Answer:	Yes it is flat when its not using easel.. The only thing that makes it an easel is the markers standing up. The paint is easy to clean off and no, there is no space for letter size paper.. BUT... everything in it is a large pack, crayons, construction paper markers & crayons the color pencils are minis but all in all I was satisfied bc its not one of those little 10$ ones they sell at Walgreen's that have mini everything. It has red, yellow, violet, etc. It could be a defective one, or you might check batteries, sometimes toys act funny if they don't have enough power.
