13 best 50 gallon electric water heater
A 50-gallon electric water heater is a household appliance designed to provide hot water for various domestic purposes, such as bathing, cooking, and cleaning. Here's some information about it:
Capacity: A 50-gallon electric water heater, as the name suggests, has a storage capacity of 50 gallons (approximately 189 liters) of hot water. This capacity is suitable for households with moderate to high hot water demands.
Electric Heating Element: Unlike gas water heaters that use a burner, electric water heaters have one or more electric heating elements inside the tank. These elements heat the water when needed.
Tank Design: Electric water heaters consist of a large insulated tank to store and keep the hot water at the desired temperature until it's used. The tank is typically made of steel with a glass or porcelain lining to prevent corrosion.
Thermostat: A built-in thermostat allows you to set and control the water temperature. Most electric water heaters have adjustable thermostats to meet your specific hot water needs.
Energy Efficiency: Electric water heaters are known for their energy efficiency, as they can maintain the set temperature without constant heating. Some models also come with advanced insulation to minimize heat loss.
Installation: Installing a 50-gallon electric water heater typically requires a dedicated electrical circuit, proper ventilation, and a suitable location. It's essential to follow manufacturer instructions and local building codes during installation.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as flushing the tank to remove sediment buildup and checking the heating elements, can help prolong the lifespan of your water heater.
Warranty: Manufacturers often provide warranties for electric water heaters, which can vary in duration. Be sure to register your unit and understand the terms of the warranty.
Cost: The cost of a 50-gallon electric water heater can vary based on factors like brand, features, and energy efficiency. While they may have a higher upfront cost compared to smaller units, they provide a significant amount of hot water.
Safety Features: Modern electric water heaters come with safety features like pressure relief valves and temperature controls to prevent overheating and pressure buildup.
Water Temperature Recovery: The time it takes for a 50-gallon electric water heater to recover and heat the incoming cold water can vary based on its heating capacity. It's important to choose a unit that can meet your household's peak hot water demands.
In conclusion, a 50-gallon electric water heater is a reliable and efficient appliance for providing hot water in residential settings. It offers a significant capacity to meet the needs of a household with moderate to high hot water demand and can be a cost-effective and energy-efficient choice when properly maintained.

Product description
This Smart Technology electric tankless water heater is configured as a "whole home" model for climates where incoming water temperature is 67°F and above. This model is well suited for heating up to 2-Gallon per minute, which is the equivalent of one shower head (with a 1.5 gpm flow) and one sink with a low inlet water temperature of 67°F and an output setting of 105°F. Digital Temperature Control allows you to set your temperature in increments of 1 Degree. This model can also be used in colder climates as a Point of Use for a sink or other low flow application. All tankless water heaters are sized based on flow rate and temperature rise, and there is a direct relationship between the two. So if used in a cold area requiring a high temperature rise, it will be more limited in the amount of fixtures (gallons per minute) it can heat at one time compared to a warmer climate. When sized properly this water heater will provide endless hot water and only consume the energy needed, giving the user complete control. Prior to purchase and installation please verify this model is the right size for the expected demand and electrical requirements. The ECO 11 requires a minimum 125 amp electrical panel for installation with 60 amp double pole breaker connected to set of #6 awg wire. Plumbing connections are 1/2" compression fitting with the option of 1/2" NPT adapter included. For additional assistance please feel free to contact our support center at 877-474-6473.
NOTE : 11Kw at 220 is equal to 13kw at 240. .Activation Flow : 0.3 GPM

