11 best heating pool costs

Heating a pool involves the use of various heating systems to raise the water temperature to a comfortable and enjoyable level. The costs associated with heating a pool can vary significantly based on several factors, including the type of heating system, the size of the pool, local climate conditions, and energy costs. Here's what you should know about the costs of heating a pool:

  1. Type of Heating System:

    • Gas Heaters: Gas heaters are a common choice for pool heating. They use natural gas or propane to heat the pool water quickly. While they are effective, the operating costs can be relatively high due to the cost of gas.
    • Electric Heat Pumps: Heat pumps are energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. They extract heat from the air and transfer it to the pool water. Although they have lower operating costs compared to gas heaters, they tend to have a higher upfront cost.
    • Solar Heaters: Solar pool heaters utilize energy from the sun to warm the pool water. While they have minimal operational costs, the initial installation cost can be significant. They are most cost-effective in sunny climates.
    • Wood-Burning Heaters: These heaters burn wood to generate heat for the pool water. They are relatively inexpensive to operate but require a steady supply of wood.
  2. Pool Size and Volume: Larger pools require more energy to heat, which translates to higher costs. Smaller pools are generally more cost-effective to heat.

  3. Local Climate: The local climate has a significant impact on heating costs. In colder regions, it takes more energy and time to raise the pool temperature, which can increase operational expenses.

  4. Energy Efficiency: Choosing an energy-efficient heating system can help reduce long-term operating costs. Heat pumps and solar heaters are typically more efficient than gas heaters.

  5. Installation Costs: Consider the cost of purchasing and installing the heating system. Gas and electric heat pumps may require professional installation, while solar heaters may need additional infrastructure like solar panels.

  6. Maintenance Costs: Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the efficient operation of heating systems. Maintenance costs can vary depending on the type of system.

  7. Energy Prices: The cost of the energy source (e.g., gas, electricity, wood) in your area will impact the operational costs of the heating system.

  8. Pool Cover: Using a pool cover when the pool is not in use can help retain heat and reduce heating costs by preventing heat loss through evaporation.

  9. Seasonal Usage: The duration of the swimming season and how often you use the pool will affect overall heating costs. Pools that are only heated occasionally will have lower costs than those continuously heated.

  10. Insulation: Proper insulation around the pool and heating equipment can help retain heat and reduce heat loss, ultimately lowering heating costs.

To estimate the heating costs for your specific pool, it's essential to consider all these factors and potentially consult with a pool heating professional. Keep in mind that while some heating systems may have higher initial costs, they can provide long-term energy savings and a more comfortable swimming experience.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use a submersible pump that generate 10 psi at the solar panel's inlet? 1.5 HP sounds like an overkill and involves high energy to run
Answer: Given that our pump shows a bit more than 10 psi (four panels, connected in paralell) I can't see why 10 at the inlet won't work. I found these panels worked more efficiently (much higher flow) plumbing two intakes at one end, and one return at the other. There is more pipe involved, but i was able to use my existing Intex pool pump with about 18ft of head on the system.
Question: I have a 14' x 40' inground pool; would everyone recommend that I buy two of these to go along the entire length of the pool, would one be okay
Answer: Unless your pool is only 2 feet deep, you definitely need at least 2 panels. I have a 14' x 30' pool and 2 is the correct number for sufficient heating in TX. Rule of thumb, 1 panel for every 5000 gallons of pool. Also, you don't need to run them the length of the pool end to end. I have mine side by side up on top of the roof of my pergola. That way they don't take up as much room. I've also installed them side by side up on the house roof.
Question: Is this one 4x20 piece or two seperate 2x10 pieces
Answer: A 4x20 package is two 2x20 panels with a short section of hose to connect them together.
Question: Are you able to curve it around a pool or must it be straight out
Answer: The panels actually come rolled up so curving them should not be a problem.

