14 best water alarms
Water alarms, also known as water detectors or water leak alarms, are devices designed to alert homeowners and property owners to the presence of water where it shouldn't be. They are essential tools for preventing water damage, which can result from leaks, flooding, or other water-related issues. Here is what you should know about water alarms:
Purpose:
- Water alarms are primarily used to detect and alert you to the presence of water in areas where it can cause damage. This includes basements, crawl spaces, bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and around water heaters, sump pumps, and appliances.
Detection Methods:
- Contact Sensors: These alarms use probes or sensors that come into direct contact with water. When water touches the sensor, it completes an electrical circuit, triggering the alarm.
- Float Sensors: Some water alarms use a float mechanism that rises with the water level. When the float reaches a certain height, it triggers the alarm.
- Moisture Sensors: Moisture-sensing alarms are designed to detect even small amounts of moisture in the area.
Alert Mechanisms:
- Water alarms typically emit a loud audible alarm when they detect water. The sound can be similar to a siren or beep, depending on the model.
- Some advanced water alarms also offer smartphone notifications, allowing you to receive alerts remotely through a mobile app or via email.
Placement:
- Water alarms should be strategically placed in areas prone to water leaks or flooding. Common locations include near water heaters, washing machines, dishwashers, and in basements or crawl spaces.
- It's a good practice to place them near potential sources of leaks and in areas where you might not regularly inspect for water damage.
Power Source:
- Water alarms can be battery-powered or plugged into an electrical outlet. Battery-powered alarms are more versatile and can be placed in locations without easy access to power outlets.
Benefits:
- Early Detection: Water alarms provide early warning, allowing you to address water issues before they lead to extensive damage or mold growth.
- Property Protection: By detecting leaks early, these alarms can protect your home and belongings from costly water damage.
- Peace of Mind: Having a water alarm system in place can provide peace of mind, especially when you're away from home for extended periods.
Maintenance:
- Regularly check the batteries in battery-operated water alarms to ensure they are functioning properly.
- Clean the sensors or probes as needed to prevent false alarms due to dust or debris buildup.
Types:
- There are various types of water alarms available, including standalone units and those that can be integrated into a larger home security or smart home system.
Water alarms are an important component of home safety and protection against water damage. They offer an affordable and effective way to detect leaks and floods, potentially saving you from the costly consequences of water-related incidents.

User questions & answers
Question: | which works best for condensation on the furnace -air handler |
Answer: | Although this is a question best answered by First alert, I believe that once it is synced with other modules it only sends a notification to other modules when you either push the test button or an actual alarm triggers a signal to be sent. Anything else would likely cause excess battery drain for no reason. |
Question: | Is it water proof? Meaning if it is submerged in several inches of water can it be reused |
Answer: | I mixed sa511 smoke with voice and sco500 smoke and co with voice and all work fine together |
Question: | Is the battery replaceable ? If yes, what size battery does it require |
Answer: | Here is the wording from the instructions: The communication distance (range) between any two ONELINK® Alarms is typically 50 feet (15 meters) inside of a home. Some features of a home, such as the number of floors, number/size of rooms, furniture and types of building materials used may reduce the range of the Alarms. Examples include: suspended ceilings, ductwork, large metallic appliances (refrigerators) and metal studs. A feature of ONELINK® Alarms is that they operate as a mesh network. All Alarms will repeat any alarm signal that is received to all other ONELINK® Alarms. Interference from structural conditions can be overcome by adding additional Alarms to route the wireless signal around obstructions. • The range and proper operation of any wireless device will vary depending on its surroundings. It is very important that each Alarm is tested individually before and after installation to make sure that all Alarms respond properly. |
Question: | Does it float |
Answer: | They should, I have 4 units and was able to get them all connected. It took me a few times at the beginning because I was not fast enough. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it work with SmartThings |
Answer: | It will not work on the furnace. |
Question: | After replaced new battery. I tested the alarm and no beep. Is that ok |
Answer: | I'm not sure if that would ruin it or not. I didn't submerge mine, just set it in shallow water to make sure it would beep. |
Question: | will it float in water |
Answer: | Hi - Yes, the battery is replaceable. It's a 9-volt battery. But in my opinion, the Zircon Leak Alert alarm is better than the Honeywell. The Zircon has sensors that lie flat on the floor, as opposed to the Honeywell, which has sensors that are raised slightly above the floor. In fact, I tested the 2 alarms side-by-side and found that the Zircon's response time is faster than Honeywell's. (The Zircon also uses a 9-volt battery). |
Question: | Where do the emails come from? even though there's no hub, it must connect to a remote email server (at zircon?). what if zircon stops this service |
Answer: | They all float Georgie. And when you're down here, you'll float too |

Zircon Leak Alert
Undetected water can cause thousands of dollars in damage. Place a Leak Alert water detector anywhere the potential for flooding or leaks exist.
