9 best kitchen fire extinguishers
Kitchen fire extinguishers are specialized fire safety tools designed for use in kitchens, where the risk of fires involving cooking oils, grease, and other flammable materials is relatively high. These fire extinguishers are essential components of kitchen safety and can help prevent small fires from escalating into more significant disasters. Here's what you need to know about kitchen fire extinguishers:
Type of Fire Extinguisher: Kitchen fire extinguishers are typically classified as Class K fire extinguishers. They are designed specifically to combat fires involving cooking oils, fats, and greases that are common in kitchens. These extinguishers use a wet chemical agent to smother and cool the fire, effectively extinguishing it.
Fire Classifications: Fire extinguishers are categorized into different classes based on the types of fires they can combat. In addition to Class K for kitchen fires, there are other classes like Class A (ordinary combustibles like wood and paper) and Class B (flammable liquids). It's important to have the right type of extinguisher for the potential fire hazards in your kitchen.
Size and Placement: Kitchen fire extinguishers are typically smaller in size compared to traditional fire extinguishers, making them easier to handle and store in kitchen spaces. They should be strategically placed within easy reach, preferably near cooking appliances like stoves and ovens. Mounting them on the wall or under cabinets is a common practice.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure that kitchen fire extinguishers are in working condition when needed. Check the pressure gauge regularly to ensure it is in the green zone, indicating adequate pressure. Additionally, inspect the extinguisher for any visible signs of damage or wear.
Usage Instructions: Familiarize yourself and your household with the proper usage of the kitchen fire extinguisher. Instructions for use are typically printed on the extinguisher's label. Remember to aim at the base of the fire, squeeze the handle, sweep from side to side, and keep a safe distance.
Training: It's a good idea to provide basic fire safety training to everyone in the household. Training should include how to use the fire extinguisher, how to safely exit the kitchen in case of a fire, and when to call emergency services.
Expiration Date: Kitchen fire extinguishers have a limited lifespan and should be replaced or recharged as indicated on their labels. They may also need replacement after use.
Local Regulations: Be aware of any local regulations or building codes regarding the installation and maintenance of fire extinguishers in kitchens. Compliance with these regulations is essential for safety.
In summary, kitchen fire extinguishers, specifically Class K extinguishers, are critical tools for addressing cooking-related fires in kitchens. Proper placement, maintenance, and training are essential to ensure their effectiveness in the event of a fire emergency. Kitchen fire extinguishers are an important component of overall fire safety measures in homes and commercial kitchens.

Product description
The First Alert SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm features dual sensors to detect both smoke and carbon monoxide in a single device. A photoelectric sensor detects the smoke most often produced by smoldering fires, and minimizes false alarms from cooking smoke or shower steam. Additionally, the advanced electrochemical CO sensor detects carbon monoxide leaks from multiple sources, such as faulty fuel burning appliances, blocked chimneys, and generators running inside or too close to homes. A loud, 85 decibel siren alerts you to the threat; unique alarm sounds and indicator lights on its face distinguish a smoke warning from a carbon monoxide warning. This carbon monoxide and smoke detector is battery operated, so you don't need an electrician for installation. Requiring just two AA batteries and featuring an easy access battery compartment for quick changes, this smoke and carbon monoxide detector has a single button that allows you to silence a false alarm or test the unit.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.
The First Alert SCO5CN carbon monoxide and smoke alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. The alarm uses photoelectric smoke sensing technology which is environmentally friendlier and which reduces nuisance alarms, making it ideal for cooking areas. It is also great for sensing slow smoldering fires quickly. The permanent sensors last the lifetime of the alarm. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. A low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. Not available for sale in Massachusetts.--Bree Norlander

User questions & answers
Question: | pack is $30, 2 pack is $90. Why is a two pack so much? I thought the idea was to incentivize more product at a lower cost. This is halarious |
Answer: | I no longer live in the apartment where I replaced the old smoke alarm, but you will love this one. It's so nice to flip the battery holder down and not have to remove the battery from the unit. |
Question: | Advice on false alarms? Goes off every week or so. It's in our kitchen/living room, but goes off even when we are not cooking. Goes 1 min then stops |
Answer: | No |
Question: | I have these througout my house and rental unit. Installed them about 7 years ago and many malfunctioning. Any durability mprovments since 7 yrs ago |
Answer: | The instructions that come with the unit duplicate what I have read from several Fire Department sources: you can place your unit on the ceiling, but AT LEAST 4 inches (10cm) from the wall. If you want to mount it on the wall, mount it MORE THAN 4 inches (10cm) BELOW the ceiling, but NO LOWER than12 inches (30cm) below the ceiling. It has to be high enough up the wall to "smell" the smoke, but that 4 x 4 inch (10cm x 10cm) area where the wall meets the ceiling can sometimes harbor a "dead zone" of still air where the smoke would NOT reach the detector quickly enough during a fire to warn you in time. Thus, do NOT mount your detectors too close to where the wall meets the ceiling. |
Question: | How long do batteries last |
Answer: | Ionization type. I actually looked at at manual to be certain. |
