12 best combination sump pump

A combination sump pump is a type of water pump commonly used in residential and commercial buildings to prevent flooding and water damage. It is typically associated with the Sump Pumps category in the Water Pumps Parts Accessories section of the Rough Plumbing department in home improvement stores. Here's what you need to know about combination sump pumps:

  1. Purpose: The primary purpose of a combination sump pump is to remove excess water from a pit or sump basin in a basement or crawl space. This is done to prevent flooding and water damage in areas susceptible to water buildup, especially during heavy rainfall or melting snow.

  2. Two Types: A combination sump pump typically includes two types of pumps: a primary sump pump and a backup sump pump.

    • Primary Sump Pump: This pump is the main workhorse and operates regularly to remove water from the sump pit.

    • Backup Sump Pump: The backup pump is designed to kick in when the primary pump fails or when there's a power outage. It provides an extra layer of protection, ensuring that the sump pit doesn't overflow in critical situations.

  3. Power Sources: Combination sump pumps are designed to be reliable in emergency situations. They often have multiple power sources, such as electricity (for the primary pump) and a battery or water pressure (for the backup pump). This ensures that the system remains operational even during power outages.

  4. Automatic Operation: Most combination sump pumps are equipped with float switches that automatically activate the pumps when the water level in the sump pit rises to a certain point. This automation ensures that the pumps start working without human intervention.

  5. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep combination sump pumps in good working condition. This includes cleaning debris from the pit, testing the pumps periodically, and ensuring that the backup power source (e.g., the battery) is in good condition.

  6. Installation: Combination sump pumps are typically installed in a sump pit, which is a hole dug in the basement floor. The pumps are connected to a discharge pipe that directs the water away from the building.

  7. Benefits: Combination sump pumps offer an extra layer of protection against flooding and water damage, which can be costly and destructive. They provide peace of mind, especially in areas prone to heavy rain or potential power outages.

  8. Choosing the Right Pump: When selecting a combination sump pump, it's important to consider factors such as the size of the sump pit, the power source, and the type of backup system. Proper sizing and installation are critical for effective flood prevention.

In summary, a combination sump pump is an essential component of a water management system in properties at risk of flooding. It offers a dual-pump system with primary and backup pumps, ensuring reliable operation even during power outages or primary pump failures. Proper maintenance and installation are crucial to its effectiveness.

User questions & answers

Question: does this pump come with a battery
Answer: The pump does not come with a battery.
Question: Can anyone please recommend a battery to purchase for this unit
Answer: Make sure you get a size 27 deep cycle marine/rv battery, but pay the extra money for an AGM type. I bought the standard one for $81 at Sam’s Club, and it worked fine at first, but it died in 2 years because I did not check and maintain the water levels. After much research I realize that I should have paid the $159 price for the AGM version (maintenance free), and all would be well. I also got into the habit of unplugging the regular pump and dumping a 5 gallon bucket of water down to trigger and exercise the backup system fully.
Question: What size pvc pipe goes into the single fitting at the top of the unit, and what method are you using to attach it? Thanks
Answer: I glued a three-foot section of 1-1/2" PVD pipe to the wye-fitting at the top of the pump assemble. At the top of the three-foot section I used an 1-1/2" Fernco rubber coupler with stainless steel clamps to connect it to the drain line. You're going to love this pump. It's the quietest pump I've ever heard.
Question: Is it ok to connect to the primary pumps PVC before the check valve, eliminating the need for 2 check valves
Answer: No, you need a check valve for each pump. This happened to my sump pump installation: Over time, the flapper (acts like the valve) in the check valve deformed a little, detached from its hinge point(s), and ended up in the FRONT part of the body. This meant that when water was being pumped out of the sump, the water forced the flapper into the check valve opening... BLOCKING the flow! The check valve ended up working backwards, basically. With the water unable to flow, after enough time, the sump pump burned itself out. If two pumps are feeding through just one check valve, the same thing could happen to both pumps. Each pump needs its own check valve. It's OK for the discharge lines to merge afterwards. BTW: If you really depend of a reliable sump pump installation, spend the extra $30-$50 bucks and get a couple of industrial-strength check valves (regardless if you have a single or double-pump system). They will be "out of sight and out of mind" parts of your installation; you need to KNOW that they'll last!

