13 best lp gas detector rvs
An LP gas detector for RVs (Recreational Vehicles) is a safety device designed to detect the presence of liquefied petroleum (LP) gas, commonly known as propane, within the living space of an RV. Here are some key aspects associated with LP gas detectors for RVs:
Detection of Propane Gas: LP gas detectors are equipped with sensors that can detect the presence of propane gas in the air. Propane is commonly used in RVs for cooking, heating, and powering appliances.
Alarm System: When the detector senses a certain level of propane concentration, it triggers an alarm to alert the occupants of the RV.This alarm can be audible, visual, or both, depending on the specific model.
Safety Precaution: LP gas detectors play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of individuals inside an RV. Propane is highly flammable, and leaks can pose a serious risk of fire or explosion. Detecting gas leaks early allows for prompt action to mitigate potential dangers.
Power Source: LP gas detectors for RVs are often designed to operate on the RV's electrical system. Some models may also have a battery backup to ensure continued functionality in case of a power outage.
Installation: These detectors are typically designed for easy installation in RVs. They may be mounted on the wall or ceiling, and installation often involves connecting the unit to the RV's power supply.
Testing and Maintenance: It's essential to regularly test LP gas detectors to ensure they are functioning correctly. Many models have a test button that allows users to check the alarm and sensor functionality. Regular maintenance and replacement, as recommended by the manufacturer, are crucial for reliable performance.
Compliance with Standards: High-quality LP gas detectors for RVs comply with relevant safety standards to ensure their effectiveness in detecting gas leaks and providing timely warnings.
When selecting an LP gas detector for an RV, it's important to consider the specific features of the model, including its sensitivity, power source, ease of installation, and any additional functionalities. Following the manufacturer's guidelines for installation, testing, and maintenance is vital to ensure the continued safety of RV occupants.

User questions & answers
Question: | i'm replacing a 5 year old unit that is marked 12vdc 82ma. all i see for sale is 12vdc 108ma. any problem with this scenario |
Answer: | Small potatoes. These ma are small, in any event and i'd go for it. What surprised me is that my old and new - identical - units had the same amperage. Is the old unit real identical to this one? |
Question: | How many amps does this pull |
Answer: | I dont know, but the wire size is not all that big. Some versions of this are 9v battery powered which also suggests low current draw. |
Question: | What is the actual hole size that it fits into?? The measurements shown seem a little larger than the one I need to replace |
Answer: | The actual hole size that the back of the unit fits into is 5 1/4 inches by 2 inches. The hole is just a little bit bigger than the back of the unit. The outside front dimensions of the unit are 5 5/16 inch by 2 13/16. The unit takes awhile to actually start working. After installation and applying power the green light will blink for a good while before it goes steady green which indicates it is operating correctly. Do not try cleaning dust and dirt from the unit using a can of compressed air. I did and that is what made mine go bad. |
Question: | Is this unit hard wired, and how big is the back ? I am replacing another unit |
Answer: | Yes, this unit is meant to be hard-wired into a 12volt system. I'm planning to install it in my travel trailer tomorrow. The section that goes into the wall = 5 3/8"L x 1 7/8"W x 1 3/16"D (front panel that sits on the wall surface ~ 1/8" thick). |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the manufacturing date of the unit? I ask because they expire 84 months after manufacture..... if the unit has sat on the shelf 2 years... its |
Answer: | Yes it has memory mode! So it comes on in the last setting you had it set to. |
Question: | what is the expiration date |
Answer: | If fully charge, the lamp should last 2-30 hours depending on the light mode. Breathing light mode can be standby for 100 days. |
Question: | Is this a surface mount |
Answer: | No idea. I can’t find anything this works with. The hole in the plug is so tiny it doesn’t fit anything I own. Waste of money to me. Sorry. |
Question: | Can I get the mounting adapter plate...Part No. 35181 from you |
Answer: | I am using it to charge a Boruit ‘headlamp’ that is powered by (2) Ultrafire 18650 2600mAh 3.7V Li-ion batteries. This plug plugs directly into the flashlight to charge so I don’t have to remove the batteries and put into a separate charger block. It also seems to charge much faster this way. |

