9 best indoor natural gas heater
Indoor natural gas heaters are heating appliances that use natural gas as a fuel source to generate heat for indoor spaces. They are commonly used in homes, businesses, and other indoor environments to provide warmth and comfort. Here are some key points about indoor natural gas heaters:
Heating Mechanism: Indoor natural gas heaters typically use a combustion process to produce heat. Natural gas is burned in a controlled manner within the heater, and the resulting heat is distributed throughout the space.
Types of Indoor Natural Gas Heaters:
- Furnaces: Furnaces are central heating systems that use natural gas to heat air. The heated air is then circulated through ductwork to various rooms in the building.
- Space Heaters: These are standalone units designed to heat a specific area or room. They come in various types, including wall-mounted, freestanding, and vent-free models.
- Water Heaters: Some indoor natural gas heaters are designed to heat water for domestic use, such as for showers, sinks, and appliances. These are known as natural gas water heaters and are commonly found in homes.
Venting: Safety is a crucial consideration when using indoor natural gas heaters. Most heaters require proper venting to expel combustion byproducts, such as carbon monoxide, outside the building. Vent-free models are designed to operate without venting but have safety features like oxygen depletion sensors.
Efficiency: Natural gas heaters are known for their energy efficiency. They can provide reliable and cost-effective heating solutions, potentially reducing energy bills compared to other heating methods.
Installation and Maintenance: Installation and maintenance of indoor natural gas heaters should be performed by qualified professionals to ensure safety and efficiency. Regular inspections and servicing are essential to prevent issues and maintain optimal performance.
Safety Considerations: It is crucial to have carbon monoxide detectors in areas where indoor natural gas heaters are used to monitor for any potential leaks or malfunctions.Adequate ventilation is also necessary to prevent the buildup of harmful gases.
Thermostats and Controls: Many indoor natural gas heaters come with thermostats and controls that allow users to set and maintain the desired temperature. Programmable thermostats can help improve energy efficiency by adjusting heating levels based on occupancy and time of day.
Size and Capacity: When choosing an indoor natural gas heater, it's essential to consider the size and heating capacity required for the space you intend to heat. An appropriately sized heater will be more efficient and effective.
In summary, indoor natural gas heaters are valuable heating appliances that provide warmth and comfort in various indoor settings. They are available in different types and sizes to meet the heating needs of homes and businesses. Safety, proper installation, and regular maintenance are crucial aspects of using natural gas heaters to ensure both efficient heating and the safety of occupants.

User questions & answers
Question: | if it has a thermostat, what temperature is it shutting off? I have a different fire place with a 73 degree shut off manufacturing setting, not enought |
Answer: | I asked the manufacturer for the thermostate info. It has a knob on top from 1-5. 1-60.8°f 2-75.2°f 3-89.6°f 4-104°f 5-118.4°f He also said that they could vary slightly from heater to heater. |
Question: | I don't see a pic or anything that shows where/how the fan mounts. Does anyone know |
Answer: | The fan will mount on the back of the heater. There is a punch out that will be removed and the fan will go in it's place. |
Question: | Would this heater work in a 2 car garage |
Answer: | In short yes. we have this on the first floor of our house. it is not yet winter, but this is a 30,000 BTU heater; it heats the entire house fast - like 20 mins upstairs and down. I would say the same for a two car garage. I plan on moving this unit to the basement shop which is exposed to ground level in the back and unheated; basically a 1 car garage back there and I expect this to out perform. I will add one thing: this is the blue flame unit. I have had shop heaters before and prefer the radiant heaters (of which Mr Heater makes one just like this) - they have the clay looking elements in them that glow red/orange; those heaters will heat things in the space and then those items give off the heat. I used to aim one at my roll away tool box. in an area where you might have a lot of space up above, such as a loft the radiant version of this heater may be better as it will heat the items it is near with less heated air floating up. either way, this is a safe bet. |
Question: | Does the mhvfb30ngt unit have an automatic igniter to maintain temperature or do you to to push an igniter switch to start it each time |
Answer: | It has a pilot lit that will stay lit at all times, unless you turn the dial to the Off position. The heater will start up when the thermostat dial settings determines that it's time to turn the heater on. |
Question: | I stripped the threads on the heater, how can i fix this |
Answer: | You can tap it out if you have a tap and die set, otherwise you will have to order new parts |
Question: | Want 30000 Btu radiant heater with blower |
Answer: | The 30000 BTU heater will be the model number MHVFRD30LPT. Click on link provided to view the heater. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Corporation-Radiant-MHVFRD30LPT/dp/B01DPZ56KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514918538&sr=8-1&keywords=MHVFRD30LPT |
Question: | Will this work with a 20 pound tank |
Answer: | Yes, but you will need to add a regulator between the heater and the 20 pound tank for safety |
Question: | So, it has no thermostat but output is variable? How does this work |
Answer: | It does NOT have a thermostat, settings are either high or low. It will NOT turn on and off on it's own when reaching certain temperatures, it even says its NOT thermostat controlled in the manual. |