User questions & answers

Question: Is this unit quiet? IE can it be heard running when mounted in a cabinet on a rubber pad
Answer: I have it in a cabinet on a cement floor in my basement. I can hear it run while when it pumps the laundry water. When the dryer is running at the same time it is louder than when the pump runs for the washer.
Question: Does this pump have to Be connect to the vent pipe
Answer: most codes require it to be connected since these pumps are almost always located in the basement . most codes will allow the vent be run through the basement wall , not located within 10 feet of a window , you can also use a automatic vent unit , sized 11/2 or 2 inch . pulls air from room pump is located in .
Question: Can I reduce the 1 1/2" discharge down to 3/4' or 1/2" to run through a pex line? Or will that create too much back pressure for the pump
Answer: This could restrict the discharge ¾” but that would really restrict your flow. If you call us we can go over the application to make sure that the pump would work in your application. - Franklin Electric/Wastewater/Little Giant: 1-800-701-7894
Question: Can I reduce this down to 1" and push gray water out to my yard. There is maybe a 2' lift at that most
Answer: You can reduce it to 1" if needed as long as the run is not longer, because the pump will have to push that much harder.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this pump be used solely as a backup
Answer: Yes
Question: How wide the pit has to be for this
Answer: The measurements for this system are 8-3/4"L x 10 3/4"W x 17-3/4"H. Its very compact and should fit in most sump basins. For further information please contact our service team at 800-991-0466 option 3.
Question: can a sealed AGM battery be used with the basement watchdog backup
Answer: This DFK961 model system will work with a AGM/Maintenance free type battery. I would suggest making sure it has at least 75 Amp hours or higher. Be sure to connect the fluid sensor probe to the + (positive) post on the battery to disable the low fluid alarm. For further information I would suggest calling our service team at 800-991-0466 option 3.
Question: Does this kit come with the battery housing? I know that you have to purchase the battery & acid separate, but wondering what else I have to buy
Answer: No, this kit doesn't come with the battery housing (assuming you mean a 'box' to house the battery), but you don't need to buy anything else. For clarity you need this kit, and I can attest to how good and effective it is, well-constructed and very reliable, you then need the battery and the acid. Beware of a few things; the acid is not quite as life and death as it makes out, just take your time. Also the import duty is hefty for both the pump and the battery, but overall well worth the money and peace of mind. Finally don't pick the pump up by the floatation device, it is very tempting, and when you get it you'll see what I mean but you need to use the handle. Hope you enjoy.

User questions & answers

Question: Will the zoeller 508-0006 unit fit in a 12 inch diameter pit
Answer: At it's widest point, the assembly measures 10" according to the drawings on the Zoeller site.
Question: My sump pit is 14 1/2 inches in diameter. Will this fit
Answer: It will not fit because the unit is a little over 15" with both pumps put on, so you will need at least a 16" crock for the float to move freely inside. We have a 14 1/2 inch crock and bought this because the answers stated that it would fit, when it, in fact, does not. The unit itself is very nicely made - no plastic pieces on it, it's made of cast iron. Just wanted people to be aware of the measurements.
Question: With the Zoeller will the check valve bang like my current system does when it shuts off
Answer: The one I installed doesn't slam or bang. If your standing over it when it runs you can when it shuts off but it not noisy.
Question: Pumps
Answer: Yes, 2 pumps- a main one and then the back up. Back up gets triggered with a higher float and runs off the battery back up. If power fails, the back up pump takes over

