14 best septic submersible pumps

Septic submersible pumps, also known as effluent pumps, are specialized water pumps used in septic systems to transport effluent (wastewater) from a septic tank to a drain field or other disposal area. These pumps are a crucial component of septic systems, ensuring that effluent is efficiently and safely distributed. Here's what you need to know about septic submersible pumps:

  1. Submersible Design: Septic submersible pumps are designed to be submerged in the septic tank or a pump chamber. This design allows them to operate effectively in a submerged environment and prevents exposure to air, which can lead to overheating and damage.

  2. Effluent Transport: These pumps are specifically engineered to handle effluent, which is the liquid wastewater that flows out of the septic tank. They are not designed to handle solid waste or sewage.

  3. Effluent Filtration: Some septic submersible pumps come equipped with filters or screens to prevent debris and solids from entering the pump and causing blockages or damage.

  4. Types of Septic Pumps: There are two main types of septic submersible pumps:

    • Sump Pumps: Some homeowners use sump pumps in their septic systems to move effluent. However, sump pumps are not designed exclusively for this purpose and may not be as durable as dedicated septic effluent pumps.
    • Dedicated Septic Pumps: These pumps are purpose-built for septic systems and are often more reliable and long-lasting. They are specifically designed to handle the effluent's characteristics.
  5. Performance Capacity: The capacity of septic submersible pumps varies depending on the size and needs of the septic system. It's important to select a pump that can handle the expected volume of effluent effectively.

  6. Automatic Operation: Many septic pumps are equipped with float switches or sensors that trigger the pump to turn on and off automatically based on the liquid level in the tank or pump chamber. This automation ensures efficient operation.

  7. Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to keep septic submersible pumps in good working condition. This may include periodic cleaning, checking for clogs or obstructions, and ensuring the float switches are functioning correctly.

  8. Installation: Proper installation is crucial for the effective operation of septic submersible pumps. They should be correctly positioned in the tank or pump chamber, and the discharge pipe should be routed to the drain field or other designated area.

  9. Safety Considerations: When working with septic submersible pumps, it's essential to follow safety guidelines and precautions. Avoid contact with wastewater and ensure electrical connections are secure and protected.

  10. Regulations: Local building codes and regulations may dictate specific requirements for septic systems, including the use of septic submersible pumps. It's important to comply with these regulations to ensure the proper functioning and environmental safety of the septic system.

In summary, septic submersible pumps, or effluent pumps, are critical components of septic systems, responsible for transporting wastewater from the septic tank to the designated disposal area.Proper selection, installation, and maintenance of these pumps are essential for the efficient and safe operation of septic systems.

User questions & answers

Question: What's the PSI or max head (pumping vertical height) of this pump
Answer: Length of hose for a sump pump is not nearly as important as lift. you can have a long horizontal run with only minor flow loss. Friction loss (the loss from hose length) at these low pressures is very small. The elevation (aka lift) is the true limiting factor. (PSI means pounds per square inch, FYI, the water pressure coming into your house from the main is about 50-80psi, someone wondered what psi meant). Based on the chart, this pump moves about 30 gallons per minute (gpm). If you lift ten feet the flow drops to about 20 gpm; at 20 feet of lift it's flowing about 10 gpm. I have used this with vinegar to flush my tankless water heater and I used it with about 50/50 mix of simple green and water in a 5 gallon bucket as a parts washer for motorcycle parts and the pump is fine. I do flush it with clean water when I am done.
Question: Does it have an automatic shut off
Answer: The pump does not have an automatic shut off. I added a float switch because I wanted it to pump out a sink that had a slow-running clogged drain where I had the washing machine. When the sink was mostly pumped out the float switch turned off the pump. It worked great for a couple years until I got around to dealing with snaking the drain which didn't have an easy clean-out. This is a good pump, since the sink drain got taken care of, we've been using the pump to pump koi pond water over a 5' fence to our neighbor's garden using about 150' of garden hose. The pump runs continuously for 5+ hours without issues in this process.
Question: Will clothes washer hoses fit on this pump
Answer: The pump itself fits a garden hose nicely. You can buy the attachment package listed next to it for the converter piece. It only came to around $8.00. It also comes with a larger hose. I didn't need it for my spa but if you need to empty a washer or bigger pool it seems like it would come in handy. Hope that helps. Good luck. :-)
Question: Can this be user to flush a tankless heater with vinigar
Answer: I bought the pump for this very reason. I'm not sure if it is rated to handle vinegar, but at the price I figured I'd try it and see. I have two tankless water heaters, and I wanted a pump that could clean out both at the same time and this pump certainly does the job. I have a hose that runs from the pump, into a splitter. From the splitter I have two hoses going to each water heater (one hose per water heater). Even pushing water through two hoses, it still has a strong flow, with each hose pushing about the same flow as the water hose faucet outside your house opened wide open (guestimate). The splitter I have allows me to adjust the flow rate by closing off some valves if it is too strong. For just one water heater, i would think this pump is too strong (as it REALLY moves water), but I'm not a plumber so I couldn't say for sure. If I were to do it again, I think I would have purchased the 1/4 HP pump, or even the 1/5HP for cleaning out water heaters with vinegar. I cleaned out my water heater this week for the first time using this pump. I let it run for 2 hrs, and I noticed that it got warm (about the temp of a warm-to-hot bath). I'm not sure if that is normal, but thought I'd let you know.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the return policy, if Float on does not work with the water level in my basement genie. Would the float on work with 5 inch water level
Answer: Not easily. You would need some large wire cutters which would be too obvious on the beach or by the pool. It is well designed for its use.
Question: How does this pump hold up to water softener brine dumps
Answer: This picture looks different than the one we bought. Yes you can shut it without locking. You would have to put the cable in to keep it shut but you can leave the combination set so it won’t lock

