12 best heat cables for roofs and gutters
Heat cables for roofs and gutters are specialized electrical heating systems designed to prevent ice and snow buildup on roofs, in gutters, and along the edges of roofs. These cables are commonly used in cold climates to prevent ice dams and icicles from forming, which can cause damage to roofs and gutters. Here's what you need to know about heat cables for roofs and gutters:
Purpose: The primary purpose of heat cables is to melt snow and ice on roofs and in gutters. They are often used to prevent the formation of ice dams, which occur when snow on a roof melts and then refreezes at the eaves. This can lead to water backup and leaks into the home.
Installation: Heat cables are typically installed along the eaves, in gutters, and downspouts. They may also be installed in roof valleys and on flat roofs. The installation process involves attaching the cables to the roof or gutter using clips or hangers. Some systems are self-regulating, meaning they adjust their heat output based on temperature, while others have thermostats for manual control.
Types of Heat Cables:
- Self-Regulating Cables: These cables automatically adjust their heat output based on the surrounding temperature. They produce more heat when it's colder and less heat when it's warmer, which makes them energy-efficient.
- Constant Wattage Cables: These cables provide a consistent amount of heat regardless of the temperature. They are typically controlled by a thermostat to prevent overheating.
Energy Efficiency: Self-regulating cables are often considered more energy-efficient because they use less electricity when less heat is needed. This can result in cost savings over time.
Maintenance: Heat cables require regular maintenance to ensure they are functioning correctly. This includes inspecting for damage, making sure the cables are clear of debris, and testing the system periodically.
Safety: It's essential to follow safety guidelines when installing and using heat cables. Overloading the electrical circuit or using damaged cables can lead to fire hazards.
Roof and Gutter Protection: By preventing the formation of ice dams and icicles, heat cables can extend the life of your roof and gutters. They can also reduce the risk of water damage to your home's interior.
Professional Installation: Many homeowners opt to have heat cables professionally installed to ensure they are placed correctly and safely. This can help prevent damage to the roof and ensure the system works effectively.
Heat cables for roofs and gutters are valuable tools for maintaining the integrity of your home in cold climates. They can help prevent costly damage caused by ice and snow accumulation, making them a useful addition to a home's winter weather preparedness.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the on/off manual? Can it operate in any low temp |
Answer: | Yes, the heat output is even across the entire length of heat tape. The quality of the cable is top of the industry with 16 AWG wires conducting the heat across the entire length of the heated portion of the cable. The self-regulation will not interfere with performance when it comes to heat distribution either, in fact, it improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the cable. This cable has been tested and has passed as ETL listed. |
Question: | Curious to know if I put this in my walkway..would it melt snow |
Answer: | This heat cable is 'on' while plugged in. There are thermostatic outlets (ThermoCube) that can be used to turn our cable on at 35 degrees and off at 50 degrees. Many of our customers buy those. Our cable will NOT MELT or damage PVC gutters. You will need to install the cable in a standard serpentine, or zig-zag pattern to get ice dam prevention. Heating gutters alone will not reduce the likelihood or severity of ice dams in any way. |
Question: | Can it be cut to length? I only need it to be about 4 foot long |
Answer: | You need to crank the set screws down very tightly. You should expect them to dimple or dent the standing seam. You may want to visit the manufacturers website for further details. |
Question: | I'm looking at using something like this for a chicken watering system. Could everything, minus the plug head, be completely submerged in a pipe |
Answer: | I have never used these in a vertical application. I have found the S-5 company to be very helpful you can contact them at their web site s-5.com |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will these clips handle coax ok |
Answer: | I don't sell them so I don't know if you can buy it any other way. The wheels can pop out in heavy jobs. I found them and popped them back in. I think the rake works well and has paid for itself with all the snow we have been getting. |
Question: | what is the surface finish |
Answer: | I do not have solar panels on my roof, and my thought would to let the snow melt by it self, but if I were going to use a snow rake, it would be this one. I found an article on the web that referenced this snow rake for snow removal on solar panels. http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-10156471-54.html If you were to use it you would have to be very, very careful to be sure that the bottom of the blade was lowered so the sharp corners of the rake do not touch the panels. Also, if you received heavy resistance when pulling the rake down, I would stop and lift it off rather than putting extra possible pressure on the panels. Good luck. |
