13 best screw extractors
Screw extractors are tools designed to remove broken or damaged screws, bolts, or studs from a workpiece or material. They are also commonly known as screw removers or bolt extractors. These tools are essential in situations where a fastener is stripped, snapped, or stuck due to various reasons like corrosion, overtightening, or wear and tear. Here's what you need to know about screw extractors and related tools:
Screw Extractors: Screw extractors typically consist of a hardened steel, reverse-threaded bit with tapered, left-hand threads at one end and a handle or shank at the other end. The tapered end is designed to grip onto the damaged screw or bolt when turned counterclockwise. As you turn the extractor counterclockwise, it digs into the damaged fastener, allowing you to remove it.
Types of Extractors: There are several types of screw extractors, including spiral flute extractors, straight flute extractors, and double-ended extractors. Spiral flute extractors have a helical design that provides a strong grip on the fastener, while straight flute extractors are designed for use with larger fasteners. Double-ended extractors offer versatility, with one end for drilling a pilot hole and the other for removing the fastener.
Tap Extractors: Tap extractors are specialized tools used to remove broken taps, which are used for threading holes in materials. These extractors come in various sizes to match the tap size and are designed to grip onto the tap and remove it from the hole.
Taps and Dies: Taps are used for creating threads in holes, while dies are used for cutting threads on the outside of cylindrical materials like bolts. These tools are commonly used in conjunction with screw extractors to repair or replace damaged fasteners.
Hand Tools and Power Hand Tools: Screw extractors, tap extractors, taps, and dies can all be used with hand tools such as wrenches, pliers, and ratchets. However, for more challenging tasks or larger fasteners, power hand tools like impact drivers or drills with specialized attachments can make the extraction process easier and faster.
Tools for Home Improvement: Screw extractors and related tools are indispensable for DIY enthusiasts and professionals working on home improvement projects. They allow you to tackle tasks involving damaged or stripped screws, bolts, and threaded holes effectively, saving time and frustration.
Extraction Process: To use a screw extractor, you typically start by drilling a small pilot hole into the center of the damaged fastener. Then, insert the extractor into the hole and turn it counterclockwise using a suitable tool. The extractor's reverse threads should grip the fastener and allow you to back it out.
Safety Considerations: When using screw extractors and related tools, it's important to wear appropriate safety gear, including safety glasses, to protect your eyes from debris. Additionally, use caution and follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid damaging the workpiece or the extractor itself.
In conclusion, screw extractors, tap extractors, taps, dies, and related tools are valuable assets for anyone involved in home improvement or repair projects. These tools help you effectively remove damaged or stuck fasteners, allowing you to complete your tasks with ease.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this bit fit a screwdriver? And do you think I can remove a laptop screw in this manner |
Answer: | it depends on how crafty you are using similar tools. I used to replace a star screw on a thin RAZER 15" laptop. I placed some pads between the table and the laptop, I didn't push too hard to press the extractor in to the screw so I didn't break the screen. also I would recommend to use very low revolutions in your drill otherwise this thing will perforate the screw and the hole in no time. If you are careful I think you can use it almost anywhere. |
Question: | What is the smallest size bolt that can be removed with this extractor |
Answer: | It's made in China. I couldn't find one made in the US. |
Question: | Does anyone know if these will work on the tiny screws holding an rmr optic baseplate on the slide of a handgun? thanks in advance |
Answer: | You should choose a size smaller than the screw hole, or you can watch the tutorial with a YouTube video |
Question: | Is it safe use on a laptop |
Answer: | Yes. I followed the directions that either came with the remover -- or I looked up on youtube. I can't remember. You may have to experiment with which size you use. I know the first one didn't work, but the second one was right. They did work o.k. with my problem. |

Product description
First of all, our product hardness is 64 HRC-65 HRC, if the damaged screw hardness is higher than that, which will make the extractor bit shear off into bolt easily. Please contact Jellas first when you decided to purchase. We will tell if this product suits or not. Another important thing is that you should be careful of the working speed of the electric drill, and should keep the speed under 200 rpm, as the bit may break for high speed use. Also you can use a wrench to extractor. The lower speed, the better, which will also help you not make the frictional locking force out of control and protect the screw extractors not breaking.

