14 best board games for preschoolers
Of course, I'd be happy to provide information about board games for preschoolers!
Board games for preschoolers are designed to be engaging and educational for children between the ages of 3 and 5. They often focus on developing fundamental skills like color recognition, counting, matching, and fine motor skills. Here are some popular board games tailored for preschoolers:
Candy Land: A classic game that involves players moving their game pieces along a winding path of colored spaces, matching cards drawn from a deck. It helps with color recognition and counting.
Chutes and Ladders: This game involves players moving up ladders and sliding down chutes, determined by a spin of the spinner. It teaches counting and number recognition.
Memory Matching Games: These games involve matching pairs of cards by flipping them over, testing memory and concentration skills.
Hi Ho! Cherry-O: Players pick pretend cherries from trees and place them in their baskets, helping with counting and basic math skills.
The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel Game: Players use squirrel-shaped tweezers to pick up and sort different colored acorns. This game helps with fine motor skills and color recognition.
Spot It!: This is a visual perception game in which players try to find matching symbols on pairs of cards. It's great for developing visual recognition skills.
Zingo!: Similar to Bingo, this game helps with sight word recognition, matching, and fine motor skills.
Guess Who?: Players ask yes or no questions to eliminate characters on the game board until they can guess their opponent's character. It promotes deductive reasoning and social interaction.
Uno Moo: A simplified version of Uno using animal figures. It's a good introduction to matching and color recognition.
Connect 4: A two-player game where players try to get four of their colored discs in a row. It encourages strategic thinking and spatial awareness.
Remember to always consider the age-appropriateness of a game and whether it aligns with the child's interests and abilities. Additionally, adult supervision may be necessary, especially for younger preschoolers.
These games not only provide entertainment but also foster important skills in early childhood development. They promote social interaction, cognitive development, and fine motor skills, making them valuable tools for learning through play.

User questions & answers
Question: | Why is the manufacturer recommended age listed as 3 - 7 months? The warning says choking hazard for kids under 3 yrs |
Answer: | That appears to be an error. I suspect it's supposed to say 3-7 years. My 3yr old loves this game. My 7yr old tires of it a little more quickly. I'd suggest this is a great game for 3-6 years old. |
Question: | How sturdy are the logs? They appear to be cardboard. Are they |
Answer: | yes, but they are of the same thick sturdy construction of the box. for comparison's sake - take the trivial pursuit box vs. monopoly or chutes and ladders. the latter two end up ripping at the seams and are easily crushed. Trivial pursuit box is much sturdier and holds up. Sneaky Snacky Squirrel (box and logs) are better and stronger than trivial pursuit. if you step on the logs, they'll probably show damage, but form regular handling, not at all. in fact not only are they thick board, they are coated. my son also just got chutes and ladders and it is so cheap and flimsy - this game (SSS) was so well made that it was actually an ooh and aah session when we passed it around. like I said, 4 ppl ordered it once they saw it. If you are considering this game, I recommend it 1000%. and I do mean 1000 |
Question: | why can`t an 85 year old play this game...why does the recommended age go to 83 years and 4 months |
Answer: | I suppose it's along the same answer as to why the manufacturers recommended age is 3 -7 months but there is a warning it's not for children under 3 years old. Good thing this isn't a counting game. |
Question: | |
Answer: | Or, what is 3+0. Or 5-2. So many possibilities. |

It's the family favorite HI HO! CHERRY-O board game! Preschoolers can have so much fun picking fruit to fill their baskets, they don’t even realize they’re practicing math skills, such as counting, addition and subtraction. Players choose from two different play options and take turns picking pretend cherries, blueberries, apples and oranges from their tree. If the spinner lands on a bird or a dog players will have to return cherries to their tree. Landing on a spilled bucket means they have to start the game over! Think of the Hi Ho! Cherry-O board game when it comes to a fruity fun way for kids to practice math skills! Hasbro Gaming and all related terms are trademarks of Hasbro.
Round and round she goes. Hi Ho! Cherry-O is the counting game in which players race to be the first to have 10 cherries in their basket. A spin of the arrow determines your fate. It will instruct you to pick one, two, three, or four cherries from your tree and put 'em in your basket. That is, of course, if you don't land on the bird or the dog, requiring you to take two cherries from your basket and return them to the tree. And try not to land on the spilled bucket or--you guessed it--spill the contents of your basket or you start over. --Alison Golder

