13 best models tanks

Model tanks are popular items among hobbyists who enjoy assembling and painting detailed replicas of military vehicles. These models often come in the form of kits, allowing enthusiasts to recreate tanks from various historical periods and nations. Here are some key points related to model tanks and their associated hobbies:

  1. Scale Models: Model tanks are typically produced in various scales, such as 1:35, 1:48, and 1:72. The chosen scale determines the size of the finished model and the level of detail.

  2. Materials: Model tank kits are commonly made from plastic, resin, or a combination of both. Plastic kits are widely available and suitable for beginners, while resin models are often favored by experienced modelers for their finer details.

  3. Assembly: Model tank kits come with a set of parts that need to be assembled. This process involves carefully following the instructions to piece together the various components, including the hull, turret, tracks, and other details.

  4. Painting: After assembly, modelers typically paint their tanks to achieve a realistic appearance. Historical accuracy is often emphasized, with enthusiasts researching color schemes and markings specific to the tank's era and origin.

  5. Weathering: Many modelers enjoy adding weathering effects to their tanks to simulate the wear and tear of battle. This can include techniques such as chipping, rusting, and dirt accumulation.

  6. Decals: Model kits often include decals or stickers for adding authentic markings to the tank, such as unit insignias, numbers, and camouflage patterns.

  7. Aftermarket Accessories: Enthusiasts can enhance their models with aftermarket accessories like metal tracks, photo-etched parts, and resin upgrades, allowing for even greater detail and realism.

  8. Dioramas: Some modelers go beyond individual tanks and create dioramas, depicting scenes with multiple tanks, figures, and terrain to tell a more comprehensive story.

  9. Historical Interest: Model tanks are often inspired by real tanks used in historical conflicts, such as World War II, the Cold War, and more recent conflicts. The hobby appeals to those interested in military history and technology.

  10. Collecting and Displaying: Completed model tanks are often displayed in cabinets or on shelves, showcasing the craftsmanship and attention to detail invested by the modeler.

Model tanks, along with other scale model kits, contribute to a vibrant hobby community where enthusiasts share their work, exchange tips, and attend events such as model shows and exhibitions to display their creations.

TAMIYA

Based on 605 reviews Check latest price

Product description

This is an all-new kit designed by Tamiya's top designers which recreates the "Easy Eight" variant of the legendary Sherman medium tank. The M4A3E8 was known fondly as the "Easy Eight" by its crews, thanks to the relatively smooth drive afforded by its Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS). Another distinguishing feature was its 76mm gun. Some of the 2,500 examples produced were in time to appear in the Battle of the Bulge (Dec. 1944-Jan. 1945), and others even served in the Korean War years after the Allied WWII triumph. Movie buffs will no doubt also recall that the "Easy Eight" was the star of the 2014 hit film "Fury."Requires paint and assembly.

  • Slide molded turret and upper hull parts give an unbeatable combination of hassle-free assembly and highly realistic detail levels. Cast metal turret and welded hull surface textures are rendered accurately.
  • The rear showcases sharp, detailed molding on engine grilles and exhausts, as well as the numerous accessories depicted by the kit.
  • Clear parts are used to recreate light lens and cupola vision block parts, further upping the realism of this kit.
  • The single-pin T66 tracks are recreated with minimum fuss and great accuracy, by the included belt-type tracks. Drive sprockets feature fine holes.
  • A commander figure in realistic pose is provided for the cupola. The periscope seen on the hatch underside is depicted using separate parts.

I suppose if you'll be removing the turret or some of the insides, it would shave off a little weight, but I wouldn't expect it to be operational with any more than a pound. Airfix British M3 Stuart Honey 1:35 WWII Military Tank Armor Plastic Model Kit A1358

Airfix

Based on 135 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The British named the M3 "General Stuart" upon receipt of the tank under the Lend-Lease program in June of 1941. The tank's ability to "shoot and scoot" as well as keeping the crew safe from small fire arms fire, earned an affectionate nickname of "Honey" by its operators. The British cavalry men liked this tank as it could travel 10 to 20 mph faster than their own or enemy tanks, and for its ease of maintenance. The M3s were designed to replace the outdated M2s. The M3 incorporated a thicker armor, lengthened hull, and a trailer idler wheel to act as another road wheel to decrease ground pressure and improve weight distribution. The M3 turret had three pistol ports and shortened recoil mechanism. It was also equipped wraith a 37mm M6 gun, which was adequate early in the war, but by 1942, the German counterparts far surpassed the range of the M3. The narrow width of the M3 could not accommodate a larger gun. The M3A1 was fitted with a Westinghouse gyrostabilizer, a turret basket and an oil gear hydraulic traverse mechanism, but lacked a turret cupola. The earlier version of the M3A1, the Stuart III, was powered by Continental W-970-9A-7 cylinder radial gas 250 Hp engine but by mid 1941, the Stuart IVs came off the production lines with Grierson T-1020 air cooled radial diesel engine.

  • Classic 1: 35 Armor model scaled tank. Includes some interior details and includes both band tracks and individual Link tracks.
  • Skill level: 2. A great plastic model kit for the beginner or intermediate modeler.
  • Primary scheme: M3 Stuart 'honey' Connecticut IV, 'a' Squadron, 5th royal tank regiment, 7th armored division, North Africa 1942. Scheme 2: M3 Stuart 'Helen' B company, 192nd Battalion, provisional tank group, Philippines, late 1941.
  • Painting and assembly required. Paints and glue need to be purchased separately.
  • Hambros paints needed to complete the plane liveries are listed on the outside of the box.

User questions & answers

Question: Do you need to buy your own paint and glue? And if so, what type of paint and glue
Answer: Yes, you need to buy your own paints and glues. The kit is keyed for Humbrol paints, but I used Tamiya, Testors and Vallejo paints as well as Windsor & Newton oils and water colours for weathering. I also used powdered pastel sticks for dust and dirt. For glue, I use Tamiya Extra Thin cement, Liquid Weld cement, one-use tubes of superglue, and Elmer's white glue.

Answer: No. No figures came with this tank.
Question: Can the wheels spin, so that the tank drives
Answer: When you get to the step of attaching the wheels you can choose to either glue or use rubber grommets (not included in kit) to attach them. This model is still the original production molds and the seams do require quite a bit of model putty to mask. This may have been a defect in the kit I purchased but can be a common issue
Question: How heavy is this model
Answer: Not very heavy at all. Maybe the weight of a 1/4lb cheeseburger, and that is pushing it. Kit made out of plastic and is hollow inside. Hope this helps!!
