User questions & answers
Question: | I have this same model installed that broke, would I be able to unhook all the pipes, remove and just hook up a new one using existing pipes |
Answer: | Yes. |
Question: | How many simultaneous showers will this (the so-called 8.4 GPM unit) handle (in the winter, in a northern state |
Answer: | As far 2 showers at the same time you will be able to tell . The water will feel cooler but not cold. In the winter time I turn mine up to 140. The thermostat only goes up to 130 , but in the book it shows you how to turn it up. |
Question: | What size gas line do I need and is everything I need to install the heater come with it |
Answer: | Minimum size gas line is 3/4". The one I bought came with the shut off valves for the gas and water, but some don't. None of them come with the vent cap and special double wall 5" exhaust duck. It isn't required but you should consider a good drip pan since it does not come with one. It needs electricity. It has a 110V cord/plug, but you have to have an outlet to plug it into. It comes with the remote mounted controller, but it only has about 10' of cord. If you are mounting this in an attic and mounting the control panel down on the main floor you will most likely have to buy some more thermostat cord. It is readily available at any home improvement center and is cheap. |
Question: | What is the BTU |
Answer: | 11,000 min. 180,000 max BTU'sIn you need more technical info or want to see other sizes. Go to Rheems website. http://www.rheem.com |

User questions & answers
Question: | Gallons per minute this unit produces |
Answer: | I believe mine is 9 gallons per minute. It serves a full bath and a 3/4 bath and has never run out of water. |
Question: | How hot can the water get from this unit. I want to run a washer that needs 160 degree water. Will this get this hot |
Answer: | Rheem Unit Rec temperature is 120 degrees & maxes out at 140 degrees. So this unit will not meet your requirements. |
Question: | Is this unit need electricity |
Answer: | Yes. The ignition and internal controller require electricity. The heat is provided by the gas, however. |
Question: | Does this model have a battery back-up (electronic ignition) system for when the power goes out |
Answer: | Buy a UPS backup and plug this unit into it instead. You can read how much this unit draws when running and figure out much run time you would get from the UPS back up you purchased. I'd imagine any UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) backup purchased over a $100 should easily get you an hour or two of continuous use if it's just the blower that's requiring power. A UPS will recharge itself when power is back on so it's really a place and forget solution. You should change the battery in the UPS once a year but check individual UPS backup unit recommendations. This one seems geared for Tankless Water Heaters and other gas appliances and says it should last for 7 days of normal operation -> https://www.amazon.com/HUGO-Battery-Tankless-Heaters-Appliances/dp/B00VQHUKTM/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?crid=1FVBRMYF9L2L7&keywords=ups+battery+backup+for+tankless+water+heater&qid=1575626757&sprefix=UPS+%2Caps%2C210&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEzNFRLTDZDRzZOWjNOJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwOTIzNzEzM0dIN0VFQ1o3SDdRMyZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwNTQ2NzAxSFM2Mk8zVEwzWFk0JndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ== |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this Rheem suffer from the "cold water sandwich" problem |
Answer: | Hot water is only produced when there is demand for it and there is a short delay while the water is heated. So, you can get a momentary cool water output, but I would not call it a problem. In fact, I hardly notice if it happens. |
Question: | What is the difference between the RTGH-95DVLN & RTG-95DVLN models |
Answer: | The Rheem RTG series are Direct Vent indoor and outdoor models; the Rheem Prestige RTGH is a series of high efficiency condensing tankless indoor and outdoor gas water heaters designed for continuous hot water. |
Question: | how much gas does this use at when running. How many CCF. I currently have a 80 gallon high efficiency hot water now. Can I use this connection or do I need to run a 3/4 in gas line directly from the meter |
Answer: | The Rheem water heater uses 199,000 BTU or about 200 CF or 2 CCF. The Rheem installation manual is available on the Rheem web site. On page 53 of the manual, the manufacturer lists the minimum NG pipe size as 3/4 inch diameter. Typically, a tank type water heater has a 1/2 inch supply line that is reduced from a 3/4 inch or larger main supply line. So, you will need to replace the smaller gas line from the original reduction point to your new Rheem tankless water heater. |
Question: | I own a 4 bedroom house. I noticed Home Depot has a Rheem Ecosense 200DVLN. Would this one you have be sufficient |
Answer: | Based on Rheems' product information on their web site and the product specifications on The Home Depot web site, Rheem makes two sizes of tankless natural gas fuels water heaters. One is rated at 8.4 gallons per minute and the other size is 9.5 gpm. Rheem also makes these two sizes in both "condensing" type and "non-condensing" type. The Rheem Ecosense line seems to be just a slight re-branding for The Home Depot and the re-branded product does not seem to be any different than the standard Rheem product sold on Amazon. The Rheem Ecosense ECOH200DVLN at The Home Depot seem to be the same as the RTGH-95DVLN 9.5 sold on Amazon. they are both condensing type (most efficient and easiest to vent) an they both produce a maximum of 9.5 gpm of hot water. Both are the largest capacity models made by Rheem. I have a 4200 sq. ft home with three bathrooms. We can have two showers going and the dishwasher with no reduction in hot water temperature even in the winter (near Chicago) when the inlet water is very cold. So, I would say that the Rheem RTGH-95DVLN 9.5 gpm unit will meet your hot water needs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with exhaust vent |
Answer: | It comes with gray fittings on top that will accept 3" pvc in each. If the vent pipe will be less than 5' you can reduce them down to 2" pvc. You have to buy the pipe and any fittings necessary to reach the outside. It did come with a 3/4" gas shutoff valve. |
Question: | Is this natural gas product |
Answer: | They make them for natural gas and propane. Be sure you select the right one for your gas supply. I just replaced it because I bought a natural gas heater and I have propane and over time it didnt go well. |
Product description
This Smart Technology electric tankless water heater is configured as a "whole home" model for climates where incoming water temperature is 67°F and above. This model is well suited for heating up to 2-Gallon per minute, which is the equivalent of one shower head (with a 1.5 gpm flow) and one sink with a low inlet water temperature of 67°F and an output setting of 105°F. Digital Temperature Control allows you to set your temperature in increments of 1 Degree. This model can also be used in colder climates as a Point of Use for a sink or other low flow application. All tankless water heaters are sized based on flow rate and temperature rise, and there is a direct relationship between the two. So if used in a cold area requiring a high temperature rise, it will be more limited in the amount of fixtures (gallons per minute) it can heat at one time compared to a warmer climate. When sized properly this water heater will provide endless hot water and only consume the energy needed, giving the user complete control. Prior to purchase and installation please verify this model is the right size for the expected demand and electrical requirements. The ECO 11 requires a minimum 125 amp electrical panel for installation with 60 amp double pole breaker connected to set of #6 awg wire. Plumbing connections are 1/2" compression fitting with the option of 1/2" NPT adapter included. For additional assistance please feel free to contact our support center at 877-474-6473.
NOTE : 11Kw at 220 is equal to 13kw at 240. .Activation Flow : 0.3 GPM

