10 best telescopes for kids 7 and up
Telescopes designed for kids aged 7 and up are a great way to introduce children to the wonders of astronomy and foster their interest in science. These telescopes are typically designed to be user-friendly, durable, and educational. Here are some key features and considerations for telescopes for kids:
Ease of Use: Telescopes for children should be easy to set up and operate. Look for models with simple controls and clear instructions.
Durability: Kids can be a bit rough with their toys, so it's important to choose a telescope that can withstand some wear and tear. Sturdy construction is a plus.
Magnification: While high magnification is not necessary for beginners, it's still important to have enough power to observe the moon, planets, and some bright stars. A telescope with 20x to 50x magnification should suffice.
Aperture: The size of the telescope's aperture (the diameter of the main lens or mirror) determines how much light it can collect.A larger aperture allows for clearer and brighter views. For kids, a telescope with an aperture between 50mm and 70mm is suitable.
Mount Type: Telescopes for kids often come with simple alt-azimuth mounts, which are easy to use and understand. These telescopes can be moved up and down (altitude) and left and right (azimuth) to track objects in the sky.
Educational Materials: Some telescopes come with educational materials, such as star charts or beginner's guides to astronomy, which can enhance the learning experience.
Portability: If you plan to take the telescope on family outings or camping trips, consider its size and weight. A more compact and lightweight telescope might be preferable.
Accessories: Some telescopes come with additional eyepieces, which can provide different levels of magnification for various celestial objects. Look for telescopes with at least one or two eyepieces.
Price: Telescopes for kids are available in a range of price points. While it's tempting to opt for the least expensive model, investing a bit more can often result in a better quality telescope with clearer optics.
Safety: Teach children about safe solar observation. Never look at the sun directly through a telescope unless you have proper solar filters or equipment designed for solar viewing.
Popular brands that make telescopes for kids include Celestron, Meade, and Orion. Keep in mind that a telescope is a tool for exploration and learning, so it can provide a fun and educational experience for children interested in astronomy and the night sky.

User questions & answers
Question: | My viewfinder is upside down. Is this standard |
Answer: | Hi Frances, Thanks for your interest in a Qurious Telescope Kit! We pack all of our kits with maximum fun in mind. This 1650 starter kit is actually a perfect kit for that age. The instructions and activity guide, pictures etc. may need some help from an adult depending on reading/comprehension level, but learning how to use a telescope is a great bonding activity! Everything in the kit was designed to be fun, and educational for elementary aged kids while encouraging safe play. This kit has an added hand-held compass, monthly lunar phase guide, year long star chart, reusable, glow in the dark solar system stickers, and an activity guide with lots of different challenges for Space fun at home, even on stormy nights when a telescope can't be used. However, all telescopes do require patience (and adherence to safety warnings!) to learn how to focus and use properly. Keep the need for patience and perserverance in mind when you order and receive your kit and you should be good to go. |
Question: | Does this telescope have coated lenses |
Answer: | Thanks for your interest in a Qurious Telescope kit. Our current telescope models have a maximum magnification of x66. Planets close enough to see will be visible as small halos. To see planets clearly, you'll need a telescope with about x200 magnification and illumination. Our telescope kits are intended to help kids learn how to use and get comfortable with scientific tools, develop patience and scientific testing methods, focusing skills and moon tracking/observation. Hope that answers your question and thanks again for your interest in Qurious! |
Question: | Why can i not see anythinga through the main lense |
Answer: | I’m still trying to figure out myself how to see out of this telescope!! It’s very nice well made but I think I need to work on it more!! The stars most definitely |
Question: | Which eyepiece to phone adapter do you recommend? i'd like to take pictures with my iphone 7 plus. thanks in advance for your time |
Answer: | I would NOT waste my money on a different tripod for this telescope. It is more of a pirate monocular than a telescope. NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURE OR DESCRIPTION!!! |

ABOUT MAGNIFICATION
- The focal length of the eyepiece, combined with the focal length of the telescope, determine the magnification power.
- To calculate the power of your telescope with any particular eyepiece, simply divide the focal length of the telescope (400mm) by the focal length of the eyepiece (indicated in “mm” on the eyepiece collar).
- For example, when you use the eyepiece H20mm with this telescope, the magnification will be 20X.
ERECTING EYEPIECE/BARLOW LENS/MOON MIRROR
- Normally, a telescope offers a upside down image, the 1.5X Erecting eyepiece not only increases the magnification of telescope 1.5 times but also correct the direction of the image.
- The 3X Barlow lens can triple the magnification factor provided by the telescope.
- Because there is great deal of reflected glare when the full moon is observed, the addition of the moon mirror will remove this glare and make it possible to sharpen surface details. The moon mirror is screwed into the eyepiece when you use it.
HOW TO SET UP AND USE
- Open the Tripod.
- Screw the Aiming control into the tripod mount.
- Place the Telescope tube onto the tripod mount and lock the tube.
- Locate the Finder scope onto the Telescope tube.
- Insert the Diagonal mirror into the Focus tube.
- Put the Eyepiece into the Diagonal mirror.
- Adjust the Focus knob to view the clear image.
- WARNING: NEVER aim your Telescope at the sun or close to the sun!

