12 best pneumatic nailers

Pneumatic nailers, also known as pneumatic nail guns, are versatile power tools commonly used in construction and woodworking for rapidly driving nails into various materials. They operate using compressed air, making them efficient and precise tools for tasks such as framing, trim work, and finishing. Here are some key points about pneumatic nailers:

  1. Compressed Air Operation: Pneumatic nailers are powered by compressed air from an air compressor. The compressed air is delivered through a hose to the nailer, where it drives nails with force.

  2. Types of Pneumatic Nailers:

    • Finish Nailers: Finish nailers are used for detailed and delicate work, such as trim, moldings, and cabinetry. They use thin nails (often called finish nails) that leave minimal visible holes.
    • Brad Nailers: Brad nailers are a subtype of finish nailers and are used for even more delicate work, like attaching thin moldings or attaching lightweight trim.
    • Framing Nailers: Framing nailers are larger and more powerful, used for heavy-duty tasks like framing houses or building decks. They use larger nails (typically clipped-head or full-round head nails).
    • Staple Nailers: Staple nailers are used to drive staples into materials such as fabric, insulation, and underlayment.
  3. Precision and Speed: Pneumatic nailers offer both precision and speed. They allow for accurate placement of nails or staples while significantly speeding up the construction or woodworking process compared to hand nailing.

  4. Nail Capacity: Nailers have a magazine or nail strip that holds a certain number of nails or staples. The capacity varies depending on the type and model of the nailer.

  5. Depth Adjustment: Many pneumatic nailers feature depth adjustment settings, allowing users to control how deep the nails or staples are driven into the material. This feature is essential for achieving the desired finish and preventing overdriving.

  6. Safety Mechanisms: Pneumatic nailers often include safety features to prevent accidental firing. These features typically require the user to apply pressure to the work surface and depress the trigger simultaneously to activate the nailer.

  7. Maintenance: Proper maintenance is essential for the longevity and performance of pneumatic nailers. This includes regular oiling, cleaning, and inspecting for wear and tear.

  8. Air Compressor Compatibility: When using pneumatic nailers, it's crucial to ensure that the air compressor is compatible in terms of pressure and airflow capacity. The manufacturer's recommendations should be followed.

  9. Usage Tips: Users should wear appropriate safety gear, including safety glasses and hearing protection when operating pneumatic nailers. They should also keep the tool pointed away from themselves and others while in use.

  10. Popular Brands: Several reputable brands manufacture pneumatic nailers, including DeWalt, Bostitch, Makita, Paslode, and Hitachi (now Metabo HPT), among others.

Pneumatic nailers are valuable tools in construction and woodworking, offering efficiency, precision, and versatility. They are available in various types to suit different tasks and provide a faster and more accurate alternative to traditional hand nailing. Proper usage, maintenance, and safety precautions are essential when working with these power tools.

User questions & answers

Question: will it take any brand of nails
Answer: I have used two different brands so far. As long as the nails are plastic coated, 21 degree I believe any brand would work. The best prices I have found on nails is at harbor freight. 2500 nails for around $28. I have used 2 1/2" and 3 1/2"
Question: How come just below the nailer specs they say "often bought with this product"....22 degree nails....not
Answer: I used some of the 22 degree without a problem. I've used Bostich guns for 30 years prior to this gun & this is as good as any I've used.t's a great nailer
Question: do the nails have to be plastic coated
Answer: Plastic coated? No. But I do believe they have to be Plastic Collated, that is, they need to be bound together with plastic. I'm not sure if paper collated nails will work.
Question: What kind of air compressor do you recommend for this nailer
Answer: It really depends on how you're using it. If you're intermittently nailing with in and not imitating a machine gun- you can use a pancake or similar small compressor. The working pressure of the nailer is 70-115 PSI. I run mine at 100 PSI. Any portable compressor should be able to hit that pressure. The real question is duty cycle. If you're nailing every few seconds then you'll need a compressor capable of keeping up with the volume of air being consumed OR you'll have to slow down until your compressor stops running before firing the next nail. I run mine on 2 different compressors and don't have any issues- one is a 40 gallon shop compressor- the CFM is infinite compared to the gun. The other compressor is 2.6 CFM. I don't rapid fire when I'm using it and I can fire several nails before the compressor has to cycle. As long as you're not continuing to fire when the compressor is running you should be OK.

