12 best hobby scroll saw

Hobby Scroll Saw

1. Introduction A scroll saw is a small electric or pedal-operated saw used to cut intricate curves in wood, metal, or other materials. Unlike most other saws, the scroll saw's blade can be removed and threaded through a pre-drilled starting hole, allowing for interior cutouts without an entry slot. The fineness of its blade allows it to cut more delicately than a power jigsaw, and more easily than a hand coping saw.

2. Features and Parts of a Scroll Saw

  • Throat: The distance from the back of the blade to the rear frame of the saw. This measurement gives an idea of how large a piece of wood the saw can accommodate.

  • Blade: Scroll saw blades come in various sizes and tooth patterns to match the specific cutting requirement. There are plain end blades and pin end blades. The type of blade determines the type of cut (e.g., intricate, fast, or smooth).

  • Speed Control: Many scroll saws have variable speed controls, allowing the user to adjust the blade's speed based on the material being cut and the intricacy of the design.

  • Table: The flat surface where the workpiece is laid. Some tables can tilt, allowing for angled cuts.

3. Uses of Scroll Saws

  • Crafting: Many hobbyists use scroll saws for crafting decorations, intricate designs, jigsaw puzzles, and more.

  • Inlays: Scroll saws can be used to cut precise inlays in woodworking projects.

  • Marquetry: The art of creating decorative designs and pictures by inlaying pieces of different materials into a wood veneer.

  • Fretwork: Decorative designs, typically geometric or representative shapes, cut into or onto a wooden surface.

4. Safety Tips

  • Blade Safety: Always ensure the machine is turned off and unplugged when changing the blade.

  • Hold-Down Foot: Use the hold-down foot to keep the material in place, preventing it from jumping or bouncing during the cutting process.

  • Eye Protection: Always wear safety goggles when using the scroll saw to protect your eyes from sawdust or any broken blade fragments.

  • Dust Extraction: Some scroll saws come with a dust port, which can be connected to a vacuum to keep the work area clean.

5. Brands and Manufacturers There are numerous companies that manufacture scroll saws, with each offering different features and specifications catering to varying needs and budgets. Notable names include Dewalt, Dremel, and Delta, among others.

6. Maintenance Regular maintenance is crucial to ensure the longevity and safe operation of a scroll saw:

  • Blade Care: Replace blades as they dull. A sharp blade ensures cleaner cuts and reduces the chances of the material catching or the blade binding.

  • Dust Management: Regularly clean the saw, especially around the moving parts, to prevent dust buildup which can affect the tool's performance.

  • Lubrication: Periodically lubricate the moving parts, according to the manufacturer's instructions, to ensure smooth operation.

In conclusion, the scroll saw is an indispensable tool for hobbyists and craftsmen looking to make intricate cuts and designs. Its precision and versatility make it a favorite among woodworkers, especially those involved in detailed work or crafting.Proper use, safety precautions, and regular maintenance will ensure the tool provides years of reliable service.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this fit a craftsman scroll saw
Answer: It's a 5-year warranty
Question: can I use these blades to fit a dremel scroll saw
Answer: I think it can be removed but there are much better ways to sand an inside radius. Oscillating spindle sander maybe? You can find steel city ones for around 600.00 and they are the exact same machine as jet(1100.00 plus) with a grey paintjob. I just bought one from Woodworkers supply for 600.00 but I think they have sold all the ones they had.I can verify it is the exact same as the jet with a side by side comparison( I work at Woodworkers Supply) Great machine just dont set on its side to transport or the oil bath will empty itself on to what ever is underneath it. Dont ask how I know this DOH!!!
Question: Does this Fit Dremel 571-5? If not what blade will fit
Answer: I've used it for some limited metal work on steel, aluminum and brass. --mostly rounding corners, and deburring.

The blade is the single most important component of a scroll saw! One or two common blades will not be enough for a novice, much less the accomplished scroller.

All the carbon steel wire product produced in the U.S. today either comes from an open hearth or electric furnaces. The typical USA Acid Bessemer Process is what produces the superior quality grades of steel. Virtually all scroll saw and similar blades are manufactured from a non-resulphurized high carbon steel.

