User questions & answers

Question: I have the product here but as yet have not used it: have chisels and a small plane and I do not know the original angles so how do I begin
Answer: If questions were: does it have a guide for an a guide for an angle of 12.5 degrees; and, would I recommend this set? The respective answers are: yes, there is a guide wedge for each whole number from 10 up to the max angle included in the set (20°), plus one for each half degree in between each whole number, i.e., 11.5°, 12.5°, 13.5°, etc. I would recommend this set given the price and the number of angles covered. It's impossible to eyeball a half-degree difference on the grind of a knife. However, be aware that this set is more for reference than actually physically aiding you with holding a steady when you sharpen. You cant really affix a w0edge to your blade; the best way to use them is to find the angle of the grind by comparing it to wedges, then just holding steady to that angle as you sharpen. So if you're looking for something to physically force the proper angle on you, this is not the product.
Question: Why do the angles in millimeters not seem to correspond. Atlin says 38 mm for 30 degrees for plane but I am getting 58mm when I use my angle gauge
Answer: Not if you put blue masking tape over the upper part of your blade.
Question: Plane iron projection -- the lower left measurement is worn off on the casting; can anyone tell what that number is
Answer: As to your question 1, it's geometry. As to your question 2, you can change the angle of the cutting edge to any degree you wish. (90 degrees is the limit, but then you would have a hammer, not a knife.) Different cutting needs typically use different angles. As an example, chef knifes usually sharpened to 15-20 degrees. Outdoor knives generally sharpened to about 40 degrees. It's a balance between fine cutting and keeping an edge sharp in the field. Internet has good information on this subject.
Question: Where is this manufactured
Answer: It is a hard plastic. I personally found them useless. But it could just be me. I found it difficult to continue the angle to the end of the knife. I prefer just estimating the angle. My knives are sharp just using the stones and estimating the angle. Used 1000 and 6000 stone. going to buy an 8000 for an even sharper hone.

User questions & answers

Question: Will the orange cones work well with a 5/8" dia honing rod
Answer: If the bevel is flat, just adjust iron until the bevel is flat against the stone, using your eyes and a good light. Use pencil or marker on bevel first, make a few passes, and see if the marks are worn evenly. It's not actually critical; for planes, the iron is at about 45 degrees, and anything less than that will work. You could use 20, 25, 30, whatever. But I'd try one of the two for this tool, and one should be closer.
Question: How do I find the correct angle for my knife
Answer: I don't have an angle guide and use the black magic marker method for the edge. I get a quick burr and strop it off. If I'm worried I'll check for square. So far I've only used this for hand chisels.
Question: my knife has a 15 degree should i use the 14 or 16 adapter
Answer: Plane iron Projection 38 mm = 30 degrees. 50 mm = 25 degrees
Question: Does this set come with the bands for the blue angle guides
Answer: The product is manufactured in CHINA.

Question: Where are the instructions? That would be fun. This set came with no papers, instructions, drawings etc

Question: Can i use oil On these stones
Answer: I'm gonna go with yes, they will work fine on that dia honing rod. They hav little springs that allow them to adjust to diameter of the honing rod.
Question: Is the angle set to 1 angle or is it adjustable and if so what angles can it be set to
Answer: You need to check the manufacturers web site to find what angle they hone the knife at. Failing that you can always set a new angle of your own. Keep in mind that many Japanese knives are honed at 2 different angles. Most USA knives and European knives use the same angle on both sides.

Answer: There are a few ways to sharpen a knife and that may be why no instructions were included. The important thing is to get the right angle. This is based on manufacturer of knife, not stones. I find YouTube videos helpful.
Question: Where is this made? the one i received does not say "kota japan" on it as the photo does, and the box says china
Answer: You have to saturate (soak) these stones in water prior to each use. I am not sure oil is best, I just dip in water or splash some on every few minutes. Heads up though, if using water put on some nitrile or rubber gloves. After an hour of work on a blade I put a mirror finish hone on, I had cut myself unintentionally 7-8 times without realizing because after an hour being wet my skin was wrinkled and sliced without even knowing I had really touched the sharp side
Question: Where is the e book
Answer: There is a guide that you can put chisels and blades in and set to any angle/ length imaginable. The markings printed on side givin in millimeters helps with my planing blades. It’s pretty sweet.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the difference between the angle guide for $29.00 and the one for
Answer: Don't have it.
Question: Will it work on a bench grinder
Answer: 15 to 20 degrees means 15 to 20 degrees on each side which means the total angle will be 30 to 40 degrees. Fine for kitchen knives, but not really as sharp as you may want it to be. This angle will probably last longer than a more acute angle.
Question: Will this fit the generic belt sand
Answer: Kota Japan is our brand, not when it was manufactured.
Question: It's upside down. Is there a way for the many knife makers that prefer sharpening with the belt and not against it
Answer: Download at kotajapan or contact us through your order screen. Thanks.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this leave marks on a chef's knife
Answer: The only difference I could see is $10.00. I chose the least expensive one and have not had any problems. It does what I want just fine.
Question: what is the angle that this product is pointing
Answer: Not sure which bench grinder you have, but this is only meant to work on a 1"x30" belt sander.
Question: Is this straight razor compatible
Answer: Yes, it fits on my generic belt sander just fine. I had to adjust the bar that it attaches to, because the bar was bent back slightly and prevented a good fit. I just bent the bar until it was vertical and it worked fine. Easy adjustment to make.
Question: What do these do to your stones? I would think they would gouge them
Answer: Hi Peter,We do not have one that goes the other way. I felt the same way the first time I used it, but it works great with the belt going into the edge. The rest of the knife is protected from scratching by the adjustable metal plate. You can always try it and return it if you don't like it. We also refund any shipping charges to sent it back too. Hope that helps!Travis512-364-9845Pro Sharpening Supplies / Texas Sharpening

User questions & answers

Question: Buying it as a gift for my woodworking friend, is easy to sharpen his chisels
Answer: Not sure about other knives, but these definitely left marks and scratches on my japanese knives ... :(
Question: Can anybody tell me how to choose the right angle of the sharping jig eaisly ? Plane iron projection
Answer: Elis, it is variable according to the width of the blade. The wider the knife blade is, the less angle to the sharpening stone. Think of it like this: If you had a sheet of paper (8-1/2" by 11") and put a 4 inch block under the 8-1/2" side, it would have a sharper (or more) angle than if you put it under the 11 inch side. I only got my sharpening guides to help maintain the cutting angle of my Sushi Knives at a constant angle. They work well for most knives with a large stone (2" X 8" to 10"). On longer blades, it needs to be repositioned along the back as your are sharpening. Hope this helps.
Question: Where is this manufactured
Answer: NO! This guide is made for knifes, not straight razors. A straight razor’s angle is 7-8 degrees, whereas a kitchen knife’s angle is 17-20 degrees.
Question: Can anybody tell me how to choose the right angle of the sharping jig eaisly ? Plane iron projection
Answer: Hi Jerry Collins - No - These guides give me a constant angle - meaning I get a perfect edge for the knife - I keep the stones wet - and the guides grip the knife well (while the others plastic ones don't) I glue two stones side by side , to give me a wider surface and help to balance the blade - I feel it a much better way to sharpen the Japanese knifes - a single stone is too small to sharpen a chef knife - keeping it sharp - I touch the blade on a 3000 Matsuhiro stone - hope this was helpfull