Answer: Yes
Question: How can you mount a float switch to this unit
Answer: This pump can be bought with either float switch that is integral to the pump (only one plug) option, I bought the pump that plugs into the stand alone float, I believe you refer to this float as a piggyback float.
Question: I currently have a Model 53 which keeps on dying every 3-5 years. Can I replace it with this one (although the flow is more than 2x
Answer: I don't think you should have any problem as long as the 50 foot is horizontal. I lift about 9 feet out of sump pit, and about 16 feet horizontal and it pumps like crazy.

User questions & answers

Question: What is a tether switch
Answer: A tether switch is the float that with a ball inside, when the water level makes the float the ball drops to the bottom of the float it trips the switch and starts the pump, when the water level drops so the float hangs down it trips another switch and shuts off the power to the pump.
Question: Is there a steel impeller available for this pump
Answer: I don't think so. The impeller is made of hard plastic. The shell is solid cast iron and heavy.
Question: Under important information it says bulb voltage: 100. Do I need any connection for that. I am just replacing my non-working pump
Answer: I'm not sure, but I would guess that they want a minimum of 100 volts while the pump is running. I just replaced my existing pump (which was larger) and plugged it into the existing receptacle. If the size of the pump is the same or smaller there certainly shouldn't be a problem. If you want to do the exercise, connect a voltmeter to a nearby plug on that circuit and observe the voltage while someone turns the pump on and off.
Question: does this pump have two wires, one for the switch and one for the motor or just one for everything
Answer: There is a separate tether switch that plugs into the main cord. It can be removed if you want the pump to run continuously.

User questions & answers

Question: This brings the pump and motor or have to buy it separately?. Hidroneomatico to purchase a tank or working alone
Answer: I have not. However, I can tell you this: I use it to pump water through a 1-1/2 inch hose. It lifts the water over 6 feet with ease and with very high pressure. The lift is incredible. I use it daily for about 2-3 hours. It is powerful and relitively quiet. This is a very good submersible pump considering the price. I can not speak to reliability as I have only used it for about 2 months now. No issues this far.
Question: HP 115V has a black & blue wire (12 ga) and a yellow wire (16 ga) coming from the pump. What are each wire for? Directions have different colors
Answer: pumping from a river with 1 inch suction and 1 inch discharge it takes me about 90 - 100 minutes for 1000 gallon tank. This is with about 30-40 lift from the river bank and a 50 foot discharge hose. When I use it at home to water the lawn I have a 1 inch discharge down to a hose adaptor and then split it to 2 garden hoses and can run 1000 gallons in about 75 minutes. lawn and garden are all on level land and even with the water supply and pump. This pump should be able to move 10 - 13 gpm. Hope this helps.
Question: Does this pump work in septic systems
Answer: 115 volt
Question: What is the warranty on this pump
Answer: Call the manufacturer’s tech support or do a web search.