User questions & answers

Question: Can you enter multiple email accounts and mobil phone numbers
Answer: Yes you can enter multiple phone numbers and email addresses.
Question: Can multiple pump spies be installed on a multi pump system
Answer: Yes. You can have as many Smart Outlets as you have sump pumps. You can give each Smart Outlet a nickname (furnace room, main pump, etc.) to tell them apart in the PumpSpy app.
Question: what is the cost of the monitoring service
Answer: Zero. "Free Monitoring Included"
Question: What happenes if the main power goes out how does this send alerts
Answer: Here is what would happen in 2 similar scenarios: If the power goes out and your WiFi network is still active (UPS backup on router OR the power is only partially out, tripped breaker), the Smart Outlet stores enough power on the board to send data for several seconds. In this scenario, you would receive an AC power failure alert. If the power is completely out, the Smart Outlet would try to send the AC power failure alert, but your internet connection would be down. In this scenario, you would receive an alert that your Smart Outlet has lost communication with the PumpSpy Monitoring Service. If your Smart Outlet doesn't "check in" for over 2 minutes, this alert will be sent. The outlet does not communicate directly with the homeowner, the Smart Outlet sends all data and communications to PumpSpy's Remote Monitoring computers, which process incoming data and send alerts as required. Hope that answers your question!

User questions & answers

Question: I got this hooked up and activated the float to test. The pump activated, but when I lowered the float it kept running. Is the controller defective
Answer: When the float switch for the backup pump is activated, he pump will run on a timer which is usually around 25-30 seconds. I would recommend testing it again and give it at least a minute to shut off. For further information contact our service team at 800-991-0466 option 3.
Question: Can this run semi-continuous while connected to AC power when main pump fails? Wayne controller had burning smell while charging and running
Answer: The unit has its' own floats, so the pump will run when the water level raises the float, so it depends on where you place the backup pump float. Place it above the main unit float so if the water level continues to rise due to a failed main pump, the backup pump will kick-in.
Question: If my main pump fails will the back up kick in
Answer: That will only happen if you have the battery back-up unit in Working order. It is designed to kick in when the power fails or if the power has been out and the float switch on the main unit is activated and then the battery unit takes over. You need to consult the owner's manual for the exact info.
Question: battery run time
Answer: It really would depend on the type of battery ,marine battery deep cycle works best. and the amount of water entering your basement . From a few hours to all day

User questions & answers

Question: Can this pump be hooked up to a battery backup
Answer: It pulls too much current for most battery backups, a generator will run it fine.
Question: how long is the power cord
Answer: Just received my Wayne CDU980E. I, too, was concerned with this question. Power cord measures about 90-inches (7.5-feet) from where it connects to the top of the sump motor (which is about 11-inches above the bottom of the pump). I can't find this marked on Wayne's literature for the CDU980E.
Question: When the pump is switched on by the floater, how long does it run
Answer: If there is merely water in the sump pit, you don't need this powerful a pump. This 3/4 HP pump is for handling major water flowing into the pit. When that happens in our cellar, the pump runs until it out-runs the flow of incoming water.-- sometimes for minutes sometimes for hours. We have 4 sump installations in 4 buildings. When the water table (level of the ground water in the outside ground) is high, three of these systems pump a lot of the time and pretty constantly. We have 2 pumps in each pit so if one fails we do not get flooded. Each Pump (if more than one in the system) needs to have a check valve/ back-flow preventer so it will force the other pumps to actually pump the water up and out and not allow an operating pump to to just pump back out through the other , (not then pumping) pump. The should also be placed at different levels so they don't necessariy go on at the same time, thus reserving one as a kind of back up. Of course, if there is really a lot of incoming water -- which we had when we first bought our house, it takes both pumps to handle the in flow and avoid flooding. NOw that we use the large diameter PVC piping, it works so much better that a single pump pof this size would probably be fine. It is best to pipe the pumps with real PVC pipe and in 1 1/2" or 2" size. This will increase the flow rate by around twice as much flow as the skinny (1 1/4") highresistance black curly-sided plastic pipe they often come with. Good luck and stay dry.
Question: when you say 'top suction' does this mean the pu,p must be totally submerged
Answer: The pump draws water from the "LOWER" part of the pump a few inches off the floor. It does not have to be completely submerged to draw water. When the bulb float rises enough to turn on the float switch it sucks water. It turns on before the water reaches the top of the pump. I use this one and I know. Hope this helps someone.