User questions & answers
Question: | Ours has only been in service for less than a year - will not adjust temperature to anything above 85 Deg. F. What do you think is the problem ? kds |
Answer: | My only guess is that the rheostat (variable resistor) that the temperature adjustment knob is attached to may be faulty. If that isn't it then I don't know. Sorry. |
Question: | The warrenty says that this unit must be installed by a licensed electrician and plumber, for them to honor the "life time warrenty." why |
Answer: | Hello Bob, The reason is the same as why an innumerable number of gadgets around the world have that little "warranty void if removed" label. Because getting inside of one requires a certain level of training and expertise. Same with this unit. GadgetsGo is an authorized Ecosmart dealer. Kind regards,HenryGadgetsGo |
Question: | My house is wired 110V. What additional items do I need to purchase for the conversion |
Answer: | Just to expand slightly on prior answers, normally a residential service feed is 240 volts between the two incoming hot legs. There is also a neutral leg, which (hopefully) has zero potential with reference to ground. The voltage between either one of the hot legs and the neutral leg is 120 volts. The 120 volt circuits in your house are connected to one or the other of the two hot legs, and only one. An attempt is made to assign circuits to the two hot legs in a way that will roughly balance the load between them. The other side of a 120 volt circuit is connected to the neutral leg. There is additionally a safety ground run with the circuit, which also ties into the panel. Certain devices require more power (work product of current and voltage) than is practical to deliver using a 120 volt circuit. Common examples are your clothes dryer, and your electric stove. These devices are powered by both hot legs, with a difference in potential of 240 volts. This water heater is also such a device.STRONG BUT FRIENDLY WARNING: If you did not already know this, please don't make wiring this water heater your learning opportunity with electricity. Hire someone who knows how to do it right. Cutting corners, especially with higher currents and voltages, can lead to equipment damage, fire, and electrocution. Electricity is not magic, and you can certainly learn how to do many common wiring tasks safely on your own, but today is not the day to begin that journey. You need properly sized components, properly installed, and connected to an adequate service. Also, if you really, really foul up, you could conceivably wind up making that morning shower more energizing than you ever imagined, if you get what I mean. So newly aspiring electricians should go fix their grandmother's favorite table lamp instead. Once they have that working they can use it to to start reading books about electricity, residential wiring, and eventually, books about this stuff: http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_8?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=nec+code&sprefix=nec+code%2Caps%2C164 . Of course, you still have to know not to nick conductors when you strip them, and other trade craft like that ; ) . Like almost everything in life that is fun, electricity will hurt you. Sort of like all those people you dated for a while, and then wished later you had never met. |
Question: | what amp breaker is required |
Answer: | The National Electrical Code requires conductors and overcurrent protection to be sized at 100% of the manufacturer's branch circuit recommendation for tankless electric water heaters. A 60 amp breaker is the same price as a 40 or 50, it is the wire that costs more. #6 AWG wire is required for a 60 amp circuit. If you undersize the wire it could overheat and catch fire. Protect your family and follow the manufacturer's sizing for this, or any other, electrical device. Your family's lives are worth the extra money. |

