9 best sump pump solutions

Sump pump solutions refer to various strategies and products designed to address issues related to sump pumps, which are essential devices used to prevent flooding and water damage in basements and crawlspaces. Here is an overview of common sump pump solutions:

  1. Sump Pump Installation: Proper installation of a sump pump is crucial for its effectiveness. It involves digging a sump pit in the lowest part of your basement or crawlspace, placing the sump pump inside the pit, and connecting it to a discharge pipe that directs water away from your home's foundation.

  2. Backup Sump Pumps: Backup sump pump systems provide an extra layer of protection in case the primary sump pump fails due to power outages or mechanical issues. These backups can be battery-powered, water-powered, or use other alternative power sources to ensure continuous operation.

  3. Sump Pump Alarms: Sump pump alarms are devices that alert homeowners when the water level in the sump pit becomes too high or when there is a malfunction with the pump. These alarms help you address issues promptly, preventing potential flooding.

  4. Sump Pump Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep your sump pump in good working condition. This includes cleaning the sump pit, testing the pump, and ensuring that the float switch moves freely. Maintenance can help prevent clogs and extend the lifespan of the pump.

  5. Sump Pump Check Valves: Check valves are installed on the discharge pipe to prevent water from flowing back into the sump pit after the pump has turned off. This ensures that the pump doesn't cycle unnecessarily and helps maintain its efficiency.

  6. Sump Pump Basins and Covers: Sump pump basins and covers are designed to protect the sump pump from debris, dirt, and contaminants that can clog the pump or impede its operation. They also help reduce odors and prevent moisture from escaping into your living space.

  7. Water Alarm Systems: In addition to sump pump alarms, water alarm systems can be installed in areas prone to water leaks or flooding. These alarms can detect water accumulation and trigger alerts to notify you of potential issues.

  8. Sump Pump Discharge Extensions: Properly directing water away from your home's foundation is crucial. Sump pump discharge extensions, often made of PVC or corrugated tubing, help channel water safely away from your property to prevent re-entry.

  9. Professional Inspection and Servicing: It's advisable to have your sump pump system inspected and serviced by a professional plumber or technician periodically. They can identify potential problems and ensure that your sump pump is functioning optimally.

  10. Sump Pump Replacement: If your sump pump is old, unreliable, or frequently experiencing issues, it may be time for a replacement. Upgrading to a newer, more efficient sump pump model can provide better protection against flooding.

The specific sump pump solutions you need may vary depending on your location, the severity of water issues, and the type of sump pump you have. Regular maintenance and vigilance are key to ensuring that your sump pump effectively protects your home from water damage.

Basepump HB1000-PRO Premium High Volume Water Powered Backup Sump Pump with Water Alarm

Basepump

Based on 37 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Basepump HB1000-PRO, including battery powered high water ALARM. This is the water powered backup sump pump system using no battery and no charger to plug in or maintain. It is the solution to the problem of sump pump failure when water inflows are above average. Basepump has always been in a class by itself with its unique features such as being mounted on the ceiling, high above the sump. For this reason, it consistently removes more water per hour. The hydraulic float system makes it possible for Basepump to empty the sump to the bottom each time it runs. The PRO series is the result of homeowner feedback saying they want the higher capacity pumping of the HB1000 as well as back-flow prevention and simple installation. The included brass plumbing parts and dual check valve at a reasonable price answers this need. Make sure you can fill a 5 gallon bucket at your outside hose spigot, without the hose, in less than 30 seconds for this pump, so you know you have enough water flow to feed it properly. When testing your water supply, if you have a water softener, filter, or frost-proof spigot, the test will be inaccurate. Please call 800 554 1426 before ordering if you have any questions. Additionally, you may see that Amazon offers installation for what appears to be a reasonable price. Keep in mind that a basic installation is about a three hour job in most cases so consider that accordingly when obtaining bids from contractors.

