Product description

"Something evil stirs in Arkham, and only you can stop it. Blurring the traditional lines between roleplaying and card game experiences, Arkham horror: The card game is the living card game of love craft I a mystery, monsters, and madness! You and your friend (or up to three friends with two core sets) become characters within the quiet New England town of Arkham. You have your talents, sure, but you also have your flaws. Perhaps you've dabbled a little too much in the writings of the Necronomicon, and its words continue to haunt you. Perhaps you feel compelled to cover up any signs of otherworldly evils, hampering your own investigations in order to protect the quiet confidence of the greater population. Perhaps you'll be scarred by your encounters with a ghoulish cult. No matter what compels you, no matter what haunts you, you'll find both your strengths and weaknesses reflected in your custom deck of cards, and these cards will be your resources as you work with your friends to unravel the world's most terrifying mysteries. Meanwhile, each of your adventures in Arkham horror LCG carries you deeper into mystery. You'll find cultists and foul rituals. You'll find haunted houses and strange creatures. And you may find signs of the ancient ones straining against the barriers to our world the basic mode of play in Arkham LCG is not the adventure, but the campaign. You might be scarred by your adventures, your sanity may be strained, and you may alter Arkham's landscape, burning buildings to the ground. All your choices and actions have consequences that reach far beyond the immediate resolution of the scenario at hand. And your actions may earn you valuable experience with which you can better prepare yourself for the adventures that still lie before you".

  • A living card game of eldritch mystery or 1 to 2 players (or up to 4 with 2 core sets)
  • Blurs the line between the traditional card gaming and role playing experiences
  • Players assume the roles of unique investigators marked by specific strengths and weakness
  • Investigators are opposed by the challenges from adventure specific encounter decks
  • Campaign rules grant additional depth to your decisions and allows you to “level up” your deck between adventures

User questions & answers

Question: I'm looking to get this for solo play...do the expansions support solo and would 2 core sets still be needed
Answer: The expansions are just as good for solo play as more then 1 playerMultiple cores is a very, very common community debate, so here is where those debates always end up: The game is 100% playable with only 1 core, especially for single player. More expansions makes the downside of only 1 core less noticeable, but that downside never goes away. Only having 1 copy of a number of very key cards with a single core gets annoying rather quickly, so if you are at all, "Into" Arkham Horror, you want core number 2 sooner rather then later.People saying that you only, "Need" 1 core for one or two players are only technically correct. You can make playable decks with 1 core, but those decks will only be able to have 1 copy of some of your decks most important cards. 2 cores lets you include 2 copies of your most important cards, and you are limited to 2 copies of a card per deck. having that option is MUCH nicer, hence, get core number 2 sooner rather then later.Sidenote about single player: There is no reason you can't play alone with 2 (or more) investigators. Just play 2 (or more) decks at once. I find 1 investigator to be just okay, but playing 2 handed really lets the game mechanics shine.
Question: What's the replay-ability of this game
Answer: In my personal opinion is very good. However the game asks for a “main investigator”. Usually someone that will make hard choices and move the game forward. Sort of but not necessarily a dungeon master shall we say. You have to play and loose a few times to get it. The way is different every time is because the encounter deck has to be shuffled and you don’t know what you’re going to get. And in scenario 2 and 3 you select random locations and enemies so you never know where or who you’ll be fighting. Is not Munchkin where you just shuffle a few cards and instantly you are playing. The charm of this game is that is semi rpg. So there’s definitely a rehearsed element. But the way is set up, not even the leading investigator can control everything.
Question: Compared to lotr lcg, what is its level of frustration
Answer: I found the game play smoother overall compared to the LOTR LCG, and the way each scenario has multiple Resolution conditions that carry forward into the campaign game feel more rewarding - even when you've had a tough game with a not so great outcome, it's interesting to see how that will impact future scenarios. If you want to play with more than 2 investigators at once though, be prepared to pick up a second base set - even though only half the components are used for adding additional players - the rest are just...backups in case you lose or damage something at that point.
Question: Do you need to purchase multiple copies of the same expansion to accommodate 4 players
Answer: Expansions, no. Base game, you might want 2 if you're going to dip into the expansions slowly. You wouldn't need more than 2 of the base game and you would never need more than 1 of any expansion. The reason for this is that you wouldn't build overlapping decks. If player 1 has an investigation deck (yellow) and they put the 2 magnifying glass cards in their deck, then player 2 should focus on fighting (blue) and put guns and cops in their deck. Player 3 should build an all-around deck like purple or green to fill in where necessary. They will have all sorts of other fun tricks up their sleeves and, while a magnifying glass or gun might be useful, they'll pick a similar green or purple card instead if that's their only option, and play isn't hampered at all. 2 Cores can support up to 4 players, but you may want to buy the whole first cycle expansion and pull out the player cards before building your decks, just for the added variety. Each of the $15 cycle packs comes with 2-4 cards in each color, upping your options and creating more fun level-up paths for you as you play.