Numax 21º Full Head Framing Nailer

It's time to tackle a new project - and we have just the tool to get it done. The SFR2190 is perfect for framing, but did you know you can also use a framing nailer to install sub-floors, roof decking, wood fencing, sheathing, and more? We designed this nailer with you in mind, so it has all of the premium features you need to get started.

Step 1: Choose Firing Mode

Your framing nailer comes with a black single-fire trigger already assembled. This is the best choice if you haven't used a framing nailer before, or if you want accurate nail placement.

Follow the manual instructions to install the red bump-fire trigger if you want quick successive firing.

Step 2: Connect to Compressor

Set your compressor to 70 PSI and use the quick-connect fitting on your air hose to connect your framing nailer. If you have a really dense material, you can increase the pressure up to 115 PSI.

Put a few drops of oil into the fitting before connecting to a compressor to keep things running smoothly!

Step 3: Load Nails

Pull the side lever back along the magazine until it snaps into place.

Drop the nails into the open channel on the top of the magazine. The angle of the nails should match the angle of the nose of the nailer.

Lift the lever at the back of the magazine to release the side lever and secure the nails.

Step 4: Adjust and Go!

This nailer is loaded with features that let you customize for any project. Change the depth adjust, 360º air exhaust, or remove the no-mar tip for extra holding power.

Pro Tip: Use piece of scrap material to test out your nailer before starting on the real thing!

21º Plastic Collated Full-Head Framing Nails

A 'plastic collated nail' just means that the nails are held together with a thin strip of plastic. They are great for DIY projects because there are no issues with glue or sharp pieces of metal flying around when you're working. We suggest you use 21º nails for the best performance, but the SFR2190 can use any nail from 20º - 22º. The magazine fits nails from 2" to 3-1/2" long and is compatible with any generic brand, which is perfect if you have nails left over from other projects! If you don't have any leftover nails, we've listed some fasteners here that have worked for our customers in the past.

User questions & answers

Question: Any suggestions on a pancake compressor for these guns
Answer: Mines not a pancake compressor, but it is around the same size. I have a 2.6 gallon 2 HP compressor that works beautifully with these guns. It fills to 120 psi, and I have a regulator on the compressor that allows 80-90 psi through, depending on the gun I am using at the time. I can usually shoot 20-30 nails before it has to get more pressure built up, but never dropping below 90 psi. Since the tank is so small, it takes only seconds to fill again. I'm not sure what the rules are on linking to other items, but I bought the compressor off Amazon.
Question: should you use a water separator or oiler with nail guns
Answer: The only specification with the Freeman nail guns is to provide oil to the system. So I have only been oiling since water is not a problem in the air system I'm using. Some of the air supply systems I have used previously needed a water separator. If you are not sure about the amount of water in your system a water separator might be a very good addition.
Question: Has anyone had trouble with these nail guns working right
Answer: I have been using my framing gun 3 days out of the week as I continue to remodel my house. I have used the 15 gauge and 18 gauge guns just as much without any problems. I don't know if it's related to the setup and continuos maintenance but I have a filter on the compressor and use the air tool oil. I never exceed 120 psi on my framing gun and I adjust to 75 to 90 for the other guns. I continue to have good service from these tools.
Question: what kind of nails does it use
Answer: I use Hitachi fasteners. GEt mine at Lowe's. Used the Stapler and Angle Finish Nailer today. Built our 16'x16' deck with the Framing nailer. Great set of tools. User questions & answers

