10 best lp gas alarms
LP gas alarms, also known as propane gas alarms, are safety devices designed to detect and alert occupants to the presence of potentially dangerous propane gas leaks in homes or recreational vehicles (RVs). Propane, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), is commonly used as a fuel source for heating, cooking, and powering various appliances in residential settings and RVs. However, if there is a leak or malfunction in the propane system, it can lead to a buildup of gas, which poses a significant safety risk due to its flammability and potential for explosion.
Here are some key features and information about LP gas alarms:
Detection Technology: LP gas alarms typically utilize sensors that are sensitive to the presence of propane gas. Common detection methods include electrochemical sensors, semiconductor sensors, and infrared sensors. When these sensors detect a certain concentration of propane in the air, they trigger an alarm.
Audible and Visual Alerts: LP gas alarms are equipped with audible alarms, such as loud sirens or beepers, to alert occupants to the gas leak. Many models also have visual indicators, like LED lights, that flash or change color when a leak is detected.
Power Source: These alarms are designed to operate on both AC (electricity) and DC (battery) power sources. This dual power capability ensures that the alarm continues to function even during power outages or when used in RVs with battery power.
Placement: Proper placement of LP gas alarms is crucial for effective detection. They should be installed near potential sources of propane leaks, such as gas appliances, gas lines, or in areas where propane tanks are stored.Refer to the manufacturer's guidelines for specific installation instructions.
Testing and Maintenance: Regular testing and maintenance are essential to ensure the continued effectiveness of LP gas alarms. Manufacturers typically provide instructions on how to test the alarm and recommend regular replacement of the device to ensure its reliability.
Compliance: It's important to select LP gas alarms that meet safety standards and certifications, such as those issued by organizations like Underwriters Laboratories (UL). Compliance ensures that the alarm has undergone rigorous testing and meets established safety criteria.
False Alarms: LP gas alarms can occasionally trigger false alarms due to environmental factors like humidity, temperature changes, or exposure to cleaning chemicals. Familiarize yourself with the alarm's user manual to understand how to differentiate between false alarms and actual gas leaks.
In summary, LP gas alarms are crucial safety devices designed to protect homes and RVs from the risks associated with propane gas leaks. They use various detection technologies to provide early warning of potential hazards, allowing occupants to take necessary precautions and avoid dangerous situations. Proper installation, testing, and maintenance are key to ensuring the reliable operation of LP gas alarms.

Protect your family from the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO), methane, and propane exposure with the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm. The Nighthawk is an easy-to-install unit that provides reliable protection against the dangers of CO and explosive gas. The digital display shows if gas is present indicates CO levels in parts per million, allowing you to see if, how, and when levels change.
Advanced Technology in an Easy-to-Install, Plug-In DesignDesigned for home use, the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is a UL-listed, A/C-powered, plug-in alarm that utilizes sophisticated electronic components and sensor technology to protect you and your family from the dangers of CO, methane, and propane exposure. It plugs directly into a standard A/C outlet and includes a 9-volt battery backup that provides continuous monitoring--even during power outages.
The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide, Methane, and Propane Exposure
The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.
Likewise, methane and propane gases are commonly used in homes for cooking, heating, and water heating. Although it happens rarely, gas leaks can sometimes occur inside the home, increasing the risk of fire or explosion.
Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO and Gas Levels
When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house by giving you an unmistakable signal when gas levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels of CO are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beeps every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed. If methane gas or propane gas is detected, the alarm will emit beeps every other second with "GAS" shown in the display.
Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is preferred among traditional CO and explosive gas alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous display also shows if gas is present.
LED Shows Sensor Status
With the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.
Convenient Mounting Options
The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.
The UL-listed Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the sound level I need one for basement and need to hear on ground floor |
Answer: | Dear cutomer, excuse that this prodcut Y301 can't detect hydrogen gas, it's mainly sensitive for methane and propane. thank you very much |
Question: | is this an explosive gas and carbon monoxide detector? it only says "carbon monoxide detector" on the actual product |
Answer: | Don't worry, it's normal, the large moisture change can affect the sensor performance, and may lead to false alarm, but the data on display only switch to 1,2 or 3, but won;t trigger the voice and light alarm. If the data become 5 or more than 5, voice and light alarm will be triggered. Thank you very much and best regards. |
Question: | No manual included. Do I just plug it in and test it? What does it display if gas is detected? Thanks fellow Amazoners |
Answer: | HI Niran, it's sensitive to methane and propane. We think it can't used to monitor and detect CO. thank you vey much |
Question: | I smell natural gas in my house, and am wondering if that is the same as explosive gas? Will it detect natural gas |
Answer: | Dear Karen, temporarily the Y301 doesn't get UL certification, it passed CE, FCC, EMC and RoHs. We are applying US ETL certification which is equivalent to UL certification. Thank you very much and best regards. |