Ecosmart ECO 18 Electric Tankless Water Heater, 18 KW at 240 Volts with Patented Self Modulating Technology,White

EcoSmart

Based on 3 reviews Check latest price

Product description

This Smart Technology electric tankless water heater is configured as a "whole home" model for climates where incoming water temperature is 62°F and above. The ECO 18 is capable of heating over 2.5 gallons per minute, which is the equivalent of one water saver shower head (with a 1.5 gpm flow) and one sink with a low inlet water temperature of 62°F, and an output setting of 105° F. Two showers emitting no more than 1.5 gpm each can be run simultaneously when incoming water temperature is above 70° F. Digital temperature control allows you to set your temperature in increments of 1°. All tankless water heaters are sized based on flow rate and temperature rise, and there is a direct relationship between the two. So if used in a cold area requiring a high temperature rise, it will be more limited in the amount of fixtures (gallons per minute) it can heat at one time compared to a warmer climate. However, when sized properly it will provide endless hot water and only consume the energy needed, giving the user complete control. Prior to purchase and installation please verify this model is the right size for the expected demand and electrical requirements. The ECO 18 requires a minimum 150 amp electrical panel for installation with 40 amp double pole breakers connected to sets of #8 awg wire. Plumbing connections are 3/4" NPT. For additional assistance please feel free to contact our support center at 877-474-6473.

User questions & answers

Question: How do know which size to buy? We will supply two bathrooms, dish washer, clothes washer. What size should I choose
Answer: I noted someone below stating they got the largest one and they can only run one water source at a time. My guess is they installed it wrong by not getting the electric hooked up right, or maybe the unit was just defective, or they live in Alaska. I went under size with an Eco 27 a few years ago because that’s all my electric panel could handle. We have zero issues in the summer. During winter months we can only run one shower at a time and have to slowly fill a tub (maybe 3/4 fill speed). To save as much money as I am on electric bill and have unlimited shower lengths (only 1 person at a time mid-Dec to mid-March) is totally worth it. On here today because I’m thinking of upping my panel size so was thinking of going with a larger one now. Regardless, CCRC’s experience with the largest unit not working is nothing like the experience I’ve had, and again I intentionally undersized mine for the house. The website has a clear chart to explain size you need based on number of water fixtures in your home and ground water temperature.
Question: Can this unit supply a 3,700 sq foot home with 3 1/2 baths
Answer: In the lower states it can, but in the northern states, multiple simultaneous users, it will be overloaded. If you can afford a 3,700 square foot home, then you can place a unit in each appropriate demand zone and be very glad you did. I love mine, live in KY, get great supply when the water is above 60 degrees, and then it slows the flow as the temperature drops. I have dishwasher, washing machine, garden tube, 2 showers, 3 sinks and 4 people. It is better than great in the summer, okay spring and fall, and we are conservative in the winter.
Question: What is the power consumption of this tank-less heater
Answer: The instantaneous power consumption while the hot water is running is quite high (up to 18kW or 27kW depending on which model you’re looking at on this page). However, when no hot water is being used, the power consumption is 0 (or a minuscule amount to run an LED light or something). The total power consumption over the course of several days or longer should be much lower than a tank heater but the short term power usage while the heater is making hot water will be much higher than a tank heater. It’s just that the unit sits idle most of the time while a tank heater will use power fairly frequently even when no hot water is needed as the water in the tank cools off over time and needs to be re-heater fairly constantly
Question: remote
Answer: This unit does not have the ability to have a remote temperature control.

3 Smart Steps for Endless Hot Water

Step 1: Determining your average inlet water temperature is important, this allows you to determine how well your unit will perform in your desired location. A lower inlet water temperature will require a higher kilowatt product.

Step 2: Next you will determine how many applications your unit can run simultaneously at your chosen location inlet water temperature. Tankless electric water heaters are sized for maximum simultaneous use, not maximum fixtures in your home.

Step 3: Determining specifications and electrical infrastructure is important because without the correct infrastructure your unit may not fit into your breaker panel.

