12 best electric heating systems

Electric heating systems are a type of heating mechanism that uses electrical energy to generate heat and warm a space. These systems fall under the category of Rough Plumbing in the Tools Home Improvement domain, often involving pipe fittings, pipes, and related accessories.

Key features and aspects of electric heating systems include:

  1. Heating Elements: Electric heating systems utilize heating elements that convert electrical energy into heat. Common heating elements include electric resistance wires or coils.

  2. Types of Electric Heating Systems:

    • Radiant Heating: This system uses electric cables or heating mats installed beneath flooring, in walls, or in ceilings to radiate heat and warm the space.
    • Baseboard Heaters: Electric baseboard heaters are long, narrow units installed along the baseboards of walls. They use convection to circulate warm air in a room.
    • Electric Radiators: Electric radiators are standalone heating units that use electric heating elements to heat oil or a similar medium, which then radiates heat into the surrounding space.
    • Fan-forced Heaters: These heaters use a fan to distribute warm air into the room. They are typically compact and versatile for various applications.
    • Electric Furnaces: Similar to traditional furnaces, electric furnaces use heating elements to warm air, which is then distributed throughout the space via a system of ducts.
  3. Thermostats and Controls: Electric heating systems are often equipped with thermostats and control units that allow users to set and regulate the desired temperature in different areas of the building.

  4. Energy Efficiency: Modern electric heating systems strive to be energy-efficient, using advanced technologies and insulation to minimize energy consumption and reduce heating costs.

  5. Installation and Maintenance: Installing electric heating systems may involve the placement of heating elements, wiring, and proper insulation. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, is important to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

  6. Safety Features: Electric heating systems incorporate safety features like overheat protection, tip-over switches, and automatic shut-off to prevent accidents and ensure safe operation.

  7. Integration with Pipes and Fittings: Electric heating systems may utilize pipes and fittings for certain applications, especially in radiant heating systems where heating cables or mats are installed within the structure.

Electric heating systems are a popular choice due to their ease of installation, versatility, and ability to provide consistent heating. They are commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial settings to maintain a comfortable indoor environment during colder periods.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be installed in a shower? Waterproof
Answer: Hello, yes the LuxHeat system is rated for wet areas, however as with all heating for wet areas, the splice (joint between element/burgandy wire and cold lead/black wire), must be outside the shower. In the case of the mat, you can simply remove the tape holding the first 2-3 feet of wire and place the splice outside the shower by about 2 feet.
Question: What is the actual length of the mesh? I'm finding 2 different answers
Answer: Hello, the 20sqft mat is 12.2ft long by 20inches wide.
Question: Does this need to be installed the mesh in a bed of mortar first or can I apply my mortar as I tile and do it all in one step
Answer: Hello, you can apply your mortar as you tile, however if you choose this method to install you must make special effort to see that all wires are well covered with mortar. If a heating wire is not covered with mortar there will be no heatsink and the wire will run to hot. As long as the wires are well covered it'll be fine.

User questions & answers

Question: Could this be used in a concrete slab? (Considering it as a primary heating source
Answer: The heating system can be installed on top of a concrete slab. We recommend using some type of insulation, such as CeraZorb Thermal Break Underlayment which we sell through our website, on top of the concrete slab to help reduce heat loss through the concrete. Our heating system is used to warm the floor and will warm the room. With 3" spacing the system supplies 12 watts/ square foot.
Question: Any recommended method to run the cord up stairs (only 2 stairs)? Also, will this work with 20amps or does it need 30amps because it's 240V
Answer: The wire has a minimum bend radius of 1 inch, therefore you can't put the wire at a 90 degree angle up the stairs. The wire must always be embedded in a cement based mortar. The 300 sq. ft. 240V cable system is 15 amps. Please follow local codes, but a 20 Amp breaker should be sufficient.
Question: Can this be used under solid oak hardwood flooring
Answer: The floor heating system should not be used under a wood floor that will be nailed or screwed down. Regardless of the type of flooring, the floor warming system needs to be embedded in a cement based mortar. Please check with flooring manufacturer to verify flooring can be installed over an electric floor warming system.
Question: How many linear feet is there to make up the 300 sq ft
Answer: The 300 sq. ft. 240V cable system consists of two spools totaling 1200 LINEAR FT. The two spools are connected in Parallel at the thermostat.

Product features

Floor Heating Cable

The Electric Floor Heating Cable consists of a spool of heating cable.  Simply run the cable 3" apart across the area to heat using the cable guides to secure to the floor running the cold lead up the wall to the electrical box.  These heating systems are ideal for odd shaped areas or to heat around objects.  The RED HEATING ELEMENT CAN NOT BE CUT, so be sure to accurately measure the space you are heating.

Programmable Thermostat with Sensor

Honeywell / Aube model # TH115-AF-240S

The programmable floor sensing thermostat and floor sensor is designed to work with electric floor heating systems. It gives you the ability to accurately control the floor temperature for maximum comfort and energy savings. The thermostat features high-tech precision with straight forward, user friendly interface and contemporary design with backlit display. This floor sensing thermostat is digital, programmable, and includes the floor sensor. The thermostat is factory pre-programmed with a 7 day schedule that can be adjusted. This thermostat is 240 volt, rated for 16 amps, easily switching between F and C temperature scales.

