12 best gas heaters for the home
Gas heaters for the home are commonly used to provide space heating and hot water. They are a popular choice because they are efficient and can provide a constant supply of heat and hot water. Gas heaters are often powered by natural gas or propane and are available in various types and configurations, including:
Tankless Water Heaters: Tankless water heaters, also known as on-demand water heaters, heat water as it is needed, rather than storing hot water in a tank. This makes them more energy-efficient as they don't constantly heat and reheat water. They are suitable for homes with moderate to low hot water demands.
Tank Water Heaters: Tank water heaters store and continuously heat a large volume of water. They are suitable for homes with high hot water demands. These heaters come in various sizes, typically measured in gallons, and you should choose the size that meets your household's needs.
Gas Furnaces: Gas furnaces are used for space heating and operate by blowing heated air through ducts into different rooms. They are energy-efficient and can be integrated into central heating systems.
Combination Boilers: Combination boilers, or combi boilers, provide both hot water and space heating in a single unit. They are space-saving and can be a good choice for smaller homes with limited space for heating equipment.
Venting Options: Gas heaters require proper venting to expel combustion gases safely. Common venting options include natural draft (venting through a chimney), direct vent (using a sealed combustion system), and power vent (using a fan to exhaust gases).
Efficiency: When choosing a gas heater, consider its energy efficiency, typically measured by the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) for furnaces and the Energy Factor (EF) for water heaters. Higher efficiency units will save you money on energy bills in the long run.
Maintenance: Gas heaters require regular maintenance to ensure safety and efficiency. This includes cleaning burners, checking for gas leaks, and inspecting the venting system. It's essential to have a qualified technician perform these tasks.
Safety Features: Modern gas heaters come with safety features such as automatic shut-off valves, pressure relief valves, and temperature controls to prevent accidents and overheating.
Local Regulations: When installing a gas heater, it's essential to comply with local building codes and regulations. This may involve obtaining permits and having the installation inspected by local authorities.
Cost: The cost of a gas heater can vary significantly depending on the type, size, and brand. It's essential to consider both the initial purchase price and long-term operating costs.
In conclusion, gas heaters for the home, including water heaters and space heating systems, provide a reliable and efficient way to meet your heating and hot water needs. However, proper installation, maintenance, and compliance with safety regulations are crucial to ensure their safe and effective operation.

User questions & answers
Question: | if it has a thermostat, what temperature is it shutting off? I have a different fire place with a 73 degree shut off manufacturing setting, not enought |
Answer: | I asked the manufacturer for the thermostate info. It has a knob on top from 1-5. 1-60.8°f 2-75.2°f 3-89.6°f 4-104°f 5-118.4°f He also said that they could vary slightly from heater to heater. |
Question: | I don't see a pic or anything that shows where/how the fan mounts. Does anyone know |
Answer: | The fan will mount on the back of the heater. There is a punch out that will be removed and the fan will go in it's place. |
Question: | Would this heater work in a 2 car garage |
Answer: | In short yes. we have this on the first floor of our house. it is not yet winter, but this is a 30,000 BTU heater; it heats the entire house fast - like 20 mins upstairs and down. I would say the same for a two car garage. I plan on moving this unit to the basement shop which is exposed to ground level in the back and unheated; basically a 1 car garage back there and I expect this to out perform. I will add one thing: this is the blue flame unit. I have had shop heaters before and prefer the radiant heaters (of which Mr Heater makes one just like this) - they have the clay looking elements in them that glow red/orange; those heaters will heat things in the space and then those items give off the heat. I used to aim one at my roll away tool box. in an area where you might have a lot of space up above, such as a loft the radiant version of this heater may be better as it will heat the items it is near with less heated air floating up. either way, this is a safe bet. |
