Answer: You don't use an air pump--you use an air compressor. Set the pressure for 110 pounds.

Answer: It's like a hammer, not a nail gun. It drives nails that are already partly nailed in.

Product description

The product is Coil Frame Nailer. Easy to use. The product is manufactured in Taiwan.

A popular model among builders who work on high-repetition projects like trusses and prefabricated frames, Bostitch's utility coil nailer offers huge capacity and solid reliability. When fully loaded, this nailer certainly isn't the lightest tool you could choose, but when you can drive 300 nails without having to reload, you quickly appreciate the timesaving capacity. With its aluminum housing and composite canister, this gun is a tough piece of equipment, designed to hold up to bumps and falls--the inevitable beating nailers take on a job site. The nailer's aggressive teeth easily grip lumber for toe-nailing. An adjustable deflector conveniently directs exhaust away from the user, and a quick-release canister makes loading new coils a snap. We were impressed with how solid the whole unit feels--it has the burliness of an industrial-strength machine. This model shoots 1-1/2- to 3-1/4-inch, 15-degree, wire-weld-collated, full-head nails, and weighs just over 8 pounds empty. Note: this model does not have adjustable drive depth. --Jonathon Tudor

User questions & answers

Question: can someone explain why the canister adjusts up to 4" nails but, it can only handle up to 3 1/4" nails
Answer: With a noise reduction rating of 21, as compared to the 22 of the popular Peltor TAC 100 model, the RangeGuard offers solid, consistent hearing protection. If you're shooting indoors, using an extremely high caliber weapon, or are surrounded by a significant amount of gunfire, your hearing may be compromised. Outdoor protection is excellent, and under most circumstances you are assured of being fully protected. After over 100 hours of use with the RangeGuard (both indoors and outdoors with a wide variety of firearms), I never experienced any kind of noteworthy shortcomings in the noise reduction of the model. As stated, under some circumstances you may feel the audio coming in a bit louder than you'd like, but the average gun owner will never need a stronger model.
Question: Can I use it for solid hardwood flooring
Answer: Yes, very easily. They even amplify sounds and make them easier to hear (but not loud noises like gunshots). They have a microphone on each earpiece so you can easily distinguish where sounds are coming from.
Question: Is this a good framing nailer
Answer: They'll only "work" if you turn them off. As someone who actually owns these headphones, no - they will not work for lawn mowers. Unless, of course, you turn them off, in which case you're paying a premium for muffs with a microphone and speakers in them. The headphones pick up all outside noise using two forward-facing microphones so that you can "hear" while you're wearing them. The cutoff circuit only engages when it picks up a sudden, sharp noise - like a gunshot, an air nailer, or a hammer blow. Continuous loud noises such as heavy equipment, power tools, saws, airplanes, etc... do not trigger the cutoff and in many instances can *amplify* the noise.
Question: Will this fit 1 1/2" or 1 3/4" roofing nails
Answer: These are teal the others are camo green. That's about it.

Choosing a Pneumatic Nailer

For small household jobs, an old-fashioned hammer is the perfect stand-by. But if you've got a bigger project on your to-do list, then a pneumatic power nailer could be your new best friend. Pneumatic nailers are a great alternative to traditionally powered nailers, because they're capable of providing more power -- and they operate with fewer moving parts, so a pneumatic nailer can take more abuse than its corded or battery-run cousins.

A Word on Air Compressors

All pneumatic tools require a steady supply of controlled, compressed air in order to work properly, and nailers are no exception. Bigger compressors with hardy motors and large tanks generate higher PSI levels and maintain them longer, so you'll probably want a piston-type, two-stage compressor to power your nailer. Smaller or single-stage models are fine for little projects, but if you need a pneumatic nailer, the odds are good that you're looking for some intense PSI and CFM ratings. Sometimes, a pneumatic nailer will come with its own compressor -- or it can be purchased as part of an air tool set.

How Pneumatic Nailers Work

Pneumatic nailers use compressed air power to cock and release the hammer. In order to fire a fastener, a valve opens to let air fill a cylinder -- which has a piston that's driven down hard and fast. This forces the nail out of the gun and into your workpiece. Then the piston recoils, and another nail is loaded.

