12 best rock tumbler refills

Rock tumbler refills are essential materials and supplies used in the process of rock tumbling, which is a popular hobby and educational activity often associated with learning, education, and toys/games. Rock tumblers are machines or devices that are designed to polish and smooth rough rocks, turning them into beautiful, polished stones. Here's what you should know about rock tumbler refills:

  1. Types of Rock Tumblers:

    • Rock tumblers come in two main types: rotary tumblers and vibratory tumblers. Both types require different types of refill materials.
  2. Purpose of Rock Tumbling:

    • Rock tumbling is primarily used to transform rough, unattractive rocks into smooth, polished stones. It is a process that simulates the natural forces of erosion and abrasion over an extended period.
  3. Refill Materials:

    • Refills for rock tumblers typically include several types of abrasive grits and polishing compounds. These materials are used in specific stages of the tumbling process.
  4. Abrasive Grits:

    • Grit is the coarsest material used in the tumbling process. It is available in various grades, from coarse to fine. Coarser grits are used in the initial stages to shape and smooth the rocks.
  5. Polishing Compounds:

    • After the initial tumbling stages with grit, the rocks are then tumbled with polishing compounds. These compounds are finer and help achieve a glossy, shiny finish on the stones.
  6. Stages of Tumbling:

    • The tumbling process typically consists of multiple stages, each with a specific type and grade of grit or polishing compound. This process can take several weeks to complete, gradually transforming rough rocks into polished gems.
  7. Cleaning and Care:

    • Properly cleaning and rinsing the rocks and the tumbler between stages is crucial to prevent contamination and achieve the desired results.
  8. Safety Considerations:

    • When using rock tumblers and refills, safety precautions should be observed, including wearing protective gear such as safety glasses and gloves, and operating the tumbler in a well-ventilated area.
  9. Educational Value:

    • Rock tumbling is often used in educational settings to teach geology, mineralogy, and earth science. It provides hands-on learning about the process of rock transformation.
  10. Hobby and Collecting:

    • Many enthusiasts enjoy rock tumbling as a hobby, collecting the polished stones as unique and beautiful specimens. These polished stones can be used for jewelry, crafts, or display.

In summary, rock tumbler refills are materials used in the rock tumbling process, which is a fun and educational hobby. These refills typically consist of abrasive grits and polishing compounds, and they play a crucial role in transforming rough rocks into smooth, polished gemstones. Rock tumbling can be a fascinating and educational activity for both children and adults, offering insights into geology and providing beautiful, polished rocks as a result.

User questions & answers

Question: Can it be used together
Answer: Sold by weight. Weigh them when it ships to you.
Question: I just opened this and finished with grit one, went to put grit 2 in and bottle open and 1/2 full. How do I contact seller
Answer: 1 Coarse-16oz. 2 Medium-13oz. 3 Pre-polish-12oz. 4 Polish-11.5 oz.

User questions & answers

Question: how many pounds of rocks can the grit tumble
Answer: Yes and no. You won’t find any perfectly terminated quartz crystals in here. Many of the gems have either been broken with a hammer or cut with a rock saw. However, I did find some pieces in the agate mix that I think had been part of a geode or had grown in a pocket, as they still retained the natural bubble formation agate takes on when in said conditions. I have since separated out those pieces from the tumbling mix to maintain that natural structure. So, pick through the pieces before you throw them in the tumbler just in case you find nice pieces like that.
Question: looking for replacement o-ring drive belt - anyone know where i can get them
Answer: I have tried using this coupon with several different refill packs only for Amazon to not accept it. There seems to be a disconnect between NatGeo and Amazon regarding their promotional coupon codes.
Question: Where were the rock mined
Answer: Our refill kit will arrive in a colored box within the Amazon box. The photo on our seller page is the box this product arrives in.
Question: Are these uncut gemstones sourced ethically? Can you provide evidence if so
Answer: Yes, you can make sea glass in our tumbler. Please keep in mind you won't want to use anything less than 1/4" thick, as it will just crumble and not tumble.

