12 best core drill bits
Core drill bits are specialized cutting tools used in various construction and DIY applications, particularly for drilling large-diameter holes in masonry, concrete, stone, and other hard materials. They are commonly used in tasks such as installing plumbing, electrical conduits, and HVAC systems, as well as creating holes for anchor bolts and other fixtures. Here's what you need to know about core drill bits:
Design and Construction: Core drill bits are designed with a hollow cylindrical shape, allowing them to cut a clean, round hole by removing a core or plug of material from the workpiece. The core drill bit consists of a drill body with diamond or carbide cutting segments on the outer edge.
Materials: Core drill bits can be constructed with various materials, including high-quality diamond or carbide segments. Diamond-tipped core bits are known for their exceptional hardness and durability, making them suitable for drilling into hard materials like concrete and masonry.
Sizes and Diameters: Core drill bits are available in a range of sizes and diameters to accommodate different hole requirements. Common sizes include 1 inch (25 mm) to 14 inches (355 mm) or more, depending on the specific job.
Compatibility: To use core drill bits, you'll need a compatible core drilling machine or a power drill equipped with a core drilling adapter. These machines provide the necessary power and stability to drill large holes accurately.
Dry and Wet Drilling: Core drill bits can be used for both dry and wet drilling. Dry drilling generates more dust and may cause faster wear on the bit, while wet drilling uses water to cool and lubricate the bit, reducing dust and extending its lifespan.
Segment Types: The cutting segments on core drill bits can vary in design, including turbo segments, segmented rims, and continuous rims. Each type is suited to different materials and cutting conditions.
Depth of Cut: The depth of cut achievable with a core drill bit depends on the bit's length and the drilling equipment used. Some core bits are designed for shallow holes, while others can drill deeper into the material.
Safety: When using core drill bits, it's essential to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses, hearing protection, and dust masks. Additionally, follow safety guidelines for handling power tools and drilling into hard materials.
Maintenance: To maintain the effectiveness and longevity of core drill bits, it's crucial to clean them regularly and ensure proper storage. Diamond-tipped bits, in particular, should be stored safely to prevent damage to the diamond segments.
Cost: The cost of core drill bits can vary widely depending on factors like size, quality, and the type of materials they are designed to cut. High-quality diamond-tipped core bits are generally more expensive but offer superior performance and durability.
Choosing the right core drill bit for your project involves considering the material you're drilling into, the required hole size, and the type of drilling equipment you have. High-quality core drill bits can significantly improve drilling efficiency and the quality of the holes you create in masonry and other hard materials.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is the 1.75" outside diameter? What diameter core does it recover |
Answer: | Absolutely, brick and block is what this tool is made for. |
Question: | Would it drill through rebar |
Answer: | I didn’t receive one with mine but the seller was great and sent one right out . I’m sorry I don’t know if you can buy separately |
Question: | Can I hook this up to a grinder witha 5/8" thread |
Answer: | 3 in OD |
Question: | Will this fit in a cordless drill |
Answer: | We drilled through a 8 inch cinder block wall with this bit. We also needed a 4 inch vent pipe...in our case for a dryer. It was difficult to get a standard 4 inch vent through the hole we bored. To have it work we inserted a sleeve through the wall made from sheet metal that was probably a little smaller than 4 inches and attached a 4 inch vent pipe on the inside and an outdoor vent on the other. This solution was easy and worked out great. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I’m looking for the pilot bit, i have a sds max 1 1/4” x 7mm arbor with a 14” x 4” core bit what pilot bit attachment do i need |
Answer: | 25/32" (a little over 3/4") |
Question: | Could you be more specific with an adapter for a 1/2" drill? Could you post a link to something that might work |
Answer: | There are two answers to this question. It can fit on a drill with a small (1/4") chuck. The second answer is: I don't recommend it. The Dremel 85422 Silicon Carbide Grinding Stone is intended for use with the Dremel 4000 Variable Speed Rotary Tool. If you attach the grinding stone to even a very small drill you lose a great deal of the precision that the correct rotary tool gives. There is also a safety issue. If you can't control the drill properly you may shatter the stone. The Dremel 4000 costs $80.00. If you need to grind a small object safely, the extra $80.00 is worth it. |
Question: | The threads are too far down in the drill to reach with a 1-1/4 7 adapter. What specific adapter works with this drill bit and a 1/2 inch drill |
Answer: | It can just the same as a drill bit. |
Question: | Can this be used in a 3/8" drill and does it require an arbor? Don't know what 1-1/4 in -7mm shank means |
Answer: | Thank you for your question. The Dremel 85422 Grinding Stone is a 100 grit stone. For further assistance, please contact us at 1-800-4-DREMEL (1-800-437-3635), Monday - Friday, 8A - 5P CST. |