User questions & answers

Question: How good is Single player in this game? I always heard and Read AH had pretty good Single player ability
Answer: It is easier with 4 or more players. With less than 4 it is harder. (Bad scaling on designers part IMO.) You can adjust difficulty by removing the hard cards or playing more than one character.
Question: So. Do you recommend this game for kids under 10 years
Answer: It depends on the child, and even adult. As far as content, there are three female monsters borderline of what is considered nude. Its nothing a sharpie can't fix. Some of the monsters are rather scary, but there isn't over-the-top blood or gore (some parts are borderline). The events and themes often link to the occult, sometimes forcing the player to decide between signing away their soul and allowing the world to be destroyed. The storyline and plot are equivalent to Lovecraft stories. If the child can pay attention and enjoy the short story "Call of Cthulhu", they will love the game. Here is a free/legal link to the story: http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/cc.aspxAs others have said, the gameplay is advanced. The players will lose about 50% of the time. The characters they play will go insane, get devoured, murdered, etc. It can be hard for some children to play a co-op game where the whole group loses against the "system". There is also plenty of reading, and the game takes a decent amount of time. The game box itself recommends it for players 14+.
Question: Should I even pick up Arkham Horror? People say this is better but should I still purchase AH
Answer: I don't know. It depends on what style you're looking for. I've heard the Arkham Horror is more involved and localized whereas Eldritch Horror is easier to pick up and globalized. If you want to hunt monsters through one mansion, fine, go with Arkham, but if you want to chase them across continents, go with Eldritch. They both take a long time to set up and play, so no real differences there. Hopefully at some point there will be a sort of blend of both that will allow you to travel somewhere on a larger map and then set up a smaller map to play in.
Question: What are the main differences between this game and the original Arkham Horror? Are they basically the same game with all different cards
Answer: This isn't Arkham Horror light. It's what Arkham Horror should have been, which is to say that the rules are revised, streamlined and not a chore to manage. My biggest complaint with Arkham Horror was that, due to its long play time and vast amount of rules (albeit each rule was very simple), I had an extremely difficult time getting it to the table. Here's an example of a few mild, but excellent changes that make life easier.-Monsters no longer move-There is no lost in time and space-You don't move your character to an otherworld location on the board when exploring a gate-There is no sneaking around monsters-There is no adjusting skill slidersSome people may feel as though this detracts from the overall experience of the game. I would disagree. What these simplifications result in is a tighter focus on what the game does best: telling a story through encounter cards. It also speeds up the game, which really means that you're spending more time playing the game and less time being a book-keeper. Eldritch Horror feels like a blend between Pandemic and Arkham Horror, retaining the best elements of both games. You get the tight focus of Pandemic with the story-telling elements of Arkham Horror all while maintaining the excellent Cthulhu theme we all love.I keep referencing the focus of the game. The tightening of the mechanics. The streamlined experience. What does that mean other than there are less rules to memorize and less book-keeping to be done? I believe Eldritch Horror has made huge improvements in the small things that matter. For example, on the back of clue tokens, there is a number and a depiction of exactly where the clue goes. Mythos cards now list what needs to be done via icons in the top lefthand corner of the card in a logical and easily identified order. Icons on the front of monsters are easily distinguishable and identify when a monster has an effect upon being placed on the board or when a mythos card activates them. These are all small changes/additions, but they make a HUGE difference, especially when you add them all up. It brings me back to my point earlier: Eldritch Horror allows you to spend more time playing as your investigator and less time playing for the board. If I were to bring to your attention any flaw in the game, it would be that I truly, sincerely, 100% believe that Eldritch Horror will need an expansion ASAP! There simply are not enough encounter cards. After 5 playthroughs, you will more than likely have experienced everything the encounters have to offer and possibly even seen many encounters a few times each. Here are the game's positives-Steamlined rules, cards, and other components-Same Arkham Horror feel minus all the book-keeping-Encounter cards tell a great story-Production values are top-notch (it's fantasy flight, what did you expect?)-Play time feels just right-Doom clock gives a better sense of imminent doom looming-Cthulhu can be a monster you fight on the board! Here are the game's negatives-There is a lack of encounter cards-Despite the high production values, the artwork on the board isn't quite as flavorful as I would like (I felt Arkham Horror shared the same flaw)-There aren't enough Ancient Ones-There are only 4 dice that come in the game, and they are small and cheapEldritch Horror tightens the mechanics of Arkham Horror while still retaining the feel that made us all love that game. It sheds the excess weight that held players back, which has allowed the game to run faster than ever. Richard L. and Corey K are two of the best and most well known designers out today. Eldritch Horror is everything you would expect if you put both their brains together and created a game.Ultimately, I'm sure there will be plenty of people who proclaim that this is a dumbed down version of Arkham Horror just as people complained that Descent 2nd Ed was a dumbed down version of Descent 1st Ed. The truth is, whether or not it is dumbed down, Descent 2nd Ed is better than the original and Eldritch Horror is better than Arkham Horror.

User questions & answers

Question: Please give an opinion pertaining to level of complexity for solo playability. I am a mid-level experience gamer. Rate 1-5(easy to complex & why
Answer: 4. Most of their games have a high number of components that you have to keep track of. The game can easily turn disastrous if you fail or incorrectly play a component. Don’t be surprised at the the number of times you have to go back and reference the instruction book. Some games have two books, a quick startup book and a more comprehensive instruction book. Give one of their games a try. I believe that you will enjoy yourself.

User questions & answers

Question: The description indicates these are intended as a cheap starting point for new players -why are they significantly more expensive than the base game
Answer: They should cost about 15 USD per pack but because they haven’t been reprinted yet, some folks are selling them for above the intended base price or MSRP.
Question: For these investigator packs, is it better to keep player cards with this investigator, or add all the cards to pool for other investigators in class
Answer: That would be up to you, if you plan on using the Starter Deck as presented soon, I would keep it together. Otherwise I'd add the cards to the pool. The deck list is on the insert in each set, so would be simple enough to recreated.