Question: | Does the mhvfb30ngt unit have an automatic igniter to maintain temperature or do you to to push an igniter switch to start it each time |
Answer: | It has a pilot lit that will stay lit at all times, unless you turn the dial to the Off position. The heater will start up when the thermostat dial settings determines that it's time to turn the heater on. |
Question: | I stripped the threads on the heater, how can i fix this |
Answer: | You can tap it out if you have a tap and die set, otherwise you will have to order new parts |
Question: | Want 30000 Btu radiant heater with blower |
Answer: | The 30000 BTU heater will be the model number MHVFRD30LPT. Click on link provided to view the heater. https://www.amazon.com/Mr-Heater-Corporation-Radiant-MHVFRD30LPT/dp/B01DPZ56KU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514918538&sr=8-1&keywords=MHVFRD30LPT |
Question: | Will this work with a 20 pound tank |
Answer: | Yes, but you will need to add a regulator between the heater and the 20 pound tank for safety |
Question: | So, it has no thermostat but output is variable? How does this work |
Answer: | It does NOT have a thermostat, settings are either high or low. It will NOT turn on and off on it's own when reaching certain temperatures, it even says its NOT thermostat controlled in the manual. |

Radiant Vent Free Heaters
Our Vent Free heaters need no external power, great for power outages and applications with no electricity. They can be mounted to the wall with the supplied bracket or on the floor with the supplied feet.
Most common uses are rooms that don’t warm well so you can adjust the temperature level in them without having to affect the rest of the home.
There are two types of vent free heaters, blue flame (or convection heat) and Infrared (or radiant heat). The difference in these types of heat are how the warm.
The Infrared heater warms objects. It doesn’t warm the air like a Blue Flame. It can be put in an area with objects which the heater will heat and then the object will heat the air. Blue Flame warms the air, infrared warms objects, which heat the air.
Note: Units cannot be converted from Propane to Natural Gas and vice versa. They are not designed to be a primary source of heat, as they are designed to work with a furnace.

User questions & answers
Question: | What model external regulator should I use for natural gas hook up |
Answer: | Not sure what you're referring to. The one lb. bottle hangs suspended when connected. I wouldn't recommend getting this model. Get the model MH12C if you can. The regulator broke after a couple months and I couldn't return it. Instead I bought the regulator that was for the MH12C and adapted it to fit the MH15C. Since then it's been working great for a year. I also recommend purchasing the hose adapter so you can run off a 20 lb. bottle. It'll last a lot longer |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can I store the smaller, 1lb propane tanks on my terrace porch, possibly in a box, overall? in cold winters and hot summers |
Answer: | For maximum safety, my recommendation is to store propane containers in a weather protected location, such as garage or shed with some natural ventilation. Propane is a highly flammable liquified petroleum gas that vaporizes and expands many-fold very quickly if released to atmospheric pressure, and will form a highly explosive mixture if released in a confined space without outside ventilation. If then ignited by a small spark such as a light switch, the resulting explosion may be catastrophic. There are on-line photos of boats that have exploded from propane leaks in the confined space of a boat cabin with catastrophic results including death of occupants. The cabin top and sides have literally been blown to pieces in such cases. New, sealed bottles of 1 lb size are reasonably safe, but once opened or partly used it is best to store away from occupied spaces. Although the probability is low, the consequences of failure are unacceptable. 20 lb propane containers should never be stored indoors. Play it extra safe and store propane bottles in a garage or outdoor shed. BJG (PE, ichemical engineer, inactive, retired) |
Question: | can i hook a large propane tank to his |
