12 best photoelectric smoke alarm

A photoelectric smoke alarm is a type of smoke detector commonly used in residential and commercial buildings to detect the presence of smoke and potential fires. Unlike ionization smoke alarms, which use radioactive materials to detect smoke particles, photoelectric smoke alarms operate on a different principle based on light detection. Here's how they work and some key features:

  1. Light-Based Detection: Photoelectric smoke alarms have a light source (usually an LED) and a light-sensitive sensor. When smoke particles enter the smoke chamber, they scatter the light, causing it to hit the sensor.

  2. Alarm Trigger: When the sensor detects a significant change in light levels due to smoke scattering, the smoke alarm is triggered. This change in light activates the alarm sounder, alerting occupants to the presence of smoke and a potential fire.

  3. Early Detection: Photoelectric smoke alarms are known for their effectiveness in detecting smoldering fires and slow-burning fires, which produce a lot of smoke before they burst into flames. This early detection capability can provide valuable time for occupants to evacuate safely or take action to mitigate the fire.

  4. Reduced False Alarms: Photoelectric smoke alarms are less prone to false alarms caused by cooking fumes, steam, or dust compared to ionization smoke alarms. This makes them a preferred choice in kitchens and bathrooms.

  5. Battery-Powered and Hardwired Options: Photoelectric smoke alarms are available in both battery-powered and hardwired versions. Hardwired alarms are typically interconnected, so if one alarm is triggered, all interconnected alarms throughout the building will sound simultaneously, enhancing safety.

  6. Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning the alarm to remove dust and testing it with the built-in test button, is essential to ensure the alarm's proper functioning.

  7. Compliance with Regulations: Photoelectric smoke alarms are often required by building codes and regulations to be installed in certain areas of residential and commercial buildings to meet fire safety standards.

  8. Integration with Smart Home Systems: Some photoelectric smoke alarms can be integrated into smart home systems, allowing for remote monitoring and notifications via smartphones or other devices.

In summary, photoelectric smoke alarms are a crucial component of fire safety systems, designed to detect smoke early and provide timely alerts to occupants, potentially saving lives and property in the event of a fire. They are known for their reliability, reduced false alarms, and compatibility with modern smart home technology.

First Alert Smoke Detector and Carbon Monoxide Detector Alarm | Battery Operated, SCO5CN

FIRST ALERT

Based on 14 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.

The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers

Question: pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious
Answer: I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit.
Question: Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops
Answer: No
Question: I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago
Answer: The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling.
Question: How long do batteries last
Answer: Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain.

Both the sensor and the battery have a 10-year lifespan and replace the entire smoke alarm after 10 years. If you encounter any problems while using the product, please contact us and we will fix it for you at any time. Thanks
Question: How does this smoke detector mount to the ceiling
Answer: Excellent question to which I have no answer. I would recommend the manufacturer's website. I can tell you that I have purchased many smoke detectors over the years. This one has some serious substance to it. Solidly built. All componets are internal, including the battery. I highly recomend the product. If for some reason it quit working after 5 years, I would still feel that I got my money's worth.
Question: My alarm just started to go off. After removing it, it stopped. Then it started up again. There is no fire or smoke. Has my alarm become defective
Answer: I just took a look and it must only flash when testing - I just watched it for over a minute and there was no flash.

User questions & answers

Question: California has banned smoke detectors with removable batteries. This battery is sealed in but it says it can't ship to California. Why not
Answer: The mount screws will fit but the base plate itself is slightly smaller and you might have to touch up paint. The connectors will fit as well so no need to change those
Question: Does this work by photoelectric or ionization or both
Answer: Thomas it is required (International Fire Code and Electrical Code) that all detectors go off to alert all occupants. The manufactures recommend frequent dusting with a vacuum to prevent dust or spiders from causing false alarms. A 3rd wired is required in the electrical box to interconnect the detectors (Black is commonly Power, White is Neutral and Red is the Interconnect wire with bare being the ground which is not connected to the smoke alarm). The smoke alarm pigtail connector wires are black, white and orange (black to black, white to white and orange to red). Chirping is a low battery or loss of electrical power indication only. Sustained repeated loud blasts are an alarm event on the 4th blast it triggers the other detectors in the residence that are interconnected (hold the test button until the 4th blast to test the interconnection function). Mark retired Fire Marshal
Question: is this unit U.L rated
Answer: The unit that initiated the alarm will display a red light instead of green (while the others remain green). The same is true for the low battery latch - the unit with the low battery will flash green instead of having a steady green light. We had one unit (of 9) that kept false alarming when first installed, but we had just completed a renovation so may have been due to dust. It was nice to easily identify which unit initiated the alarm. No problems since replacing that one unit.
Question: is this unit U.L rated
Answer: Yes. I just replaced 2 very old (older than 10 years) BRK Electronics Model 4120B smoke detectors with these newer First Alert/BRK Brand Model 9120B units. My older units were yellowed with age, so I also replaced the plastic base. I did reuse the 3 pin electrical connector, as the "old" electrical connector matches the new unit. The new smoke detectors are functioning/self-testing normally.

