12 best pin nailers

A pin nailer is a type of power tool commonly used in woodworking and carpentry. It is categorized under finish nailers, which are tools used for precise and delicate nailing tasks often associated with finishing work.

  1. Functionality: A pin nailer is designed to drive pin nails, which are very thin nails with a small head. These nails are nearly invisible once driven into the material. Pin nailers are ideal for attaching delicate trim pieces, moldings, or any application where leaving a minimal mark is desired.

  2. Nailing Precision: Pin nailers excel in providing high precision. The small diameter of the pin nails and the minimal head size mean that they create very small holes and marks, making them an excellent choice for finishing work.

  3. Applications: Pin nailers are commonly used for tasks such as attaching crown molding, baseboards, thin trims, delicate paneling, or any project where larger nails might cause splitting or damage to the material.

  4. Power Source: Pin nailers are typically powered by compressed air (pneumatic) but can also be electrically powered.Pneumatic pin nailers use air pressure to drive the nails into the material.

  5. Nail Size: Pin nailers typically accommodate very small nails, often ranging from 23 to 18 gauge. The lower the gauge number, the thicker the nail.

  6. Usage in Finish Carpentry: Finish carpenters often favor pin nailers due to their ability to securely fasten delicate trim without causing visible holes or splitting the wood.

In summary, a pin nailer is a specialized finish nailer used for precise nailing tasks, especially in finishing work where a minimal and inconspicuous nail hole is desired. It operates by driving very small-diameter nails, known as pin nails, into the material, making it a valuable tool in woodworking and carpentry for achieving a high level of precision.

Metabo HPT Pin Nailer Kit, 23 Gauge, Pin Nails - 5/8" to 1-3/8", No Mar Tip - 2, Depth Adjustment, 5-Year Warranty (NP35A)

Metabo HPT

Based on 638 reviews Check latest price

Product description

Metabo HPT's NP35A micro pin nailer drives 23-gauge headless pin nails, which produce nearly invisible holes.

It can drive 23-Gauge pin nails ranging from 5/8" to 1-3/8" in length. Please note, it is necessary to buy high quality pins to ensure the tool works as expected. Pins with lower grade metal can be less rigid and bend at the point of entry or bend at the point of impact from the tool. Each of these scenarios can cause the tool to jam or the pin not to penetrate the wood as anticipated, especially at longer lengths. Metabo HPT pin nails are manufactured to higher tolerances and perform better in our nailers. For best performance, use the following genuine Metabo HPT pins, available on . 1) 23000SHPT (5/8") 2) 23001SHPT (3/4") 3) 23002SHPT (1") 4) 23003SHPT (1 3/16") 5) 23004SHPT (1 3/8")

Lightweight and compact, the NP35A pin nailer may be used in a variety of applications including cabinets, paneling, small molding and trim, glazed bead, craft work and picture frame assembly.

User questions & answers

Question: Is this electric or used with an air compressor
Answer: Air compressor.
Question: What are the options for depth adjustment? Can you adjust to 1/4 inch with a 1/2 inch nail
Answer: As copy says: Magazine automatically adjusts to 5/8", 3/4", 1", 1-3/16" and 1-3/8" fastener lengths for use on a wide variety of projects. 1/2” isn’t listed as it’s too short. 5/8” is the shortest pin nail. As for it driving the pin nail halfway as you inquired, reducing the required air pressure might help but could jam the unit or cause some other issues.
Question: Where is this made
Answer: Metabo was a German Co. sold to a China Co. and it seems the parts are made in both and some from Japan and others countries around the world.
Question: What is the best pressure to seat the nails properly
Answer: I run my pressure between 80 and 90 psi and have had no trouble driving the nails all the way in with no head showing both in pine and oak lumber. Below 80 psi and the nails don't go all the way in when I'm using oak.

User questions & answers

Question: Could I use this to attach trim to a concrete basement wall
Answer: This shoots very thin 23 gauge nails. I would not attempt this with a concrete wall. There could be a chance of it ricocheting off the wall. A concrete wall should be studded out and drywalled before installing trim but if you need to do this you should attach the trim with liquid nails.
Question: Is this a one time use pin nailer
Answer: Hello, The Arrow PT23G pneumatic pin nailer uses strips of pin nails in various sizes. The pin nailer fires pin nails every time the user holds the tool against a surface to engage the safety mechanism and then pulls the trigger until the strip of pin nails is depleted. Hope this answers your question! Feel free to contact us at or 800-776-2228. - Your Arrow Fastener Team
Question: What length of nails
Answer: These are 23ga pins, 1 inch is the largest. Works great for small detail glue ups.
Question: Is this gun oil-less , or does it require oil maintenance
Answer: I always put a drop on oil in my air guns. That said I have not been impressed with this gun, I actually purchased another gun to replace it after my second use.