User questions & answers
Question: | Ours has only been in service for less than a year - will not adjust temperature to anything above 85 Deg. F. What do you think is the problem ? kds |
Answer: | My only guess is that the rheostat (variable resistor) that the temperature adjustment knob is attached to may be faulty. If that isn't it then I don't know. Sorry. |
Question: | The warrenty says that this unit must be installed by a licensed electrician and plumber, for them to honor the "life time warrenty." why |
Answer: | Hello Bob, The reason is the same as why an innumerable number of gadgets around the world have that little "warranty void if removed" label. Because getting inside of one requires a certain level of training and expertise. Same with this unit. GadgetsGo is an authorized Ecosmart dealer. Kind regards,HenryGadgetsGo |
Question: | My house is wired 110V. What additional items do I need to purchase for the conversion |
Answer: | Just to expand slightly on prior answers, normally a residential service feed is 240 volts between the two incoming hot legs. There is also a neutral leg, which (hopefully) has zero potential with reference to ground. The voltage between either one of the hot legs and the neutral leg is 120 volts. The 120 volt circuits in your house are connected to one or the other of the two hot legs, and only one. An attempt is made to assign circuits to the two hot legs in a way that will roughly balance the load between them. The other side of a 120 volt circuit is connected to the neutral leg. There is additionally a safety ground run with the circuit, which also ties into the panel. Certain devices require more power (work product of current and voltage) than is practical to deliver using a 120 volt circuit. Common examples are your clothes dryer, and your electric stove. These devices are powered by both hot legs, with a difference in potential of 240 volts. This water heater is also such a device.STRONG BUT FRIENDLY WARNING: If you did not already know this, please don't make wiring this water heater your learning opportunity with electricity. Hire someone who knows how to do it right. Cutting corners, especially with higher currents and voltages, can lead to equipment damage, fire, and electrocution. Electricity is not magic, and you can certainly learn how to do many common wiring tasks safely on your own, but today is not the day to begin that journey. You need properly sized components, properly installed, and connected to an adequate service. Also, if you really, really foul up, you could conceivably wind up making that morning shower more energizing than you ever imagined, if you get what I mean. So newly aspiring electricians should go fix their grandmother's favorite table lamp instead. Once they have that working they can use it to to start reading books about electricity, residential wiring, and eventually, books about this stuff: http://amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_8?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=nec+code&sprefix=nec+code%2Caps%2C164 . Of course, you still have to know not to nick conductors when you strip them, and other trade craft like that ; ) . Like almost everything in life that is fun, electricity will hurt you. Sort of like all those people you dated for a while, and then wished later you had never met. |
Question: | what amp breaker is required |
Answer: | The National Electrical Code requires conductors and overcurrent protection to be sized at 100% of the manufacturer's branch circuit recommendation for tankless electric water heaters. A 60 amp breaker is the same price as a 40 or 50, it is the wire that costs more. #6 AWG wire is required for a 60 amp circuit. If you undersize the wire it could overheat and catch fire. Protect your family and follow the manufacturer's sizing for this, or any other, electrical device. Your family's lives are worth the extra money. |

3 Smart Steps for Endless Hot Water
Step 1: Determining your average inlet water temperature is important, this allows you to determine how well your unit will perform in your desired location. A lower inlet water temperature will require a higher kilowatt product.
Step 2: Next you will determine how many applications your unit can run simultaneously at your chosen location inlet water temperature. Tankless electric water heaters are sized for maximum simultaneous use, not maximum fixtures in your home.
Step 3: Determining specifications and electrical infrastructure is important because without the correct infrastructure your unit may not fit into your breaker panel.

User questions & answers
Question: | How many breakers or amps does it use |
Answer: | In USA: It probably is served by one pair of breakers. Breakers in homes do not run 220 Volts. For a 220V circuit, home breakers are typically two paired 110 V breakers, one breaker for one leg & one breaker for the other leg of your electric service, connected together so that you must turn them both on or off together. If your home gets 220 V service (check; it may well get 240V service, a difference which is commonly ignored) divide the watts by the volts to get the amps. You may get better specs if you can find this heater on the manufacturer's site or Lowes. The amps of the breaker pair must be more than the amps that the device pulls, but should not be very much more than that. Going from 40 gallon heater to 50 gallon heater, does not tell you much about the breaker; you have to know the amps that the heater draws (or watts & calculate amps). The 40 gallon may pull more amps than the 50 gallon heater, as it may be designed to heat the water faster. Since you want the amps, I would not answer your question as giving "don't know" blocks real answers -- but a reply had already been given. |
Question: | Is this 110 or 220v |
Answer: | 220v |
Question: | Does it have to be installed in a heated room |
Answer: | Ours is in an unheated storage room (small) in an unheated garage. No problem to 20 below 0. |
Question: | Is it actually 24 wide by 24 tall by 50 deep? Ive got an existing lowboy and not any extra space |
Answer: | The tank is approximately 50 inches tall and 24 inches in diameter with a 50-gallon tank capacity |