Once installed, these panels are cost effective, produce no greenhouse gases, and need low to no maintenance. Extend your swimming this year at a low cost with the help from the sun!
  • System is designed to be used on above-ground or in-ground pools. Each kit is made of - 2' x 20'ft panels. Each panel is made of lightweight, flexible, durable black polypropylene. The panel tube construction creates a larger surface area which optimizes heat transfer from the sun to your pool
  • Quantity of these solar panels needed is dependent on the pool size and the location, which may estimate by some websites.
  • Diverter kit may be required for pumps 1.5hp and greater. Sold separately under item number B01FNE41HA

User questions & answers

Question: Are these panels expandable
Answer: yes of course, everything you need there at Home Depotbest gds hans
Question: I am using a low flow solar pump. I think I should remove the baffle and block the flow between sections so water flows up onside and down the other
Answer: That is exactly what I did. I plugged the hole in the baffle disc and diverted the water into two sections at a time. So I have a total of ten sections and the water travels up two, then back two, then backup two, until it exits. My pump is a 6 gpm solar pump and it works fine.
Question: How many panels do you receive? Picture shows
Answer: You receive 2 panels, each with 2 sections, so 4 ribbons. I say this because if this is at an angle it will sag. I squeeze it between 2 boards at various points because I have it at an angle on a rig above the ground.
Question: How many HP does your pump have to be for this solar heater
Answer: I used two of these on my 10,000 gallon pool. I did not use my 1hp pool pump ( I did not want to run it for 8 hours a day). I set up a small 250 GPH utility pump to circulate water. I run it for 8 hours a day at a cost of about 15 cents a day. The incoming temp was about 75- outgoing about 100. It resulted in a raise of total pool temp of about 8 degrees. The HP of the circulating pump does not make a difference. Only a set amount of Sun energy can be transferred to the water based on the sq. footage of the panels, amount of sun and hours per day of circulation. The HP or GPH will not make a difference as long as you are circulating water through the panel.

User questions & answers

Question: What is the maximum amount of gallons that this pool heater will warm up? Also, by how many degrees
Answer: 1 box of the S421P panels will heat up to 31ft round aboveground pool or 18'x36' oval pool. It can heat it up to as much as 15 degrees. SPQ Brands
Question: can this be used to heat a [4 person] hot tub to a comfortably HOT temperature
Answer: No. It only increases the temperature 6-10 degrees. If the water is hot then it may retain the heat & increase a little but would not be good as a main source of heat.
Question: Did you use one or two panels
Answer: We used 2 panels
Question: what all is included in the purchase? hoses? clamps
Answer: I purchased the kit with 2 solar panels. It comes with pvc caps for one end of the panels. A rubber hose to connect the two panels together on the other end, as well as hose clamps. 2 pvc fittings for input and output flow to the panels. These are made to connect the filter hose to the panels. (although we bought new fittings to use all pvc pipe) It doesn't have any mounting hardware or rack to mount the panels to. So don't expect to have everything you will need. The picture on this ad shows more than what you will get. But performance of this heater has been very satisfying

Question: Would this help keep algae away if I don't use chemicals and only use salt and baking soda
Answer: If they are little pen needles yes
Question: Can you use in above ground pools
Answer: Don't know. Contact the company
Question: Will this jet cause the pressure to go up in the plumbing? If so how much
Answer: Hi I use mine while on a boat scuba diving. It works great. Ice packs have sleeves to slide your ice packs in. Plenty of room! I hope my answer helps. Take care.
Question: Does it do well in salt water pools
Answer: I use this bag for the same thing and it works every time. It holds the pen, needles and alcohol wipes.
Question: is this case fda approved
Answer: Not sure this will help, but I use it for eye drops that stay frozen and than get used. It is a very small container that the drops come in, so I just put them in between 2 ice packs inside the folded part, although I used all 4 ice packs. The entire pack stayed fine for about 16 hrs.
Question: How long does the insulin stay cold
Answer: Well, this product will keep that temperature for at least 12hrs, but everything depends on the outside temp.