Question: | I have a 30-442 no p no -wt will this work the same or is their a compatable replacement? is this from the mfg |
Answer: | For sure will be able to hear it.7 out of 10 sound level . |
Question: | So i have a pre tell 2 in a 98 rv. it checks for leaks when turned on and won't allow gas to flow until the test is complete. does this model do that |
Answer: | you may own Kidde 900-0076-01 KN-COPP-3 which looks similar but only detects carbon monoxide. |
Question: | IS this a replacement for a Miti SA-8 propane detector |
Answer: | download the manual from online http://www.manualslib.com/manual/111161/Nighthawk-Kn-Coeg-3.html |
Question: | Is this ok to use in a regular kitchen (i.e. in a home not RV)? If yes, what do I need to buy to convert regular AC power to the 12V this unit uses |
Answer: | As someone who went through firefighter 1 and 2 and got certified, yes. Natural gas will be detected by an "explosive gas detector." These detectors detect when natural gas or propane is approaching a percentage of the "Lower Explosive Limit", the percentage of the gas that needs to fill the airspace for combustion to occur. Since the two gases are different but are usually detected by the same sensor, they will go off for the gas that has a lower LEL for safety. If it goes off, leave your house imediately and call 911 for the fire department. Yes Natural gas has additives that make it smell like rotten eggs, but you can get used to this smell or it can be scrubbed entirely from the gas by dirt/soil. The latter is the cause of unexpected explosions in neighborhoods you may have periodically heard about in the news. Only way to know for sure is a detector. |

Question: | It says must be installed. mentioned wiring. i just want something that can be hung on a nail. i don't know how to do wiring. thx. for your help |
Answer: | Yes it works for propane & natural gas I have tried both to verify good product |
Question: | what is dimensions is this unit is the 12 mean deep |
Answer: | yes and alot of others |
Question: | Is this the alarm that will fit the 2013 lance 1885? tia |
Answer: | Natural Gas is 70-90% methane... no difference. |
Question: | What is the actual size |
Answer: | I doubt this product will work on sewer gas. I have found that basement floor drain, sink, or even washer machine drains that have not been used for extended time tends to have the water in the "P" trap evaporates allowing sewage gas to enter the room. Pour a quart of water into the drain to refill the P trap. Good luck. |

Answer: | Yes |
Question: | What year was this unit manufactured |
Answer: | If the GasKnight is flashing blue and talking at the same time, this means that it is going through the 3-minute warm-up process. |
Question: | I'm looking for a replacement for a pre tell 26. has anyone used this to replace a pre tell 26, specifically |
Answer: | You are describing the standard 3 minute long warm-up process. This warm-up process takes place upon plugging in the GasKnight. Simply wait for the 3 minutes for the warm-up to conclude and ensure that the blue light blinks once every 5 seconds thereafter signifying that the detector is operational. Although you probably do not need it, Please message us through Amazon messenger and we would be happy to send you a replacement instructions manual. |
Question: | This new detector doesn't beep when disconnected from the power supply. Is this normal |
Answer: | The lifespan of the GasKnight is 5 years although it may last longer. It recommended to replace the GasKnight after 5 years to ensure the sensor continues to function properly. |

User questions & answers
Question: | i'm replacing a 5 year old unit that is marked 12vdc 82ma. all i see for sale is 12vdc 108ma. any problem with this scenario |
Answer: | Small potatoes. These ma are small, in any event and i'd go for it. What surprised me is that my old and new - identical - units had the same amperage. Is the old unit real identical to this one? |
Question: | How many amps does this pull |
Answer: | I dont know, but the wire size is not all that big. Some versions of this are 9v battery powered which also suggests low current draw. |
Question: | What is the actual hole size that it fits into?? The measurements shown seem a little larger than the one I need to replace |
Answer: | The actual hole size that the back of the unit fits into is 5 1/4 inches by 2 inches. The hole is just a little bit bigger than the back of the unit. The outside front dimensions of the unit are 5 5/16 inch by 2 13/16. The unit takes awhile to actually start working. After installation and applying power the green light will blink for a good while before it goes steady green which indicates it is operating correctly. Do not try cleaning dust and dirt from the unit using a can of compressed air. I did and that is what made mine go bad. |
Question: | Is this unit hard wired, and how big is the back ? I am replacing another unit |
Answer: | Yes, this unit is meant to be hard-wired into a 12volt system. I'm planning to install it in my travel trailer tomorrow. The section that goes into the wall = 5 3/8"L x 1 7/8"W x 1 3/16"D (front panel that sits on the wall surface ~ 1/8" thick). |

User questions & answers
Question: | is this detector constantly plugged in like smoke detector |
Answer: | Generally yes although you could attach it to a portable external battery for smartphone as the power input is 5 volt micro USB. Hope this answers your question. |
Question: | How often should a gas detector be replaced? Every 5 years |
Answer: | It depends on the ambient conditions but generally the limit for operation of a gas detector is around 4-5 years. Most gas detectors fail in 2-4 years due to the filament type sensor used. Consequently, regular testing of the device is essential to ensure operability. |
Question: | Is the alarm constant until the situation is addressed |
Answer: | Yes, the alarm will continue sounding until the concentration of combustible gas is less than 5% of the lower explosive limit. |
Question: | Can I use with a battery |
Answer: | You could theoretically use the product with a battery and USB solar panel power supply but there is a limit if using with only a battery. For example, physical limit for 4000 mAh battery is 4000 mAh/110 mA = 36.4 hours assuming the FULL 4000 mAh is available for discharge which it is not usually as the 4000 mAh seen is rated by the battery manufacturer for charging of phones, not powering alarms. There is a natural drop of voltage as the battery discharges from ~5V to 3.6V. What can be done is get a battery with a larger capacity such as a 6600 mAh battery (or put multiple batteries in a parallel circuit if done safely). |
