14 best propane gas alarms

Propane gas alarms, also known as propane gas detectors or propane gas leak detectors, are essential safety devices designed to detect the presence of propane gas in indoor or enclosed spaces. These alarms play a critical role in fire safety and preventing potential explosions or fires caused by propane gas leaks. Here's what you need to know about propane gas alarms:

  1. Functionality: Propane gas alarms operate by monitoring the air for the presence of propane gas. When they detect a certain concentration of propane above a safe threshold, they trigger an audible alarm. This alert signals the potential danger of a propane leak, allowing occupants to evacuate the area and take appropriate safety measures.

  2. Detection Range: Propane gas alarms are sensitive to the presence of propane gas and can detect it at even low concentrations. The specific detection range may vary depending on the model and manufacturer.

  3. Power Source: Propane gas alarms are typically powered by electricity, batteries, or a combination of both. Battery-powered alarms are crucial for ensuring continued protection during power outages, as propane leaks can occur at any time.

  4. Placement: Proper placement of propane gas alarms is essential for effective detection. They should be installed in areas where propane appliances or systems are in use, such as kitchens, garages, basements, or utility rooms. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the best placement.

  5. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is necessary to ensure the reliability of propane gas alarms. This may include periodic testing, battery replacement (for battery-powered models), and cleaning to prevent false alarms.

  6. Audible and Visual Alerts: Most propane gas alarms emit a loud, audible alarm when propane gas is detected. Some models may also include visual indicators, such as flashing lights, to provide a clear visual warning.

  7. Interconnectivity: In some cases, propane gas alarms can be interconnected with other gas alarms or smoke detectors in your home. This feature ensures that if one alarm detects a problem, all interconnected alarms will sound, providing maximum safety.

  8. Compliance: It's important to choose propane gas alarms that meet recognized safety standards and regulations in your region. Look for products that are certified by relevant authorities or organizations to ensure their reliability and accuracy.

  9. Response to Alarms: In the event that a propane gas alarm goes off, it's essential to follow safety protocols. This typically involves immediately turning off the gas supply, ventilating the area, and contacting emergency services if necessary.

Propane gas alarms are an essential safety feature for homes, recreational vehicles (RVs), cabins, and other places where propane gas is used. They provide an early warning system that can potentially save lives and property by alerting occupants to the presence of a propane gas leak, allowing them to take swift action to mitigate the danger.

Protect your family from the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO), methane, and propane exposure with the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk Plug-In Carbon Monoxide and Explosive Gas Alarm. The Nighthawk is an easy-to-install unit that provides reliable protection against the dangers of CO and explosive gas. The digital display shows if gas is present indicates CO levels in parts per million, allowing you to see if, how, and when levels change.

Advanced Technology in an Easy-to-Install, Plug-In Design

Designed for home use, the Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is a UL-listed, A/C-powered, plug-in alarm that utilizes sophisticated electronic components and sensor technology to protect you and your family from the dangers of CO, methane, and propane exposure. It plugs directly into a standard A/C outlet and includes a 9-volt battery backup that provides continuous monitoring--even during power outages.

The Dangers of Carbon Monoxide, Methane, and Propane Exposure

The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses it can often go undiagnosed.

Likewise, methane and propane gases are commonly used in homes for cooking, heating, and water heating. Although it happens rarely, gas leaks can sometimes occur inside the home, increasing the risk of fire or explosion.

Audible Alarm Pattern Alerts you to Elevated CO and Gas Levels

When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk can help protect everyone in the house by giving you an unmistakable signal when gas levels have reached an unhealthy point. If unhealthy levels of CO are detected, the alarm will emit four quick audible beeps every five seconds until either levels decrease or the reset button is pressed. If methane gas or propane gas is detected, the alarm will emit beeps every other second with "GAS" shown in the display.

Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels

The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk is preferred among traditional CO and explosive gas alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows levels of CO that the unit has detected and stored-- from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds to indicate any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged. The continuous display also shows if gas is present.

LED Shows Sensor Status

With the KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk, you never have to wonder if the sensor is functioning properly. A blinking dot in the lower right-hand corner of the display denotes normal operation, so you can trust that it's working. In addition, you can test alarm function by pressing the test/reset button at any time to verify that the horn and electric circuitry are operating properly.

Convenient Mounting Options

The KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a low-profile design that makes it suitable for any room in your home. The detector can be plugged into any standard A/C outlet; it's plug can be snapped into the back of the unit and can be rotated so the alarm remains vertical, independent of whether the electrical socket is mounted vertically or horizontally. In addition, the alarm comes with a 6-foot extension cord, so the unit can be plugged into the wall outlet and then placed on a table or shelf. For the most thorough protection, place an alarm on every level of your home.

