not specifically give country of manufacture, but I doubt with a Timken product of this quality it does not matter. I really think it is made in the USA, but nothing says it isn’t or is. The address in Ohio is on the can and also a phone number-234-262-3000. Maybe calling them would shed light on this question.
Question: Does anyone know the difference between this and the allstar all78241 timken brand premium red type wheel bearing grease? can they be used together
Answer: I bought the Allstar 78241 and I got the GR224TUB shrink wrapped with a Allstar performance label. I think it’s the same thing.
Question: Would this be No. 0 grade
Answer: No, it's closer to number 2 grease. It's thicker than #0 so it stays in the bearing without slinging out.

User questions & answers

Question: Can anyone tell me how small a bearing could be packed with this tool? Mainly for bicycle bearings. Thanks
Answer: I would think those brg. Would be to small unless it is a big bike.
Question: Will this work on rc car bearing
Answer: I used it on my car trailer and boat trailer.. Not sure on rc car...
Question: Will this work to repack the rear wheel bearings for my 1995 BMW M3? I don't have a cage-type bearing like most. I can remove the dust covers if need
Answer: no it won't work on your car, if I'm not mistaken you have non serviceble wheel bearing all you have to do is buy new ones and replace them, no need to grease them they are sealed bearings.
Question: Silly question but can you clean this or do you clean this after packing in the bearings? IE: Different bearings using different grease? Just wanted to make sure before purchasing what everyone does
Answer: I actually own 2 of these. I use one with the "newer" front disc brake axle grease and the other for using the heavier axle bearing grease. They can be easily cleaned out and include a red dust cover for prolonged storage. Working in a busy shop keeps me from having to waste time by unloading and reloading with different types of grease so, I just bought two. Highly recommended if you want bearings packed the right way. I love the fact that it practically pushes out the old grease when repacking bearings. that alone in itself is a real time saver as a flat rate mechanic. My only regret was purchasing the second packer off of the Snap-On tool truck. I literally paid about twice as much as amazon's cheapest price, but I made the purchase based on the convenience factor instead of waiting for it to be delivered. Hope this helps!

User questions & answers

Question: Would this work for ford e350 front brake bearing
Answer: Use on all cage-type roller and ball bearings up to 2" bore. This means the ID of the bearing. The bearing packer will not work on sealed bearings. I don't think the e350 front bearing is a sealed bearing. Most wheel bearings for the front end are tapered. If you have a cage-type bearing it should work.
Question: Can you leave the grease in the container and cap? Will it stay clean
Answer: I leave the grease in mine and I haven't had a problem.
Question: Whats the largest diameter bearing you can pack
Answer: The outside diameter can be up to 2.75" and the inside diameter can be up to 2.25" . Hope this helps.
Question: Can this be used with the "blue" marine wheel bearing grease? The "blue" is very thick
Answer: I packed new bearings for my boat trailer bearings last spring. Absolutely it can be used for marine grease! I own this and a Lisle hand bearing packer. I have Marine in this one and high temp bearing grease in the other both work great unless you're a total sissy about doing actual work!

User questions & answers

Question: Where is it made
Answer: Texas
Question: Can this grease be used in cv joints of off road axels
Answer: Most definitely yes, highly recommended for that purpose. It would perform significantly better than top tier moly grease.
Question: Could this high heat grease be a good choice for a bolt carrier group within a competition AR15? Just a light coat to the bolt as well
Answer: I would say no to using this grease in a firearm. It’s not made for that, and as an AR15 owner, I would be concerned about it gumming up the bolt carrier group. It is excellent for its intended purpose, but outside of that, I have found it an excellent grease for rotating wind mills, and for other purposes that don’t necessarily need high temp grease.
Question: Is it compatible with other type grease
Answer: Nothing should happen if it comes in contat with other greases.