User questions & answers
Question: | can this scope be used as a spotting scope for bird watching |
Answer: | Excellent for bird-watching. At 20x, it's fine. At 40x (long distance) you may want a strudier tripod, and because it's daylight, you can look through the smaller 42mm hole (take off the little cap) in the dust cap and that will improve the sharpness at high power. If you want a better spotting scope, simply buy a fancy wide-angle/high-performance 1.25 eyepiece (super-plossl, etc), around 15 mm focal length. |
Question: | You say that any tripod that I use for photography should work. Does that mean that I can screw my tripod head into the telescope |
Answer: | Yes. As others have said, the tripod that comes with the telescope is reallllly flimsy. There are a couple of screw holes on the bottom of the telescope. I was able to attache the telescope to my other tripod using the detachable head on the tripod. |
Question: | I'm a real beginner/plan to purchase this for my son so we can both explore the night sky, etc. Is it really easy to setup?/How long will it take |
Answer: | The scope is really good for beginners and it is easy to set up. As others have said the the included tripod is small for portability and not very stable. If used fully "retracted" on the hood of a car for example, it's OK. I've used it with a Celestron 7.5MM eyepiece and a 2x barlow lens and it can still resolve the rings of Saturn on a clear night. It's not designed for that kind of magnification but for an inexpensive scope with simple lenses I was impressed. I wouldn't recommend trying that though until you have some practice on focus, finding objects in the sky, and purchasing a heavy duty camera tripod. You must remember even with the highest power eyepieces, which you only want to consider using for viewing planets, objects are really small which is due to it's 400mm focal length. Overall it's WAY better than spending 40-50 dollars on a cheap toy at the local discount store. Another good option comparable to this is the Orion 76mm Fun Scope. It's really only for table top use but it's easy to swivel up/down left/right. It is a reflector though and images don't appear as crisp in my opinion. You'll find out that half the quality of a telescope is how good the tripod or mounting set up is. For the price you can't go wrong with this scope. I own several telescopes from computer driven to large reflectors and still grab this for quick views of Orions belt, Jupiter, Saturn, the Moon, and star clusters like the double cluster and the Pleiades. Just to add to an already long answer, I added an inexpensive laser object finder (similar to the Celestron Star Finder) instead of the mostly useless viewfinder. It makes it ten times easier to point the scope at objects you're trying to look at and it doesn't take much modifications to get it screwed to the scope tube or stuck on with foam tape. Your son will thank you! |
Question: | can i see with my left eye |
Answer: | Only if you look at objects on the left....use right eye for objects on the right side....if its straight above you , you can use both eyes. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can use a sharp, big knife or if not, what do you use |
Answer: | No hammer, it comes with goggles and a magnifying glass |
Question: | Does the item include a hammer |
Answer: | The best way to open them is to take a large file & carefully cut a groove around the Geode along any depressions in the shape. Place in on a towel on a concrete floor. Be sure to put on safety glasses! Take a large chisel and place it in the groove. Strike the end of the chisel with a hammer to break the Geode open. Be careful everyone standing near has their safety gasses on as well! |
Question: | What is the method of how to open them? Do you need to have a separate tool for that |
Answer: | These are absolutely real geodes, as you would soon discover when you try to break them open. However, as I have recently discovered, they are not all geodes. Of the five I've opened so far, one is a very dull nodule, not a geode, and another is nothing more than a roundish rock. So, two duds out of five so far and, based on the feel of the weight, I suspect another of the remaining five may be either just a rock or a nodule. |
Question: | Are these real geodes or man - made |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the microscope made of? Hard plastic or metal |
Answer: | Hello Leonard,This microscope is not meant for seeing cells. It's magnifications goes up to 50X. To see cells well you would need approximately 400X. This microscope comes with sea monkeys (also known for brine shrimp), and is great for watching them swim around! It is also good to explore and see pixilation in magazines or other pictures, exploring bugs, and the many slides that come with the product!Thank you for your inquiry. |
Question: | Is this microscope able to observe cells |
Answer: | The objective lens on this microscope is 2x and the ocular lenses are 10x and 25x. This combination will magnify your specimen either 20x or 50x. |
Question: | If it has a 20x objective and a 50x objective wouldn't that give you 200x and 500x magnification? Or is the microscope lens itself just a 2x & not 10x |
Answer: | Hello,The eye pieces are adjustable and should adjust to fit children or adults.Thank you for your inquiry,National Geographic Toys Customer Support |
Question: | Are the eye pieces adjustable to adapt to different widths of eyes between, e.g., children and adults |
Answer: | The end that fits into the holes of the hedgehog are 1/2 inch while the other end is between 3/4" and 1". I would say they are similar to the size of a man's fingers since I have an average woman's hand and the thickness of the quills is bigger than my fingers. |