Answer: | Yes, any size propane tank can be a source for it when plumbed correctly. The simplest way to go is using the F273704 hose directly off most tanks. That hose needs nothing else and goes direct from the tank to the heater. This model heater only accepts high pressure gas thru the "disposable tank" connection, so other hoses with that connection can be used as well as the "filter" F273699. The "filter" is to take out oils coming from most rubbers in hoses where the high pressure "squeezes" the oil out, but the 704 hose is made "oil-free" to avoid that issue. FYI I tried running this off a regulated low pressure source, but with it on "high" the glow was like "low" setting normally (showing a lack of gas coming thru). So if you have a low pressure source, the "Big Buddy" models have a connection point for such thru a quick disconnect using hoses like F271802 or F271803, but not this model (this one needs high pressure gas to get enough thru it's disposable tank port). |
Question: | How long with the heater run on low with a propane small cannister |
Answer: | Best guess is 4-5 hours on low. I sat in a hunting blind for 2.5 hours and the 1lb propane canister was about half empty. |
Question: | Does anyone know or understand how is it this type of propane heater can be used indoors without causing carbon dioxide poisoning |
Answer: | As soon as the weather gets cold, I put my Big Buddy Heater on a stand & use a Mr. Heater 12' hose with regulator running to a 20lb. tank in living room. I use the hose with the low pressure regulator on it & hook it up to the quick connect fitting. I have 2 20lb tanks in mint condition, and rotate them as needed. This will be my 7th winter using it. Old windows & doors let air in and I have a carbon monoxide alarm near by. Also use a leak detector to check all connections after hooking up a full tank. If it's really cold, I'll start it on high for a short time, then run it on medium & it keeps living & dining room warm. Cuts my oil bill down greatly. |

Question: | How well does the thermostat work? Would like to leave this unit on in the garage and maintain a set temperature |
Answer: | Thermostat works well. It's not a set temperature thermostat though. You pick a number or in between spot that feels comfortable and leave it. I never leave it on overnight though. |
Question: | What are the pros and cons of infrared verses convection nat. gas heaters |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can i hook up to my unvented propane log gas heater |
Answer: | Yes, you can use this to hook up your log gas heater. GlobalTowne is an authorized Mr. Heater distributor. |
Question: | Can we use this hook up for propane |
Answer: | Mr. Heater F271239 One-Stop Universal Gas-Appliance Hook-Up Kit is a suave kit designed to give the consumer any possible gas connection, and has several different sized gas fittings. You should be able to connect directly to your propane supply line with ease. |
Question: | my gas heater will light but will only stay lit for a short time. I've cleaned. the apiture. with alcohol. but that doednt seem to help. long term |
Answer: | The oxygen sensor may be turning it off. Make sure there is airflow around the unit. At altitudes of approx. 4500+ it may shut off for much the same reason. Blow out the Aperture with air. There is a little hole down on the gas nozzle for that purpose. Canned air is best. A compressor may break something. I had a friend who just blew it out with his breath and it worked better. Clean the entire unit of dust and debris. Check the gas debris pipe and empty the sediment. Check your bottle, it may be near empty, or the control valve may be partially closed. |
Question: | Is the valve 1/2" FIP to 1/2" flare? Is the connector 1/2" ID? What are the EXACT specifications on each of the adapters? Shocked it sells W/ no info |
Answer: | The description says 3/8 and 3/8 but the one I got was 1/2 x 1/2 with adapters. It says universal but for me probably not since I actually needed 3/8 female and this only comes with 3/8 male so I will have to spend more money to make this work. |
Question: | Can you HANG this from something |
Answer: | YES you can hang this heater. It's been done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZsVX6mh8O4 |
Question: | Does anybody have trouble lighting this heater? Seems I need to hold the ignition button in for a minute and it really hurts my thumb |
Answer: | Hey Spike, I agree with Thomas W. Mine wouldn't start on the first try either. You have to hold the ignition button down, wait a few seconds, then depress again. It's kind of a pain, but it works. A more annoying issue for me was wanting to use it in my golf cart, but with every tiny bump, the safety feature kicked in and off it went. So, it is safer for home use. For the cart, I bought the Coleman Catalytic Heater with the special holder that fits in the cup holders. It's more quiet too. Stay warm! |
Question: | With an adapter hose can it be used with a large propane cylinder |
