12 best photoelectric smoke detector

A photoelectric smoke detector is a type of device used to detect the presence of smoke in an environment, typically as part of a fire alarm system. It is a crucial component of fire safety and security systems in homes, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities. Here are some key features and information about photoelectric smoke detectors:

  1. Detection Principle: Photoelectric smoke detectors work on the principle of light scattering. They contain a light source (usually an LED) and a photosensitive sensor. In normal conditions, the light from the source does not directly reach the sensor.

  2. Smoke Detection: When smoke particles enter the detection chamber, they scatter the light, causing some of it to reach the sensor. The sensor then triggers an alarm when it detects a significant increase in light levels due to the smoke particles.

  3. Response Time: Photoelectric smoke detectors are known for their quick response to slow, smoldering fires, which produce a significant amount of smoke before the flames become visible. This makes them suitable for detecting fires in the early stages.

  4. False Alarms: Photoelectric smoke detectors are less prone to false alarms caused by cooking fumes or steam compared to ionization smoke detectors. This makes them a preferred choice in many residential settings.

  5. Battery or Wired: Photoelectric smoke detectors are available in both battery-operated and hardwired versions. The hardwired detectors are connected to the building's electrical system and may include battery backups for continued operation during power outages.

  6. Interconnectability: Many modern photoelectric smoke detectors can be interconnected. When one detector senses smoke, it can trigger all interconnected detectors in the building, providing early warning to occupants in different areas.

  7. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the proper functioning of photoelectric smoke detectors. This includes periodic testing, cleaning, and replacement of batteries (for battery-powered models).

  8. Building Codes and Regulations: Building codes and regulations often require the installation of smoke detectors in residential and commercial buildings. Compliance with these codes is crucial to ensure the safety of occupants.

  9. Combination Detectors: Some smoke detectors combine photoelectric and ionization technologies to provide broader coverage and faster response to different types of fires. These are known as dual-sensor or combination detectors.

  10. Integration with Fire Alarm Systems: In commercial and industrial settings, photoelectric smoke detectors are typically integrated into larger fire alarm systems. These systems can include features like automatic notification to emergency services and centralized monitoring.

In summary, photoelectric smoke detectors are an integral part of fire safety and security systems. They use light scattering technology to detect the presence of smoke, making them effective at detecting smoldering fires and minimizing false alarms. Proper installation, maintenance, and compliance with building codes are essential to ensure their effectiveness in protecting lives and property.

First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector Alarm | Battery Operated, SCO5CN

FIRST ALERT

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.

The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers

Question: pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious
Answer: I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit.
Question: Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops
Answer: No
Question: I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago
Answer: The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling.
Question: How long do batteries last
Answer: Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain.

Both the sensor and the battery have a 10-year lifespan and replace the entire smoke alarm after 10 years. If you encounter any problems while using the product, please contact us and we will fix it for you at any time. Thanks
Question: How does this smoke detector mount to the ceiling
Answer: Excellent question to which I have no answer. I would recommend the manufacturer's website. I can tell you that I have purchased many smoke detectors over the years. This one has some serious substance to it. Solidly built. All componets are internal, including the battery. I highly recomend the product. If for some reason it quit working after 5 years, I would still feel that I got my money's worth.
Question: My alarm just started to go off. After removing it, it stopped. Then it started up again. There is no fire or smoke. Has my alarm become defective
Answer: I just took a look and it must only flash when testing - I just watched it for over a minute and there was no flash.