The Leak Alert WiFi provides a loud audio alert to homeowners, renters, business owners, and property managers alike. Be alerted to water leaks as soon as one is detected.
No Wires. No Hassle.
The Leak Alert has two external metal sensing contacts running a mild electrical current. When both strips get wet, through a plumbing leak, flood, or surrounding moisture condensing on the surface, the electrical circuit will complete, and the alarm will sound.
The Leak Alert detector is not a one-time use device. Each time the sensing contacts make contact with moisture and the alarm sounds, simply dry the contacts. Return the detector to its location or choose a new location as needed.
All that is needed to operate the tool is a fresh 9V alkaline battery with an extended expiration date.
1. Install the Battery
Install a new 9V alkaline battery in your Leak Alert. Just like your smoke detectors, the battery in a Leak Alert should be changed on an annual basis at minimum. For additional security, the unit will chirp if the battery is running low and will float in the event of a flood.
2. Placement
Place a Leak Alert in any location where there is a potential for water damage and flooding such as in the:
- Bathroom
- Laundry Room
- Kitchen
- Basement
- Garage
3. Respond to Alarm
Lay the Leak Alert flat with the metal contacts facing down and touching the surface. When the Leak Alert's metal sensing contacts come into contact with water, a loud 90 dB alarm sounds for up to 72 hours. The alarm is as loud as your standard smoke detector. In the event of a severe flood, the Leak Alert floats and continues to sound an alarm until the battery is depleted. To minimize property damage, respond to the alarm as quickly as possible.

Question: Do I need to plug the Leak Alert into an outlet?
Answer: No, The Leak Alert only requires a brand new 9V alkaline battery with an extended expiration date.
Q: Are the Leak Alert water detectors reusable once they’ve been activated?
A: Yes, they can be reused after the two exterior metal sensor contacts are fully dried. Be sure to remove the battery, wipe the detector’s contacts, and let it air dry for minimum of 24 hours.
Q: My basement and garage can get very cold during the winter. Will my Leak Alert still function in that environment?
A: The tool operates between 20° and 105°F and can be stored, when not in use, between 20° and 150°F.
Q: How loud is the alarm?
A: The alarm is 90 dB, which is the same volume, or louder a standard smoke detector.
Q: Does the Leak Alert work on damp carpet?
A: Yes, if the spacing of the carpet fibers are close enough and the two exterior metal sensing contacts are in direct contact with the wet carpet, the detector should sound its alarm.
- LOW-COST, LOUD AND EFFECTIVE water leak alarm designed to help mitigate damage and avoid the associated liabilities and legal exposure to landlords and management companies caused by water leaks.
- IMPORTANT TOOL to warn apartment dwellers, condo owners, managers and landlords of leak conditions so that they can be fixed before they become much costlier problems.
- NO BATTERIES REQUIRED. Lasts up to 3 years.
- SIMPLE INSTALLATION. Just place it and forget it. If water is present, a 110 dB alarm will sound.
- PERFECT for water heaters, laundry areas, under sinks, next to toilets, and near any suspected leak locations.