What Materials Can I Use Diamond Drill Bits On?
Diamond drill bits are perfect for drilling holes through hard materials such as these:
- Glass, sea glass, beach glass, fused glass
- Stone, gemstones, rock, pebbles
- Ceramic, porcelain, tiles, glazed pottery, plates
- Shell, antler, bone, fossil
- Very hard wood
Diamond Drill Bits - Why should I Choose?
- Small Diamond Drill Bits have a solid end and therefore a larger surface area so they last longer than the small diamond core drills, but may take longer to drill a hole. They are more robust and therefore ideal for very tough, dense pieces of sea glass, very hard stone, precious stone, gemstones, hard shell, bone and antler.
- If you're a regular user of diamond drill bits it is worth having a combination of both small diamond drill bits in your tool box as sometimes you don't know if you have a very tough material until you start drilling!
Operation Note
- As with all diamond drill bits you should use water as a lubricant and coolant.
- Being hollow, allows the water to flow up inside and around the inner core of these drill bits as you are drilling, helping to keep the drill bit cool and removing the debris.
- Start your hole diagonally, make a round trace and then hold drill straight.

NEW - 1" - 6" BLUEROCK TOOLS DIAMOND WET CORING BIT FOR CORE DRILL - NEW Up for sale is a set of 1", 2", 3", 4", 5", and 6". WET coring bits for core drilling. Overall Length: 17" Approximate Inside Barrel Depth: 14.5" Approximate Thread Type: Industry Standard 1 1/4" (Directly fits our BLUEROCK Z-1 Core Drills) Note to buyers: Concrete coring bits are considered a consumable part. Bit life varies based on many factors including; material type, material density, depth of cut, hole diameter, drilling speed, wet/dry drilling and operator experience. As such, it is extremely difficult for BLUEROCK Tools to assess individual projects and speak to how long a bit will last before it needs to be replaced. We consider these core bits to be mid-grade in their performance but sold at a low-grade price point. Our customers tend to consider these bits to be a better value compared to high-grade bits that are a lot more expensive. We often hear that even though high-grade bits may last twice as long, they cost four times the price and they are happy buying our bits and getting the same amount of feet cut for half the price. Wet type concrete coring bits are NOT designed to cut all types of rock. They are primarily designed to cut concrete. Certain types of rock can be cut, but it will limit the bit life. The decision to use these bits on materials that they are not primarily designed for will be done at the risk of the user and not covered under our standard business policy.

User questions & answers
Question: | Is this bit intended to be used at a slow or fast drill speed |
Answer: | Thanks for your asking. We recommend you use it at fast drill speed. If you want to work at slow drill speed, it is also okay. |
Question: | Could you use this for drill through boulders |
Answer: | yes but its only about 4" deep |
Question: | Necesito una broca de marmol |
Answer: | Thanks for your question. There are only 18mm and 20mm diamond core drill bits in this kind diamond hole saws. But we have 3/4" vacuum brazed diamond hole saw for drilling marble. It is not laser welded diamond core drill bit, it vacuum brazed diamond hole saw. But drilling marble is enough, you could purchase it. |
Question: | can this go through metal |
Answer: | No, This is definitely not for metal. The diamond core bits are used primarily for drilling faucet holes in granite and marble. Granite in MUCH harder than concrete. My core bits made specifically for the granite industry would punch a hole through 3cm granite in about 3 minutes. Harder granite like absolute black and tropic brown would take 5 minutes or so. I would also keep them wet to reduce the temperature. Occasionally, I would need to cut through the stainless sink when a customer wanted to use a sink I did not recommend for the cabinet size. It would go through the 18-16 gauge stainless sink in about 2 minutes but it would produce more heat that the bit could withstand, even submerged in water. It would heat up and expand, throwing the diamonds out of the teeth and leaving the bit useless until you sharpened it for 20 minutes in a concrete masonry unit. |

User questions & answers
Question: | What adapter and pilot combo would I need to use this bit with my Bosch hammer drill |
Answer: | Yes, all core bits are measured by outside diameter. The inner is about 1/4" smaller, but that's not something we control for in manufacturing |
Question: | Have dewalt spline hammer drill & a sds adapter for small bits & hd milwaukee right angle drill which to use for 8" concrete |
Answer: | Yes it can. However, if you have a lot of rebar to go through, this series of core bits will perform better: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078ZQTB23 |
Question: | Need a 2 1/2 hole in street curb for drainage pipe, curb 6 - 6 1/2 inches thick, have Dewalt dwe4011 angle grinder w/ 5/8"-11 spindle, will this do it |
Answer: | Hi, you technically Can hook this up to a grinder with a 5/8" thread, but the RPM of a grinder is typically too high to operate a wet core bit efficiently. The recommend rpm for 1.5" diameter wet bit is around 2000 |
Question: | I have an sds max bulldog drill. What adapter do I need for this Bit |
Answer: | I dont see why not, im sure the Hulk could hold it in place, the drill made for this weighs 75lbs plus. |