JELLAS Damaged Screw Extractor
Designed Tools seed New Stories
If you forget the pilot hole or drive a screw too quickly, a power screwdriver can spin its bit fast enough to strip away the cross or other shape in a screw. Once that’s gone, the screw can’t be driven deeper or backed out. For screws where the stripped screw head rests flush with the wood (and you don’t want to risk damage to your project), then you may need a screw extractor.
Jellas 22 pieces extractor screws to extract screws made of advanced High Speed steel (H.S.S), twice tempered for extra hardness and is up to 64-65HRC; It can extract screws from 2 to 12 mm. Our screw extractor set works with any drill and any size of screw or bolt, great for those stubborn, broken, blocked or damaged and also for simple removal of screws, Jellas Screw extractors are designed to help you with that.
Attentions
The screw extractor is to keep the frictional locking force between the #drill/#extr bits and the damaged screws under control which will take a few more times if you are a new user.
First of all, our product hardness is 64 HRC-65 HRC, if the damaged screw hardness is higher than that, which will make the extractor bit shear off into bolt easily. Please contact out seller center first when you decided to purchase.
Instructions for Use
Drilling the Screw
Step1, It is better to use a drill rather than a screwdriver.
Step2, Please press the reverse button on the drill to prepare the electric drill for use.(Don’t need to reset the reverse button the whole process.)
Step3, Select a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw. Hold the drill bits up to the screw or fastener you need to remove. The right one will be slightly less wide than the screw head. When you find the right one, attach it to your drill.
Step 4, Line the drill bit up with the center of the screw. Place the drill bit in the divot you created earlier. Move slowly as you begin to drill. Too much force will damage the screw. Focus on holding the drill bit steady so it drills straight down into the screw head.
Step5, Drill a hole for the extractor. You will need to drill somewhere between 1⁄8 inch (3.2 mm) and 1⁄4 inch (6.4 mm) into the screw head. The depth depends on the screw extractor you have. Hold up the extractor to compare it to the hole you drilled. If the extractor doesn’t fit, keep drilling to widen the hole.
Pulling out the Screw
Step1, Insert the extractor into the drilled hole. The spiral end of the extractor goes into the hole. You can tap it with a hammer to make sure it’s in there, but don’t force it. The loose end should have a tap handle, which looks like a T, for you to hold onto. Twist the extractor counterclockwise until you can’t turn it anymore.
Step2, Twist the extractor with a wrench or drill. Grip the top of the extractor with a wrench. Continue to twist it counterclockwise until the screw pops free. Many extractors are designed to work with drills. Attach the free end of the extractor to the drill and turn on the drill to turn the screw counterclockwise. It’ll come out without much resistance.

Answer: | The BSPE6D Spiral Flute country of origin is China. For further assistance, contact us at 1-877-BOSCH99 (1-877-267-2499) from Mon-Fri 7A-7P CST. |
Question: | Will this work for a bolt as small as 10 mm |
Answer: | I don’t believe so. I thinks it’s designed for Phillips, torx, Allen screws, etc. |
Question: | Are the drill bits and extractors both left-hand? I think that is the way it is supposed to work. Double checking before purchasing |
Answer: | The extractors come in different sizes and are designed to "bite" into the screw head so you can then undo the screw using the reverse action of your power drill. So if you choose the correct size extractor to fit into the head of the security screw it should have no trouble removing the screw. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will this be able to remove a 4mm diameter screw which the head has broken off of |
Answer: | You might also want to check out the Grabit Micro kit http://www.amazon.com/Alden-4507P-Grabit-Broken-Extractor/dp/B000Q60UOO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1403282910&sr=8-1&keywords=grabit+micro as it has the smallest screw removers made. |
Question: | Need this to take the bolts out from my fender. Is this strong enough |
Answer: | size of the bolt matters, pre soak with wd-40 to break down rust , try loosening first with wrench if screw under 1/4 inch these will work just fine, pre-drill and use remover head on electric drill, air drill is too strong and will strip out. |
Question: | I can't figure out what grade bolts are for license plates. I have 4 of them with broken heads. Is this kit strong enough |
Answer: | license plate bolts should not be any heavier than grade 4These extractors are the greatest, I removed broken steel bolts that the head had stripped out-follow the instructionsthey are amazing!!!! |