Question: My house is wired 110V. What additional items do I need to purchase for the conversion
Answer: Just to expand slightly on prior answers, normally a residential service feed is 240 volts between the two incoming hot legs. There is also a neutral leg, which (hopefully) has zero potential with reference to ground. The voltage between either one of the hot legs and the neutral leg is 120 volts. The 120 volt circuits in your house are connected to one or the other of the two hot legs, and only one. An attempt is made to assign circuits to the two hot legs in a way that will roughly balance the load between them. The other side of a 120 volt circuit is connected to the neutral leg. There is additionally a safety ground run with the circuit, which also ties into the panel. Certain devices require more power (work product of current and voltage) than is practical to deliver using a 120 volt circuit. Common examples are your clothes dryer, and your electric stove. These devices are powered by both hot legs, with a difference in potential of 240 volts. This water heater is also such a device.STRONG BUT FRIENDLY WARNING: If you did not already know this, please don't make wiring this water heater your learning opportunity with electricity. Hire someone who knows how to do it right. Cutting corners, especially with higher currents and voltages, can lead to equipment damage, fire, and electrocution. Electricity is not magic, and you can certainly learn how to do many common wiring tasks safely on your own, but today is not the day to begin that journey. You need properly sized components, properly installed, and connected to an adequate service. Also, if you really, really foul up, you could conceivably wind up making that morning shower more energizing than you ever imagined, if you get what I mean. So newly aspiring electricians should go fix their grandmother's favorite table lamp instead. Once they have that working they can use it to to start reading books about electricity, residential wiring, and eventually, books about this stuff: http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_8?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=nec+code&sprefix=nec+code%2Caps%2C164 . Of course, you still have to know not to nick conductors when you strip them, and other trade craft like that ; ) . Like almost everything in life that is fun, electricity will hurt you. Sort of like all those people you dated for a while, and then wished later you had never met.
Question: what amp breaker is required
Answer: The National Electrical Code requires conductors and overcurrent protection to be sized at 100% of the manufacturer's branch circuit recommendation for tankless electric water heaters. A 60 amp breaker is the same price as a 40 or 50, it is the wire that costs more. #6 AWG wire is required for a 60 amp circuit. If you undersize the wire it could overheat and catch fire. Protect your family and follow the manufacturer's sizing for this, or any other, electrical device. Your family's lives are worth the extra money. 

User questions & answers

Question: Can the flow rate be adjusted up from 0.5gpm to say 1gpm or 1.5gpm (understood that the output water will be corresponding less hotter)? thanks in adv
Answer: This is a 199,000 btu model, a 3/4" gas line is required to have sufficient gas supply.
Question: degree water going in what degree will be at the tap
Answer: rinnai recommends the GTK03 Grundfos kit for this unit
Question: are any of these tankless water heaters plug in
Answer: I think, you need buy a WiFi module, call Rennai and ask. Circ-logic did not work for me, I had to install re circulation pipe. Because of the high minimum flow requirements, this unit did not work with any regular re circulation pump, so wasted money buying a Watts pump. And paid double for the labor. Rennai told me that I should have bought their thankless heater with re-circulation built in.
Question: Would you recommend this model for a shower in a guest bathroom
Answer: IT CAME WITH ADAPTERS ON THE TOP. NO PIPING.

User questions & answers

Question: Can the temperature output be adjusted to 105F
Answer: Most rinnai tankless weather it is out door or indoor, have a control board to adjust temp and either on or off
Question: Can I use the Rinnai V65EP in Denver, Co? Temperatures during the winter can get below zero
Answer: It can definately be out doors in freezing temps, tho power failure arent good for it while in a freeze, tho keep in mind it will use alot more energy for frost protection, indoor units are safer amd more efficient in this case
Question: Does this unit come with controller? rinnai tech said i needed a mc-91-2us controller? do i need to buy separate
Answer: I bought model V65EN. It came with a wired digital controller. The installer did not run the wire into the house and mount the controller indoors. He simply set the controller at 120 degrees and left the controller inside the unit. If I want to change the temp, I have to take the cover of the unit.
Question: What does the "Low NOx Mean
Answer: Good place to check for info like this is Wikipedia. Here is what they say: Energy efficiencieseditMore tangible cost savings are defined when comparing the energy efficiencies of gas heaters with low NOx emissions with conventional flued types. Gas heaters with emission problems are flued and inherently lose substantial energies in the form of hot flue gases to the atmosphere. In addition, the choice of placement of flued heaters is greatly impaired due to flue installation restrictions. In contrast, dedicated low emission gas heaters do not require a flue system. Furthermore, with the introduction of oxygen depletion sensors and thermostatic controls, they do not place critical reliance on ventilation as previously was the case. These heaters can be positioned more conveniently and centralised to affect optimum warm air distribution. By definition unflued low NOx gas heaters are 100% efficient as all heat energy released from the flame is converted to useful heat.Hope this helps. June