  • Highest pumping rates in the industry
  • Dual check valve backflow preventer included
  • No battery to maintain; No charger; No electricity
  • Includes battery powered high water ALARM
  • Brass shutoff valve and No-sweat push-in pipe fittings included. Works with Radon Sealed systems.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the difference between the regular hb-1000 and the pro
Answer: No. They will just put the pump in and connect to nearby pipe. But if other connections or copper piping is needed or if they need to break drywall to access then that will all be extra.
Question: Does the expert installation include running a new copper pipe from city water
Answer: There are a number of factors that go into this answer. The pressure is only one of them. The piping and any restrictions will affect the rates. The height of the pumping lift as well as the distance to the exterior. 40 Lbs. PSI is at the low end of the range for this model and unless you have the proper flow rate of water, it may not pump anything. We recommend testing the system before purchasing. This link shows you how: https://basepump.com/index.php/assets/Uploads/documents/Basepump/Residential-Easy-3-step-test-2016-05.pdf If Amazon blocks the link, go to the Basepump web site and find it on the Basepump page.
Question: What is the gpm rating for the pump at 40 psi water pressure
Answer: This pump is a fantastic pump designed to be a back-up pump. Depending on your needs and the volume of water, it may work as your primary pump. The difference is this pump can pump 1,100 GPH, while the high quality professional pumps I use as my primary pumps can do about 5,500 GPH.
Question: why cant you use this to replace a sump pump all together
Answer: No it is not adjustable. It’s slightly small for me being 6” tall but I still manage to do my leg workout

Pump Sentry 822 PS- Emergency Power for Sump Pumps by Sec America

SEC America

Based on 161 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Here's How Pump Sentry Works Battery Back Up For Sump Pumps 1200 Watt Capacity 822PS Pump Sentry interfaces between a pump and its AC wall outlet. When AC utility power is present, the 822PS charges a battery and monitors the wall outlet to detect a power outage. At the moment utility power fails, the 822PS draws energy from a battery and converts it to enable pump operation. When utility power returns, the 822PS automatically switches the pump back to AC wall outlet power. At the same time, the 822PS resumes charging the battery to return it to full capacity in preparation for the next power failure. Pump Sentry interfaces between a pump and the AC electrical supply. When electricity is available, Pump Sentry charges a battery and monitors the power line to detect a power outage. At the instant that power failure occurs, Pump Sentry draws the energy stored in the battery and converts it to AC power. This AC power is automatically channeled to the pump to maintain its operation in the absence of electricity. When AC utility power is restored, the Pump Sentry reinstates AC utility power as the prime energy source to operate the pump. Simultaneously and automatically Pump Sentry commences the recharging of the battery, to return it to full capacity in preparation for the next power failure. Designed to operate most 1/2 Hp sump pumps.

User questions & answers

Question: Are these sturdy, good quality
Answer: Yes. I am pleased with these products (battery + inverter/charger)
Question: Does the addition of another battery meaning 2 in total double the run time during an outage
Answer: Yes in theory but also depends on quality and age of the batteries your using plus how much your sump pump(s) has to run.
Question: Can you connect more than one battery for longer run time
Answer: If Amazon allow me to post the link here, the brochure tells you can connect several batteries. http://www.secamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/Pump_Sentry_2014_Brochure.pdf
Question: Can you use this model with a 1/2 HP pump
Answer: I called the manufacturer about using the 1/2 horsepower Wayne Sump I have with the 822 PS and they stated that the 822 PS could blow the fuse in the 822 PS due to it being 9 watts. I decided to buy the 1622 PS to be safe since if a fuse blew it would shut it down, so check with the company to be sure your sump pump will work properly.

Brass shutoff valve so the water to the unit can be shut off easily, if necessary. Brass Push-fit Male adapter so all you do is push in the pipe to connect to the pump. Brass Push-fit Tee to connect into your existing water supply.Since all these items are needed in nearly every installation and they would cost the same or more to get them all locally, the PRO is the best value, as long as the dual check valve is accepted in your local plumbing jurisdiction. If not, and you need a different type of back-flow prevention device, then get the standard model and the correct back-flow device separately.

