13 best residential water pressure regulator
A residential water pressure regulator is a crucial component of a plumbing system that helps maintain consistent and safe water pressure within a home. It is commonly installed near the main water supply line to ensure that the pressure from the municipal water supply or well does not exceed safe levels. Here are some key points about residential water pressure regulators:
Function: The primary function of a water pressure regulator is to reduce the high-pressure water from the main supply to a lower, more manageable pressure suitable for household use. This helps protect plumbing fixtures, appliances, and pipes from damage caused by excessive water pressure.
Pressure Adjustment: Most residential water pressure regulators are adjustable, allowing homeowners or plumbers to set the desired pressure level. The typical recommended pressure for residential use is around 50-60 psi (pounds per square inch).
Safety: Maintaining proper water pressure is essential for the safety of your plumbing system. High water pressure can lead to burst pipes, leaks, and damage to appliances, while low pressure can result in poor water flow and reduced efficiency of fixtures.
Installation: Water pressure regulators are typically installed near the main water supply entry point into a house. They can be installed horizontally or vertically, depending on the specific model and space available. Proper installation is essential to ensure the regulator functions correctly.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance is important to ensure the regulator continues to operate correctly. This may include checking for leaks, cleaning or replacing filters (if equipped), and verifying that the pressure setting remains within the desired range.
Materials: Water pressure regulators are commonly made of brass or other corrosion-resistant materials to ensure durability and longevity.
Pressure Relief Valve: Some regulators include a built-in pressure relief valve to prevent damage in case of a sudden increase in pressure. This safety feature helps protect the plumbing system.
Pressure Gauges: Some models have pressure gauges that allow homeowners to monitor the current water pressure and make adjustments as needed.
Cost: The cost of a residential water pressure regulator can vary depending on its features and quality. It is a relatively affordable investment compared to potential plumbing repairs caused by high water pressure.
In summary, a residential water pressure regulator is an essential component of a plumbing system that helps maintain safe and consistent water pressure throughout a home.Proper installation and regular maintenance are crucial to ensuring its effectiveness and the longevity of your plumbing system.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this one repairable? Our pressure regulator fails every 3 years. The plumber says it's because our water is acidic and it eats them up |
Answer: | It is repairable with a kit but would be cost effective to replace rather than repair which is how most everything is now a days. |
Question: | What's pressure setting range from? is a lead free |
Answer: | Lead Free* contains a weighted average lead content less than 0.25% for wetted surfaces , setting range: where the desired pressure reduction is more than a 4 to 1 ratio (i.e. 200psi to 50psi), multiple regulators in series should be installed. Minimum pressure in: 80psi |
Question: | can it use in the hot water systems |
Answer: | This should be used on the water coming into your house to reduce the pressure from the city to something that your house and its fixtures can handle. The city supply is >100psi, and you want to reduce that to around 60psi so you don't damage your pipes/fixtures. Mine is right before my gas water heater. |
Question: | Is this valve a double union |
Answer: | I just received mine, Nov 1, 2017. It has a union on each end. The inlet at the body is also threaded, so you can use both unions or one union or neither. I replaced a Wilkins model 70 which had worked well for 30 years. The Wilkins 70 had a union at the inlet and the discharge pipe threaded right into the Wilkins. This regulator is the same size as the Wilkins model 70 but about an inch longer if you install both unions. Since my piping has some slack, I installed both unions, but I could have used one union and screwed the discharge onto my exiting piping to make it the same length as the Wilkins. My water hammer and pressure surges are now gone. I looked at rebuilding the Wilkins, which isn't difficult and restores it to new condition, but a rebuild kit costs more than a new regulator. Moving production to China undoubtedly increased profits for the manufacturer since they no longer pay taxes, but the move tripled the price of rebuild kits so now it's cheaper to replace tan rebuild. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this replace a 3/4" wilkins 600 non-XL? Is it the same dimensions |
Answer: | Yes, 600 model valve is discontinued by 600XL, as a new model, dimensions are just the same, if you have an e-mail I can send both specs. |
Question: | Can this be mounted in any position |
Answer: | We mount ours vertical or horizontal (bell housing for spring on top). Always follow water flow direction. |
Question: | What's the set pin made from? I'd like to install mine in a box out at the by the meter so corrosion is a concern |
Answer: | If by "set pin" you mean the bolt used to set the pressure then yes corrosion is a concern. The bolt & nut are made of steel. If kept dry they are no problem. In a box corrosion is much more likely. You have two options: 1. grease it up real well or 2. go to a boat store and get a brass or stainless steel bolt & nut. |
Question: | It is included union nuts and gasket |
Answer: | Mine did not. So, if some people are receiving unions, shouldn't everyone else if everyone is paying the same price? Where do I find a union for this? |