Question: | What is the actual size? And what is the date manufactured |
Answer: | 6.5" X 3" X 1 3/8" deep. Mfg date on back of it is 1/7/2119. Front says "Replace by 60 Months After Retail Sale. |
Question: | How do you know when this detector goes bad? Other than the production date on the back of it? Mine is dated May |
Answer: | I had the same problem - Dated August 19, 2016. Not excited if I have to replace this every 3 years or so, I must say. But that's better then it going off in the middle of the night for no reason! |
Question: | Can i mount in any direction |
Answer: | Why would you want to Mount it on an angle or upside down I really do not think the factory does that I’ve never seen it before are you serious mounted where the other one was and beside it needs to be mounted close to the floor Propane weighs 1 1/2 times more than air that’s why it’s mounted as close to the floor as it can be |
Question: | what voltage does low voltage indicator come on |
Answer: | When it goes below 12V |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is it black faced |
Answer: | The 7770.2 is a standard CCI Pre Tel 22. This item will fit. The back of this item fits well within the recessed cutout, and the face covers the cutout on all sides. The screw holes will not line up. Pre Tel 22 screw holes are 6.25 inches apart. This unit’s screw holes are 6 inches apart. Both units have one lead and one ground. Your wires may be yellow (match to red) and white (match to black). |
Question: | I have a cci control model number 7770.2 propane gas leak detector i believe it is bad will this fit in the cut out and doesn’t have a black and red |
Answer: | Yes, it fit in the same hole as the PreTell unit. I had to make a new screw hole on one side due to a slight difference. Looks and works great. |
Question: | Does this fit cci pre tell 22 ct out |
Answer: | I can’t answer firmly because I never had the problem. May be a very small leak but I can’t be sure. |
Question: | What does green going off and on over long peraiods of time mean |
Answer: | It measures about 3.5 inches safely as some of the flowers on the bottom hang over the bad a tiny bit. I really fit well on our cakes and we had a three tiered cake with the top part being only 4 inch square cake. |

Question: | I have a 30-442 no p no -wt will this work the same or is their a compatable replacement? is this from the mfg |
Answer: | For sure will be able to hear it.7 out of 10 sound level . |
Question: | So i have a pre tell 2 in a 98 rv. it checks for leaks when turned on and won't allow gas to flow until the test is complete. does this model do that |
Answer: | you may own Kidde 900-0076-01 KN-COPP-3 which looks similar but only detects carbon monoxide. |
Question: | IS this a replacement for a Miti SA-8 propane detector |
Answer: | download the manual from online http://www.manualslib.com/manual/111161/Nighthawk-Kn-Coeg-3.html |
Question: | Is this ok to use in a regular kitchen (i.e. in a home not RV)? If yes, what do I need to buy to convert regular AC power to the 12V this unit uses |
Answer: | As someone who went through firefighter 1 and 2 and got certified, yes. Natural gas will be detected by an "explosive gas detector." These detectors detect when natural gas or propane is approaching a percentage of the "Lower Explosive Limit", the percentage of the gas that needs to fill the airspace for combustion to occur. Since the two gases are different but are usually detected by the same sensor, they will go off for the gas that has a lower LEL for safety. If it goes off, leave your house imediately and call 911 for the fire department. Yes Natural gas has additives that make it smell like rotten eggs, but you can get used to this smell or it can be scrubbed entirely from the gas by dirt/soil. The latter is the cause of unexpected explosions in neighborhoods you may have periodically heard about in the news. Only way to know for sure is a detector. |

FIND GAS LEAKS AT HOME:
Find the location of any natural gas, propane, LP or fuel leaks by running sensor probe along a gas pipe, fuel line, or fittings near any gas smells. Pinpoint fuel leaks from your lawnmower or car. Gas leak is found when alarm sounds and LEDs light up. Don't pay a technician's $100+ diagnostic fee when you can find a gas leak anytime with this propane & natural gas detector.
STEPS/TIPS ON USE: (see video at https://www.amazon.com/vdp/17873f5854174d4db2087794a60238be)
-To detect leaks while minimizing false alarms, turn the sensitivity dial upward toward (+) until the device begins to alarm away from any gas leak. Turn sensitivity dial downward (-) slightly until alarm stops and 1st LED just turns off. Now, any small increase of gas level (as from a leak!) will cause the alarm to sound.
-If alarm sounds prematurely, sensitivity needs to be decreased to prevent false alarms.
-Each leak varies in leak rate and background gas concentration, so adjust sensitivity level to find any leak.
-Allow device to warm up sensor for 10s until yellow “Warm Up” light turns off.
SPECIFICATIONS:
Maximum Sensitivity: 50 ppm
Alarm range: 0.1%-40% LEL

User questions & answers
Question: | is this detector constantly plugged in like smoke detector |
Answer: | I suspect it can. If you have wind conditions of course that would affect how much gas the detector would pick up but if it was close enough to the source it should work |
Question: | How often should a gas detector be replaced? Every 5 years |
Answer: | No. LPG, natural gas, and town gas, according to the instructions. |
Question: | Is the alarm constant until the situation is addressed |
Answer: | I looked at the instruction manual and the box and it doesn't say anything about being UL listed. It is built in China but I don't know if that has anything to do with what is or isn't UL listed. Sorry I couldn't help more. |
Question: | Can I use with a battery |
Answer: | Hello, this product does not detect carbon monoxide, please pay attention when buying. Propane cannot be detected, but methane can be detected. |

Question: | What is the size of this alarm |
Answer: | Hello, actually the unit is good for 84 months after retail sale (when purchased by the end user). It say so right on the front of the unit. Thank You |
Question: | Can I mount this rotated 90 degrees |
Answer: | The actual life is 7 years of operation. The detector will monitor that and go into End Of Life mode after that. If you use your RV six months a year, it should last 14 years. However, for safety, it is best to change every 7 years regardless of actual use. That is 7 years from date of installation, not manufacture, so ignore the manufacture date when determining replacement. Record the install date so that you or a future owner will know the actual service age of the unit. |