User questions & answers
Question: | How long do it take to play this game |
Answer: | Depends whether or not you play with or without putting the puzzle together. My 5 year old granddaughter and I usually play without doing that part and our games last around 15 minutes including setup. She loves it!! |
Question: | Where do you get replacement cherries |
Answer: | No idea. But the game in most stores is only $5, probably cheaper than replacement if you can find them. |
Question: | What is the 9-piece puzzle for |
Answer: | The 9 piece puzzle is the the cooperative version of the game. If you chose to play that version everyone's tree has to be empty before the puzzle is completed or the bird wins and everyone loses. It is in the instructions of the game if you want more details on how to play that version. |
Question: | How is this different from the original? It looks like this one has cherries, blueberries, apples and oranges. Are there other differences |
Answer: | I can't remember the original game perfectly so I can't be sure, but I think another new feature is a choice between competitive vs cooperative play--all players can play against each other, or play as one team. In that case, it is a race against assembling a bird puzzle. If all fruit is off the trees before the bird puzzle is complete, everyone wins. My young kids (ages 6 and 4) like playing that way best. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How many cards per box and are there expansion packs |
Answer: | 6 double sided cards (they are boards really, not cards). I haven't seen an expansion pack- you could probably photocopy the board and laminate them though. |
Question: | what age group is this for |
Answer: | My son loved it around 4-5 but at 7 he has lost interest. He’s on to more complicated games now. |
Question: | Since here are images on the tiles, would you say that this game will help little ones learn to read words? I'm afraid they'll just stick to the image |
Answer: | Yes, seeing the letters and the picture does help little children learn to read words. You can reinforce the letter-word association by quickly reviewing each tile after the game has ended. Cover either the photo or the letters and ask the child to identify what is covered, but don't let this review detract from the fun of the game. If you take a peek at alphabet books for little children, you will see a picture that begins with the letter on that particular page, helping the child learn the sounds of letters. |
Question: | What is the difference between zingo word builder game and thinkfun's what's gnu game? thank you |
Answer: | I don't have the game What's Gnu. Based upon the description, they seem very similar. The different seems to be that Zingo Word Builder has three words per card and is played more like a challenge game. What's Gnu seems to be true world building, card by card. I purchased Zingo because I have multiple Zingo games in my classroom. Once the students learned to play one game, they could easily figure out how to play Zingo 1-2-3, Word Builder, Sight Word, etc. Hope this helps. |

If you loved playing the Candy Land board game when you were a child, you can share the experience with your loved ones and start down the "magical" road to sweet surprises! This adorable version of the classic Candy Land game features gingerbread men as movers, colored cards, and fun illustrations that kids love, with different destinations like Cookie Commons and the chunky Chocolate Mountain. Players choose their cards, move their pawns, and let their imaginations soar as they make their way to the castle to win! For 2 to 4 players. Hasbro Gaming and all related terms are trademarks of Hasbro.
"Once upon a time, King Kandy, the Imperial Head Bonbon and Grand Jujube of Candy Land disappeared." Thus begins the magical journey of Milton Bradley's classic Candy Land board game. Captivated by the story of a kidnapped king and eager to help find him, little ones move their gingerbread pawns along a rainbow path and through a land of candy characters, all subjects of King Kandy's realm.
Playing cards thoughtfully designed for non-readers are coded with colorful squares matching the jeweled stepping-stone path or an occasional token matching one of the characters' symbols: draw a blue card, move to the nearest blue stepping-stone; draw a snowflake and earn a visit to Queen Frostine's iceberg. There are occasional pitfalls, too: land on the wrong square and you might be stuck in Molasses Swamp until a red card is drawn. With all these enticing, sugarcoated images (and King Kandy plainly visible at path's end), children can't help but be delighted by Candy Land. It's delicious! Instructions are in both Spanish and English. Candy Land is for two to four players) --Julie Ubben

Climb up and slide down in the exciting game of ups and downs, Chutes and Ladders! The Chutes and Ladders board game for girls and boys has been around for over 60 years and has been enjoyed by families for generations. Players can see the square marked 100, but how will they get there? If a player lands their pawn on a good deed, they can shimmy up a ladder, but land on the wrong spot and they'll shoot down a chute! No reading is required to play this simple and easy game for preschoolers. Players spin the spinner to see how many spots they'll move. Will their new spot send them down or move them up, up, up? Slip, slide and see who will win the Chutes and Ladders board game. Hasbro Gaming and all related terms are trademarks of Hasbro.
Be the first to move your child-shaped playing piece from square one to square 100 on the Chutes and Ladders game board--but watch out! If you land on the square that shows you ate too much candy--Ouch!--you get a tummy ache and slide down a chute to a square a few numbers below. But if you end your turn on a good-deed square, such as helping sweep up a mess, you'll be rewarded by a ladder-climb up the board.
A fantastic follow-up to Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders is ideal for younger children who are still learning to take turns and just beginning to recognize numbers (the spinner stays in the single digits). It's also a gentle introduction to the higher numbers as players climb to 100 at the top of the board. And, thanks to all those chutes and ladders, it's got enough excitement to keep your 7-year-old on the edge of her seat. English and Spanish instructions are included; no reading is necessary to play. Chutes and Ladders is for two to four players. --Julie Ubben