User questions & answers
Question: | Which adapter do I use for the shower arm water pressure |
Answer: | It’s the black adapter with the ridged edge and the only one with threads in the inside. Screw that on your shower arm and the pressure gauge screws over the outer threads. |
Question: | Can this be used to measure the peak water pressure or does it only tell you the current pressure |
Answer: | There is no flow through, it essentially a cap/plug for a water discharge port, that has a gauge on it to read the pressure. I did noticed that it worked best if I changed the pressure on the line to, disconnect the gauge and reconnect. Could have just been me as well. |
Question: | Is this product designed for continuous use? i’m looking to install this in my rv fresh water system. i’m curious about psi drop after 3 filters |
Answer: | Can’t see why not, should work ok for that |
Question: | Can this be used on hot water |
Answer: | I have not used it with hot water. Still, it should work fine since there would be no flow of water going through it. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this one be rebuilt if needed |
Answer: | U can disassemble I have no idea if parts are available. |
Question: | can oil leak into water system |
Answer: | No. The oil is in a closed system around the dial. I have never had any oil leakage. This is a fantastic regulator. Love it |
Question: | Does this have an adjustable regulator on it |
Answer: | On top of the black portion, there is a single slot for a screw driver. Also, a pair of arrows indicating the direction to turn the screw to either increase or decrease the pressure through the regulator. I have found that it works well even though it hasn't been put through a season of use. I am using it in my greenhouse to modify the water pressure in the expandable hose used there. I have a constant pressure pump on my well set at 75 psi and have burst many expandable hoses. |
Question: | Hooking this up to my low pressure system in my garden. Will this last for constant use |
Answer: | My wife and I bought a couple of acres in Louisiana 5 years ago and set up a Travel Trailer to live in full time. We bought this regulator early in 2017 to bring the pressure down from 86 psi to 48 psi. you wouldn't believe the difference it makes. About every 6 months I've disconnected it to hook up to a test meter to see if anything has changed. It's right where I set it over two years ago. This is one fine piece of craftmanship. |

User questions & answers
Question: | after 5 years this has started to leak between inlet and outlet. is it repairable or just throw away |
Answer: | Have run a small campground for 50+ years. This type of regulator is highly susceptible to tiny sand or debris in the water lines. A fine screen filter helps but only minimally. Have flushed these in every which way trying to clean - not much luck. If any consolation, junk brass can bring up to $3.00 lb!! |
Question: | What size are the fittings? 1/2" or |
Answer: | Neither, they are the same size that will fit any outside faucet or garden hose. According the American National Standards Institute, garden hose thread--GHT--has an outside diameter of 1.0625 inches with 11.5 threads per inch. |
Question: | I live in an apartment and the pressure is often low when they're watering the lawns. What is minimum input pressure for 40 lb regulated output |
Answer: | Regulating your water won't help. You'd have to take that up with management about the sprinklers. The issue may be that they're using 1" or larger pvc pipe for the sprinklers which means there's a pressure drop because there's not enough water flow to support it. they could contact the water company to adjust the pressure regulator for the main water line which should support the demand for the sprinklers. |
Question: | Can this be used on a standard yard waterhose? Can the pressure be adjusted to a low and/or off level |
Answer: | Yes, standard water hose. No, pressure cannot be adjusted. You can add a shutoff valve before the pressure valve if you want to adjust the volume flow. |

Pressure Reducing Valves
Pressure Reducing Valves are designed to reduce incoming water or steam pressure to a safer constant predetermined downstream level. Depending on the type of valve, the downstream pressure is established by a pressure adjustment setting on the valve or by an external sensor.
Installed directly after the water meter in homes a water pressure reducing valve automatically reduces the pressure from the water supply main to a lower, more sensible pressure.
There are two types of water pressure reducing valves-- direct acting and pilot operated-- which use globe or angle style bodies.
Direct acting valves are the more popular water pressure reducing valves, consisting of globe-type bodies with a spring-loaded, heat-resistant diaphragm connected to the outlet of the valve that acts upon a spring. This spring holds a pre-set tension on the valve seat installed with a pressure equalizing mechanism for precise water pressure control.
Water Savings
Twice as much water flows through a system at 150psi pressure than at 50psi. Much of this additional water is wasted and not needed for normal usage.
Energy Savings
If less water flows through the system, less energy is needed to heat domestic hot water. Calculations show that pressure reducing valves can save as much as 30% on domestic water heating costs.
Wastewater Savings
When the community's wastewater treatment load is reduced, cost benefits accrue to both the environment and your bottom line. Many municipalities prorate sewer usage fees based upon the water meter reading.
Water Pressure Reducing Valves
Water Pressure Reducing Valves are used in residential, commercial, and institutional applications to reduce incoming water pressure to a lower predetermined level, thereby protecting downstream plumbing system components and reducing water consumption.
Steam Pressure Reducing Valves

