11 best card scraper
A card scraper is a versatile hand tool used in woodworking to smooth and finish wood surfaces. It's an essential part of a woodworker's toolkit, particularly for those who prefer hand tools over power tools for certain tasks. Here's some information about card scrapers:
Purpose: Card scrapers are primarily used to remove thin shavings of wood to create a smooth, glass-like finish on a piece of wood. They are especially useful for removing fine irregularities, tear-out, or milling marks that may remain on a wood surface after using other tools.
Construction: A card scraper is typically a thin, rectangular piece of high-carbon steel with two working edges. The edges are often sharpened to a 90-degree angle, creating a burr on the working edge.
Usage: To use a card scraper, the woodworker holds it by the edges and flexes it slightly to create tension. This flexing, along with the burr on the edge, allows the scraper to shave wood when it's pulled across the surface. Adjusting the angle and pressure while using the card scraper allows the woodworker to control the depth and intensity of the cut.
Sharpening: Keeping the scraper sharp is crucial. It involves removing any imperfections or dullness from the edge and creating a new, sharp burr. This can be done using a burnisher or specialized scraper-sharpening tools.
Applications: Card scrapers are commonly used for tasks like smoothing table and chair legs, removing paint or varnish, and preparing wooden surfaces for finishing. They are particularly handy for situations where power sanders may not be suitable or desired.
Safety: While card scrapers are hand tools and generally safer than power tools, woodworkers should still exercise caution. Sharp edges can be dangerous if mishandled, and proper technique is essential to avoid injury.
Maintenance: Storing card scrapers properly is important to prevent rusting. They should be kept clean and lightly oiled when not in use.
In woodworking, a card scraper is a valuable tool that allows craftsmen to achieve a high level of precision and quality in their projects. It provides an alternative to sanding and can be a preferred method for many woodworkers, especially when working with delicate or intricate pieces of wood.

User questions & answers
Question: | does this come with two scrapers |
Answer: | There are for more standard woodworking projects. While it would technically be possible, that is not what you want to use them for. There are much better systems out there for stripping an entire deck. Using these would take a very long time. They are small tools and they are designed for finishing work, not for stripping many square feet of wood efficiently. |
Question: | How long is the steel of the burnisher |
Answer: | No Sr. You need to sharpen before |
Question: | Package contained only the burnisher how do I get the cabinet scrapers in the product description |
Answer: | OTOH, instead of purchasing a burnisher, one could just burnish the scraper edge with a screwdriver shank... |
Question: | How do you get the edge started on them? I can't seem to get them sharp, this is my first set |
Answer: | No. FYI, all new woodworking tools require sharpening before use. These are good scrapers, but they ship with a tag that tells you they must be sharpened. |
- Scraper burnishers are a staple in most every woodworkers shop. They are used to create a burr or an edge on card scrapers so that the scrapers can produce clean, smooth wood surfaces by scraping the wood. Most woodworkers love to use scrapers simply because they produce a wonderful looking end result that are beyond compare to most any other device.
- This burnisher is simple in design and is made specifically to create burrs on the edges of flat, curved or beveled card scrapers. The steel rod diameter measures approximately 3/8” which makes it perfect for working the edges of your scrapers without any give.
- If you have never used a burnisher, it is relatively simple to use. The idea is to roll the edges of your scraper to create a burr so that it produces fine, light shavings and makes the wood surface very smooth. To do this, you simply tilt the burnisher slightly to one side of the scraper and run the burnisher along the edge repeatedly until you produce the burr you are looking for.
- Once your scrapers have the desired burr on each edge, you’ll be able to produce wonderful looking results on your wooden surfaces. Scrapers are perfect making your surfaces extra smooth and ready for light sanding for the finishing process. Using card scrapers has long been used by wood craftsman for years and is now becoming more common among beginners and mid level woodworkers.
- The burnisher measures approximately 11-1/2 inches in total length and has a hardwood handle with a steel ferrule. It can be used for standard burnishing applications and for working small, tight ends and spaces. The rod is made from hardened steel to withstand burnishing process.
User questions & answers
Question: | What is the hardness rating |
Answer: | The product I ordered for $30 included 2 scrapers and 1 burnisher rod. |
Question: | How long is the burnishing rod |
Answer: | take a rod of tool steel (about 3/8" diam), a good screw driver or a burnisher. Secure the scraper in your vise, run the burnisher firmly across the edge of the scraper. (you are not sharpening the edge), a burr will form that you can feel with your thumb nail. As the burr forms, test the scraper on a piece of scrap wood until you get shavings, not dust. With your thumbs in the middle of the scraper push it away from you. It is a skill learned with practice.... good luck... |

Why do you need a burnisher?
If you have ever used a cabinet scraper or a card scraper, then you know that over time they lose there edge just like any other cutting device will do. Often times, the scrapers are not even honed when you use them for the first time out of the box. The sole purpose for burnishers is to hone scrapers when needed. So if you have a scraper or two, then you should have a burnisher in your tool box.
Round Steel Bar
The round steel bar is the part of the burnisher that does all the "dirty" work. When you are rolling over an edge on your scraper, you need a solid metal bar or rod to do this. Our burnisher is the perfect tool for this chore with its heavy duty steel bar
It Doesn't Take Long At All
Honing or sharpening your scrapers should only take a few minutes. We have included instructions on how to properly hone a card scraper with the burnisher. You'll have your cabinet and card scrapers ready to roll in no time!
Sharp, Clean Edge Equals High End Results
Once your scrapers are properly honed, you're ready to start working your wood surfaces as needed. Working card scrapers is as simple as flexing them just a little bit and pushing across the wooden surface to clean or smooth the surface as desired
Produce The Results You Want
With scrapers your able to really pay attention to working specific areas on a work surface. This allows you to hand craft your workpiece to the exact look and feel you're looking for. There aren't a whole lot of power tools or devices available today that can replicate a good old card or cabinet scraper.

Fulton Scraper Burnisher with 6 Multi Shaped Scrapers
Using a burnisher to hone your scrapers is the best way to make the necessary bur on the scraper itself. Once the scraper is properly honed, it is ready to scrape the wood and help produce wonderful looking results that are hard to beat. Many woodworkers and craftsmen swear by their scrapers and its one of the most commonly used hand tools in the woodworking industry today as it was many years ago
Hone your scrapers
While using the hardened, polished high carbon HRC 62-64 steel rod on the burnisher, honing your scraper doesn't get much easier. With only a few strokes of the burnisher, you'll have one side of your scraper ready to start scraping the surface of your wood. While the term scraping sounds a little harsh, it simply means that your scraper will scrape or remove fine shavings of wood to help produce a finish like no other tool can really produce.
Scrape or Shave Your Wood...
Creating the perfect look and finish for your project is what we all want. Using a scraper can help achieve this by allowing you to remove finer amounts of material than with regular old sand paper. Scrapers also allow you to focus on specific areas of your wood so you can actually shape areas as needed with them.
Fine Finish Results
It bears repeating over and over again that card scrapers help produce some of the best finishing results possible when compared to other methods. Nothing removes just the right amount of material and produces smooth finishes quite like a scraper does.