Question: | Why is this item listed for €71 on Amazon.de, but only $22 here on com |
Answer: | JD 5.0 out of 5 starsThis unit can send text messages to phones too! December 30, 2017 Size: 1 Pack|Style: WiFi Email Alert|Package Type: Standard Packaging|Verified Purchase This unit is great!!! I was able to set it up to send notices to cell phones and email. Most wireless phone providers let you send emails that convert to text messages. During the device setup, you can specify several email addresses to receive notifications. I used the format of [email protected] to send text messages to my Verizon wireless phone. So now water leak alerts will be sent as text messages to a couple cell phones plus a couple gmail accounts. User questions & answers
Question: | How to turn off the alarm? Is there a switch to turn off the sound |
Answer: | 22 USD because it ships from the US so it costs extra to ship it to .de |
Question: | What gauge of wire is the cable. I will need to extend it about 20 ft. and would like to use the same gauge wire not bigger or smaller |
Answer: | It will go off if you set it on a damp cloth, or your dampened finger. It does get louder the more water it detects. |
Question: | Is it a constant, steady alarm, or does it "chirp/beep" repeatedly |
Answer: | The batteries are not replaceable. An expiration date is printed on the device. Last years purchase says replace 3-2020. |
Question: | what size battery do these take |
Answer: | The product is NOT a one-time use product. If it sounds, just life the Flood Buzz out of the puddle, dry off the bottom and place to monitor for leaks again. This product is very simple to use. |
- World's Longest Wireless Range: Powered by LoRa technology, the long-range yet low-power system offers the industry’s longest receiving range in the market (1/4 mile). Our long-range coverage enables its use in areas challenging for most residential Wi-Fi systems, such as basements, outdoor porch/patio areas, sheds, free-standing garages, even remote outbuildings on your property.
- Easy and Effective Property Protection: The YoLink wireless Water Sensor could not be easier to install; just place near or under the equipment you wish to monitor. Suggested uses are near or under sump pumps, toilets, water heaters, laundry machines, dishwashers, sinks, fish tanks and any other location subject to water leaks and flooding.
- Early-Warning Notifications: Receive real-time early-warning notifications (in the form of smartphone banner alerts, limited SMS/text messages, and emails) and protect your home and property from water damage; Due to the water-tight and submersible design of the original Water Leak Sensor, an internal sounder/siren would not be heard outside of the water-tight housing. For an audible alarm, consider our Siren Alarm or consider the Water Leak Sensor 2 which has a built-in sounder.
- Low-Power Means Longer Battery Life: Because of the low power consumption, device batteries may last 5 years or more (depending on application and device usage/activity), on standard AAA Alkaline batteries (lithium batteries not required)!
- From Simple to Super-Smart: After setting up your notification preferences, keep it simple and let the YoLink system do the rest and monitor your home and property for you. Or, utilize available advanced automation features, including 3rd-party integration with Alexa and IFTTT, to interact with other YoLink and 3rd-party smart devices. Limited only by your imagination!
User questions & answers
Question: | Is there any monthly or yearly fee to connect to a service |
Answer: | It is hard to silence the alarm unless you make a minor modification in advance. Don't wait until the 130 dB siren is going before you work out how to disable the alarm. I've had it blaring in my ears while I frantically try to open the case to disconnect the battery, only to find that opening it is very difficult, even with the aid of a tool such as a flat-head screwdriver. What I've done since is filed down the locking tabs slightly, just enough that the plastic case still locks but is much easier to open when the alarm sounds, so that the battery can be disconnected. Then you can address the water leak in relative peace. |
Question: | I don't see any rope sensors which is bad for covering areas like washers, fridge, and water heaters. Any rope solutions I'm unaware of with this |
Answer: | The wire has no gauge markings- printed or imprinted. Comparing the wire side by side with a wire stripper, appears to be 18 gauge and it is definitely stranded copper. It is most assuredly no larger than 18 gauge so I would lean towards 18 to 20. I don’t know your application as to why you would need to extend the original length but I can tell you that the device is really loud when activated - if that helps you any. |
Question: | How to make with Alexa? Using a routine |
Answer: | Hello, thank you for your question. It is a constant, steady high pitch alarm sound. It will keep going until it is removed from water. |