User questions & answers

Question: Is the pinless adapter upgraded in this model
Answer: Yes
Question: What’s the difference between this and the
Answer: The difference is toolless or tooled blade changes. That's the only difference I found in the 2 units.
Question: What blades are you all using
Answer: I use spiral blades which, unlike regular flat blades, you can cut by pushing and pulling your piece being cut.
Question: I am new to scroll saws so have to ask. Is it worth the $40 difference in price for the 3921 over the 3920 and why
Answer: this model(3921) replaces the 3920, they added a few features and the pinless clamps to the mix. the price difference is for the design changes and the extra pieces they add. 3921 is better than the 3920 when you count in the extra features.
Question: does it come with sand paper
Answer: Ours didn't. But just cut a full sheet in half and half again. Love how well it works.
Question: is it ok to use on an old desk? I am concerned about the circar pattern of this sander, I won't be able to follow the grain of the wood
Answer: It's a small orbit, about 1/16", like a vibration. For $30 give it a try. If you use fine paper on the last pass and move the sander in the directionof the grain, should be ok. I think it's agreat little tool.
Question: What about the cutted sections in the sandpaper
Answer: Hi, Put the sandpaper section on the sander. The sander came with a black square item that has spikes. Push the sander over the spikes and the holes in the sandpaper will appear. Also the holes are only needed if you want to collect the dust in the bag. I do not use the collection bag.
Question: Where do I find refills online for the 1/4 sheet
Answer: What is "Full Sized Sheet"? , I see 8 1/2 x 11 and 8 x 10.

Question: How well would this do with cutting corrugated plastic a.k.a coroplast
Answer: Honestly probably pretty well. I use mine to cut everything from 1/8 inch plexiglass, to 2x4’s with out a problem. Not a bad little machine honestly. When cutting something such a 2x4 blades wear out pretty quick but with the thin stuff they last awhile.
Question: What is the actual size of the saw
Answer: 26-3/8" x 13" x 14-3/4"
Question: Have a new 3922 scroll saw. Upper and lower pinless blade holders wont pinch together to hold the blades. Wen are you going to back up your saw
Answer: You have to make sure they are the correct length and it does take some work getting them in properly. It too two people to load mine.
Question: what is the difference between the 3921 and
Answer: These two units are almost identical. The only differences are that the 3921 includes a flexible work light and a blade storage compartment on the side, while 3922 features a special side panel that folds open for easy clean up and blade changes. Also, the 3921 uses the two-direction adapter system for holding blades (better for pinned blades), while the 3922 uses a standard blade holding system (better for pinless blades).

Rockwell BladeRunner X2 Portable Tabletop Saw with Steel Rip Fence, Miter Gauge, and 7 Accessories – RK7323

Rockwell

Based on 2 reviews Check latest price

Product description

The Rockwell BladeRunner X2 Portable Tabletop Saw is the solution to the problem of having to take materials back to the workshop to cut them, and then bring them back to the job site later on. If you’re a contractor, you know that that process can add an entire day to a project. The BladeRunner is only 15 lbs, so while stable and sturdy, it’s easy to toss in the back of the truck. And with a footprint of only 15.75” x 17”, it doesn’t take up an entire workbench like traditional table saws. The hold-down guard and splitter allow for work with wider materials, and a larger rip fence than other portable table saws provides better control and accurate cuts. A no-load speed of 3000/min, a stroke length of ¾”, with 5.5 amps of power gives it the capacity for light to moderate cutting of wood (up to 1-1/2”), ceramic tile (3/8”), PVC pipe (1-1/4”), aluminum (3/8”), and steel (1/8”). (Anything over 1-1/2” and you’re probably going to need a traditional, permanently fixed tabletop saw—but you can’t take that to the job site.) The blades change out almost instantly, in under 3 seconds once you get the hang of the tool-less blade change system. And the saw is protected by a Rockwell 3-year limited warranty, so you know they stand behind their tools.

  • [SETS UP IN SECONDS] Take this table saw to the job site or move it around the workshop. There’s even a built-in carry handle
  • [CUTS LIKE A FULL-SIZE] With the standard guard and riving knife system you can perform rip, cross, scroll, and miter cuts
  • [TOOL-LESS BLADE CHANGE] Uses any brand’s standard 4” T-shank blade, but we threw 5 in the box to get you started cutting wood, ceramic tile, plastic, aluminum, and metal
  • [0-60° MITER CUTS] With the adjustable gauge you can pull off precise miter cuts for a whole assortment of woodworking projects
  • [ON-BOARD ACCESSORY STORAGE] When the miter gauge, rip fence, and extra blades aren’t in use they can be conveniently housed in the base of the saw
  • [SAFETY SWITCH] Prevents accidental starting, plus the vacuum port lets you hook up a shop vac that cleans while you cut