User questions & answers
Question: | Can this directly replace a 40 gal tank heater with a 30A double pole breaker? What are power requrements |
Answer: | No it can't. RTEX-24 requires 3 sets of wire and ground, and it needs 3x 40amp breaker. That's a total of 120amps |
Question: | Can you use the 10/3 for one of the cicuits |
Answer: | No. It requires three legs of 8-2. |
Question: | Can the unit operate as a rtex-18 if i only hook up 2 of the elements? because i only need the 18 specs as of now but would like the option to upgrade |
Answer: | Actually you can do this but you must be careful on which circuits are connected. Rheem says the elements are activated from right to left as power is required. The right most element connection also provides power to the control so this must always be connected. If the very left element is left disconnected, you will only get 2/3 of the rated power on a 3 element unit. |
Question: | Why are 2 answers for the breaker requirements. Is it 3 double 40 or 3 double 60 amp |
Answer: | If the unit draws 40 amp. you need a 2 pole 40 amp breaker 2 #8 wires good for 40 amp and 1 # 10 wire for a bond. Now if the unit draws 60 amps you need 2 # 6's good for 65 amps. A 2 pole 60 amp breaker and 1 # 8 for a bond( ground wire). |

User questions & answers
Question: | whats the SEER Rating |
Answer: | "SEER" is an energy efficiency rating that use primarily in rating air conditioning units. The higher the rating the more efficient is the unit will be. |
Question: | We have a marathon water heater model # mx 85245. the element wore out. the element # is sgbi tc 2457. where can we find one |
Answer: | 1) Call a hardware store or electrical shop to see if they have that specified element. 2) Turn off electricity to heater. Find a place that carries water heat elements. Drain tank, remove element (or both elements) that has failed. Take to store with you to be sure what they have matches what you need. |
Question: | Has anyone experienced a rash of leaks down line from this water heater after installation? 2 , Eccess expansion/contraction |
Answer: | OK, I see the post are old, but I will add some info. When water is heated, you have to have room for expansion. If you are on city water and have a check valve, the pressure can build greatly, So you need a expansion tank. If you are on a well, you most likely won't need one, as your well tank will handle the job. I live in a city and never had check valves till a few years ago, when they widened the road, they moved all the water meters and added check valves. Many people started having problems with leaks, pop off valves opening after they added check valves! I installed a expansion tank, fixed the problems and never had any other problems. Before I did this, I put a pressure gauge on the system, city pressure 45psi, after taking a shower/bath or using hot water for washing machine, I noticed over about a 20 minute time frame, pressure going to just a tad over 100psi. So yes, having large pressure swings is going to happen without a expansion tank. You can get a pressure gauge that screws on the garden hose, set the gauge outside the window and see if this is what's happening. |
Question: | my rheem marathon 50 gal water heater is leaking in the upper element. How do I fix, any links you know of |
Answer: | If it is leaking around the threads of the upper element, you could DRAIN the tank (there should be an anti siphon valve installed), and remove the element and, using Teflon pipe sealing tape, wrap the thread (at least 3 full layers) and reinstall. If the tank continues to leak, you should have the tank replaced under warranty. Good Luck.DON'T forget to turn off the electricity!!If you are inexperienced or uncomfortable ding any of this, CALL A PLUMBER. |