Kidde 21010170 10 Year Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm Detector | Photoelectric | Kitchen | Model P3010K-CO

Kidde

Based on 1 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The Kidde P3010K-CO is a 10-year, sealed battery, smoke and carbon monoxide alarm that features photoelectric and electrochemical sensing technology with Smart Hush feature. This combination alarm combines the detection capabilities of a photoelectric sensor with that of an electrochemical sensor, which is used to detect CO. When either sensor notices a potential hazard, it will communicate with the other. Depending on what is detected, the alarm will adjust its smoke sensitivity in order to better discriminate between a real hazard and a false one. This constant communication enhances the alarm’s overall performance and significantly reduces the potential for a nuisance alarm. The sealed in lithium battery will power the unit for the entirety of its 10 year life, eliminating the need for battery replacement and worry about unauthorized battery removal. The alarm provides continuous protection from smoke and carbon monoxide, even during power outages. The alarm will automatically activate when it is attached to the mounting bracket; there are no pull-tabs, no switches, everything is automatic. At the end of alarm life, the unit will chirp, indicating the alarm is in need of replacement. The customer can use a simple tool such as a screwdriver to deactivate the unit, stopping the chirp and making it safe for disposal. Industry experts (such as the NFPA), recommend that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fires that can occur within the home. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with fast flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible fire particles (associated with slow smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde Worry-Free Kitchen Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Part Number(Ordering Number):21009667. Put smoke alarms at both ends of a bedroom hallway or large room if the hallway or room is more than 30 feet long.

  • Combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarm – Smoke and CO sensing technologies work together to detect real fires faster and reduce cooking-related nuisance alarms.
  • Sealed-in lithium battery – Sealed-in lithium power supply; No battery replacement required over the 10 year life of the alarm. Eliminates worry about battery removal or unauthorized deactivation of alarm.
  • Photoelectric Sensor – Smoke alarm contains advanced photoelectric sensor that may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms.
  • Self-activation – Alarm automatically activates when attached to the mounting bracket.
  • Alarm memory – Rapidly flashing LED alerts user if the alarm has sounded since the last time the test/reset button was used.

Answer: yes you need a 12vdc supply to run 12vdc motors as the Motor Speed PWM Controller dos not reduce voltage , it work with pulses and pass a percentage of any input voltage with in the mentioned range (10v-30v)
Question: where is it made (country of manufacture)? is it UL rated
Answer: Actually - No, not if it's something you want to ride on. The circuitry in this is simply not heavy duty enough to handle that kind of load or that large a motor. This circuit is intended for something on the order of a toy motor, no more than an amp or two at most.
Question: where is it made
Answer: You might cure that with a capacitor with a voltage rating higher than the supply voltage, and perhaps a capacity rating of 100 mfd. This capacitor type is polarity rated, so you would need to put it across the terminals going to the fan in way you are supplying the voltage. You would also have to be sure not to reverse the power to make the fan go the other direction. capacitor could probably be as low as 20 mfd. It can be placed anywhere in the line, or right at the fan. The capacitor should smooth out the chopping voltage. As scott says, it might not list to run on low power.
Question: Does it take a standard 9 volt for replacement
Answer: No. Your scooter will require a controller that will handle at least 25 amps (the formula is 300 watts, divided by 12 volts, equals 25 amps). This controller is rated at 3 amps continuous and 4 amps peak - at 12 volts that's only 36 watts continuous.

User questions & answers

Question: i need replace a fire alarm that was made in1990. it 120 v and only has 2 wires going to it, look at the photo u see 3 wires could my not be groud
Answer: If you can break both common and power it should work
Question: Can you post a pic of the quick connect power harness? I am replacing a defective unit and want to see if it will fit
Answer: I installed a 30amp inline fuse on the power out lead. It is easier to pop in a new fuse then walk home and replace the speed controller. Never fear, the controller will eventually blow but I am now getting a year instead of 3 months use out of the controller..
Question: Can these be installed in combination with Kidde I12040 alarms? They would be hard wired into one system
Answer: As far as I can fixed at the low end at 12 volts and matched to the 12 volt fan I am running. It has a nice speed control and can be turned off. If you need a lower voltage I would look for one matched exactly to your voltage requirements. If it is out of spec you cannot be guaranteed or safe.
Question: I frequently get false alarms in the middle of the night with these. Is there another brand compatible with the interconnect I can replace them with
Answer: The version I received as of 2019-05-28 does fully turn off the output; there's a switch built into the potentiometer used to control the duty cycle. With that switch off, I measure 0 input power draw at 12v, but my meter tolerance is a few mA so it could possibly be drawing up to ~5ma when "off".