User questions & answers

Question: Am I able to plug a diffrent sump pump into this system I have a 1.5 hp 10000gph sump pump 110v will this be able to handle that for a couple hours
Answer: You can plug in any 120V pump, as long as the motor rating is less than 15 amps.
Question: Can you opt-out of the remote testing they push through every 48 hours
Answer: The system self tests are not pushed to the units. The hardware initiates the self test and sends the data to PumpSpy. Even if the device is not connected to the internet, the system will still perform the self tests.
Question: This question is for the manufacturer. If my power goes out and WiFi goes out, how do you alert me of my pump status
Answer: "On Nov 5, 2019, at 11:27 AM, PumpSpy Tech Support wrote: "Hello, "If you don't want to upgrade, your current cellular service that relies on Verizon will reportedly continue until 12/31/2020." Greetings, Thanks for the prompt reply. PumpSpy: "Beyond that date, WiFi is the only service we can support." The only service you can support or the only service you plan to support? I believe PumpSpy is making a business crippling move to only have WiFi as an option. Does your internet stay operative during a major storm power outage? Ours does NOT! Cellular towers are much more likely to have power backups than ISP nodes. ISPs also vary widely in the speed and quality of their internet. Where I live 5G will probably put Frontier Communications out of the internet business with their abysmal 6-12 mbps speed. Wave Broadband, where available, has gig internet but it goes down during major power outages when PumpSpy is most needed. Cell coverage and my PumpSpy monitoring has stayed effective during these storms. My advice to PumpSpy is to start working on a 5G upgrade. Having only WiFi as an option is NOT an option for my multiple properties. PumpSpy: "We are offering customers an option to do a WiFi upgrade now and extend their product warranty. If you convert now before the end of this year we will add 5 years to your warranty. If you wait until 2020 we will only extend it for 3 years. "Regarding upgrading, there are 2 upgrade choices: "PumpSpy PS2000UG WiFi Upgrade for Cellular PumpSpy System PS1000 for $249 ( https://www.amazon.com/PumpSpy-PS2000UG-Upgrade-Cellular-System/dp/B07YSWGFW3/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?keywords=pumpspy+ps+2000+upgrade&qid=1572972309&sr=8-2-fkmr0). "PumpSpy PS2000UG WiFi Upgrade for Cellular PumpSpy System PS1000 (Controller ONLY) FOR $184 ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08124S1S2/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?keywords=pumpspy+ps+2000+upgrade&qid=1572967878&sr=8-1-fkmr0). "We recommend the upgrade with the UPS battery backup for your WiFi modem if you don't already own one, to keep your PumpSpy connected in a power outage." WiFi will NOT keep my PumpSpy connected during a storm created power outage. You are turning PumpSpy into a circuit breaker and pump health and activity monitor. Disappointed
Question: Does the backup pump test cycle even if the sump well is dry? If so, isn’t that bad for the pump
Answer: The backup pump is designed to run for short periods of time in a dry situation.

User questions & answers

Question: can I use this with RO water
Answer: Hi Wayne,The thermoplastic pump will work better in this application than a cast iron one. There is an aluminum motor plate that is exposed and this could oxidize in an RO environment. We do not recommend our pumps to be used for these. Thanks
Question: Can this be used as a utility pump
Answer: Sure It's more powerful than a standard utility pump and would require an adapter to neck it down from 1-1/2/1-1/4" to 3 /4" garden hose thread but it will work provided there isn't much of sand in the water should only be used with clear water and would have to manually activate float switch by hand if the water is not deep enough to activate float In addition, this pump will only pickup water approximately 1" off floor whereas a utility pump can typically pickup down to 1 /4" , or le ss, off floor This pump should not be fun dry - water must be in intake at all times when running
Question: What size basin will this fit in
Answer: If you secure it so that vibration does not move it around, it should work fine in a 12" diameter basin. I have it in a larger one (15"). If the float touches the side, you are obviously in trouble.
Question: Title says "with vertical float switch" while the description says "can be used as a sump pump by adding an optional float switch". Which is it
Answer: It was confusing to me as well. However my purchase had the vertical float in the box. I had to attach it though. No big task
