Power and Stability

To provide stable footing--the key to optimum accuracy--the 54HH has a 21- x 13-inch (W x D), all-steel base cabinet that puts the table surface at a comfortable 32 inches above the floor. The one-horsepower, one-phase, 115-/230-volt motor (pre-wired for 115 volts) is factory-mounted within the base cabinet and can be converted to use 230-volt power. Helical Cutterhead

There are many cutterhead designs that carry the helical moniker, including simple straight blades broken into segments and dispersed around the cutterhead cylinder. Despite the helical label, they retain many of the liabilities of the long-blade designs. However, the 54HH features a true helical cutterhead with specially machined carbide inserts arranged in spiral-shaped rows for effective--and incredibly quiet--performance.

The inserts also have a four-inch radius ground into them and are mounted so they approach the wood at a 14-degree angle. This creates a true shear cut that eliminates much of the impact and the resulting fiber disturbance other cutterhead designs deliver. Also, the durability of the carbide combined with the low-impact, shear cutting action mean the inserts have an extended life.

Precision Ground Cast-Iron Tables

With a length of 66 inches and a width of 7-1/2 inches, the main precision-ground cast-iron table is one of the longest available in this class, providing plenty of support for large workpieces. It's conveniently mounted on dovetailed ways that keep it perfectly aligned through height changes. Adjustments are easy: the outfeed table height is adjusted with a handwheel mounted below the table; to adjust the infeed table, the handle can be moved up and down for coarse height changes or, the long handle can be rotated to make fine, precise height adjustments.

High-Performance Fence System

The all-cast-iron fence system has a length of 38 inches, height of four inches--and like the tables--is precisely ground to ensure straightness. Question:	Will this run on household current
Answer:	The cutting blades are exactly 3-1/8 inch. The shoe is 3 inches. This is a useful tool for trimming doors and other small dimension work, but it is hand held and very powerful. I use it rarely, but when you need something like this it beats using a hand plane. For real planing jobs I have a Ryobi joiner/planer for work up to about 6 inches and for big stuff I use my Ridgid 13 inch planer. The Bosch unit would be considered a limited use tool, but the price for a refurbished unit from Bosch was very reasonable.
Question:	Instructions for cleaning the table says to use kerosene, but is there another way to clean it without kerosene

When we look at jointers, there are a couple of tests at the top of our list, and this model aces them all.

First, it’s got a generous 8-inch wide bed, and you can’t do better than that. But icing on the cake is the bed’s luxuriously long 82 inches, giving you absolute support and accuracy on the infeed side. We like the way the infeed table travels up and down; instead of a handwheel, you just loosen the locking lever and move the long-handled table adjustment arm. Leverage is our friend, and there’ll be no more skinned knuckles! Lock the lever again and you’re ready to cut. When you want to cut rabbets – a beautifully simple job on this jointer -- override the 1/8-inch depth limit by turning the control knob. Twist it again to re-engage this feature. The outfeed table adjusts to knife height easily, should your jointer not retain its factory setting during shipment. It’s worth checking.

We like this fence best of all the competitors for a couple of reasons. There’s a non-marring insert in the fence contacts that prevent scratching the infeed and outfeed tables while you’re adjusting it. The fence rides smoothly across the beds and locks easily. But its best trick is tilting 45 degrees – both forward and backward, giving you a total angle to the back of 135 degrees for beveling. And instead of grasping the whole fence to tilt it, this one moves beautifully by handwheel.

The three-knife cutterhead should be perfectly adjusted from the factory, but to be safe, we recommend checking it before running any stock. The head turns at 7,000 rpm, giving you 21,000 cuts per minute and a super-smooth surface.

The final feature that won our admiration is the placement of the power switch. You’ll find it below the infeed bed on most jointers, but on this Powermatic, it’s positioned on its own arm above the infeed table. We like this spot best for safety’s sake – a jointer is a beautiful machine, but with just a little operator error, it has the potential to maim. Having the power switch in the open just makes good safety sense.

Question:	What material are the fence and table made out of
Answer:	I am 99% certan that the tables are cast aluminum, and the fence is aluminum. The weight, color and feel make this pretty evident. If it were cast iron it would weigh twice as much and be prone to rust. This jointer is as good functionally as any other. But because of its light weight it must be secured to a stable heavy base. It also needs a bit more tuning than other models. But if you are going to own any precision tools that is something you should become capable of.

Question:	Can you send directions of how to use it? He lost his and needs to change the blades. We read the remarks but that didn't help
Answer:	I haven't used to in 3 years and the directions are in my 10 degree garage. If I remember right, adjust both sides of the table to zero, then one black end goes in the infeed end and the other black side's magnets contact with the sharpened blade in it's topmost rotation. Hold it still and tighten the retaining screws. Repeat with your other blades. If you have an aluminum table, it won't work, you'll have to use double sided tape and remember you will be cutting deeper than it is set for.
Question:	will this jig function correctly for knives edged in carbide
Answer:	I tried picking up a carbide tipped 3/8" round over router bit by the carbide and it worked fine. Only thing was the router bit wanted to roll over to the steel part of the bit. You would not have this issue with this jig because the knives will be captured in a groove by the time you place the jig on the jointer. D Showalter has a good idea in mounting the jig then manually holding the knives up while tightening. Sure beats the alternative trying to hold up the knives to some sort of straight edge rig. I struggled with mounting knives in my Jet jointer before I found this ... may be worth the $27 and change to give it a try.
Question:	Has anyone used this on the Jet 8" Benchtop planer/jointer? It has an aluminum outfeed deck which obviously will not hold magnets
Answer:	I do not see how it could possibly work for you.
Question:	Will this work to set up the porter cable 6" bench top jointer
Answer:	It should, but I don't have the porter cable, mine is a harbor freight. It's a ridiculously simple device, basically two bars with magnets embedded in the ends to hold the blades at the same height every time. Makes setup much simpler.Magnets in both ends, so one end is held to the out feed table while the other end holds the edge of the blade. That ensures the edge of the blade is exactly the same height as the out feed table. Set the jig, put the blade in, and tighten the screws. Very simple.