Question: | Would these work on a wood shaker roof |
Answer: | Elisabeth I purchased this rake some time ago... I would not personally use it on any material softer than a roof... It is made of aluminum with a strong edge. You should be able to modify the rake by putting a some type of plastic type adhesive tape along the edge to protect the cloth material. |
Question: | I had but nothing but trouble the aluminum clips are way too soft to bite into the shingles.anyone who have found a alternate method please |
Answer: | Output at 50˚F (10˚C) : 8W per foot; Output at 32˚F (0˚C) : 12.8W per foot. Yes, this heating cable can be buried to keep the ground from freezing |
Question: | Can this be used to push snow off the roof from a higher floor window, or is it only for pulling snow off |
Answer: | 20A current is enough to run the heating cable。 If you are a flat hypolon roofing, you can use hot melt glue to secure the cable clip to the roof,This is a roofing scheme that a lot of people use。 |
Question: | Can I purchase just the rake section seperately ? Don't the wheels pop out easily and get lost |
Answer: | Considering it's designed for rooftops and gutters, I don't know if it could withstand the pressure of a car(s) driving over it without damaging it. But, if a car will NEVER drive over it, give it a go! However, I say that knowing I won't be losing the money if something goes wrong. |
Question: | Can it be used on solar panels |
Answer: | Yes, You need insulation at the bottom of the deck to avoid too much heat loss |
Question: | Has anyone used this or any other rake to remove snow from a year round sunbrella type(cloth material |
Answer: | 1200W, 240 ft. so 5W per foot. |

Garelick Aluminum Snow Roof Rake - 21'
This unique snow flake roller design is easier to use because the blade never touches the roof's surface, preventing damage, while also making it easier to roll back up the roof.
By using the Garelick Roof Snow Rake to safely remove snow from roofs, homeowners can prevent the damage of ice dams. Ice dams cause water to back up under shingles, ruining roofs, ceilings and walls. Removing snow also relieves unnecessary weight on the terrace, which may damage the eaves.

WHAT IS IT:
RoofMate Self-Regulating Heating Cable is specifically designed for residential roofing and gutters to prevent damage caused by ice formations, such as ice dams. It is direct-to-consumer Swiss manufactured with 100% quality control. This means we test every single cable made. Manufactured by GammaSwiss – 30 years of success in electric heating cables used in industry all over the world, now available to you for your home.
RoofMate comes with a 5-year Warranty and is ETL Certified. Each cable measures 13x6mm, consists of durable PVC inner insulation and a continuous ground braid. This guarantees maximum safety and reliability. The illuminated plug helps to easily see when your cable is functioning. Each cable has 10-ft cold lead, plus the self-regulating length listed.
INSTALLATION:
RoofMate cables can be overlapped during installation and operation, won't overheat, and can be used on all roofing materials except wood. Please read the installation manual and follow all instructions. Using roof clips: Do not use nails, adhesives or sealants to attach clips to the cable. Clips are not included because the type of clip you'll use depends on the type of roof you have. Be sure to use clips specific to your type of roof, e.g metal, asphalt, rubber, etc. We recommend checking with your local hardware store, the internet or asking a professional installer what they suggest.
HOW DOES IT WORK:
'Self-regulating' means the cable automatically adjusts its heat output according to the outside temperature: colder outside=hotter cable, less cold outside=less hot cable. This way the cable only uses as much energy as needed to melt snow and ice. If only a certain part of the cable is getting snowed on, then only that part will get warmer. The entire cable adjusts independently. No portion of it will get hotter than it needs to be.
- SWISS MANUFACTURED commercial grade with 100% Quality Control; ETL certified; 30 YEARS of successful experience in electric heating cables
- REDUCE ENERGY COSTS: Cables automatically adjust heat output to ambient temperature; Operates in temperatures down to negative 40 degrees
- PROTECT YOUR HOME: Our product will give you peace of mind knowing that you and your home are PROTECTED from any potential damage caused by ice formations such as ice dams and icicles on roof and gutters; Not for use with extension cord; Circuit requirements: must be 120V AC, grounded, has a GFCI system, and rated at least 20A
- HOW TO USE: Use on roof, gutters and drainage pipes, on any roof and gutters except wood (pvc, asphalt, rubber, metal, flat roof, etc. ok.) CAN BE OVERLAPPED during installation and operation, cable WON’T OVERHEAT. 10-foot cold lead on cable. Clips for specific types of roofs not included. Please scroll down to read the full description for more information
- The purpose of the cable is to create pathways through ice and snow for the melted water to escape, rather than collecting and re-freezing.