User questions & answers

Question: How often do these need to be replaced because of "end of life" warning? I feel like we are constantly replacing them and don't know what's normal
Answer: The installation instructions for this unit notes that it can be wall mounted, "If allowed by local building codes," (check with your Buildings Department - since several codes are in use in various localities) - with the proviso that the top of the mounted unit must be between "4 inches and 8 inches" below the wall-ceiling meeting, to avoid dead air space.
Question: Will this First Alert unit plug into my existing BRK 3-wire pigtail connector, or do I have to buy a BRK unit? Thank you
Answer: Off-white.
Question: Does anyone know if this smoke/carbon monoxide alarm is compatible with a house full of First Alert 9120Bs (smoke only)? Want them all connected
Answer: Nor sure about that particular standard, but box states that it complies with ANSI/UL Standards, California state fire marshal, FHA, HUD, and National Fire Protection Association.
Question: I have Model No. SC7010BV. Is the same replacement without the "V
Answer: The beep is effective. It always seems to start in the middle of the night. I twist the unit off the ceiling and do a battery swap and have it back on the ceiling in less than a minute, craw back into bed before really waking up. It's not a pain to replace the batteries, it's very easy. Simply slide the tray out and pop new ones in. The batteries fit snuggly in the compartment and there are tabs that allow you to push the batteries out by applying pressure with your thumbs from the back side. There is an optional screw hole to make the battery compartment tamper resistant. This prevents people from easily taking the batteries to power their remote controls or whatever. When fire marshals inspect fire related deaths it's not uncommon to find the smoke and fire detectors had no batteries installed. This simple, optional, screw might seem like "a pain" to some people, but it's an easy way to save your life. This is a great unit. I have 6 in my house and I highly recommend them to everyone.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the manufacture date on these items
Answer: Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off.
Question: If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert
Answer: Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector.
Question: Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't
Answer: Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D.
Question: Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals
Answer: Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this.
Question: When these are interconnected with other units, can hushing one of them hush all of them? Some of mine are in places that are hard to get to
Answer: I paid FOR for 6 and only got 4. It’s listed as 6. I had to buy two more from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM.
Question: does it come with the hardwire connector
Answer: Does not connect to hard wire. Only battery
Question: Do you have to hardwire it in? Can it run on just the battery
Answer: I just checked 2 of them, and am unable to locate that information.
Question: How do you tell if it is working properly. Is it supposed to have a constant light
Answer: The back cover comes off install battery and replace

User questions & answers

Question: who is the manufacturer? is it kidde? what is the model number
Answer: yes you need a 12vdc supply to run 12vdc motors as the Motor Speed PWM Controller dos not reduce voltage , it work with pulses and pass a percentage of any input voltage with in the mentioned range (10v-30v)
Question: where is it made (country of manufacture)? is it UL rated
Answer: Actually - No, not if it's something you want to ride on. The circuitry in this is simply not heavy duty enough to handle that kind of load or that large a motor. This circuit is intended for something on the order of a toy motor, no more than an amp or two at most.
Question: where is it made
Answer: You might cure that with a capacitor with a voltage rating higher than the supply voltage, and perhaps a capacity rating of 100 mfd. This capacitor type is polarity rated, so you would need to put it across the terminals going to the fan in way you are supplying the voltage. You would also have to be sure not to reverse the power to make the fan go the other direction. capacitor could probably be as low as 20 mfd. It can be placed anywhere in the line, or right at the fan. The capacitor should smooth out the chopping voltage. As scott says, it might not list to run on low power.
Question: Does it take a standard 9 volt for replacement
Answer: No. Your scooter will require a controller that will handle at least 25 amps (the formula is 300 watts, divided by 12 volts, equals 25 amps). This controller is rated at 3 amps continuous and 4 amps peak - at 12 volts that's only 36 watts continuous.

User questions & answers

Question: can it be reset after going off
Answer: Your warranty starts at the date of purchase. Keep your receipt. Your 5 year shelf life starts the day you power it up. The expiration date is hard coded into the software and only starts the day you plug it in..... This is from BRK WEBSITE
Question: What is the required weekly LED testing
Answer: It doesnt matter. If you have a device alarming, you, family and pets need to remove yourself from the house and possibly call fire department. Both sources will kill you.
Question: dimensions please? not package dimensions,,,i don't care about shipping. why is such basic info so elusive on amazon
Answer: According to the National Fire Protection Association: Choose smoke alarms that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory.Install smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. On levels without bedrooms, install alarms in the living room (or den or family room) or near the stairway to the upper level, or in both locations.Smoke alarms installed in the basement should be installed on the ceiling at the bottom of the stairs leading to the next level.Smoke alarms should be installed at least 10 feet (3 meters) from a cooking appliance to minimize false alarms when cooking.Mount smoke alarms high on walls or ceilings (remember, smoke rises). Wall-mounted alarms should be installed not more than 12 inches away from the ceiling (to the top of the alarm). If you have ceilings that are pitched, install the alarm within 3 feet of the peak but not within the apex of the peak (four inches down from the peak).
Question: how often do th ebatteries need replacing? Nothing was mentioned on the Amazon page. Thanks
Answer: The "radioactive part" is how it works. Don't like it? Don't buy it. Simple. As for false alarms, this unit with its "radioactive part" is actually much more likely to give false alarms that condition people to ignore them. It is also much less sensitive to the smoldering, smoke-producing fires that are more common in homes. That's why ionization detectors are no longer recommended in residential settings. Experts now recommend only photoelectric devices in homes, so if you have these, you should replace all of them with the SC7010B.