User questions & answers

Question: Gift wrap available on porter cable
Answer: Check what the AMZ site shows when you order. My own preference for wrapping on any gift s the transparent type.
Question: Porter Cable says the gun is maintennance free, yet some folks say put a couple of drops pneumatic tool oil in the air hose prior to use.Whats right
Answer: While there is no need for pneumatic tool oil it will not harm the unit to add a few drops.
Question: Will this work with a 6 Gal compressor
Answer: Absolutely. I currently use one with a 4 Gal compressor. A 6 gal compressor will have no problem keeping up. Minimum recommended compressor requirements are: Air Pressure 60psi, Air Flow 1.6 CFM. This should be well within the capabilities of your compressor.
Question: Is this an oil free nail gun

User questions & answers

Question: What size battery do you buy in thextpo2z pin nailer cordless tool
Answer: I guess it would depend on the job size you are using it for. I only use it for small jobs, so I only use a two hour amp battery. I guess if you had a larger job you would use an accordingly larger battery. As long as is the 18 V Makita battery.
Question: will this gun shoot a slightly headed 23ga nail
Answer: Probably not ...gun is very temperamental emend with typical headless pins
Question: does it take a special charger for new 6.0 batterys
Answer: Not sure but wouldn’t think so...more a battery question than pin nailer related
Question: Anybody that have trouble with this gun have issues taking back within 3 year warranty? Thanks for any help
Answer: Yes, i had issues with it jamming consistently so i returned it. A new one was sent and same exact issue. These guns have multiple design flaws and operational issues. No you are not losing your mind. Unfortunately this is not a good product from makita

User questions & answers

Question: What's the difference with other same products
Answer: Hello, this was a gift so I'm not sure what the difference is but the person I brought this for swears behind this company name
Question: Can this nailer go through oak - e.g. some oak cove or shoe molding
Answer: This nailer will go through oak but I had to crank up the air pressure to above 95 psi to make sure it set the pins below the surface. Try it out on a piece of scrap and see what it does for you.
Question: gun fires, but nails won't come out. What is the problem
Answer: If the gun sounds like it is firing and no nails are coming out, you need to clear the jamb by removing the front plate. Once clear, the nails should feed. check for gunk on the nails or that it is inserted with the point down. (chisel point is easy to see with a very bright light.)
Question: Why won't the 1/2" pins stay in place when ever you drive one in, next one jumps from groove
Answer: I have used both extremes in pin length, 1 3/16 and the shortest I think was 3/8, all with no problem. If the "next one jumps from the groove" as you say, are the pins still in the colated (glued together) row or have the ones you're using been separated before they were loaded into the nailer. Also are you using Bostitch pins or an off brand? I have always used Bostitch pins and I am careful not to separate them before they go into the nailer. This combination seems to always work fine for me. P.A. Schuster

Product description

The NP18DSAL Pin Nailer is taking fine finish carpentry to the next level. No longer will you have to worry about hoses and compressor for your 23-gauge pin nailer needs.

It is equipped with a built-in counterweight that virtually eliminates all recoil, while reducing the force needed to actuate the tool.

It also features a no-push work contact safety tip that reduces marring to provide a clean finish.

Additional features include tool-less depth of drive adjustment, dry-fire lockout, on-tool battery indicator, belt hook, soft grip handle, and tool body rubber bumpers.

The NP18DSAL pin nailer is capable of driving approximately 3000 pins with Metabo HPT's Compact 3.0Ah battery, allowing you to efficiently and comfortably complete any task.

This 23-Gauge cordless pin nailer drives pins in lengths of 5/8", 3/4", 1", 1-3/16" and 1-3/8".

Can be used to produce nearly invisible holes for a variety of applications including cabinets, paneling, small molding and trim, glazed bead, craft work and picture frame assembly.

Covered by Metabo HPT's Lifetime Lithium Ion tool .

User questions & answers

Question: hi it can use for wood floring . with the gun what else i have buy eg nails wot else
Answer: You can tack anything from 1/2" to 1" 23 guage is pin nailing too light for heavier heavy work. You cannot use for flooring.
Question: I know it says up to 1", but i can not get anything larger than half and inch to fit. i don't understand what i'm doing wrong. how do you load it
Answer: If you have previously used 1/2" there is probably one stuck in the pinner. Otherwise the slide adjustment is stuck and will not let you adjust for the longer pin. I ended up sending mine back as I could not get it load properly. Ordered a remanufactured one from ebay with free shipping and works great.
Question: I'm buying a compressor with 1/4" x 25' pvc air hose with fittings. will this work
Answer: Yes it should. That is the standard fitting size. If it doesn't work then you can put a different fitting on the hose. The part is cheap.
Question: Can i use compressed co2 instead of an air compressor? if so, what size cannister
Answer: Probably after a lot of effort to make it work, see Driver 165's answer. But why? You would quickly run out of gas. This is a wonderful pinner, use it all the time without any issues. I do use brand name pins in it. Rather than co2 why not buy an inexpensive pancake, 3 gallon, air compressor. That option would work better. You can buy one from Amazon for around $100 or if you have a Harbor Freight store near you, wait for a sale and buy one for under $50. I bought one for under $40. These compressors last a life time and can be used with any pneumatic tool - some air tools are less expensive than their corded brothers. To me an air compressor is essential - my first one cost over $500 but today they are so inexpensive that there is no reason to be without one.