The nail free design does not require any additional tools due to its innovative “toothy pincher” design. The Grip Clip teeth grab the underside of the roofing shingle, producing a strong grip. No additional roofing tools are needed, making for a safer installation process. To re-position a Grip Clip, simply lift the edge of the shingle and slide the Grip Clip up to release the teeth. A common issue with ice dam cable installations is cable ends making contact and shorting out. Grip clips prevent this from happening by remaining secure and lasting indefinitely. Grip Clip is the only clip that allows for a building code compliant application of self-regulating heat cables near the center of the roof valley, where you want them. Using traditional clips requires that fasteners are driven through the valley flashing, which violates most building codes. Grip Clips can also be used on other roofing cable applications such as seasonal holiday string lights. Grip Clips can be used on a wide variety of roofing materials which range in thickness from 1/8” to 3/4”, including cedar shakes, Davinci shakes/slate and all other types of synthetic roofing. Grip Clip is a Minnesota-based company with expert support staff available to help solve your roof ice dam problems.
Product description
We have actual humans available by phone. Heat cable is technical stuff and it’s great to have solid advice on how to install it for your ice dam prevention project. We are the only heat cable seller on Amazon who is a simple phone call away 877-387-4218. Eat that impersonal, off shore competitors! Our cables are bad ass and so is our customer service. We’re not sure if we can swear on Amazon, but we just did. Radiant Solutions Company is a direct-to-consumer manufacturer with over 25 years in the business of ice dam prevention. Unlike cheap cables, Heat Tape Pro can be overlapped during installation, can be installed on flat roofs, metal roofs and rubber roofs, will not light leaves on fire under any circumstance and operates effectively when it’s 15 degrees or colder outside. Oh, and Heat Tape Pro is self-regulating, meaning it ‘asks’ for more energy as it gets colder outside and less energy when it’s warmer. The entire length of the cable is temperature sensitive such that colder areas demand more power than warmer areas. Hence the term “Self-Regulating”. Heat Tape Pro is serious stuff and holding it in your hand will tell you as much. It’s a worry-free, long term solution to your ice dam problems. Our cable creates melted pathways through ice or snow on your roof that allow water to escape instead of backing up through your roof system. Problem solved. Heat Tape Pro can be used for roof and gutter de-icing as well as pipe freeze protection. It’s suitable on pipes as small as ½” in diameter and can be used on both metal and plastic pipes. Be sure to order recommended installation accessories including Roof Clips and Downspout Hangers if needed.
- USES: For use on flat roofs, metal roofs, asphalt roofs, rubber roofs and more.
- HEAVY DUTY: Heat Tape Pro is a commercial-grade self-regulating heat cable that substantially outperforms cheap cables such as EasyHeat and FrostKing.
- WARRANTY: Best-in-Industry 10 year warranty - ETL Listed - WILL NOT short or burnout if cable is overlapped and can be used on flat roofs and metal roofs, unlike cheap cables.

- Suitable for use on plastic and metal water pipes( including inlet pipe, drain pipe, sewer, palm tree frost protection etc). Industrial grade self regulating heating cable. The cable output will adjust automatically based on the ambient temperature at each point along the cable. No worry about the overheat risk. More Safe. Can be used by straight, spiral and overlap. More functional.
- Smart plug with indication light to show you whether the cable is working or not. Protect pipes up to 2 1/2” in diameter. For a better freeze protection, at least 1/2 inch thick or thicker insulation material is recommended, especially for extremely cold weather. If the ambient temperature is lower than -20°F(-29°C), please use 1” thick insulation material. ETL approved. 50 degrees F for pipe freeze protection.3 ft 18/3 cold lead with grounded plug.
- Roof deicing application: HEATIT JHSF1 was designed to prevent the ice dam formation not to melt the ice dams which were already formed. Please turn on the cable at the beginning of snowing. Can be used on flat roofs, metal roofs, asphalt roofs, rubber roofs, slate roofs, stone roofs, metal roofs, ceramic roofs, composite (tar and gravel) roofs and so on. Rated 10W/ft at 32°F (0°C) for roof deicing. For roof deicing application, you may need to buy clips and hangers separately.
- Designed to maintain water temperature in the supply piping system, reducing or eliminating the delay in obtaining hot water at each fixture. You don’t need to run showers or sinks for long periods of time to draw new hot water into the unit, which is a significant waste of water. Simply wrap the self regulating heating cable around your hot water lines within the house to provide you with instant hot water. It is an energy efficient and economical alternative to common re-circulation systems.
- Testing the cable before the installation. Uncoil the cable, plug in the heating cable. Normally you can feel the slight warm on the heating cable in few minutes.
