I am a sewer myself and I found that just going to a craft store and buying sewing equipment (needles, thread, scissors, buttons, felt, rick rack, etc.) is a little better quality than what is in this kit. But, the projects are good. There are some books with beginner projects though that can tell you what materials he would need with directions on completing the projects. With my granddaughter, I ended up just showing her how to make the stitches and she designed a blanket (making a hem) and pillow for her dolls. I also taught her to sew on a button, which she used to decorate the pillow. The kit has patterns for making animals, which we didn't get to because we live far apart and ran out of time.
