13 best plunge saws

Plunge saws, also known as track saws, are versatile power tools commonly used in woodworking and construction. They are closely related to circular saws and are a part of the category of power tools and hand tools for home improvement. Here's what you need to know about plunge saws:

  1. Cutting Accuracy: Plunge saws are designed for precision cutting. They excel at making straight, clean, and accurate cuts in various materials, including wood, plywood, MDF, and even some metals. The primary advantage of plunge saws over traditional circular saws is their ability to make plunge cuts, which start in the middle of the material.

  2. Track System: Plunge saws typically come with a guide rail or track system. This track serves as a straightedge that ensures precise, straight cuts. The saw's base has a groove that fits onto the track, allowing you to guide the saw along the desired cutting line.

  3. Versatility: Plunge saws are versatile tools that can perform various types of cuts, including rip cuts, crosscuts, bevel cuts, and plunge cuts. They are suitable for a wide range of applications, from cutting sheets of plywood to trimming door bottoms.

  4. Depth Adjustment: Plunge saws have a depth adjustment feature that allows you to set the cutting depth according to your needs. This feature is particularly useful when making partial cuts or grooves.

  5. Dust Extraction: Many plunge saws are equipped with dust extraction systems that help keep the work area clean and improve visibility by collecting sawdust and debris as you cut.

  6. Safety: Plunge saws often include safety features such as blade guards and safety switches to prevent accidental starts. Always follow safety guidelines and wear appropriate protective gear when using power tools.

  7. Portability: Plunge saws are relatively lightweight and easy to transport, making them suitable for both on-site and workshop use.

  8. Blade Options: You can choose from various types of blades for plunge saws, depending on the material you're cutting. Different tooth configurations and blade materials are available for cutting wood, metal, laminate, and other materials.

  9. Ease of Use: Plunge saws are user-friendly, even for beginners. The track system helps guide the saw along a straight path, reducing the risk of errors.

  10. Price Range: Plunge saws are available in a range of price points, from affordable models for hobbyists to high-end, professional-grade options with advanced features.

In summary, plunge saws are powerful and versatile tools that offer precise cutting capabilities, making them essential for woodworking, carpentry, and other construction tasks. Their ability to make accurate plunge cuts and their compatibility with guide rails make them valuable additions to the toolkit of both DIY enthusiasts and professional tradespeople.

User questions & answers

Question: What vac adapter should be used for dust extraction
Answer: I don't remember the box but each toothbrush is individually wrapped.
Question: Country of origin
Answer: They are regular toothbrushes and you can use everyday. They are intended for regular brushing. I think you may have gotten an incorrect impression from the description. They are simply toothbrushes, individually wrapped. The fact that they are disposable really doesn't add to the description. All toothbrushes are disposable. I like them because they are individually wrapped and I can use a fresh one every two weeks. You can use them at home, as I do. They are convenient for travel because they are individually wrapped. However, they are just regular toothbrushes.
Question: What exactly is in the kit for the spx01ptj for $478? 2 or 4 batteries? A 55" track? A charger? If I want 110" of track, what else do I need to buy
Answer: It was just all plain plastic wrapping without anything on it so cannot say.
Question: Does this come with the 2 makita promotions? promotion 1.) 2x extra batteries for a total of 4 and promotion 2.) a free 55" track
Answer: Normal toothbrush size

Question: can I cut an arc shape in a piece of sheet metal
Answer: I just purchased the Makita track saw kit from "Amazon Prime" and it was delivered today. The extra batteries from the Makita promotion were Not Included. I thought the item was being supplied by Amazon, but it actually was supplied by Find it at the Bay. I've contacted Find it at the Bay to ask why the Makita promotion (valid through July 31st, 2019 according to Makita) was not included... no answer yet. Today in an online chat with Amazon, I was told that this seller is perhaps "not participating" in the Makita promotion that Home Depot, Acme Tools and every other seller seems to be participating in. If I can't resolve this issue, I will be returning the whole package and buying it somewhere that is participating with the Makita Factory promotion for the 2 free 18v batteries.

WORX WX523L 20V 3-3/8" Max Lithium-Ion Plunge Circular Saw

WORX

Based on 411 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Traditional circular saws are bulky and unwieldy. They usually have a cord to get in the way, and if you don’t know what you’re doing, they’re hard to control. Meet the Worxsaw. This 3-3/8” Compact Circular Saw is perfect for beginner DIY-ers that are ready to step up to intermediate projects, or serious woodworkers that just want an extra, grab-n-go saw for quick rip and plunge cuts. It comes with a 1.5Ah battery and 5-hour charger, a 24T carbide-tipped blade, a hex key to switch out that blade, a vacuum adapter, and a parallel guide, so you’ve got everything you need to get going right out of the box. With a no-load speed of 2300 rpm, it can achieve the speeds of much larger saws because the thinner kerf of the 3-3/8” blade puts less strain on the motor (as compared to a full-size 7”+ blade). That also means the motor will last longer than larger saws. It’s only 4.4 lbs, so you can take it anywhere, store it anywhere. The grip with integrated safety trigger is well-balanced, for excellent control. The left-side blade design makes it so that you can see exactly where it is that you’re cutting, instead of measuring and guessing. And maybe best of all, you only need one hand to operate it. Keep the awkward full-size saw in the shop, when you need a no-muss, no-fuss circ saw on-site, grab a Worxsaw.