The UL-listed Kidde KN-COEG-3 Nighthawk has a seven-year life and is backed by a five-year limited warranty.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the sound level I need one for basement and need to hear on ground floor
Answer: Dear cutomer, excuse that this prodcut Y301 can't detect hydrogen gas, it's mainly sensitive for methane and propane. thank you very much
Question: is this an explosive gas and carbon monoxide detector? it only says "carbon monoxide detector" on the actual product
Answer: Don't worry, it's normal, the large moisture change can affect the sensor performance, and may lead to false alarm, but the data on display only switch to 1,2 or 3, but won;t trigger the voice and light alarm. If the data become 5 or more than 5, voice and light alarm will be triggered. Thank you very much and best regards.
Question: No manual included. Do I just plug it in and test it? What does it display if gas is detected? Thanks fellow Amazoners
Answer: HI Niran, it's sensitive to methane and propane. We think it can't used to monitor and detect CO. thank you vey much
Question: I smell natural gas in my house, and am wondering if that is the same as explosive gas? Will it detect natural gas
Answer: Dear Karen, temporarily the Y301 doesn't get UL certification, it passed CE, FCC, EMC and RoHs. We are applying US ETL certification which is equivalent to UL certification. Thank you very much and best regards.

User questions & answers

Question: I have a 30-442 no p no -wt will this work the same or is their a compatable replacement? is this from the mfg
Answer: For sure will be able to hear it.7 out of 10 sound level .
Question: So i have a pre tell 2 in a 98 rv. it checks for leaks when turned on and won't allow gas to flow until the test is complete. does this model do that
Answer: you may own Kidde 900-0076-01 KN-COPP-3 which looks similar but only detects carbon monoxide.
Question: IS this a replacement for a Miti SA-8 propane detector
Answer: download the manual from online http://www.manualslib.com/manual/111161/Nighthawk-Kn-Coeg-3.html
Question: Is this ok to use in a regular kitchen (i.e. in a home not RV)? If yes, what do I need to buy to convert regular AC power to the 12V this unit uses
Answer: As someone who went through firefighter 1 and 2 and got certified, yes. Natural gas will be detected by an "explosive gas detector." These detectors detect when natural gas or propane is approaching a percentage of the "Lower Explosive Limit", the percentage of the gas that needs to fill the airspace for combustion to occur. Since the two gases are different but are usually detected by the same sensor, they will go off for the gas that has a lower LEL for safety. If it goes off, leave your house imediately and call 911 for the fire department. Yes Natural gas has additives that make it smell like rotten eggs, but you can get used to this smell or it can be scrubbed entirely from the gas by dirt/soil. The latter is the cause of unexpected explosions in neighborhoods you may have periodically heard about in the news. Only way to know for sure is a detector.

User questions & answers

Question: Does the sensor degrade over time making it less reliable
Answer: No, it doesnt beep enough to need to turn the alarm off. If its beeping after the initial plug-in alarm, then you should call your gas company.
Question: Hello. i have bought this product 2 months ago. i see the reading is always switching between 0 an d 1. is it ok? i smell nothing
Answer: The location depends on the type of gas. For natural gas put it high. For propane put it near the floor. I'm worried by the low reviews because the alarm is not detecting any low level of gas.
Question: Does the unit make any kind of sound when there is no gas present
Answer: I would definitely call your gas company
Question: Would like to know where the unit should be installed, I have cabinets above the stove, directions say 30 cm from the ceiling
Answer: As long as the number is not 0, there is a gas leak. The larger the value, the more serious the leak.

User questions & answers

Question: Would this work for a gas water heater
Answer: Generally yes although you could attach it to a portable external battery for smartphone as the power input is 5 volt micro USB. Hope this answers your question.
Question: What does it mean if it flashes blue & talks
Answer: It depends on the ambient conditions but generally the limit for operation of a gas detector is around 4-5 years. Most gas detectors fail in 2-4 years due to the filament type sensor used. Consequently, regular testing of the device is essential to ensure operability.
Question: i had to unplug this from the wall. I plugged it back in it turned blue then keeps saying something that I don't understand. can't find instructions
Answer: Yes, the alarm will continue sounding until the concentration of combustible gas is less than 5% of the lower explosive limit.
Question: About how long will this product last before it needs to be replaced? And how do you know when it needs to be replaced
Answer: You could theoretically use the product with a battery and USB solar panel power supply but there is a limit if using with only a battery. For example, physical limit for 4000 mAh battery is 4000 mAh/110 mA = 36.4 hours assuming the FULL 4000 mAh is available for discharge which it is not usually as the 4000 mAh seen is rated by the battery manufacturer for charging of phones, not powering alarms. There is a natural drop of voltage as the battery discharges from ~5V to 3.6V. What can be done is get a battery with a larger capacity such as a 6600 mAh battery (or put multiple batteries in a parallel circuit if done safely).