Question: | does it have an electronic pilot light |
Answer: | Good Day, Dennis! Our Eccotemp i12-NG is a fully automated tankless water heater. There is no Pilot light, but the front panel display would tell you everything from ignition to full operation. Our i12 is a flow activated water heater.Thank you!Eccotemp Systems LLC |
Question: | Does it run on propane? It came up in my search for propane tankless water heaters but it's not labled as such |
Answer: | Yes, this uses propane and is labeled as such. LP means liquid propane. And the item description says, "Rated at an impressive 3 GPM, the Eccotemp I12-LP tankless water heater is a liquid Propane fired..."GadgetsGo is an Authorized Eccotemp Dealer.Kind Regards,RossGadgetsGo |
Question: | How do these hook up without a hot water tank |
Answer: | this takes the place of a hot water tank. there are connections for the water and gas and one plug to an outlet. it heats the water as it passes through the unit. |
Question: | What model is recommended for whole house |
Answer: | Hello. I'm sure any one would work, but I'd go with this larger capacity model. After having in for awhile, this one can output enough for 2 showers at full capacity, but one seems to be just a little restricted. If we installed some different shower heads I'm sure there wouldn't be any issues. For the minimal increase in cost, I believe the additional capacity is worth it. You may not always need it, but it's nice to know it's there if you do. |
Question: | I live in lower michigan and what model is recommended for whole house |
Answer: | Hi Sue Ann. Please refer to the sizing information in the second pic in Amazon's item description. It's very important to read up on tankless and how it works before purchasing. Key points to know: Your max. simultaneous hot water flow rate when everyone is using hot water. Whether you have enough amperage in your electrical panel. Most homes in USA require an upgrade to the electrical service which can cost several hundred dollars.Kind Regards,RossGadgetsGo |
Question: | Why are these so much less expensive than other name brand tankless heaters |
Answer: | Could it be the others are over priced or not produced in the volume these are? |
Question: | Even with 200 amp. My lights flicker with the water is in use. Any one having the same issue and how was the issue resolved? Thanks |
Answer: | After having an electrician inspect the installation and unit, I was told the Eco 36 really should only be installed on a 300 amp service or above. It is a great unit, but for most homes trying to run it on a 200 amp service, it is too much of a draw on the electrical. It will cause flickering lights and will become a problem when your timing a full house with showers, laundry, dishwashing, etc. I love the unit, but my service is 200 amp, so I'll be removing this and installing a Rheem Electric Hybrid tank water heater. |

LED Display Controls
Turn off/on, adjust your desired temperature, measure GPM and more!
Energy Conscious
Uses virtually no energy while not in use. True on demand technology with low gas consumption.
Low Power Draw
While in use, the i12 uses around 2 amps. While idle it uses about 2 watts.

Question: | Can you use this at 6000 feet elevation |
Answer: | Yes, The Marey gas tankless water heaters are rated up to 6,000 ft elevation. Please be aware as with any gas appliance you will loose 4% of your heat for every 1,000 ft in elevation. SO you may not get the full heating capacity at the 6,000 ft elevation. GlobalTowne is an Authorized Bosch Distributor. |
Question: | What size is the water hose connections |
Answer: | I have one I use a 1/2 hose at the I also use in my RV camper so I hooked it up to the 3/8 with the. Water from my camper it works ok off the 12v pump |
Question: | Can you hook up to another hose instead of shower |
Answer: | Hello. Yes, you can use a hose instead of a shower hose and head. Just note that a showerhead water flow rate is about 1.5 GPM. This unit heats water by 32°F at a flow rate of 1.5 GPM (and a proportionately lower temperature rise with a higher flow rate, and higher temp. rise with lower flow rate). All tankless water heaters operate on the same principle. Therefore, if you use a hose that has a higher GPM water flow rate, then your temperature rise will be lower. Use simple math to determine if the heater will produce at least 105°F, which is what many people feel is a hot water temperature. Feel free to ask us any other questions. Question: | Can it be run inside a cabin |
Answer: | No, the Marey portable is an outdoor unit. You would want something like the Marey Power Gas 5L or 10L unit and they are indoor unit and get vented to the outside. GlobalTowne is an authorized Marey distributor. |