Question: | What are the dimensions of the water sensors? (Inches and centimeters |
Answer: | Hello, they use 9V battery. Batteries are included. |

Question: | How long do these really last in use |
Answer: | There are 3 ways to connect the extension cable to YoLink Leak Sensor. 1. Soldering with a soldering iron: (1) Use a soldering iron to solder 2 common wires (regardless of positive or negative) to a set of probes on the Leak Sensor (a set of probes on the top of the leak sensor is recommended) (2) Fix the leak sensor in one place (If you use double-sided tape to paste the bottom of the leak sensor to the wall, the thickness of the double-sided tape must be higher than the height of the footpad on the bottom of the leak sensor (>1.5mm), otherwise, the leak sensor may not stick firmly ) (3) Place the 2 wires in the area to be detected. The 2 wires must be separated and fixed with a certain distance (10~15mm) But please kindly note: If you use a soldering iron to solder the wire, it may damage the two probes of the original device, which may cause the probes to rust in a humid environment. 2. Use glue or tape to fix (1) Use glue or tape to stick 2 ordinary wires (regardless of positive or negative) to a set of probes on the leak sensor (a set of probes on the top of the leak sensor is recommended) a. Stick the wire to the end of the probe and roll it into a circle or ring to expand the contact area & assist in fixing; b. It is recommended to use glue/tape with high viscosity, which must be firmly adhered to! (2) Fix the leak sensor in one place (If you use double-sided tape to paste the bottom of the leak sensor to the wall, the thickness of the double-sided tape must be higher than the height of the footpad on the bottom of the leak sensor (>1.5mm), otherwise, the leak sensor may not stick firmly) (3) Place the 2 wires in the area to be detected. The 2 wires must be separated and fixed with a certain distance (10~15mm) But please kindly note: If the glue/adhesive tape fails to stick the wire firmly, it may cause the wire to fall off and the leak sensor may not work properly. 3. Use the Alligator Clip We have found a way to use the Alligator Clip to clamp securely connecting the probes of the leak sensor and the extension cables, please visit the following video for instruction, https://youtu.be/x-bBXegLUcc Please wrap the leak sensor and the clip with tape to prevent it from falling off. As for the clip, you will find it on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0739YWFQ6 I hope that will be helpful to you. Any question, please kindly contact us, thanks! |
Question: | Is the battery really non replaceable |
Answer: | Yes, use a routine to enable the voice alert from Alexa for YoLink leak sensor. Please refer the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gr9MpQi2Vwo Thanks! John from YoSmart Team |
Question: | Once the alarm has been triggered , can they be reset for continued use |
Answer: | The dimension of YoLink Wate Leak Sensor is 2.44*2.44*0.93inches (62*62*23.5mm), the package dimension is 2.48*2.48*1.02inches (63*63*26mm). |

User questions & answers
Question: | If you place them on the bottom of a toilet tank will they detect seepage inside the tank and not go off every time the toilet is flushed |
Answer: | 06/2021 |
Question: | is there a low battery alert |
Answer: | New sensors can last for over 24 hours and the sound strength will diminish over time. If you've had the water sensor for almost 2 years or if it has gone off in the past the sound will not be as loud and will not siren for as long. You can always test the sensor to see how loud they sound to kind of determine how much life is left in them. Test them by place a damp paper towel across the two bottom prongs or place them in a few drops of water for a second or so. The stronger the electrical conduction---the stronger the alarm will sound--just keep that in mind. We recommend replacing them every 2 years and checking them semi annually when you test your smoke detectors. Also, if you come home and find the alarm has been going off but you are not sure for how long---throw it away and get a new one. It's difficult to determine the battery life if you don't know how long or how many times the alarm has been triggered. |
Question: | Can this device be used to detect rain as it enters a window so a sleeping person could be awakened to close the window |
Answer: | Yes, the battery is not replaceable. However, he battery seems to last quite a while. We place one in our water heater closet and under all sinks (bathrooms and kitchen). We also use them in our RV under sinks and behind the toilet. I believe we've replaced only a couple due to a dead battery, and they were at least 18 months or more old. |
Question: | This is a 3-pack: Are there three remote 6' water sensor wires |
Answer: | Yes, just dry (wipe the sensor off) and the alarm will stop and can be reused. The problem I have with them is, I can't hear them. My wife can. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is there any reason not to use lithium batteries with this device |