User questions & answers

Question: could this detect hydrogen gas
Answer: SafeHome has new stock. Most of the MTI units that we ship are between 2 weeks and 6 months old. All MTI units have a 10 year shelf life and a 5 to 6 year use life. We only sell present stock, not old outdated units.
Question: I think the water vapor create a false alarm or affect sensor
Answer: I have installed it so I ain't going to pull it to check the date but if I remember it was only a couple months old.
Question: Can this detect carbon monoxide
Answer: The 30-442 is just a gas leak detector. It fits into a cutout of 5 3/8" x 1 7/8" Unit Front Measurements: 6.375"W x 2.875"H x 1"D. The screw holes are 6" apart. What are the old model dimensions?Unit Back Measurements: 5 3/8" x 1 7/8" (part that recesses into wall.
Question: UL certified
Answer: Question almost 4 years old. Just received mine and indeed it does not beep when power removed. Old CCI, low voltage it would beep, power disconnected it would alarm until voltage drained from system.

Product features

Techamor Natural Gas Detector-Y302

Y302 combustible gas detector is directly plugged into power socket to monitor constantly and can give out a visual and audible alarm when gas concentration is above 5% LEL. Alarm level ranges from 0% to 20% of LEL for multiple combustible gases including methane, propane, coal gas, town gas, LNG etc.

Y301 and Y302 are used for 24h gas monitor and detection, for find and locate exact gas leak point, refer to product Y201.

1.1 Plug-in Type (Y302) Installation

Directly plug into the power socket. Scientific and compact design leaves the 2nd outlet free for other devices.

1.2 Extension Type (Y301) Installation

Smooth walls use 3M circular double side adhesive sticker or fasten the detachable back plate by 2 sets of mounting screws.

Rough walls only use 2 sets of mounting screws to fasten the detachable back plate, pay attention to the direction of the detachable back plate, refer to the up arrow.

1.3 Natural Gas (Methane) VS LPG (Propane)

Natural Gas is typically supplied through a main utility line connected to your home, which is comprised of methane gas and much lighter than air. If leakage, natural gas rises towards ceiling and accumulates in areas near ceiling, mount your detector around 30cm (12 inches) away from the ceiling and 1.5~3 meters away from gas supply to ensure the earliest opportunity to detect methane leak.

Propane is typically supplied to homes via delivery truck in liquid form and stored near the home in propane tanks, and much heavier than air and will collect at lower levels. Mount detector around 30cm (12 inches) away from the floor and 1.5~3 meters away from gas supply to ensure the earliest opportunity to detect a propane leak.

2.1 Step 1: Enter into 180s Warm-up period

  • 180s for warm-up process when power on.
  • During warm up process, short press TEST Button can switch language, default is English.
  • Don’t apply gas to test during the warm-up process because the gas won’t be detected.

2.2 Step2: Normal working

  • Periodically observe the detector to make sure the Green Power Indicator is on. Press the TEST button, the three lights flash and there’s a voice prompt.
  • Test your alarm with butane from a cigarette lighter or propane source to make sure its function, recommend at least 1 time per 3 months.
  • Ocassionally, the data may skip into 1, it's maybe enviroment humidity lead to the sensor tolerance. Don;t worry, it's normal and will recover to 0.
  • Don't paint, don't apply abrasive solvents or other cleaners. Chemicals can permanently damage or temporarily contaminate the sensor inside.

2.3 Step 3: Alarm level ranges from 1% LEL (500ppm) to 20% LEL (10000ppm)

  • Pre-Alarm set point is 5 (= 5% LEL, 2500ppm).
  • The detector will give out a voice prompt and Red Alarm Indication flashes when the gas concentration is equal to or above 5.
  • Visual and audible alarm will continue until ambient gas concentration falls below alarm set point (5% LEL, 2500ppm).
  • When the gas concentration is more than 20 (=20% LEL, 10000ppm), the number on digital display will be changed into letter A.
  • Press the TEST button can mute/silence the Alarm noise, but red Alarm light will continue flash until gas concentration drops to normal status.

