6 best compound mitres
Compound miters, often associated with miter saws and carpentry, are a crucial aspect of woodworking and home improvement projects. A compound miter refers to a cut that combines both a miter angle (the angle at which the material is cut horizontally) and a bevel angle (the angle at which the material is cut vertically). This type of cut allows you to create complex angles and joints for various applications.
Here are some key points about compound miters:
Miter Saws: Compound miters are commonly made using a miter saw, which is a power tool designed specifically for making accurate crosscuts and miter cuts in a variety of materials, including wood, plastic, and even metal. Miter saws come in different types, such as basic miter saws, compound miter saws, and sliding compound miter saws.
Miter Angle: The miter angle is the horizontal angle at which the material is cut. It allows you to create angled joints, such as when two pieces of trim meet in a corner.
Bevel Angle: The bevel angle is the vertical angle at which the material is cut. This is useful for creating beveled edges or for joining pieces at angles other than 90 degrees.
Compound Miters: To make a compound miter cut, you need to adjust both the miter angle and the bevel angle on your miter saw. This is particularly useful when working on projects that involve sloping or angled surfaces, like crown molding or frames for pictures or mirrors.
Precision: Compound miters require precision, as even small errors in angle adjustments can lead to ill-fitting joints. It's important to measure and mark your materials accurately and use a miter saw with proper adjustments and locking mechanisms.
Safety: When using power tools like miter saws, safety precautions are essential. Always wear appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses and hearing protection, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for safe operation.
Applications: Compound miters are commonly used in carpentry, cabinetry, furniture making, and trim work. They are essential for creating seamless and professional-looking joints in woodworking projects.
In summary, compound miters are a crucial technique in woodworking and home improvement, allowing you to create precise angled cuts for various applications.Miter saws are the primary tools used to make these cuts, and understanding how to adjust both the miter and bevel angles is essential for achieving accurate results in your projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the current model that is shipping type 1 or type 20. If you look up the parts diagram the type 20 has a different slide mechanism part number |
Answer: | I bought a new one today from a lumberyard and it is a Type 1. (says right on the sticker on the motor) Not sure if that means the slide mechanism is better or worse than the Type 20. I would assume it was made in 2014 because there is a "Dewalt use only" tag on the box which starts with 2014. Not sure if a "fresher" saw is a Type 20 |
Question: | Can xps be added, i know dewalt makes a kit to add it to some saws, but this model was not listed |
Answer: | mmToolparts actually sells a kit (3 proprietary DeWalt parts + their wiring harness) for less than $70. They have videos on their website that show how to install the parts on DW716, DWS779, and DWS782 saws. You will need some additional tools (torx screw drivers or torx bits, wire strippers/cutter/crimper) and somewhat mechanically inclined. Just google "DWS779 xps light kit" and they should be the top result. This might be an easier option versus going to a DeWalt service center in the post pandemic world. |
Question: | Does this miter saw come with a laser or any guiding system |
Answer: | It does not come with any laser for guidance. You may find my answer a bit crude, I've been using miter saws for many years and the best guiding system I found to work is my/your eyes. Having lasers or no lasers you still need to use your eyes to get the work piece spot on near the cutoff point. Hope this helps! |
Question: | Is there an LED cut line |
Answer: | You can add the LED light to this saw. Not a laser but a shadow light that show exactly where the saw blade will cut. I just did it last night. Parts can be had for about $70. This basically turns it into a model 780 which is much more expensive. Pretty simple to add. |

User questions & answers
Question: | How well was this product packaged? Did anyone experience damage during shipping? I don't usually buy heavy items like this on-line. Thanks |
Answer: | The saw was sufficiently packaged to protect it during shipping. I got mine in perfect condition. The manufacturer's packaging took care of most of the protection, and I'm pretty sure it was over-boxed as well. Hope this helps, and enjoy the saw. I haven't had a ton of use from mine yet, but have done several smaller projects with just a few cuts and have been pleased with the performance (it's not a cheap toy) and ease of handling. The size and weight make it easy to get it out and start cutting, then put away quickly when the job is done. |
Question: | What is the difference between the dcs361b and the dcs361m |
Answer: | The M1 is the European version |
Question: | I see the vertical max is 3 5/8, but could this cut 4x4 lumber |
Answer: | No not with one cut. You would have to turn the 4x4 over. Blade is a 7 1/4" diameter, same as a hand held circular saw. From the tip of the teeth to the edge of the washer (at center of blade) I get 2 7/8". |
Question: | What's the cross cut capacity if we use the entire sliding action |
Answer: | On a straight 90, I can cut 8" wide boards. On a 45, I can cut right around 5-7/8". This saw was a great addition for me, as I'm constantly working in places away from a simple power source (my generator is a beast and not easy to transport). It cuts cleanly, hasn't bogged down yet (even on wet 2x6 treated), and is super light and easy to transport. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will a 8 inch blade fit |
Answer: | Yes. You can, the saw will cut alot larger than a 2x6 laying flat. |
Question: | Would it work on a electricity of 220 v |
Answer: | Much quieter. Best saw I have ever owned! |
Question: | Will this saw cut a 1×12 with one pass at a 45 deg angl |
Answer: | Smooth. It slides twice on two sets of bars. I have used their 10" saw for years. I bought this for trim work but it will cut 2x all day. I haven't used the 10" since I bought this one. You will love it. |
Question: | Does it come with the extension arms |
Answer: | Yes you can. Use a 1/4” Masonite or plywood to bump out the fence to take care of the 1/4”. The smaller blade won’t cut all the way through if you don’t. Works fine for me. And yes it’s easier and cheaper to get the standard 7 1/4” blades than the special 7 1/2”s from Makita. |

Question: | in my country, we use 220v, can I plug this item to my current circuit |
Answer: | No. 120 volts AC single phase |
Question: | As of Mar 2018, Does it still cut an arc when sliding, as opposed to a straight line |
Answer: | Mine does not. Be careful with damaged packaging and saw impact |
Question: | Does the laser show both sides of the blade, that is is it a dual laser? Also does the laser have a separate switch or is it centrifical |
Answer: | The laser is on one line only and it can be switched left or right of the blade. There is a separate ON/OFF switch for the laser |
Question: | will it cut 4in x 4 in timber |
Answer: | Yes, if you make 2 cuts. The only saw I know of that will do it in 1 cut is a Chop saw with a 12" blade. Or a Radial arm saw. But it needs a 12' blade too. |