Answer: | Not a problem. Make a 10"x10" box. Nail 2x6 together in the shape of a U. Then put 3/8" inch plywood on top and bottom (3/8" a must on top). Then make a 2 1/4" hole in the center of the top plywood. Next screw the main heater assembly into the filter with the top plywood in between (the two should come together snug leaving a very small separation which will allow the heater to rotate with no chance of a leak but still be secure). Then attach the hose and tank. This box allows for a large tank to be attached, the heater can rotate and the tipsy problem is gone.. Just remember to turn off the tank first to burn up the gas in the line before turning off the heater. |
Question: | Has anyone used it tent camping? I'm afraid of fire and fumes, but the cub scouts insist in camping in sub freezing temps |
Answer: | I used it last summer (2017), at night We went to bed late around 1:00 am, and usually by 5:00 am the 1lb tank is already empty and it's went the temp is the lowest, I spent about a tank per night, kept our 8 person tent warm, we have ventilation at the top and all the heat went up but I rather have ventilation that non at all, I'll probably wake up at 5 and replace the propane tank. We camped I bigbear, CA and it was cold at night, I might try an electric heater plugged into my Honda but still you have Carbon monoxide coming from the generator. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Where do i buy natural gas for it |
Answer: | You tap into an existing gas line |
Question: | sq ft insulated garage (including garage door). Would this take care of warming up the garage |
Answer: | I believe that it would. I have it in a 200 sq ft room with 13 ft ceilings, the house is 118 yrs old w/no insulation and it works very well. I do have the bigger size in another room.It has 3 burners instead of 2 and you can turn on 1,2 or all 3. It heats 2 rooms I have. |
Question: | Is it possible to use with a thermostat rather than the low and high settings |
Answer: | The heater is not designed to be used with an external thermostat. |
Question: | How are the fumes vented ? I don't understand how you can burn something and not have to worry about carbon monoxide |
Answer: | The fumes are not vented. Natural gas is mostly H₂, gasoline is about 50% carbon, coal is all carbon. So being mostly H₂, the combustion products are mostly H₂O with a little CO₂, not unlike what we breath out. Coal and gasoline will asphyxiate you fairly quickly because of the high carbon content, which must be vented outside. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a gas fireplace, is this line enough NG to run this |
Answer: | Thank you for your inquiry. The natural gas line needs 7 WC of pressure to adequately run this vent free heater. |
Question: | The 20k and 30k both state the same dimensions? I have limited space so are they both the same size or is there a typo on one of them |
Answer: | 20,000 is 20" wide , 28" tall, and like 13" deep with the feet or like 9" without. Their description is of size is crap |
Question: | Can i use this heater at 7000 ft above sea level |
Answer: | i believe the air is thinner that high at sea level and you should be alright but i would put in a carbon monoxide monitor in that room just in case |
Question: | Do these have a thermostate on them ? So they cut off when it gets to a certin temp and cuts back on when it drios below temp |
Answer: | This heater does have a thermostat to control the desired temperature. It does cut in an out when temperatures are reached. |

Question: | Will it accommodate the (slightly taller) 30 lb tank |
Answer: | Not enough room for 30 lb. Can use a 30lb if connected outside of cabinet. |
Question: | how large an area will this heat indoors |
Answer: | My drafty workshop (a converted garage) is 11x22 and needs approximately 10,000 BTUs. A good rule of thumb is 30-60 BTUs per square foot based on average ceilings. Drafty spaces in northern climates would need closer to 60, while my Tennessee shop needs about 40 BTUs per square foot, or about 10,000 BTUs. I have this heater and the max is 18,000 BTUs, which means I almost never run it on full power. An indoor space, well insulated, somewhere near the Mason Dixon Line would need about 40 BTUs per square foot, I'd think, meaning this heater would heat about 450 square feet. Less if you're further north, more if you're further south. It does not have a blower, so a ceiling fan really helps disburse the heat. |
Question: | Pilot Light does not stay lit to turn on, Anyone else have this problem or have a solution? It is new out of the box |