User questions & answers

Question: Where are stones from
Answer: Yes, they are. :)
Question: How do you put the rocks in the earings
Answer: mine came with labels that could be put on and removed but once something is written on the labels, I don't think the labels can be cleaned.
Question: Why does my rocks not polish after 10 days
Answer: The cup itself is 6 1/4 inches. That is without the straw. If you have the straw in, it is 9 1/2 inches with the straw. Hope that helps. My co-workers loved them.
Question: The instructions say to use 4 tablespoons but the packet contains less than 1 tablespoon. Shoud I buy more or is i packet enough
Answer: It is a mostly clear plastic piece about the size of a credit card on which you can print or write whatever you like. You can then put them on the cup and remove as needed/wanted. Once written on, however, that piece would not be easy to clean--probably impossible. I have washed the cups multiple times in hot water and detergent and the labels are still on and writing is still very visible.

User questions & answers

Question: Are the stones ethically sourced
Answer: Ours has never done that and we fill it about half to 3/4 full with smaller rocks is the belt getting caught up or falling off?
Question: Are any of the gemstones crystals
Answer: Our Rock tumblers are currently manufactured in China.
Question: With my rock tumbler kit i received 15% off my next purchase of refill pack. The savings will not apply to the 5# refill, why
Answer: Yes you can use your own rocks, just keep in mind you will want to tumble like kinds together, as hard rocks could chip and bruise softer rocks.
Question: Can anyone tell me how this comes packaged? is it in a brown box and inside that is the item? I'm not talking about the amazon box
Answer: I am a 39 year old rock climber with a full tool shed, it takes me about half an hour to finally get open. I'm probably in the 99th percentile in ability to open a jar; this is ridiculous.

User questions & answers

Question: What are the pellets for and how do you use them
Answer: The stones are a mix from all over and of small size and low quality. I suggest a google search of rock for tumbling to get either specific stones or a mix plus instructions on how to get best results. If you are just starting agate and jaspers polish well.
Question: What is the abrasive material
Answer: To attach a gemstone to the ring and earrings, have an adult help with gluing these accessories. We recommend a hot glue gun or an all-purpose adhesive sealant that can be purchased online or at your local hardware store.
Question: Are the rocks included
Answer: Is the tumbler broken or are you asking why you can’t set it for more than 10 days? None of the 4 steps take more than 10 days generally speaking. If you happen to be tumbling really hard stuff you can just add days as you go. However. If you are saying the machine stopped working and is broken ~ Return it
Question: Are all 5 grits included in this order
Answer: 1/2 tablespoon of grit per pound of rock

User questions & answers

Question: Can i buy extra grit without the rocks. we have many rocks from "mining" gemstones that i would love to polish. what do you recommend
Answer: Hello, currently, our GUI app can only run on Linux and Windows platforms. We are developing an Android app, it will be released in two months. THX!
Question: What pound tumbler is this product
Answer: Hello, RaspTank does not include the Raspberry Pi board, you need to buy the Raspberry Pi yourself. You can connect the keyboard and mouse directly to the Raspberry Pi to program. You can also use the PC to connect to the Raspberry Pi to program via ssh.
Question: What the difference between this and the starter kit
Answer: YES.
Question: What is the power consumption of this unit over a week of continuous use? (in usa on 110v). thank you
Answer: Yes, it can turn left and right. The calibration wasn't exactly straight forward but after a few tries was able to find and acceptable 'straight' setting and it drives okay. Speed is normal RC car speed, slightly faster than human walking so maybe 5-10 mph tops. The lag between the app and the car is a bit of a problem and at higher speeds you end up running into stuff a lot.

User questions & answers

Question: It says use one level scoop, But there is no scoop so how much do we use
Answer: Whatever the tumblers directions recommend
Question: It does state “for all tumblers”, but to confirm, even vibratory? And can it be used without water, still having same overall effect? Thank you
Answer: Exact is quite a request. However, a good approximation would be, stage 1: 60, stage 2: 120, stage 3: 500, stage 4: 1200. The pellets are round white plastic and will float. This is a great starting set. One of the reasons being is that it is a great way to keep the grits easy to use. After you have this set you can buy grits for each stage and they will come in plastic bags. Simply transfer them into the proper canister. An empty canister seems to hold about 3/4 lb of grit, although I seldom put in more than 1/2 lb. Many of the bags are 1/2lb. When my grandson started I got him this set.
Question: Do you add water and if so how much
Answer: There's no real answer to that. You put 2 tablespoons per pound of rock of each grit level. You can guess how many tablespoons are in 16oz
Question: How mw much Grit do you use for each step
Answer: They are used as filler when you don’t have enough rocks to fill the tumbler to the required amount.
