12 best fire alarms
Fire alarms, also known as smoke detectors or fire detection systems, are crucial safety devices designed to alert individuals and authorities to the presence of a fire or smoke in a building or residential space. These devices play a vital role in fire safety and can save lives by providing early warning in the event of a fire. Here's what you need to know about fire alarms:
Types of Fire Alarms:
- Ionization Smoke Detectors: These alarms are sensitive to fast-burning, flaming fires and are more responsive to small smoke particles produced by these fires.
- Photoelectric Smoke Detectors: These alarms are more effective at detecting smoldering fires, such as those caused by smoldering upholstery or overheated wiring.
- Combination Smoke Alarms: These devices combine both ionization and photoelectric sensors to provide comprehensive fire detection.
- Heat Alarms: Unlike smoke detectors, heat alarms are triggered by an increase in temperature rather than smoke. They are typically used in areas where smoke detectors may produce false alarms, such as kitchens.
Features and Functions:
- Modern fire alarms may include features such as battery backup to ensure they operate during power outages.
- Some fire alarms can be interconnected so that when one alarm detects a fire, all alarms in the network sound to alert occupants throughout the building.
- Some advanced models can send alerts to a smartphone or a central monitoring system, providing remote monitoring capabilities.
Installation and Maintenance:
- Fire alarms should be installed in various locations throughout a home or building, including bedrooms, hallways, and common areas.
- It's essential to follow manufacturer instructions for installation and maintenance to ensure the alarms function correctly.
- Regular testing and battery replacement (if applicable) are crucial to keep the fire alarms in working order.
Legal Requirements:
- Building codes and regulations typically require the installation of fire alarms in residential and commercial properties to meet fire safety standards.
- In some jurisdictions, landlords and property owners are legally obligated to provide working fire alarms in rental units.
Emergency Response:
- When a fire alarm is activated, it produces a loud, audible signal to alert occupants to evacuate the building immediately.
- It's essential to have an established escape plan and to know the location of fire exits and meeting points in case of a fire emergency.
Fire alarms are a critical component of fire safety systems, and their proper installation and maintenance can significantly reduce the risk of fire-related injuries and fatalities. Regularly checking and testing your fire alarms is essential to ensure they are in working condition and can provide early warning in case of a fire.

User questions & answers
Question: | My entire home is equipped with BRK smoke detector (4120 B) and Carbon Monox Det (CO50120B). They need replacing. Will new BRK fit extant casings |
Answer: | Yes all the wired Nest Protect needs is the 120V hot (black) and neutral (white) wires in the electrical box connected to the plug-in pigtail that comes with the Protect. If your house has multiple detectors now you will usually also find a red wire in the electrical box that interconnects your old detectors so that if one goes off they all sound. That wire is no longer needed with the Protect so you just cap it with a wire nut. |
Question: | can these be connected together so if one is set off they all go off |
Answer: | Yes, but only if you are connected to the internet and then only for the last ten days, and only if the level rises above the heads up level (which is 70ppm and rising for around an hour or a shorter period if over 150ppm). To counter what someone else's answer was - Carbon monoxide does NOT sink. It is in fact lighter than air (CO has an atomic weight of 28 versus Nitrogen (N2) which is also 28 - but marginally heavier (by 0.003 amu due to heavier isotopes), Oxygen (O2) which is 32 and Argon which is 40. However the weight is similar enough in the air in your house that it tends to distribute as a fluid and is measurable anywhere in a room; it really depends upon how air moves through the space. The levels tend to fluctuate rapidly as CO distributes and any outside air mixes in and additional CO is added. Overall, there is no perfect way to measure the CO levels with one device in one place, but this is as good as most people need. |
Question: | How does the Alarm Latch feature "easily identify initiating alarm"? This is major problem with false alarms on my existing Kidde/Firex dual alarms |
Answer: | I just checked this for you. I unplugged my wifi router and started a test. All detectors alarmed as expected. So, yes, the system works even without active wifi. |
Question: | Can a BRK Model 92120B smoke detector directly plug in and replace an old BRK Model 4120B smoke detector (without an adapter |
Answer: | I think very few here understand the question. National code requires interconnected smoke detectors as of 2004, there is an extra wire in the circuit and all smoke detectors are on that wire for 'signal'. When one alarms they should ALL alarm. If I am reading the answers correctly, NEST does not comply with the signal wire. However, it looks like it does set up its own wireless network to act like they are all interconnected. To be honest, after paying for the extra wire behind the wall, why would I want to by 6-8 nests at $100 each when the originals are 20-30 each? This way there is one smart point to notify if any detector is going off. Nests way 6-9 smoke detectors, 6-8 login, 6-8 ip address. Ugh, what a nightmare! |