  • [IDEAL FOR CUTTING SHEET GOODS] A modern saw for modern woodworking and construction. Just grab the Worxsaw and get ripping and plunging
  • [SLIM DESIGN] Lightweight and easy to operate—there’s no cord to get tangled up in or double-back on
  • [DO IT ALL WITH THE SAME BATTERY] Worx Power Share is compatible with all Worx 20v and 40v tools, outdoor power and lifestyle products
  • [QUICK DEPTH ADJUSTMENTS] The lever on the outside of the housing lets you go down to 1-1/16”, perfect for 1” lumber
  • [FULL METAL GUARD] Even though it’s small, this circ saw is built to last with quality components and expert engineering
  • [EASY BLADE CHANGE] The spindle lock makes for quick and safe blade changes, just grab the included hex key, remove the battery, press the spindle lock button—that’s pretty much it
  • [BUILT-IN DUST PORT] Hook up your favorite dust vac and clean the air and your workspace of dust and debris while you work

User questions & answers

Question: May I can cut polycarbonate hurricane cover
Answer: Thank you for your question. It comes with 1 24 Teeth Carbide Tipped Blade.
Question: Has anyone cut 3/8" acrylic with this blade? The specs suggest it should be ok
Answer: After using this saw to install paneling and cedar sheets in large walk-in closets for over a year, I could finish small jobs with battery received with saw. However, I chose to upgrade to the larger 4.0 Ah battery. I do not like the added weight, however, I have doubled the amount of work completed, before recharging! Note: A clean sharp blade also helps extend battery performance.
Question: Will this fit on a dewalt track saw
Answer: When it comes to cutting, the blade determines the material your WorxSaw can tackle. Included, you’ll receive a carbide-tipped wood cutting blade, but you can customize to the job at hand by picking a blade to fit your needs. The WorxSaw can use any 3-3/8” blade with a 19/32” arbor.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this 240v? For Singapore
Answer: No. 120 volt, 60 cycles.
Question: Include the 55 inch track (rail
Answer: You can get it without the track. If 55 inch is too long, purchase the bare saw and use the savings to purchase their 39 inch track or Festool's 32 inch track. For smaller projects 55 inch is awkward to work with.
Question: How has it stood the test of time? Still a clear choice over the Festool
Answer: I've not used the festool, but held it many times. This saw is the equaL Had mine for 3 years now. Nothing wrong with the Festool, but a cult following that allows for a greatly inflated price. i chose not to play
Question: Can I use it as a regular circular saw? Thanks in advance
Answer: Yes. But that's an "expensive" circular saw. Moreover, it wouldn't be using it to it's best advantage as what it's made for - riding in the track (the track usually cost additional OR you have to buy an additional 55" track to add to the 1 track they sell you so that you can cut full sheets of plywood). The benefit of using "track saws" is that when they are riding in the rail guides they are "captured" and don't veer off the cut line. As I posted in previously -if you buy the Makita plunge saw - get additional blades for general purpose use or ripping because it comes with a fine tooth blade which is basically only good for 3/4" or so plywood or wood and you'll burn up the Makita motor (like I did!!!!). The Makita is allegedly the most powerful of the tracksaws @ 12 amp (the others are 10 amps). However, my circular saw is 15 amps. These "tracksaws" or "plunge saws" are good for their limited use - but that use is great depending on what you're making. I would buy a cheap circular saw for general circular saw use (ie. a Skil) and keep the plunge saws for "fine" cutting.

User questions & answers

Question: How can i get it sooner
Answer: 6 1/2 inches
Question: Can I cut into tightly wound rolls of laminated plastic film (3 ply structures with adhesive in between) with this tool
Answer: I think it would work with the only difference being 2.0mm vs 2.2mm kerf width. If the two plates thickness are the same, using a 2.0 mm kerf blade would move your cut line 0.1mm further away from the rail rubber splinter guard.
Question: What is the weight of just the saw
Answer: Not sure what your hurricane covers for but it should easily cut any plastics I’ve used it to cut fiberglass
Question: Can it make clean cuts in laminate flooring? It will work for this type of floor
Answer: I've cut 1/4" acrylic with it. One pass. And smooth the edge with a router. Might have to do 2 passes or go slow for 3/8".

User questions & answers

Question: How well does this perform bevel cuts at 45 degrees
Answer: I haven’t tried this because it’s not super easy to “zero out” back to 90.. but I would trust it over any free handed circular saw.
Question: Does the track come with the saw or the project table top? Or do you need to purchase separately
Answer: To purchase the Kreg Plunge Saw with the track you will need to purchase the Kreg Adaptive Cutting System Saw + Guide Track Kit or the Kreg Adaptive Cutting System Master Kit.
Question: Can this saw be used without the track, just using a straight edge
Answer: Hello, The Plunge Saw is designed to be used with the Adaptive Cutting System 62" Guide Track. While it is possible to cut without the track, Kreg recommends always using the saw and track together for all cuts. Thank You, Billy H
Question: Will it work with all kreg tracks
Answer: The Kreg Adaptive Cutting System Plunge Saw is designed to only ride directly on the Kreg Adaptive Cutting System 62" Guide Track.
