13 best band saw use

Using a band saw effectively and safely is essential for achieving accurate and precise cuts. Band saws are versatile power tools commonly used for cutting various materials, including wood, metal, plastic, and more. Here's what you need to know about using a band saw:

1. Safety Precautions:

  • Eye Protection: Always wear safety glasses or a face shield to protect your eyes from debris.
  • Hearing Protection: Band saws can be noisy; use hearing protection.
  • Dust Control: Use a dust collection system or wear a dust mask to avoid inhaling sawdust.
  • Secure Workpiece: Ensure that the workpiece is securely fastened to the table or held in place with a jig or clamp.
  • Blade Guard: Keep the blade guard in place to prevent accidental contact with the blade.

2. Blade Selection:

  • Choose the appropriate blade for your material and cutting application (wood, metal, resawing, etc.).
  • Ensure the blade is properly tensioned, tracked, and sharpened for clean cuts.

3. Adjusting the Band Saw:

  • Adjust the blade guide settings to match the thickness of your material.
  • Set the blade guide bearings close to the workpiece to minimize blade deflection.
  • Adjust the table to the desired angle for bevel cuts, if needed.
  • Set the fence or miter gauge for straight or angled cuts.

4.Starting the Band Saw:

  • Ensure the power is off before making any adjustments.
  • Stand to the side of the blade and start the saw.
  • Allow the blade to reach full speed before feeding the material.

5. Making Cuts:

  • Feed the material into the blade slowly and steadily.
  • Keep your hands a safe distance away from the blade, using push sticks or push blocks for small pieces.
  • Do not force the material; let the blade do the cutting.
  • Pay attention to the blade's cutting path and keep it on the desired line.

6. Resawing:

  • When resawing, use a resaw fence or guide to ensure uniform thickness.
  • Take your time to make straight and even cuts.

7. Maintenance:

  • Regularly clean the band saw and the table to prevent buildup of sawdust and debris.
  • Check the blade for signs of wear and replace it when necessary.
  • Lubricate moving parts as recommended by the manufacturer.

8. Turning Off the Band Saw:

  • After completing your cuts, turn off the saw and allow the blade to come to a complete stop before leaving the machine.

9. Familiarize Yourself with the Manual:

  • Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions and safety guidelines provided in the band saw's manual.

By following these guidelines and practicing safe and precise techniques, you can make the most of your band saw while minimizing the risk of accidents and achieving high-quality cuts.

User questions & answers

Question: How do you keep it from sliding with the wood as you are cutting
Answer: Once the knob is tightened, the Hedgehog doesn't slide or rotate easily. When the knob is tightened, it causes the conical head of the screw to expand the miter clamp which tightens it in the miter slot. There are two possible causes for the miter clamp not being secure in the miter slot: 1. The conical head of the screw has two bumps that should be placed inside the gaps of the miter clamp to prevent it from rotating. When the bumps are in the gaps of the miter clamp, the head of the screw will be slightly recessed. If the head of the screw is flush with the miter clamp, they are not properly aligned. 2. If the miter clamp is moving in the slot or the body of the Hedgehog is rotating too much, simply tighten the knob a bit more. Since the Hedgehog only has a single knob, it requires a bit more force to tighten than that required with traditional featherboards that have two knobs. There are extra images of the correct screw position in the product images but you have to double click on one of the images for them to appear as part of the slideshow.
Question: The hedgehog is rotating in the video, why
Answer: That's the way it's designed! It has a single knob so the Hedgehog's spiral shape allows it to be quickly and simply adjusted to accommodate the board's width by rotating it into position.
Question: I just received this item and it wont expand into the miter slot and hold tight. It's a 3/4 inch slot, what's the problem
Answer: 1. Ensure that the tabs on the head of the screw are aligned with the slots in the miter clamp. The head of the screw will be recessed into the miter clamp when it's correct. See product images for more details. 2. Some miter slots are extra wide. If that is the case, it can be helpful to disassemble the Hedgehog components, insert the tip of a flat screwdriver into the miter clamp slot and twist it some to expand the clamp. It doesn't take much. Reassemble the Hedgehog as it was originally (washer goes between knob and body of Hedgehog).
Question: will this fit a sawstop
Answer: It fits a standard table saw miter slot

Answer: Taiwan

Product features

Control stock while keeping your fingers away from danger...

Push blocks are an essential part of workshop safety. Whenever we need to push stock through on router tables, band saws, jointers, shapers and in some cases table saws, it is always a good idea to keep our fingers away from the blade or cutter. This push block has been designed with exactly that in mind. The block is made from a heavy polyethylene plastic that absorbs any sort of shock. It won't crack or shatter if dropped and it won't crack or shatter if it comes into contact with a blade or cutter. This makes the push block the perfect safety accessory for any work shop environment.