Answer: | after connecting the tank for the first time there will be air in the line, turn the knob to pilot, press the knob in and keep it pressed in for 5 or 10 seconds before pressing the ignitor button and after the pilot lights continue to keep the control knob pressed in for 30 seconds or more before releasing it to allow the air to bleed from the system, the pilot will stay then stay lit and you can turn it on, every time you disconnect the propane tank you have to do this to bleed out the air from the lines. I did the same thing the first time I lit mine, and also remember to keep the control knob pressed in for 5 or 10 seconds every time you light the pilot after lighting it for the first time. its a great heater and works well, to be safe make sure you check for leaks at all connections with 50/50 solution of liquid dish soap and water after turning on gas at tank before you fire it up, by the way, I use mine indoors in a efficiency apartment if the power goes out, just keep 3 ft. of open space in front of heater to be safe, sides, top, and back of heater don't even get warm, had my hands inside back of heater while running on high, tank, hose, and fittings were cold, only thing that was slightly warm to the touch was the upper left corner of the heat shield between the tank and the burners. |
Question: | I have one of these several years old, need a new thermocouple for it do you have those if so what is the cost |
Answer: | Good question! Let me know if you find one. This would be an excellent heater if the manufacturer did not use thermocouples that they know are defective. Why do I say that? Because nearly EVERY review that I have read States the same problem. Now I have a heater sitting out in my garage that will not light! I recommend that any person thinking of purchasing this heater buy a Mr Heater instead. They work! If World Marketing would send me a new thermocouple (that works), I would install it. |
Question: | Where can the refill tanks be purchased |
Answer: | These run on the little tanks that run a camp stove sold at Walmart, Costco or any sporting goods store. I don’t believe you can refill these. |
Question: | Can this heater be used at 4000 meters over sea level, given that this unit shuts off automatically when low oxygen levels are detected |
Answer: | I ended up sending crack the heater because the heater didn’t put out a lot of heat. |
Question: | can I use this while I sleep in a 4 persons tent |
Answer: | Yes |
Question: | Please reveal if you know of adaptor/adaptors needed to mount this to a 5 gallon tank. Not finding it myself. Thanks |
Answer: | I am not aware of any adapter. It seems to only fit the small tanks. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this come with a wall mounting bracket |
Answer: | Yes it does. It is a pretty easy install! |
Question: | Can this heater be used with a thermostat |
Answer: | I think you may have to buy the one that has the thermostat with it. |
Question: | do you sell legs for this |
Answer: | Yes, legs are available from the manufacturer, but these are not included in the box. |
Question: | Does the wall or objects above the heater on a wall get hot |
Answer: | The wall behind? Not at all. I would have proper clearance around this unit. It only seems to get hot to the touch in front where the flames are. But the heat does rise and I use a fan located in the room aimed at the ceiling to circulate. Also no thermostat so it has to be controlled manually. |

User questions & answers
Question: | is an external 2 stage regulator for the 30,000 BTU unit necessary |
Answer: | For propane or natural gas? If you're putting in a new propane tank yourself, then you will have to install one. If you have natural gas, the regulator should already be out by the meter. And if you ALREADY have propane, the regulator is probably outside right where the propane line comes into the house. So, if you're unsure, just check with your supplier or utility company. |
Question: | Do the unit get physically hot to the touch |
Answer: | To my surprise it does not get hot to touch Not even the top |
Question: | It says no electricity needed on product information. And in other information it says 120 volts . What gives? Does it come with a plug in attached |
Answer: | it does come with a cord to plug into a 120v wall outlet. the cord only operates the blower fan, it will work and heat without being plugged in if you want to use the fan it will need plugged in. hope that helps |
Question: | Can the unit be mounted to the ceiling facing straight down or does it have to be mounted upright to a wall |
Answer: | Upright on the wall. |