Answer: | These alarms MUST be placed on the floor, under the tank that holds the water. If the tank begins to leak, the alarm will go off and wake the dead when it detects the water on the floor coming from the tank!!!! You cannot put them in the tank as they cannot sit in water. The sensors on the bottom of the alarms activate set off the siren. |
Question: | Where are the sensors on this alarm? Can anyone show a photo of the sensor location? Thanks |
Answer: | Yes it wil chirp like a smoke alarm does when the battery power gets low according to the instructions. I can't verify that since my original batteries are still going strong |
Question: | How long battery last |
Answer: | I think you would have a bit more rain inside the window than you wish before the alarm would sound, but with enough rain it would eventually sound. The alarm sounds when there is enough moisture to complete the circuit between the metal contacts, so just a few of rain drops would most likely not activate the alarm. |
Question: | Does it sensor water from the bottom |
Answer: | Each alarm has it's own 6 foot wire. |

- 【Dual Bobber Probes Sensor Design】- It can detect water shortage or overflow. You can choose to use one or both functions according to your needs. The overflow probe is placed above the water level. When the water level rises to the detection position, the float will rise and trigger the magnetic induction, thus triggering the alarm. Instead, the water shortage probe is always placed in the underwater position, which triggers an alarm when the water level drops below the float.
- 【120 dB with Red Light Strobe Alarm - Volume Adjustable】- The volume of the water alarm can be adjusted according to the installation distance, and the alarm can also be used as a home safety alarm. You can DIY yourself, the alarm will be triggered when the two wires on the probe are shorted.
- 【Extendable Detection Line】- The detection line of this water detector can be extended to 164ft to meet the needs of your family. Please use good quality copper core extension wire.
- 【Low Power Design】- 9V replaceable battery power supply, standby for more than 1 year. When the battery power is low, the water sensor sound will become small or there is no alarm sound. Please replace the battery at this time.
User questions & answers
Question: | Some devices with 9v batteries run at 5 volts and the input is 5 volts. Is the input 5 volts or 9 volts |
Answer: | I would think that a 9 Volt lithium would be safer than an alkaline. These water detectors are supposed to signal low battery life. But you have to hear it and in fact it has to signal. The extra money for the lithium is worth it. There is no reason not to use lithium. |
Question: | OK for septic sump tank? Will the bits of stuff interfere with the sensor? Will it be too caustic |
Answer: | Hi PF, Thank you for your interest in our water leak detector. The sensing contacts are two silver lines that curve around one side and end under the detector, allowing it to sense water at any level. You can see them in our images if you click in and zoom. I hope this helps. Have a good day! Best, Content Specialist Mindful Design |
Question: | How much current can the sensors take to turn on something external to the alarm? What voltage is the alarm's input so an external thing won't hute it |
Answer: | I have owned my only 1 week. It’s a 9 volt battery and my guess depends on the quality of battery and how often it is triggered or alarm sounding. I would guess that you should test it regularly and replace it when the low battery alarm sounds or 1 year, whichever is shortest. |
Question: | Does the float hang by the wire into the water tank or does it have to be secured to something |
Answer: | There are 2 small metal nodes that you can see on the outside in the picture. When moisture connects the 2 nodes the alarm sounds. I test these devices with a moistened finger, not much water at all. Very high humidity can trigger them as well, that is, humidity above atmospheric norm. |

Product features
How it works
- Each water leak alarm contains one battery, no need to install battery, just place a Leak Alert in any location where there is a potential for water damage and flooding
- Lay the Leak Alert flat with the metal contacts facing down and touching the surface. When three metal sensing contacts at the bottom of the alarm contact with water, a loud 110 DB alarm sounds for up to 24 hours. In the event of a severe flood, the Leak Alert floats and continues to sound an alarm until the battery is depleted. To minimize property damage, respond to the alarm as quickly as possible.
- You can take the water sensor alarm out of the water to shut it.
Power Save
- A loud 110 DB alarm sounds for up to 24 hours.
- When the water leak alarm isn't in use, 23A 12V Alkaline battery for power supply can be used for more than one year.