Product description
Zurn Wilkins 1" Pressure Reducing Valve, Lead-Free, FNPT Union x FNPT (Only One Union is Included. If two unions are needed, Please order Zurn 1-NR3XLDU). Designed for installation on potable water lines to reduce high inlet pressure to a lower outlet pressure. The integral strainer makes this device most suitable for residential and commercial water systems that require frequent cleaning of sediment and debris. The direct acting integral by-pass design prevents buildup of excessive system pressure caused by thermal expansion. The balance piston design enables the regulator to react in a smooth and responsive manner to changes in system flow demand, while at the same time, providing protection from inlet pressure changes

User questions & answers
Question: | If is this is just replacing another one that is the same, does it screw in or does it have to be sweat in |
Answer: | I just watched a youtube video and it's actually very simple to replace it would be screwed on. The video is called how to replace a pressure regulator by the twin home experts. |
Question: | Hi. What is the pressure rating. i.e.. what pressure does it reduces from and to |
Answer: | The valve I carry reduce inlet pressure from 400 Psi to 15-75 psi. It is adjustable on the lower end. It is factory set at 50. I assume all of the items are identical but I can't assure that. |
Question: | will a pressure gauge screw in the bottom |
Answer: | No, you would have to install a tee on which ever side you want your gauge on. And you can then monitor the pressure. Thank you, The Plumbing Palace |
Question: | Do they have a repair/rebuilt kit for this model, nr3xl |
Answer: | They do. It's part number RK1-NR3XL (PRESSURE REDUCING VALVE REPAIR KIT) Complete Repair Kit for 1" Models NR3XL/NR3 - UPC: 612052074528. However you pay nearly as much as buying a new NR3XL-1". |

Zurn Pressure Reducing Valves
For over 100 years, we’ve zeroed in on water control, safety, and conservation. Our pressure reducing valves lower the municipal water supply pressure to cut down leaks, buildup and potential risks.
We hydrostatically test each valve against rigorous conditions and meet all approvals, including ASSE, IAPMO, and CSA. Our line covers the widest range of end connections, simplifies repairs and retrofits with easier access, and lasts thanks to its ultra-tough, corrosion-resistant, lead-free construction.
On average, residential and commercial customers save 30,000 to 40,000 gallons of water by reducing pressure from 100 PSI to 50 PSI.

Totally enclosed fan cooled motor, bearing to bearing, powered by a full-time run capacitor to eliminate starting wear vs regular motors. Thermal and overload protection. Large stainless steel corrosion-resistant body, easy to prime. Built for an intermittent or a continuous use. Easy to install, comes with 10-ft power cord. Maximum pressure of 65 PSI. 1" NPT suction and discharge. 0 - 100 PSI pressure gauge. Capacity at 30 PSI: 897 US GPH/5’; 749 US GPH/10’; 638 US GPH/15’; 555 US GPH/20’; 472 US GPH/25’. Not recommended for sand point applications. In a pressure boosting application, a water pressure regulator must be installed before the inlet of the pump if the source pressure exceeds 25 PSI.
User questions & answers
Question: | Pump will not kick on when facet is open |
Answer: | check and make sure your incoming pressure is not higher than the pumps high shutoff psi. If so it will not turn on. |
Question: | My cabin is strictly gravity flow from a 2000 gal holding tank about 150' above me. Can I use this to boost the pressure a bit |
Answer: | Yes. It'll probably boost pressure to about 75 PSI. But 150' head already gives you 73 psi so it may not be worth it unless you're losing a lot of pressure from flow loss in the pipes. In that case bigger pipes would be a better solution. |
Question: | Can this pump be used with an existing pressure tank? 2) Does anyone know how many watts this pump averages a day for a family of three |
Answer: | This BurCam water pump can be used with a holding tank to boost your city water pressure. When used as a booster, the incoming water pressure needs to be 20 PSI or less. If it is greater than 20 PSI, a pressure reducer will be required. This pump is designed to maintain a constant pressure and will automatically shut off once the line pressure reaches 60 PSI. The pump will pull 1,725 Watts at start up and 828 Watts while running. |
Question: | where can I get replacement parts for these pumps |
Answer: | call Burcam in Canada Tel. 514 337 4415 |