Radiant Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and Infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Infrared heater warms objects. It doesn’t warm the air like a Blue Flame. It can be put in an area with objects which the heater will heat and then the object will heat the air. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this Rheem suffer from the "cold water sandwich" problem |
Answer: | Hot water is only produced when there is demand for it and there is a short delay while the water is heated. So, you can get a momentary cool water output, but I would not call it a problem. In fact, I hardly notice if it happens. |
Question: | What is the difference between the RTGH-95DVLN & RTG-95DVLN models |
Answer: | The Rheem RTG series are Direct Vent indoor and outdoor models; the Rheem Prestige RTGH is a series of high efficiency condensing tankless indoor and outdoor gas water heaters designed for continuous hot water. |
Question: | how much gas does this use at when running. How many CCF. I currently have a 80 gallon high efficiency hot water now. Can I use this connection or do I need to run a 3/4 in gas line directly from the meter |
Answer: | The Rheem water heater uses 199,000 BTU or about 200 CF or 2 CCF. The Rheem installation manual is available on the Rheem web site. On page 53 of the manual, the manufacturer lists the minimum NG pipe size as 3/4 inch diameter. Typically, a tank type water heater has a 1/2 inch supply line that is reduced from a 3/4 inch or larger main supply line. So, you will need to replace the smaller gas line from the original reduction point to your new Rheem tankless water heater. |
Question: | I own a 4 bedroom house. I noticed Home Depot has a Rheem Ecosense 200DVLN. Would this one you have be sufficient |
Answer: | Based on Rheems' product information on their web site and the product specifications on The Home Depot web site, Rheem makes two sizes of tankless natural gas fuels water heaters. One is rated at 8.4 gallons per minute and the other size is 9.5 gpm. Rheem also makes these two sizes in both "condensing" type and "non-condensing" type. The Rheem Ecosense line seems to be just a slight re-branding for The Home Depot and the re-branded product does not seem to be any different than the standard Rheem product sold on Amazon. The Rheem Ecosense ECOH200DVLN at The Home Depot seem to be the same as the RTGH-95DVLN 9.5 sold on Amazon. they are both condensing type (most efficient and easiest to vent) an they both produce a maximum of 9.5 gpm of hot water. Both are the largest capacity models made by Rheem. I have a 4200 sq. ft home with three bathrooms. We can have two showers going and the dishwasher with no reduction in hot water temperature even in the winter (near Chicago) when the inlet water is very cold. So, I would say that the Rheem RTGH-95DVLN 9.5 gpm unit will meet your hot water needs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I'm looking to put a natural gas heater in my bathroom so which one could I put in it |
Answer: | I'm not sure what you mean by which one. This one as best I can remember came with feet, but is very on the back and sides and could be wall mounted. Unless you have a very large bathroom or no other heat in your house this heater would be very adequate. I love mine. |
Question: | Can this be used in an rv |
Answer: | It would be dangerous to run this in such a confined space. I live in a large old drafty house and the heater is in a room 16x16 foot room that has 14 foot ceiling. Get a heater designed for and RV. Ideally electric to reduce risk of asphixiation.... |
Question: | Can it be connected to an exhaust vent for the gasses |
Answer: | It has no exhaust port. It's made to be safe (like a gas oven) not having a vent. I use my to pretty much heat my whole little house and have never noticed a problem. Many gas fireplaces are made the same way. |
Question: | does anyone know if there is an optional blower for this unit |
Answer: | No. On't the 20k and 30k btu versions can use the optional blower. |

User questions & answers
Question: | which models are "condensing" units, please |
Answer: | I don’t know. But I suggest u look for a different brand. It already failed twice in less than a year and their warranty is a scam. They provide the parts which are pennies and leave out labor. |
Question: | How does it effect the water pressure, will it change |
Answer: | It does not effect my water pressure at all. I’ve had it for over a year now |
Question: | My existing water heater is located next to and shares a flue with the furnace. Can I hook the same way on this |
Answer: | Hold up there, previous answer, not so fast. It is true that you should not have both the hot water heater and furnace venting directly into the flue, combining the exhaust. However, some people see their vent pipes entering the flue (or chimney wall) and assume they are both releasing the fumes inside the chimney. In some cases, the venting pipes continue separately up the flue. Joseph, if you have two vent pipes entering your flue, there is a chance that both pipes continue separately up the flue and out the top. If that is the case, you may be able to use the existing hot water vent system. When you look at the top of your chimney, do you see two terminations coming out? |
Question: | How does very cold intake water affect performance |
Answer: | Sorry to contradict but the temperature of the water going into the water heater will definitely have an effect on the temperature of the water coming out. the water heater needs to provide enough BTUs to heat the volume of water that you need to the water temperature that you want. If the water starts off at a lower temperature it will take more BTUs to get it to the temperature you want. This unit claims to be able to provide 6.6 gallons of hot water per minute but that assumes the water is startling an average temperature. If you have a modern shower head it will only use about 2.5 GPM but if you have second shower going, a hot water faucet open or a clothes washer filling at the same time you will run out of capacity quickly. Rinnai should have tables on their website that shows the ability of the unit to heat water at a variety of starting temperatures to a range of hot water temperatures at a given flow rate. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this unit work to heat a hot tub |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Does it have two heat exchangers and are they stainless steel or copper |
Answer: | The EZ Ultra HE has two heat exchangers. The primary one that is heated by the gas burners appears by color to be copper. The other heat exchanger, designed to pre-heat the incoming water by the hot exhaust gas, seems to be integrated deeply enough into the exhaust system that I can't suss much detail of its construction. |
Question: | EF number |
Answer: | > 92% |
Question: | Is this water heater usable at 6000 feet above sea level |
Answer: | The manuals don't say for certain, but this unit can operate at very low GPM flow (.6) and pressure (8 psi). The Orange Big Box website also says "...making this unit suitable for users living at high altitude or those using well water with older or less powerful pumping systems." I have mine installed at a beach house, so I'm not a good candidate to vouch for the elevation compatibility. You might have to call EZTankless for the engineering answer. I will say that I am very pleased with the installation and operation of my unit. It has worked flawlessly and is super efficient. I use a Wifi switch to turn it off/on when I'm not there for an extended period of time. It lowered my utility bills by about $75 month. |

Question: | Is 6.6 gpm adequate for showers |
Answer: | Should be more than adequate for multiple simultaneous showers (depends on type of shower head, temperature you like the water, etc.).
