14 best pex tubing for radiant heat
PEX tubing for radiant heat is a popular choice for heating systems in residential and commercial buildings. PEX stands for cross-linked polyethylene, and it is used for the distribution of heated water in underfloor or wall heating systems. Here's what you need to know about PEX tubing for radiant heat:
Material: PEX tubing is made from a flexible and durable plastic material, cross-linked polyethylene. This material is resistant to corrosion and scale buildup, making it suitable for use with hot water in heating systems.
Flexibility: PEX tubing is highly flexible and can easily be bent and routed through floors, walls, and ceilings. This flexibility makes installation easier, especially in tight or complex spaces.
Compatibility: PEX tubing is compatible with a variety of heating sources, including traditional boilers, hydronic systems, and even some renewable energy sources like solar panels. It can efficiently transfer heat from the heat source to the floor or wall, providing consistent and even heating.
Sizes: PEX tubing comes in different sizes, typically ranging from 3/8 inch to 1 inch in diameter. The choice of size depends on the specific heating requirements of the space and the design of the radiant heating system.
Color Coding: PEX tubing is often color-coded for easy identification. Red PEX tubing is typically used for hot water lines, while blue is used for cold water lines. This color-coding helps plumbers and installers during the installation process.
Installation: PEX tubing can be installed using various methods, including the "staple-up" method (attaching tubing to the underside of the floor), the "sandwich" method (embedding tubing between layers of subfloor), or the "plate" method (using aluminum heat transfer plates to enhance heat distribution). The installation method chosen depends on the specific project requirements.
Manifolds: PEX tubing systems often use manifolds to control the flow of heated water to different areas or zones within a building. Manifolds help distribute the heat evenly and allow for individual temperature control in each zone.
Expansion and Contraction: PEX tubing can expand and contract with temperature changes without risking damage or leaks. This flexibility is essential for maintaining the integrity of the system over time.
Durability: PEX tubing is known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, making it a long-lasting solution for radiant heating systems.
Insulation: Depending on the installation location, it may be necessary to insulate PEX tubing to maximize heat transfer efficiency and reduce heat loss.
PEX tubing for radiant heat is a versatile and efficient choice for providing comfortable and even heating in homes, offices, and other spaces. Proper installation and sizing are crucial to ensure the system's effectiveness and longevity. It is essential to follow local building codes and manufacturer guidelines when installing PEX tubing for radiant heat.

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the difference between this plate and the HP-4 model |
Answer: | Hi Robbie, These are our Omega style Heat Plates for PEX tubing. The HP-4 are our standard U-channel plates; while these plates are considered our C-channel plates. The channel where the PEX lays in are grooved a little further in so the PEX tubing snaps into the channel. Other than the way the channel is formed, the two are very similar. Alvin PEX Superstore |
Question: | Will this cut into the tubing as it thermally expands and contracts? Any tricks to avoid/minimize the chances of that |
Answer: | Doesn't seem too. Just don't get them to close to the bends at the ends. Use clamps on the pipe to hold the loops. This was the 3rd year in use, no problems. |
Question: | Is the width 4.38 on each side or total width |
Answer: | 4.38 inches is the total width. |
Question: | Are these available for 3/4” Peckinpah pipe |
Answer: | Hi, Thank you for the inquiry. However, we do not carry these plates in any other size other than 1/2" for 1/2" PEX piping. Please feel free to let us know if you have any other questions. Thank you. Alvin 1-909-606-0988 PEX Superstore |

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the difference between pex A,pex B,pex C |
Answer: | All of the PEX we carry is manufactured in the PEX-B method. Also, I want you to know that it is not so much a indicator of quality or "grade" of the PEX; instead it represents the process of production each is made with. They are differentiated by how the manufacturing process of cross linking the molecules of polyethylene rather than it being graded or rated as A, B and C grade. PEX A method was developed in the 1960's using peroxide method to cross link the molecules, PEX B was developed in the 1970's using silane method and PEX C was developed in the 1980's using electrobeam method. The best way to tell if it is a good quality product is the NSF certification and testing that it pass. Here in North America, NSF is the testing agency and they test them to ASTM standards. If you see NSF certification on the PEX to ASTM F 876/877 then it is a quality product. Also, it must hold at least a 25 year warranty. Needless to say, our PEX meets those standards. PEX A, B and C are tested the same way and comply to the same ASTM standards. Meaning, the same temperature pressure rating will be on PEX A, B and C. So it all boils down to price and contractor preference. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or if you need anything else. Thank you. PEXCompany Direct: 1-909-606-0988 |
Question: | how flexible is this. I want to use it for in-wall heat and run it through the studs, down the wall height and back up then through the next stud |
Answer: | It's made to run under floors between joist you won't get much heat out of it in the wall |
Question: | What is the manufacturers recommendation for insulating foam? Does it require foam under the entire slab, or only the perimeter |
Answer: | Hi density foam boards are the best but can be pricy. Insulation sheets are used. Check with your city what R-value your area requires and by accordingly. As to if you need foam in the entire slab or just the perimeter. Under normal circumstances about 99.5% of the time , the whole slab needs to be insulated. It is a very rare and you have to have a radiant heting designer if the insulation is just in the perimeter. You are creating a huge heat sink that will take long for your area to heat up and you have a huge heat sink that might cause overheating of your area that you cannot control. I strongly suggest caution if you are going with the perimeter route. |
Question: | Is this pex-a, pex-b, or pex-c |
Answer: | All of our PEX for Radiant Heating is PEX-C with Oxygen Barrier formulation. Jim, Sales Mgr. J&R Enterprises |

User questions & answers
Question: | how to install |
Answer: | There are too many ways to install heat transfer plates for radiant heating depending on your situation and application, consult your radiant heating contractor on what is best for your application. I will discuss the most common 2 methods for you to have an idea/guide.1. Staple UpTubing is attached to the underside of the existing subfloor. Aluminum plates can be used to spread the heat evenly under the subfloor. Insulation is placed in the joist space beneath the tubing. A 2 inch air space is usually left between the insulation and the bottom of the subfloor. If aluminum plates are used which significantly cover the underside of the subfloor, the insulation may be pushed up tight against the plates. Obviously, care must be taken when nailing any floor covering from above. Wood screws are typically used to attach the plate to the underside of the subfloor but nail gun works fine as well.2. Subfloor PlatesAluminum plates supported by wood or plastic spacers contain channels which accept tubing. These plates spread the heat uniformaly beneath the finished floor. Hardwood floors can be nailed directly to the subfloor plates or carpet and pad placed over the plates. It is also possible to nail a second subfloor over the plates for a smoother finish for vinyl areas. A cement board is used when tile or stone is to be installed. Particle board is not recommended as a subfloor. |
Question: | can this product be stappled up |
Answer: | Yes it can. I useed my 18 gauge stapler with 1/2" staples and made quick work of the project. I put staples every few inches to get a good heat transfer from the pannel to my sub-floor. If there is a space btween your pannel and the floor your wasring heat energy. |
Question: | Is a 3/4 inch curve in these plates available |
Answer: | Unfortunately no. |
Question: | how wide are these |
Answer: | 4-3/8" exactly. They are made with 5" plates and after the machine makes the curve, it will be 4-3/8" wide. Hope that is helpful |