User questions & answers
Question: | would an almost-4-year-old understand how to play this game? he'll be 4 in two months |
Answer: | I think it would depend on the child. My 3 year old received this for his 3rd birthday and had trouble understanding the concept at first. However, we tried again just a couple months later and he was able to play just fine. He is also extremely good at jigsaw puzzles and understands the idea of matching like pieces together. |
Question: | What is the size of the completed layout? Size of each tile |
Answer: | The game easily takes up a 3'-4' round table, which is what we play on. In order to avoid running off the table, or having to move the puzzle around to accommodate more pieces being added to one path or another, we have a house rule that says the puzzle cannot ever be moved, and that any piece played on a path must leave room for other pieces to be added later. In other words, no trapping of open paths is allowed. Sometimes that ends the game before we use up most of our tiles. But then we just see who has the fewest tiles left, declare that person the winner, and start another game! Also, we shuffle and deal out all the tiles, face down, in the beginning, so that each player has his own smaller pile to draw from. Then we each turn over the first ten of our tiles and go from there. We find that less destructive than reaching across the puzzle to pull from a central pile. |
Question: | Is there only one way that the train tracks will fit? Can you basically ignore the game rules and play this like a train track construction set |
Answer: | Hi and thanks for your question! There are multiple ways to make the train tracks fit, but I think you could "play" it like a train track construction set - we've played it like solitaire before, which sounds like what I think you're asking. |
Question: | Where is it made |
Answer: | The board is a high quality cardboard and the snails are wood. It has held up well for 3 years in a preschool class. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How much time does the player have before the timer goes off |
Answer: | 40 seconds. You can make it shorter by not winding it all the way but it is plenty of time for my 3 year old to put the pieces in. I remember it being much shorter when I was a child. |
Question: | Is this a mini version |
Answer: | No, original had 25, this one has only 9. Original was also slightly larger. This is even smaller than the original travel version. |
Question: | What type of batteries does this need |
Answer: | Hi! No batteries needed. |
Question: | Are the pieces larger than the original version? Some of the comments say this would be appropriate for a 2 year old |
Answer: | Well...I don't quite remember how big the pieces are in the original version, since that was almost 25 years ago when my children had the game. The pieces in this version are of course shaped, but ROUGHLY around the size of a quarter. If your child tends to put things in their mouth, then this wouldn't be appropriate, pieces could easily be swallowed. Depends if you would be supervising the whole time. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the board game a different game and sold separately |
Answer: | Yes. This is a completely different game and sold separately than the board game. It is similar in that you are finding things in the pictures but this is a quicker type of game than the board game. |
Question: | We found a broken sand-timer when we opened the game. Does anyone know how much time the sand-timer is set for? Thank you |
Answer: | The cheapest solution is to visit a thrift store and buy a $2 copy of Yahtzee or any other game that has a sand timer. However, if the game was shipped and sold by Amazon, see if it's within your return window for a refund. |
Question: | Does anyone know how many there are of each mystery item? Some Goldbug items we're able to find 10 (# of magnifying glasses), do they all have |
Answer: | We've been wondering the same thing! My kids are convinced there are 10 of each item, even though we haven't been able to locate them all. |
Question: | what age group |
Answer: | My 2-yr old absolutely loves this game. She plays the game with us for hours. I bought 5-6 toddler/preschooler board games and no other games could ever have her engaged for that long. She gets confused about two aspects of the game though: 1) she may start looking for objects from a previous turn while undertaking the current Goldbug search; 2) reaching the island does not seem to be her goal of the game - she's too happy to share the food with the pigs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What are the pancakes made of...are they soft or hard |
Answer: | The pancakes are made of a soft plastic material. They can be squeezed a little, but not enough for them to lose their shape. They are durable and we have been using this game at school for a year now. |
Question: | Can this be a one player game |
Answer: | Only if you play against a stop watch to see how fast you can correctly stack them. Other than that, no. |
Question: | What kind of plastic are the pancakes made of? Hard, soft, polypropylene, vinyl, etc |
Answer: | Soft plastic |
Question: | will this be good for a 5 year old or too easy |
Answer: | for a typically developing 5yr old, too easy. Great game is the Princess Cupcake Party game - lots of difficulty levels. My girls and my boys love it. |

SEQUENCE for Kids by Jax
It's the classic game of SEQUENCE made just for kids! Play an animal card from your hand, and place your chip on the corresponding animal on the board. Wild cards add excitement to the game - use a unicorn card to place your chip anywhere, or use a dragon card to remove an opponent's chip. The first player with four chips in a row wins!
Helps develop strategy-building skills
Select an animal card of your choice from your hand and place it face up on a discard pile. Then place a chip on the corresponding animal on the board. Each card is pictured twice on the game board, so choose your space wisely!
Wild cards add excitement to the game
Use a unicorn card to place your chip anywhere, or use a dragon card to remove an opponent's chip and keep them from getting 4-in-a-row. In the example above, a unicorn card was used to place a chip on the alligator, adding to the red's row and blocking blue from getting a SEQUENCE.
Winning the game
Get four chips in a row in any direction, and use the corners as a free space to build your SEQUENCE. The first player with four chips in a row wins the game. It's fun, it's challenging, it's SEQUENCE!