Router Table

One of the more common uses, the push block works exceptionally well when feeding stock through on a router table. Simple downward and inward pressure keeps the stock up against the fence while at the same time keeping your fingers away from harm.

Free Hand Routing with Two Push Blocks

Free hand routing can be a little tricky. Typically free hand routing is done on curved or round stock and keeping your fingers away from the cutter can prove to be a challenge. Using two push blocks not only keeps your fingers away from danger, but allows you to control your stock when feeding it though the cutter.

Band Saw Re-Saw Applications

Re-sawing is a common use for band saws. Using a push block to feed your stock through the blade makes this process safer by keeping your fingers away from the blade at all times.

Double Up for More Power on the Jointer

When jointing or planing wider stock on a jointer, it can be tough to feed the stock through the cutters. The jointer generates a lot of power. Using two push blocks at a time on your stock helps you place the much needed downward force to feed your stock through the cutters.

Heavy Duty Material for Everyday Workshop Use!

The push block is made from a heavy duty, injected molded, polyethylene plastic material. This material is very thick or dense and provides the user with a substantial feel in there hand when using it. This along with the angled, molded handle grip gives you more leverage than straight vertical style push blocks.

Soft, Receptive Foam Rubber Pad for Gripping Your Stock

  • Soft, receptive, rubber foam pads line the base of the push block. The rubber pads make pushing, gripping and controlling your stock much easier and safer than doing it free handed.
  • The pad is is approximately 3/16" thick and works on many different types of materials

Keep it clean

  • The rubber pads are easily washable with warm water.
  • The pad must be completely dry before using again
  • Do not use paper towels to wipe off the pad. We recommend using a microfiber or cotton cloth.

User questions & answers

Question: When centering the blade on the tires, should the blade or the gullets be centered
Answer: According to Alex Snodgrass the band saw guru with Carter power tools, the gullet of the blade is what should be centered on the tire.
Question: Do I have to buy the 72 inch blades, or is there some room for a 72 7/16 blade to fit it
Answer: I don’t have a different answer, but I feel bad for the person that has 21 downvotes, because they’re not wrong. This saw is available in 3 sizes. 72 is for the 10”, 62 is for the 9”. Sorry, ccbdav. Don’t let em get you down.
Question: Has anyone used this tool to cut thru 4 inch oak? For example table legs
Answer: The blade that came with it is actually not bad at all as I cut a 5 inch diameter oak log from a chopped tree in my back yard down to a 3"x 3" x 2' piece of usable lumber. I was impressed. I later bought a bi-metal 1/2" 14TPI blade and installed it for metal cutting. It did cut with no effort a 1" thick T6 aluminum. I am not sure if if can do thicker as I did not try it. I also cut 1/2 mild steel bar with no problem at all. No binding or stalling. All the cuts of wood or metal were straight. You just have to let the blade do the work and not force feed it through
Question: Where is it manufactured
Answer: There's a tiny island off the north west coast of Mauritius called Gelff. Not even on most maps. Discovered by captain James Cook in 1752. In 1754 Gelff, represented by James Cook in Spanish courts, was granted sole manufacturer of the WEN 3962 Two-Speed benchtop bandsaw. Raw materials are brought in on one side of the island. Some kind of assembly/manufacturing factory must be inland somewhere, they don't allow access to the interior. The fact that this is such a fine product becomes obvious when one visits the far side of Gelff, where cargo ships are waiting to load and deliver this product around the world.

User questions & answers

Question: Am I correct that I can use this for not only my band saw blades but also my scroll saw blades
Answer: Yes you can on both blades. It aids in cutting and for anti-gumming. I use it to avoid build up on saw teeth do to aluminum being a gummy material
Question: Will just plain wax do the the same thing please? Thanks
Answer: Wax will work, but not as good as this blade lube. I have used both, and now use this lube. Just stating as I have viewed it. Less squeaking with this lube and I do not have to apply as often.
Question: how often should this be applied
Answer: As often as you need. Is your blade particularly loud on newer cuts? Apply the lube. Does it hurt to push the wood into the teeth? Add lube! Like many things in life, if it gets hard to push, add lube. It might get messy, but you sure cant have too much lube! LUBE LUBE LUBE!
Question: how often do you apply it
Answer: It depends on how often you use the saw. I would apply it every 4 or 5 times you use the saw. You may realize some wax build up on the wood if you apply it too often.
