User questions & answers
Question: | Does it fit FSG50248 model |
Answer: | Yes, it does. I have the same model and it fits fine. The magnesium versions are different model numbers, this one is aluminum which will last much longer. |
Question: | Any tricks for removal old anode on a.o.smith natural gas 50 gallon? i tried breaker bar and it won't move. factory tighten so hard. any tips |
Answer: | Probably I just got lucky but I purchased the tools that fit the job: a socket that fit the Anode head, a matching extension that was long enough but not too long, a ratchet matching the extension (it all has been a size bigger in size than I had at home). Then I (ab)used the extension, set it on top of the Anode head and gave it some good whacks with a hammer. Then I (ab)used the socket by putting it onto the extension, setting socket plus extension onto the Anode head and again gave it some good whack with a hammer. Lastly, I put an enforcer pipe of 2 to 3 feet onto the handle of the ratchet and pushed with my body weight (6'4", 295 lbs) in a rythmic motion into it (push, release, push, release,...) after about 4 or 5 pushes there came the long awaited cracking sound and the Anode came lose. Do not use a 2 pound hammer and do not whack so hard that the heater deforms, then the Anode is stuck for good and the pressure vessel might be damaged and could explode !! |
Question: | What is the diameter of the rod |
Answer: | 3/4" diameter for the aluminum rod. Aluminium is 1.9 cm ;-). Magnesium rods are 0.84" diameter. Caution, a magnesium rod will leave a lot of sediment. |
Question: | I have an AO Smith AVG50 Promax Plus gas water heater. Is this anode compatible |
Answer: | I'm not a plumber. I did change the anode rod in my water heater based on what I saw on "Ask This Old House". All sacrificial anode rods require the same socket or wrench for replacement (1 1/16 inch). There are only 2 things to consider in replacing the rod: 1. Make sure new rod isn't too long for your heater. 2. Male sure you have enough room around the heater (particularly above) to fit new rod in. If there is a problem with getting new rod to go into tank, look at a 3-section rod that will bend around and go in the hole. Remember to watch "Ask This Old House", you'll learn a lot. |

Question: | What is the warranty on this product |
Answer: | Per A O Smith: A.O. Smith warrants this Powered Anode System product (“part”) against defects in materials or workmanship for one year from date of purchase, as provided in this warranty when installed in a singlefamily residence in the United States or Canada. If this part is installed in any location other than a singlefamily residence, the warranty period is reduced to 90 days. Question: | Will this work on my a.o. smith, 30 gallon, model #e6-30h45dv water heater |
Answer: | What I do know is that it works on my Smith, 40 gallon water heater perfectly. |
Question: | Installed it Dec 2019, solid green light, flushed the heater yesterday and got bucket full of rusty water/black powder. Anybody else got the same |
Answer: | I am assuming you flushed water heater first? We have really hard water where I live so we run softened water through our water heater. My neighbor also has an iron filter on his softner to help with stains and corrosion. I just flushed mine minutes ago to give a good review. I got a burst of red water measuring about 2 to 3 foot in my clear 8 foot hose. Thats it. Nothing else but clear. |
Question: | Anyone out this in a state xe proline water heater? if not taking the plunge and will post a review |
Answer: | If the water heater is equipped with a 3/4" sacrificial anode (standard), this unit will fit. The manufacturer says it will protect up to a 50 gallon unit. With my experience in cathodic protection I wouldn't install one in a water heater over a year or two old. Hint - when installing the anode rod, use a SMALL amount of non-teflon pipe thread compound (such as Rectorseal #5) on the male pipe threads. Teflon tape may prevent good electrical contact and will leak. |