Product description

The Kidde P3010CU is a 10 Year sealed battery smoke and carbon monoxide alarm with a voice warning system that features photoelectric and electrochemical sensing technology with Smart Hush feature. This combination alarm combines the detection capabilities of a photoelectric sensor with that of an electrochemical sensor which is used to detect CO. When either sensor notices a potential hazard, it will communicate with the other. Depending on what is detected, the alarm will adjust its smoke sensitivity in order to better discriminate between a real hazard and a false one. This constant communication enhances the alarms overall performance and significantly reduces the potential for a nuisance alarm.

  • Voice Alarm - Announces the hazard type detected
  • Test/Hush Button - A single button that tests alarm circuitry and temporarily silences nuisance alarms
  • LED Indicator - A flashing red indicator blinks to correspond with alarms sound, unit error mode, and standby condition
  • Combined Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm - Unique sensor algorithm detects real fires faster and reduces nuisance alarms
  • Sealed-in Lithium Battery - Unit will continue to operate for years. Alerts user to replace alarm after 10 years of operation

User questions & answers

Question: How to test the unit
Answer: It’s not IP certified, you would need to find some way to waterproof it. If you bought the 60A it SHOULD work. What’s the max amperage, even under load that trolling motor would pull? The peak instantaneous amperage is what you need to figure out. If I were you, I’d find an 80A controller to play it safe.
Question: how to turn on the unit, how to know if it is working properly
Answer: I used cat5 Ethernet cable. Works great.

First Alert Dual-Sensor Smoke and Fire Alarm, Battery Powered, Frustration-Free Packaging, SA320CN

FIRST ALERT

Based on 2 reviews Check latest price

Product description

While all smoke alarms are designed to detect smoke, different sensing technologies react differently to certain types of fires. This alarm makes use of both ionization and photoelectric sensors to offer the earliest possible warning regardless of the type of fire. Sometimes a fire can smolder for hours before erupting into flames. Photoelectric Sensing Technology is more sensitive than Ionization Sensing Technology at detecting these sorts of smoldering fires, like those caused by cigarettes burning in couches or bedding. Other fires erupt into flames quickly, like kitchen grease fires or fires fueled by paper burning in a wastebasket. Ionization Sensing Technology is generally more sensitive than Photoelectric Sensing Technology at detecting these sorts of flaming fires.

  • Help keep your family safe with this battery operated smoke alarm; It requires no rewiring for installation and provides continuous monitoring even if there's a power failure
  • Equipped with both a photoelectric and ionization sensor to quickly detect both fast burning, and smoldering fires
  • Single test/silence button lets you easily check alarm function and mute false alarms; Use Polaroid AA batteries for best results
  • Loud 85 decibel siren sounds to alert you to danger
  • To ensure complete protection make sure to place one on each level of your home and in each bedroom
  • First Alert has been the most trusted brand in home safety since launching the first residential smoke alarm in 1958 (Based on a First Alert brand trust survey in February 2018)

User questions & answers

Question: Can this unit be side wall mounted or is it the standard top of ceiling
Answer: The max current is 2A.
Question: The spec sheet says color is gray - are they gray or white
Answer: Easily - they seem to be a typical fiberglass base board, and you can score them across the holes with a box cutter type knife, or cut the boards with a saw blade. Be conscious of the dust - it's probably not good to breathe. Typically, I cut them with a hacksaw blade, which probably isn't the most graceful way to do it, but its quick and easy enough.
Question: Does this alarm meet the Underwriters Laboratories Standard
Answer: Not sure about M2. But M2.5 do not fit without stripping nylon threads. i.e. THE MOUNTING HOLES ARE NOT M2.5. Raspberry Pi, Pico, and associated boards use M2.5 mounting holes. So now I have to buy another set of standoffs. I will be buying M2 nylon screws/standoffs and try those. Will come back to the question after I try M2.
Question: Does the unit beep to tell you that the battery is running low
Answer: They are isolated

Product features

Smoke Alarms

Place at least 10 feet from kitchen/stove, and on the ceiling or high on a wall, no more than 10 inches from top.

Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Carbon monoxide alarms can be placed anywhere, not just the ceiling or high on a wall. They should be replaced every 5 to 7 years.

Fire Extinguishers

Keep in the kitchen and garage, but make sure to have the right grade for the type of fire that might occur.

Escape Ladders

Have at least one if your home has more than one story. Each room needs 2 escape routes; in most bedrooms it's the window, so have a ladder nearby.
