Answer:	Angela is right, Amanda is a bit off; with all the metal on a cruise ship to block the radio signal, you'd be lucky to get a clear signal down the hall to a nearby stateroom. Three miles for a FRS radio is wishful thinking; 1/2 to one mile, unobstructed line-of-sight is more likely. You put trees, buildings, rain, snow, concrete, or metal between you and the other person, and your range drops dramatically.

Answer:	They don't open and close to use them; you just hold them up and press the button to talk. To power them on or off, do what Rachel says in the previous comment.