THERMOSTAT FEATURES

  • AF mode-controls ambient temperature with floor temperature limitation
  • F mode controls the floor temperature using an external temperature sensor
  • Two temperature sensors-one in floor, one in thermostat for accuracy and security

Installation Monitor

The Installation Monitor can help give you peace of mind while installing the floor warming system.  Connect the system leads to the monitor prior to installation.  The monitor will "scream" a warning in the event the heating element is cut or damaged allowing you to make any necessary repairs before the heating system is embedded in mortar.  If the alarm sounds, stop work and consult the operation manual.  We still recommend checking the ohms of the floor heating system with a multimeter before, during, and after installation.

  • Red light and alarm indicates lead wires have come loose from the terminals or damage has occurred to the heating system
  • A white light indicates the monitor is operating
  • Can monitor up to 3 systems at one time when they are temporarily connected in series

CABLE GUIDES

Designed for fast installation of the the heating cable, simply loop the floor heating cable around the guide as you lay the cable system across the subfloor.

Secure the cable guides according to the planned layout using screws, nails, adhesive or glue approved for use with the given subfloor.  The heating element should be spaced 3" apart across the area to be heated.  Cable guides should be run perpendicular to heating cables.  The heating cables should have a minimum distance of 2" from walls and objects. Spacing between cable guides should not exceed 36" in distance.  Secure the heating element to cable guides by wrapping the wire around the stud.  Maintain moderate tension of cable throughout installation.  Do not twist heating element and keep the minimum bending radius of the cable to 1".

Cable guides are 12" long and can be cut to length. Includes enough cable guides for cable heating system.

User questions & answers

Question: when applying on a wooden subfloor, does a membrane have to laid first? if so, what kind
Answer: A membrane is not required, but if desired there are no restrictions to what kind to use. As long as the Mat is fully embedded in Thinset and/or mortar, it will work great.
Question: do i need to purchase anything else besides what comes in this package? is this the complete heating kit
Answer: This comes with the heating mat, thermostat, floor sensor and installation manual.
Question: How many electric heating mats can I put together
Answer: The thermostats can handle 15 amps each. You could connect more mats to a larger circuit with a relay or contactor also but for usage with the thermostat that comes with these using 240V and 15 Amps max it would be 240V * 15A = 3600 watts total. These mats produce 12 watts per sqft so 3600 watts/12 watts per sqft = 300 square feet on 240V. It would be half (150 sqft) of that if you use our 120V mats.
Question: What's the best underlay for this (over concrete flooring)? tyvm
Answer: for concrete sub floors you don't really need an underlayment since these system are already going to be embedded. You can use an uncoupling membrane over it if you really want an underlayment.

User questions & answers

Question: Do I need to buy a thermostat to control it? Or can it be connected to a switch? Just on and off
Answer: You need a thermostat to install it properly - SAFELY. The mats are standard 110 / 120 volt hot & neutral. You could wire it to a switch and the mats will not care. The Tstat's most important role is turning the mats OFF, not on. Without a stat the mats are just going to keep making heat until you turn them off, maybe after the house burns down, maybe not. No switch, timer, photocell...whatever you employ to control the mats is going to take the place of a thermostat for a proper and safe installation. Anything else would be reckless.
Question: What underlayment is recommended for this heating film
Answer: I laid it right on the tile. Works great.
Question: Can these be cut and wired in a series to one thermostat
Answer: yes
Question: Planning 1 mat 1.5x5 = 90 watts. Can I use this w/o thermostat? Just on a gfci protected circuit w/ off/on switch
Answer: Yes. I did this and it works just fine. I could not find an inexpensive thermostat that would operate properly on such a low load / resistance so I just hard wired with a cut off switch. No problems so far and installed about 6 months?

Product features

Touchscreen Programmable Thermostat

The M429-TS is a sleek, touchscreen floor-warming, programmable thermostat that includes the safety of built-in GFCI protection with the accuracy of a standard floor sensor and several programming modes, schedules and events.

Monitoring Your Installation

The Heatwave Premium Kit comes with a floor alarm that once installed, monitors the heating element for damage. Floor alarm (sometimes known as a "screamer") is a battery-operated device that monitors for breaks in continuity along the entire floor heating cable and if the circuit is broken, the device "screams," allowing for damage to be assessed and proper remedies to be taken.

Trowel

Using a metal trowel can be risky if the heating element accidentally gets knicked or cut. Ideally, using a plastic trowel is the best bet, however they can be hard to find. We've included this plastic trowel to take away the concerns about knicks/damage, while making the solution easy and convenient.

Easy-to-use Digital Multimeter

With this easy-to-use digital multimeter, checking the pre, during, and post condition of the heating element is easy and fast. No more wondering which meter will work or give the appropriate readings. Follow the instructions in the Heatwave Manual to check resistance, ground, and the sensor easily and efficiently.