2.4 Step 4: Get after service support when Yellow Fault Indicator Flash on or ERR

  • If the Yellow Fault Indicator flash on or Digital Display will show ERR (abbreviation of error), which means sensor has lost efficacy and can’t finish data collection.
  • Engineers on staff from factory help to answer any questions you have related to products usage of natural gas, propane, methane, and sewer etc.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the manufacturing date of the unit? I ask because they expire 84 months after manufacture..... if the unit has sat on the shelf 2 years... its
Answer: Yes it has memory mode! So it comes on in the last setting you had it set to.
Question: what is the expiration date
Answer: If fully charge, the lamp should last 2-30 hours depending on the light mode. Breathing light mode can be standby for 100 days.
Question: Is this a surface mount
Answer: No idea. I can’t find anything this works with. The hole in the plug is so tiny it doesn’t fit anything I own. Waste of money to me. Sorry.
Question: Can I get the mounting adapter plate...Part No. 35181 from you
Answer: I am using it to charge a Boruit ‘headlamp’ that is powered by (2) Ultrafire 18650 2600mAh 3.7V Li-ion batteries. This plug plugs directly into the flashlight to charge so I don’t have to remove the batteries and put into a separate charger block. It also seems to charge much faster this way.

FIND GAS LEAKS AT HOME:

Find the location of any natural gas, propane, LP or fuel leaks by running sensor probe along a gas pipe, fuel line, or fittings near any gas smells. Pinpoint fuel leaks from your lawnmower or car. Gas leak is found when alarm sounds and LEDs light up. Don't pay a technician's $100+ diagnostic fee when you can find a gas leak anytime with this propane & natural gas detector.

STEPS/TIPS ON USE: (see video at https://www.amazon.com/vdp/17873f5854174d4db2087794a60238be)

-To detect leaks while minimizing false alarms, turn the sensitivity dial upward toward (+) until the device begins to alarm away from any gas leak. Turn sensitivity dial downward (-) slightly until alarm stops and 1st LED just turns off. Now, any small increase of gas level (as from a leak!) will cause the alarm to sound.

-If alarm sounds prematurely, sensitivity needs to be decreased to prevent false alarms.

-Each leak varies in leak rate and background gas concentration, so adjust sensitivity level to find any leak.

-Allow device to warm up sensor for 10s until yellow “Warm Up” light turns off.

SPECIFICATIONS:

Maximum Sensitivity: 50 ppm

Alarm range: 0.1%-40% LEL

Warm up time: 10s

User questions & answers

Question: is this detector constantly plugged in like smoke detector
Answer: I suspect it can. If you have wind conditions of course that would affect how much gas the detector would pick up but if it was close enough to the source it should work
Question: How often should a gas detector be replaced? Every 5 years
Answer: No. LPG, natural gas, and town gas, according to the instructions.
Question: Is the alarm constant until the situation is addressed
Answer: I looked at the instruction manual and the box and it doesn't say anything about being UL listed. It is built in China but I don't know if that has anything to do with what is or isn't UL listed. Sorry I couldn't help more.
Question: Can I use with a battery
Answer: Hello, this product does not detect carbon monoxide, please pay attention when buying. Propane cannot be detected, but methane can be detected.

User questions & answers

Question: i'm replacing a 5 year old unit that is marked 12vdc 82ma. all i see for sale is 12vdc 108ma. any problem with this scenario
Answer: Small potatoes. These ma are small, in any event and i'd go for it. What surprised me is that my old and new - identical - units had the same amperage. Is the old unit real identical to this one?
Question: How many amps does this pull
Answer: I dont know, but the wire size is not all that big. Some versions of this are 9v battery powered which also suggests low current draw.
Question: What is the actual hole size that it fits into?? The measurements shown seem a little larger than the one I need to replace
Answer: The actual hole size that the back of the unit fits into is 5 1/4 inches by 2 inches. The hole is just a little bit bigger than the back of the unit. The outside front dimensions of the unit are 5 5/16 inch by 2 13/16. The unit takes awhile to actually start working. After installation and applying power the green light will blink for a good while before it goes steady green which indicates it is operating correctly. Do not try cleaning dust and dirt from the unit using a can of compressed air. I did and that is what made mine go bad.
Question: Is this unit hard wired, and how big is the back ? I am replacing another unit
Answer: Yes, this unit is meant to be hard-wired into a 12volt system. I'm planning to install it in my travel trailer tomorrow. The section that goes into the wall = 5 3/8"L x 1 7/8"W x 1 3/16"D (front panel that sits on the wall surface ~ 1/8" thick).

User questions & answers

Question: It says must be installed. mentioned wiring. i just want something that can be hung on a nail. i don't know how to do wiring. thx. for your help
Answer: Yes it works for propane & natural gas I have tried both to verify good product
Question: what is dimensions is this unit is the 12 mean deep
Answer: yes and alot of others
Question: Is this the alarm that will fit the 2013 lance 1885? tia
Answer: Natural Gas is 70-90% methane... no difference.
Question: What is the actual size
Answer: I doubt this product will work on sewer gas. I have found that basement floor drain, sink, or even washer machine drains that have not been used for extended time tends to have the water in the "P" trap evaporates allowing sewage gas to enter the room. Pour a quart of water into the drain to refill the P trap. Good luck.