Question: | will these work on 1/4" corroded stainless steel screws |
Answer: | I just tried to use them to remove some 1/4-20 stainless flat head screws that were corroded into a piece of aluminum. The #2 tool, which is spec'd for 1/4" fasteners, broke with very little effort. Since the heads were big enough, I then tried to use the #4 tool, which is supposedly strong enough to remove 3/8" fasteners, and it broke too. I don't expect miracles from these tools but I do expect that they would strip the fastener head before breaking themselves. I consider this a design flaw and would not recommend them for really tough jobs. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Does this include the case |
Answer: | Yes, it does have a case. |
Question: | I have a stripped screw down inside a metal hole about an inch. Will this get that out? No idea of the size |
Answer: | Maybe, but only if both sets of threads are not damaged and you can use a drill press with a vise. With damaged threads you may not be able to penetrate deeply enough into the stripped screw to be effective, which also maybe true with good threads if you are on the far side of an inch. |
Question: | Will this work on #4 machine screw with no head |
Answer: | yes- you do have to drill into the middle of your stripped screw - the use your speedout with a pair of pliers or a rachet handle |
Question: | is there any warranty on this ? I used it once and broke off in bolt the first thing, like it was made out off glass |
Answer: | CAVEAT EMPTOR. SpeedOut does ***NOT*** honor their lifetime warranty when it is not ordered directly from their website, and instead requires you to contact the Amazon.com seller for a replacement. (The Amazon seller sent me a new SpeedOut for free, at their own loss-and to their credit-without me shipping mine back to them.) Here's a transcript of my emails with SpeedOut:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Sent: Wednesday, August 06, 2014Subject: Replacement #1 bit.Hello! I'll be noting this disappointing customer service experience in a public Amazon review for others to be aware of. Most companies honor their warranties regardless.Am I mistaken in that I'm dealing with SpeedOut directly? Do they not have a website? If so, this still seems misleading, as I'm not sure how to have SpeedOut honor their lifetime warranty?Thanks,Jonathan--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear Customer,Thank you for your message, Yes we have a lifetime warranty. Product description
Wyvern USA Pro E-Z Out is a 5-piece, titanium plated, 4341 High-Speed Steel broken screw extractor set in a black case.
WHY TITANIUM PLATING?
4341 High-Speed Steel is already a hard metal (typically 62-63 HRC) and used in many common tools. However, screws come in a wide range of materials and hardnesses. Titanium plating increases the hardness of the steel to help the bits penetrate tough metals, stay sharper longer and resist rust and corrosion.
WHY A 5-PIECE SET?
The 5 different size bits are designed to remove all common screw sizes.
BIT SIZE SCREW SIZE
#0 smaller than 3/32” / 3mm
#1 3/32” – 5/32” / 3-5mm
#2 5/32” – 7/32” / 4-8mm
#3 7/32” – 9/32” / 5-10mm
#4 9/32” – 3/8” / 6-14mm
HOW DO I USE IT?
Step 1: Set drill to reverse and use a slow speed at all times
Step 2: Start with the drill bit/burnishing tip and drill down 1/16th inch to create a smooth hole
Step 3: Switch the bit to the extraction tip. Using constant downward pressure on the screw and a slow speed the extraction tip will bite into the screw and extract the damaged screw.
TIPS:
*Metal shavings are created during burnishing-remove any debris before extraction
*If extractor threads don’t bite into the screw head switch back to the burnisher and
clean out more of the screw head or switch to the next largest bit size and start again with Step 2
- ✅ 5-PIECE SCREW EXTRACTOR SET - This kit includes a screw extractor bit to remove all common sizes of damaged, stripped or broken screws.
- ✅ MODERN TOOL - typically called an easy out or “EZ out”, this titanium-plated screw remover and extractor kit improves upon the traditional design with a total of 5 bit sizes and full titanium plating.
- ✅ TITANIUM PLATING - increases the hardness of each bit to help them penetrate tough metals, stay sharp longer and resist rust and corrosion.
- ✅ EASY TO USE - set your drill to reverse/counterclockwise and use a slow drill speed. Begin the extraction by using the drill bit/burnishing tip and drill down to create a clean hole. Switch the drill bit to the extraction tip and using consistent, downward pressure (and a slow speed) allow the extraction tip to “bite” into the damaged screw.
- ✅ MUST-HAVE TOOL - whether you are a handyman, handywoman or contractor, screws sometime get damaged or broken. Keep this set in your toolbox to get the damaged screw out and your project back on track.