Important Points to Consider

Check manufacturer's guidelines to find out what pressure (PSI) and volume (CFM) of air will give your pneumatic nailer the best results. Also, keep in mind that any restrictions on the air hose will diminish the tool's performance. Hoses that are very long, contain too much moisture, or are incorrectly sized will reduce air flow. This can prematurely wear out your tool and cause it to perform poorly.

General Features

Most models will feature a rubber nosepiece to prevent scuffing and marring of your workpieces, plus an exhaust system (rear or adjustable) to keep sawdust and debris out of your face and away from your project. Pneumatic nailers usually have an adjustable depth of drive, and depending on the model, they can accommodate nails up to 2-1/2 inches long, in a variety of different gauge sizes. With a powerful enough compressor behind them, they can shoot thousands of nails a day.

  • Pneumatic coil framing nailer with an adjustable exhaust
  • Patented push button adjustable depth guide sets nails to desired depths quickly and easily
  • Lightweight magnesium design; aggressive wear guards to protect the tool from damage on abrasive surfaces
  • Magazine holds up to 300 nails

User questions & answers

Question: what is the difference between his one and the $519 one. they have the same n89c-1 number
Answer: MADE IN CHINA I just bought these because I thought they were not made in China. They are made in China not Germany.
Question: I am building a fence and Need to drive galvanized 13 gauge 2-2.5 inch nails into cedar pickets, will nailer work? Thank you
Answer: No they are not adjustable. These were bought for my wife and they just fit her and I would say she has an average head.
Question: Does anyone know if I can use this gun for lap siding? Blind nailing
Answer: The tactical sports cost me $150 when I got and after 2 years stopped working. Peltor wanted over $100 to fix them. These cost less and still work after 2 years.
Question: what compressor to buy for this tool? please advice (for framing
Answer: I just did my first range shooting today. I was able to borrow a pair of these cups. I wear glasses. I had absolutely NO problems with the seal letting in extraneous noise. Even with 30dB of reduction, the noise is still quite loud, but not enough that your ears will be damaged, or even be ringing, when your shooting day ends. I just put in my order for a pair of them. Highly recommended!

Answer: It is pneumatic. I've been using a 6 gal Campbell Hausfeld compressor with 1/4" quick disconnects at about 90 - 100 psi for metal connectors and 16d nails and have never run out of air. I bought it mainly for the metal connector ability, which it does great, but is also great for down to 6d nails. Just turn down the pressure on the smaller nails.
Question: Is it difficult to find nails for this hammer
Answer: Metal connector nails need to be larger around to fit properly in the holes and have the shear strength. If the nail is longer than 2-1/2 inches the gun will not fire by design. I can only find the 1-1/2 21 degree nails on Amazon and Home Depot online. They are expensive, but surprisingly, I tried some 33 degree 1-1/2 inch nails in this gun and it fires normal. I don't see any wear as a result either. I would not try this with longer 33 degree nails because they would angle out of reach of the driver. The gun out performs my old Senco SN60 by a large margin, is lighter, but about an inch taller.
Question: What is the difference between a round head and a clipped head nailer
Answer: The round head is the traditional type nail you would find in a box or bin of nails. The clipped head is the round head clipped off to the width of the nail shank on two sides--does not had the holding power of the round head.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this made in the USA
Answer: The BTFP71917 uses straight finish nails.
Question: Will this take paslode or dewalt nails
Answer: It has a no mar tip that is specific to this gun although it takes much less pressure on the tip to shoot the gun compared to other guns
Question: Whats the degre angle on this nailer
Answer: I disagree with the person who said they wont fit a wide face. I need glasses that are wider and with longer temples than normal. These can be adjusted and they fit me great. So if you have a large head, give these a try
Question: Where can you buy the standard no-mar tips for this bostitch btfp71917 nailer
Answer: Our regular safety glasses and safety sunglasses are currently not ANSI Z87.1 certified, but we are looking into the possibility of subjecting the glasses to this certification process in the near future. If OSHA / Z87 certification is a requirement for you, then our over-spec safety glasses might be of interest to you, as they are fully ANSI Z87.1 and OSHA certified.
