3 best wood lathe accessories
Wood lathe accessories are essential components that enhance the functionality and versatility of a wood lathe machine. These accessories can help woodworkers create intricate and precise designs while ensuring safety and efficiency. Here are some common wood lathe accessories:
Chucks: Chucks are vital accessories used to hold and secure the workpiece on the lathe. They come in various types, including four-jaw chucks and scroll chucks, and allow for easy adjustment and precision when shaping and turning wood.
Faceplates: Faceplates are circular metal or wooden plates with threaded holes that attach directly to the lathe spindle. Woodworkers use faceplates for turning irregularly shaped workpieces and bowls.
Live Centers and Dead Centers: These accessories are mounted in the tailstock of the lathe to support the workpiece at the non-cutting end. Live centers rotate with the workpiece, reducing friction, while dead centers do not move.
Tool Rests: Tool rests are adjustable platforms that provide support for woodturning tools. They help maintain consistent cutting angles and keep the tools stable during the turning process.
Drive Centers: These accessories attach to the lathe spindle and grip the workpiece's center. They help transmit power from the lathe to the workpiece, ensuring a secure and stable rotation.
Steady Rests: Steady rests are used to support long or slender workpieces, preventing vibration and flexing during turning. They consist of multiple rollers that can be adjusted to accommodate various workpiece sizes.
Tailstock Accessories: In addition to centers, the tailstock can be fitted with accessories like drill chucks, drill bits, and morse taper accessories to enable drilling and other operations on the lathe.
Pen Turning Accessories: For those interested in pen turning, specialized accessories like mandrels, bushings, and pen blanks are available to create custom pens.
Dust Collection Systems: Wood lathe dust collection systems help keep the workspace clean by capturing wood shavings and dust generated during turning. This ensures a safer and more comfortable working environment.
Tool Sharpening Jigs: These accessories assist in maintaining the sharpness of lathe tools. They help woodworkers achieve consistent and precise edges on their tools, enhancing the quality of their work.
Lathe Tool Sets: Wood lathe tool sets typically include a variety of cutting tools, such as gouges, chisels, and scrapers, designed for different woodturning applications.
Safety Accessories: Safety is paramount when working with a wood lathe.Accessories like face shields, dust masks, and hearing protection are crucial for protecting against potential hazards.
Lathe Stands and Cabinets: Proper storage and support for your lathe are essential for stability and organization. Stands and cabinets provide a dedicated workspace and storage for tools and accessories.
These wood lathe accessories are essential for both beginners and experienced woodworkers. They not only enhance the functionality of the lathe but also contribute to the quality and precision of turned wood projects.

User questions & answers
Question: | Do you offer this with a 1 inch by 10TPI |
Answer: | No, we do not have it. |
Question: | Are these cast aluminum |
Answer: | The arm is die cast aluminum, the handle is chrome plated steel. It's OEM for the later model Bridgeports and fit my 2000 model perfect. As an added bonus, it doesn't fly off and crack you on the head like the old steel ones do. |
Question: | what are the dimensions on this part, Will it work on a bridgeport 2j milling machine |
Answer: | Yes, that's what it's for. I bought it to replace the missing one on my late production American made 2J machine, and it also fits my early 80's machine. I can't comment on it fitting a new production Taiwanese made Bridgeport, I don't have one. But does fit better than the older iron cranks that tend to slip off crack you on the head. |
Question: | What is the length of this? (Center to center or overall length) I already bought a replacement that fit teeth but was too long and collides |
Answer: | Overall length of the knee crank with handle is 11" The crank itself is 9" |
Question: | Will this fit a bridgeport ez trak machine |
Answer: | Yes EZ Trak is a CNC add on to a standard Bridgeport Milling machine. The knee is the same and this handle will fit |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this work on a mini lathe for bead makeing i want to make more than just beads |
Answer: | This jaw design is really for metalworking and provides very little grip for wood. For beads you might want to buy a small Nova chuck (they are really good) and purchase one of their smaller jaw sets and a drill in the tailstock... Or do search online for jam chuck or consider mandrels.... |
Question: | smallest round stock it'll accept? Will it grip 1/4" steel mandrels |
Answer: | The jaws are reversible and meet in the center. Definitely will handle 1/4” stock. |

User questions & answers
Question: | I have a 3/4' live male threaded end but lost the spur, I need to weld a spur to a bolt so need to know the diameter of the taper below the spur |
Answer: | just as cheap to buy a new one. weld wont hold if you put any strain on it |
Question: | I would like to know the dementions of the shaft that goes into the chuck I know its tapered but need to know big and small size thanks Jack |
Answer: | If you have a Morse taper 2 (available in MT1) it has a taper of .04995 per inch. The approximate sizes of the big end and small ends are: 0.572 and 0.700. Those will vary depending on the depth of the socket (it's not a chuck), the length of the shank, and other variables. The only thing hard and fast about it is the taper. |
Question: | I'm new to turning and would like to know if the "5/8 inch crown" is refering to the outside machined dimension at the bitting teeth end |
Answer: | It is to the outside of the device, not from center to the points of the teeth. I don't recommend that you buy this, though. The center point is spring loaded and eventually the set screw on the side will come undone and fling off in a random direction. Then, when you take the piece off the lathe, the center point and spring will fly out the end. If you're lucky, you don't have huge piles of sawdust and you're able to find the pieces and put it back together. |
Question: | My pin is also stuck. It was not from being dirty because I have never used it. Has anyone came up with a way to get the pin back out |
Answer: | That's easy to fix. On the side, just below the teeth, you will find a screw. That screw allows you to do three things. First, it allows you to take the pin out if you don't want to use it. Second, it allows you to lock the pin so it does not retract. And last, probably what you are interested in, it allows you to free up the pin so it slides up and down. When the pin is out you will notice a notch on one side. Make sure the screw and notch are lined up or the pin just might shoot out at you the next time you loosen it. Do for now just loosen the screw about a quarter turn and the pin should loosen up. If it doesn't then take the pin out and see if something got into the spring which is behind it. Hope this helps. |
