Yes need you kneed flux to solder it cleans the joint surfaces and keeps it from oxidizing before the solder cools sc and crystalizes. The joint MYST BE SHINY. If the SOLDER joint is dull then it crystalized wrong and the joint is highly resistive. Example of the connection is for audio , it will be noisy. adding electrical noise the the circuit. If the joint carries a lot of current as in a power connect. It will heat up and become a danger. |

| Answer: | Solder follows heat, but it's important not to burn off all of the flux before it gets to where it needs to go (flux removes oxidation, which allows the solder to make a strong molecular bond with the surface). Putting solder on the tip of the iron first is a guaranteed way to burn off the flux in the solder before you put it where it needs to go. I typically touch the iron to where I want the solder to go, heat the connection, and then bring the solder in to either touch the same joint. On wires the iron will touch the opposite side as the solder - so the solder flows through toward the heat of the iron. In some applications the connection is too small, so I touch the solder to the iron as close as possible to the connection. If I ever need to apply solder to the iron first and then bring it over to a connection, I use a flux pen or paste flux to coat the connection before soldering it. |

For vintage appliances (60-80's), the larger sizes are fine, for modern stuff you can generally use the larger sizes for entry-point connectors and power supply components, but much of the pcb will be surface mount requiring the smaller sizes.