Single-Gang Electrical Box

No more wondering about what size box to use for the thermostat. We include a single-gang, old-work style electrical box with every Heatwave Premium Kit.

Extra Mounting Hardware

Sometimes when installing the Heatwave system, it would be nice to have clips to be able to accommodate special installations outside of the mat configuration or when using the free-roll cable. These clip kits with nails allow the installer to make custom runs of cable to go around obstacles, or go into hard to reach places.

Be sure to get the right size!

Heatwave comes in various sizes to accommodate differing size spaces. It is important to accurately measure the space you intend heat. Avoid placing the heating cable under vanities, within 6-inches of the toilet gasket and under other permanent fixtures in the space. It is acceptable to place Heatwave in a shower, provided that is still fully embedded in a thinset/or Mortar.

Be aware the heating cable cannot be cut or shortened in anyway.

User questions & answers

Question: I need 24" x 60".. Can I route the last one feet wire along the side to increase the width to 24" and keep the length to
Answer: You can loosen the heating element from the mesh and put along side the mat keeping it at 3" spacing.
Question: I am planning to install wooden floor (hardwood or laminate) in my bathroom. Can I use this system to heat wooden floors or is is for tiles only
Answer: The floor heating system can be installed under laminate or engineered wood floors, but not a traditional wood floor in which you are nailing down the floor because of the risk of putting a nail through the wire. Regardless of the flooring type, the floor heating system must be completely embedded in a polymer modified cement based mortar.
Question: I have a concrete slab that I would like to add electric floor heating and tile over it. How do I avoid moisture build up with this product
Answer: You need to seal your concrete floor! Theres a great product on amazon here that gets down into concrete and seals up everything--it even pushes dirt and moisture out as its sealing! and you just spray it on. Its advertised to block radon, but its all the same different of sealing concrete (will make moisture barrier, block radon, etc.) I think its just called "Radonseal" and its in a big bucket; you'll also need a 1 gallon sprayer, they run about ten bucks. I would seal it before installing this product, as you'll get a lot more out of it. You'll still want to cover it with something so it can distribute its heat (like put in thinset or something like that) it doesn't have to be fancy tile. I did mine in thinset and threw a rug over it to make a warm place for my pets while i'm at work.
Question: Can this be used when installing a drop-in tub to keep bath water warm
Answer: No, but Kohler has a tub that has a built in heating element on the portion where you lean up against. I don't know how well it would heat the water, but I bet it would be nice.

Floor Heating Mat

The Electric Floor Heating Mat consists of a mat with the cable heating elements pre-spaced 3" within the mat. Simply unroll the floor heating mat with the cold lead running up the wall to the electrical box. These heating systems are ideal for rectangular or square areas with right angles. You can manipulate the mat to fit the desired heating area by using the turning techniques shown below. The white fiberglass mesh may be cut to flip and turn the mat. The RED HEATING ELEMENT CAN NOT BE CUT, so be sure to accurately measure the space you are heating.

Programmable Thermostat with Sensor

The programmable floor sensing thermostat with floor sensor is designed to work with electric floor heating systems. This thermostat is 120 volts, rated for 16 amps, easily switching between F and C temperature scales.

THERMOSTAT FEATURES

  • AF mode-controls ambient temperature with floor temperature limitation
  • A mode controls the ambient air temperature

ADHESIVE BACKED MAT

This heating mat has double sided tape to offer an adhesive backing that make installation a breeze. Simply fit the mat to your floor, then peal of the tape and adhere to the floor. This greatly reduces the installation time and gets you on your way to enjoying your heated floors.

User questions & answers

Question: Can I use this with a little space heater in a greenhouse (6'X4') to keep it from freezing at night when I'm starting plants in the winter
Answer: I don't know why it wouldn't work. I am using it connected to a heating pad on my propane tank regulator to keep it from freezing up. Had it on for 2 months and is working fine. It was 1 degree last night and the heaters and stove worked just fine.
Question: Is this item a two prong or
Answer: It is 3 prong so it provides a ground for whatever is plugged into it. It will also take a 2 prong plug, but should be plugged into a grounded outlet, or you can use an adapter.
Question: I plugged the thermostat into electrical box and the light did not glow. Does the light only come on when the thermostat is activated by temperature
Answer: I found that when using the plug in thermostat that it does not come on, or turn off at the temperatures stated in the instructions. I comes on at a lower temperature than 38 degrees. When it is on, the light in the thermostat lights up. I think the instructions that come with the unit could be a little clearer. There is no way to adjust the temperature range. I use the thermostat in my RV trailer during the winter to turn on a heat lamp to keep a critical area above freezing. Hope this helps
Question: Is the power indicater light suppose to come on when unit is plugged in or only when temperature goes below
Answer: Robert,According to tech support, the indicator light will only come on when power is being supplied to the cable by the thermostat at 38 degrees or less.So in simple terms only when it goes below 38.Hope this helped.Have a great day!Chris B