Product description
The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers
Question: | pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious |
Answer: | I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit. |
Question: | Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago |
Answer: | The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling. |
Question: | How long do batteries last |
Answer: | Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the manufacture date on these items |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, but not the way you mean. When the alarms go off, there is always one alarm going off and setting off all of the others. This alarm will have a green light flashing every second as well as the red light. You have to identify that alarm and either put it in HUSH mode or unplug it and take it down to stop the others. This is intentional so that if you are not leaving the house then you are identifying and investigating where the smoke situation is and if there is danger. The HUSH mode will make the alarm require more smoke to go off and for a small amount of smoke will stop it for about 8 minutes If there is too much smoke, the HUSH mode will not stop the alarm for going off. |
Question: | If the alarm goes off, how can you tell whether it's due to CO or fire if there is no voice alert |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, this alarm comes with a wiring harness connector. |
Question: | Because its a combo alarm where is the best place to install it since smoke rises and carbon monoxide doesn't |
Answer: | Hello. The answer is no, the battery is only a temporary back up. If you want an alarm that is battery only, you will want our KN-COPE-D. |
Question: | Why does this model contain the radioactive part? I am sure you are going to tell me that it is a trace amount and that it has all approvals |
Answer: | Hello. When plugged in AC power, it is supposed to have a solid green LED light. When running on battery alone, it should have a green light that flickers every 60 seconds. If this is not what is happening, call us when you are on location with a ladder at 1-800-880-6788 so we can figure out what is going on and how we can resolve this. |
Question: | When these are interconnected with other units, can hushing one of them hush all of them? Some of mine are in places that are hard to get to |
Answer: | I paid FOR for 6 and only got 4. It’s listed as 6. I had to buy two more from Home Depot. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM. |
Question: | does it come with the hardwire connector |
Answer: | Does not connect to hard wire. Only battery |
Question: | Do you have to hardwire it in? Can it run on just the battery |
Answer: | I just checked 2 of them, and am unable to locate that information. |
Question: | How do you tell if it is working properly. Is it supposed to have a constant light |
Answer: | The back cover comes off install battery and replace |

User questions & answers
Question: | I ordered the 4 pack and 3 of them worked fine. One would just make a slight sound when tested. I would just like to have the one replaced. Not sure h |
Answer: | Good morning! At this time, there is no adapter for this model to make it switchable. Sorry.Spray Foam Systems |
Question: | can this model be interconnected |
Answer: | the one 3m recommended to me was M Multi Gas/Vapor Cartridge/Filter 60926, P100 Respiratory Protection (Pack of 2 individual cartridges) |
Question: | Can these be battery and hard wired |
Answer: | Probably ok for fallout. It depends more on the filter than the mask, as with fallout you're essentially performing dust protection for very very fine particulate. A P100 filter (~$10 per set) is the best consumer protection you can buy from 3M, and it could very well do the job. |
Question: | Are there 2 detectors in this offer |
Answer: | I used the website below that was extremely informative for sizes. The mask is the same size and has adjustable straps for all head sizes. The sizing differences of small, medium & large have to do with the inside rubber seal the goes around your face (cheeks, chin, forehead). There is a 3M mask fit test kit but it costs $240 from 3M. 80% of people fit the Medium size. 5% small and 15% large. The website below offers a visual comparison of how the gaskets differ in size. PHOTOELECTRIC SMOKE ALARM IS FAR MORE SENSITIVE AND EFFECTIVE THAN IONIZATION SMOKE ALARM
- How does Photoelectric Smoke alarm works?
- Inside the smoke alarm, there is a LED light that sends a beam of light (similar to a laser pointer) in a separate compartment inside the chamber, there is a photosensor that detects light.
- As smoke enters the detector, the smoke particles interrupt the light beam, scattering it in many directions. Some of the LED light scatters toward the light sensor. When light beams hit the sensor, the alarm will go off!
- When the batteries in your smoke alarm get low, the smoke alarm automatically activates a low battery chirping sound different from the alarm sound so you know it's time to get new batteries.
- Photoelectric sensors are set off when smoke enters the alarm and deflects the light of an LED beam onto a photocell.
- For slow, smoky, smoldering fires, photoelectric alarms are far more sensitive and effective.
- Choose a photoelectric model as our primary choice, killing the fire at the begining.
Installation Notes:
1. Turn the alarm body counterclockwise and take off the bracket.
2. Hold the bracket in the installation position as specified in the Recommended Locations, mark installation holes of the bracket with a pencil.
3. Drill the two marked installation holes with a 3/16 inch (5mm) drill bit. Tap the two plastic grommets into holes with a hammer.
4. Mount the bracket to the ceiling by inserting and tightening the supplied screws into plastic grommets.
5. Connect the battery to the power connector.
6. Fix the battery into the battery box.
7. Fit the alarm on the bracket and turn the alarm body clockwise, until fully inserted into the bracket.

Answer: | Hello Bob, it's the Alorva team here. We do not provide moisture reduction packets, however, if you feel you need that added protection from moisture, feel free to do so. Some customers are constantly adding and taking out documents from their bags all the time and this airflow that is introduced is sufficient to keep moisture to non-existent levels. Thanks and have a Merry Xmas, The Alorva team. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this the unit that was recalled for not detecting smoke |
Answer: | so after fighting with it, i believe the answer might be smoke alarms? the octagonal shape with sides that are parallel to the battery case appear to fit into smoke alarms while the hexagonal (also on Energizer) do not. particularly First Alert/Intertek model SC9120B |
Question: | how long do the batteries last |
Answer: | Duracell components and batteries are produced at several locations in the U.S. and abroad, including Europe and China. If you have additional questions please contact our Customer Relations team at 800-551-2355 between the hours of 9am and 6pm EST. |
Question: | Why can't this be shipped to area code |
Answer: | Usually a 2 year lifespan from the date of manufacture. I have always had good luck with Duracell lasting the longest, more than the bunny claims! |
Question: | does it have a siliene button |
Answer: | It's the date usually found on the btry. On my last purchase of Duracell 9v coppertop btry's MAR 2015 is printed on the btry. The package, while it has no good to date on it says it is guaranteed fresh for 5 years. On this packaging you can not see a good to date on it until you open it and look at the btry. Therefore since it is gtd for 5 years I believe the manufacture date was 2010. Using a top rated btry like Duracell we change smoke alarm btrys every 2 years contrary to the suggested 1 year time frame of replacement. We also check the alarm function every month. We also use these 9v btry's in our garage door openers. Hope this answers your question. LR |