Question: Can someone recommend an air compressor that would power this nailer? I don't know a lot about tools and don't want to buy larger than i need
Answer: : A Husky 4 gallon portable will run three of these nailers. I believe it cost me $250.00. It's pretty quiet. Both of these cost less than a battery one
Question: What is the difference between 18 gauge brad nailer and 16 gauge finishing nailer? I need to install trim, build bookcase and install decking floor
Answer: Brad nails are formed from a fine 18 gauge wire, while finish nails are made from heavier 16 or 15 gauge wire. Finish nails are the correct choice for fastening larger crown and baseboard trim, brad nails are used to install smaller trim to help prevent splitting and to promote a cleaner looking job with less touch-up work after the nailing is done.
Question: Would I need to purchase anything else (battery) in order to use? I know absolutely NOTHING about power tools
Answer: Hello, Thank you for writing ACME Tools. The DWFP12231 Brad Nailer is a Pneumatic tool so you will have to use an Air Compressor and a hose with the proper fittings. Other than that, this unit is very straight forward and easy to use.
Question: what is the voltage
Answer: The voltage is 765 kV and it is also powered by two Siemens & Halske alternators rated 30 hp (22 kW), 2 kV at 120 Hz and uses 200 series-connected Gaulard 2-kV/20-V step-down transformers provided with a closed magnetic circuit, one for each trigger. Hope this helps.

User questions & answers

Question: Can this be used to nail quarter round to the floorboards
Answer: This nailer is perfect for quarter round. The smaller 18 gauge nails make it less likely to split the wood. I’ve also noticed that this nailer doesn’t leave dimple marks. I’ve used mine to install base trim, quarter round, shiplap, and furniture making.
Question: Is it possible to fix the safety so that I can shot without applying pressure to the nose where the nail exits the gun
Answer: I wouldn’t, seems like a good way to shoot your finger. Some of my guns have double triggers and it’s not an issue. Plus how would you control the depth of the nail setting action.
Question: why does it say power source corded electric
Answer: I guess they mean the air compressor is electric and it’s the power source. The nailer is all air.
Question: can this gun take 18 gauge headless nails
Answer: I got a stapler in my box, don't know what you will get!

User questions & answers

Question: Does it come with a sample supply of nails
Answer: No Unfortunately does not come with a sample box of nails.
Question: I see it's magnetic for holding nails but will this work with 1 1/4 inch aluminum nails (not magnetic) to install trim
Answer: Yes you can, but the magnet wont hold the nail. You will have to hold the nail by hand or with pliers (1 1/4 is a little short) until you get it started and then you can remove your hand/pliers and finish driving it with the nailer. The nailer activates by holding pressure down on the nail top with the nailer.
Question: Can this be used with 1-1/2" nails? Amazon says "up to 3-1/2 inch nails" but Freeman website says
Answer: I think it should be ok for 1 1/2", but it's difficult for 4".
Question: Dies it hold up pretty well? How about if pressure briefly gets high? - (accidentally ruined
Answer: I'm not sure about the pressure problem. I only use mine for hanger nails or toe nails in tight spots. Sounds like you need a new pressure regulator more than a new tool.

User questions & answers

Question: Need to replace nail set
Answer: Not sure what that means. But don't buy that nail gun! You end up having to set one-third of the nails by hand and that's annoying
Question: Will this shoot 16 gauge nails too
Answer: No, it is designed for only 15ga nails
Question: Anybody has the bare gun weight
Answer: Specs say 4 lb but it feels much lighter and has great power. Been a loyal Senco finish nailer user for years but this is a much better nail gun especially for the price.
Question: Are these 34* nails hard to find in say, a big box store??? I cant even find them on Amazon and thats my only concern is not finding the right nails
Answer: I ordered Senco A302000 15 gauge 2 in. and Senco A302500 15 gauge 2 1/2 in. that work fine. These were recommended by Amazon. Some nail guns are 33 1/3 degree and some are 34 degree. Not much of a difference there.