User questions & answers

Question: What kind of adapter do i need to connect this machine with my existing 2-1/4 inch outer-diameter pvc pipe? is it available on amazon? recommendation
Answer: No problems in the 2 years I’ve had it installed in my aerobic septic system.
Question: The manual mentions an aitlock hole, to be cleaned when the pump is air locked. Where is it located? The pump diagram in the manual does not show it
Answer: 23 inches long x 3.5
Question: the manual shows the check valve location to be within the sump housing. Does it matter if the checkvalve is placed outside the sump housing
Answer: Yes it did. However, I purchased mine several years ago.
Question: inch discharge hook up
Answer: Use the same floats (separate wires and already wired?) and wire tie to the side of PVC coming up out of the pump and leave enough wire to float up and down. High water alarm float (I think the smaller one) attaches higher up than the one that switches pump on&off. If you need to know the wire connections ask and I'll take a picture. Patrick.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there a THREADED inlet to this pump or just an opening on the bottom
Answer: It does not have a threaded inlet, just a protected opening on the bottom. Only the outlet is threaded.
Question: Shut off 23‘ vertically? if not vertically horizontal lay out the pipe will work
Answer: The model 98 can pump to a max height of 23 feet. If you attach 23 ft of pipe vertically to the pump, you will only get a few gallons per minute of flow. See the pump curve picture on the Zoeller site to see how head height affects flow. https://www.zoellerpumps.com/en-us/products/sump-effluent-pumps/residential/model-98
Question: Do I need create a 'well or hole' in my garage to install this pump or Can it sit on the floor surface and function? I had spring flooding last year with about 4" water in my garage - looks possible again this year
Answer: Sorry to say but yes a hole or sump pit is necessary. The motor needs to be under water if it runs very long in order to have the motor cooled. Also the pump will only pump the water level down to about 3 or 4 inches before it sucks air or the float switch turns off. I dont know of any pumps that will do what you want it to do without a sump hole. I have a 50 gallon plastic drum buried in the floor of my basement to act as a sump. You should only need like maybe a 5 gallon bucket buried in your floor if the water just seeps in gradually. If the incoming water comes in in gushes or like a river you might want something bigger.
Question: Hello, Can this 1/2hp model be used with a 1.5 inch discharge pipe
Answer: Yep,works well great pump. 1.5 discharge is what I'm using.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the watt and Amp rating for the 1/2 HP
Answer: The pump has a 2" female threaded discharge port This is a national pipe thread. Pipe is measured by the inside diameter, if you are measuring 2-1/4" outside, then it is most likely a 2" pipe that you have. An adapter needed would depend on the type of pipe you are using, PVC, ABS, Steel and so on and is readily available at any hardware or home improvement store. Thanks
Question: Would the 22 gallons basin 18X22" deep work with this pump? Thank you
Answer: Hi there, With the sewage pumps, an anti airlock hole needs to be drilled into the discharge pipe. Drill a 1/8" or 3/16" hole in the pipe above the discharge poet and below the check valve. If you have further questions, feel free to call us at 1-800-495-9278 Mon - Fri between 8:am & 8:pm central time. Thanks
Question: Can this be use on small homemade septic tank
Answer: The closer to the pump the better, it works harder the further away it is
Question: Anybody know if this is a capacitor start or capacitor run motor
Answer: Yes, you can use a 2" hook up or an adapter to reduce down if needed. This pump will not only save you money but will work better than you think. Mine works great, well worth the money spent and SAVED!!!

User questions & answers

Question: What is the lift capacity of this pump
Answer: The spec sheets on Amazon for this item stated F.L 4.9 Amp, which is about 560 Watts. Thank you.
Question: I am going to put a toilet in my basement along with a sink and utility sink. Is this the right pump for me? Thanks
Answer: It will. It can pump effluent more than 20’ high. Bear in mind the higher you go the less flow you’ll get out of the pump. Are you using this as a sump pump? I use mine in a septic tank to pump the liquid tank into a cesspool so it will always be submerged.
Question: Will the unit grind sewage or is it a pump only
Answer: You bet -- I have mine rigged up to handle the "overflow" that my leech lines can't dispose of -- therefore it doesn't do much "solids" handling in my application.
Question: what waste.sewage does it take care of
Answer: Capacitor start. Thank you.