3 Smart Steps for Endless Hot Water
Step 1: Determining your average inlet water temperature is important, this allows you to determine how well your unit will perform in your desired location. A lower inlet water temperature will require a higher kilowatt product.
Step 2: Next you will determine how many applications your unit can run simultaneously at your chosen location inlet water temperature. Tankless electric water heaters are sized for maximum simultaneous use, not maximum fixtures in your home.
Step 3: Determining specifications and electrical infrastructure is important because without the correct infrastructure your unit may not fit into your breaker panel.

Question: | We have a 500sq' apt. 1 kitchen sink, 1 lav sink and tub/shower. This tankless heats water to both sinks but nothing to the tub/sh. Help |
Answer: | Sinks have aerators to slow down the water where a tub doesn't. It sounds like one possibility is that your exceeding the GPM for this heater. Next possibility, double check an measure your actually getting at least 240v at the heater, I had an issue where my unit was only getting 235v an it was causing a similar issue where only one of the two heating elements was activating. I had it set to 125F but it was coming out 100F. It was warm and without a meter I would of thought it was working correctly until I tried filling a tub. It couldn't even get the water warm. I pulled my wires out an restripped an cut an screwed them in an it fixed my problem, now its measuring around 245v. Make sure there is no copper showing after screwing down your input wires. Now filling the tub I noticed after about 10-15 seconds the water gets too hot to touch. I set it to 135F. |
Question: | Do these tankless water heaters require an overflow line to the outside of the home or a pan like is required on normal water heaters |
Answer: | No tank, so, no overflow line required. It mounts on the wall. A pan is needed if required by building code in your city. |

Question: | Does anyone know how much electricity this unit uses (operation/standby/antifreeze)? I can't find it on the spec sheet |
Answer: | Only the controller and igniter uses electricity. It is hardly any. Maybe an amp. |
Question: | What unit is shipped rtg-84dvp or rtg-84dvlp ? can this be converted to natural gas |
Answer: | You should call the manufacturer and ask them if they have a conversion kit from propane to natural gas...my "guess" is no, it cannot be converted to natural gas, simply because Rheem manufactures units specifically for natural gas. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does it come with a sensor value |
Answer: | Not sure what you mean by "sensor value". |
Question: | What type of plumbing is required to get water circulating into the house for instant hot water |
Answer: | The easiest way is to use the existing cold water line in conjunction with a Grundfos Hot Water Recirculation Valve. This valve gets installed at the faucet farthest from the water heater. Using the internal circulation pump in the Rheem heater the system pumps hot water out to the recirculation valve which then opens to allow the circulating water to return to the water heater via the cold water line. I installed this Rheem heater and recirculation valve a month ago and it works very well. |
