User questions & answers

Question: How durable are the plastic handles
Answer: Assembled in USA so probably means parts are imported.
Question: is there a cleaning process best for the sharpener after it's been used? theres a good amount of dusting i'm seeing build
Answer: I have been going back and forth with Chef's Choice Customer Service until I'm pulling my hair out. First they tell me that the honing stages of the 463 and 464 are the same angle as the sharpening stages. Then they tell me that they are NOT the same. BUT THEY WON'T TELL ME WHAT THE HONING ANGLES ARE. They also told me, believe it or not, that the honing stage on the 4643 is for 15 degree Asian knives ONLY. The manual contradicts that and clearly states directions for sharpening both 15 degree and 20 degree knives and for honing and polishing BOTH 15 and 20 degree knives in stage 3. So I don't know if the honing angle for knives is supposed to be the same as the sharpening angle or not. If you hold up the 4643 and look at the "V" of the different stages, or slots, I call them, you can see clearly that the angle of slot 3 is wider than both slots 1 and 2. I love the sharpener, but I still don't know what the honing angle is, or what it's supposed to be.
Question: Is this the right tool to sharpen an axe or hatchet wtih a few chips in the blade
Answer: There are three slots: Asian; Euro/Amer; and Polishing & Serrated. The first is for 15-deg Asian knives, the second for "Kitchen & Sports Knives 20-deg edge, and the third for "Serrated Knives and Honing Stage." Following the directions, I swipe our Asian knives 25 times back-and-forth in the first slot, followed by the same in the third slot. I do this about once a week, or as needed, and our knives stay really sharp.
Question: What are the specific grits
Answer: 4633 have diamond pads, while 4643 have diamond disks. Disks are way better, because they will damage blade much less during sharpening process. Pads will do lateral cuts into blade, that in the long run force edge to develop micro chips and cracks, while disks will do angled (more like diagonal) cuts.

The DMT Difference

Uniformity: DMT uses micronized monocrystalline diamonds, precisely sized for a more uniform diamond surface. No other diamond sharpeners offers micronized monocrystalline diamond and most offer the lesser grade poly-crystalline diamond. Mono-crystalline is like an ice cube made up of one particle holding its form while poly-crystalline is like a snow-cone made up of many small particles that get sheared off during use.

Coverage: DMT’s process assures the most diamonds per square inch in the industry providing a more durable sharpening surface.

Surface Flatness: DMT bench stones are engineered flat, assuring even contact with the knife or tool.

Choice of Diamond Surfaces

Interrupted or polka dot surface for which DMT is famous has slightly recessed holes that will collect metal fines (swarf) removed during sharpening to prevent loading. Fast sharpening action; not recommended for pointed or very small tools.

Continuous surface presents a more conventional looking sharpening surface. Fast sharpening action; able to use on small surface edges.

HardCoat, DMT’s newest proprietary surface, is able to withstand the rigors of ceramic sharpening, providing an even longer service life to the sharpener.

DMT Commitment

DMT is committed to providing the best diamond sharpeners in the marketplace. If the sharpener is found to be defective, we will replace it.

About Sharpening with DMT

There is a ‘break-in’ period for your diamond stone. Initially, it will feel especially rough but will smooth over time without impacting performance. Let the diamonds do the work; just light strokes with the edge to sharpen, same number of strokes each side. Approximately 5 or 6 strokes per side (depending upon condition of edge) compared to 30 strokes per side on a conventional stone, saving time and extending the life of the knife or tool. Start with a coarser grit for damaged or dull edges and work to finer grits. The work the edge is to do will help you determine the grit needed: Rough work, end with coarse grit (cutting cardboard); finer work, work through finer grits (food preparation).

User questions & answers

Question: Is there any abrasive on the card edges
Answer: In all the times that I've used this to sharpen anything the handles did fine besides that you shouldn't be using that much force to destroy the handles in the first place.
Question: Has anybody tried cutting these in half....to potentially double your usage time?.otherwise, i find the middle doesnt get used, just the edges. ThankS
Answer: I don't know about the best or an approved process, but I can tell what I do and it seems to work fine. I simply put the file part under running sink water and wash it with a scrubbing sponge (i.e., one with a plastic scrubber on one side) or an old tooth brush and dish washing soap. Wipe with a paper towel to dry. Repeat until the paper towel remains clean after drying. I've done this many times and the sharpener works considerably better after a good cleaning.
Question: How brittle are these? I want to put one in my edc pouch that rides around in my cargo pocket. Will they snap easily if bumped or flexed
Answer: I doubt this is the right tool for your need. If the hatchet/ax is dull (especially if the blade has chips) I think you will have to remove a considerable amount of metal to remove chips and get the edge ready for this tool. A grinder or coarser steel hand files would be better to get the blade closer to its new condition. You could then use this tool to create an ultra sharp edge. I use the tool (in 300 and 600 grit) to sharpen knives, scissors, and router bits. It works great for these -- mostly because diamonds are able to efficiently remove very hard metals. I noticed that you've asked about the coarse grit version of the tool. That's probably appropriate for sharpening a hatchet/ax, but only after you have already put a pretty good edge on the blade with some other tool.
Question: Is there any loosing diamonds? Because I have another dmt items that the diamonds become loose and getting bald
Answer: Hi Timothy:This has a fine 600 grit on one side and a coarse 325 grit on the other. These are in stock and made in the USA! . Please feel free to call with any other questions you may have.best regards,Chuck RankinWood Tech Enterprises, Inc.P.O. Box 2226Fairview, NC 28730, USAPhone: 828-628-4414Fax: 828-628-4490

Diamond Machine Technology (DMT) W6FP 6-Inch Diamond Whetstone Sharpener - Fine With Plastic Box (DMTW6FP)

DMT (Diamond Machining Technology)

Based on 256 reviews Check latest price

Product description

600 diamond mesh. Durable plastic storage box with mounting tabs. 6" x 2" Diamond Sharpeners. Uniquely designed diamond sharpening stones will hone the hardest material with less time and effort than conventional stones. Interrupted pattern increases cutting action while clearing fines from the diamond surface. Remains flat, requires only water as a lubricant and is virtually indestructible.

This all-purpose whetstone sharpens and hones a variety of household tools and equipment, maintaining the accessories for the hobbies of just about everyone in the house. Its most common use is for sharpening kitchen cutlery and scissors; however, this whetstone also works on chisels, planes, masonry drills, and other shop tools; garden tools; ice skates; climbing equipment; ski edges; fishhooks; ceramic; stone; and glass. The whetstone is durably and uniquely constructed of perforated steel molded into a plastic base. The surface features minute pieces of diamond, the hardest known material for sharpening, embedded into a nickel plate, to achieve an extremely sharp edge. The bonded diamonds are arranged around an innovative pattern of plastic discs and the combination of these two materials greatly reduces sharpening time and resists wearing over time.

This particular whetstone is encrusted with a fine diamond grit of 600 mesh to put a razor-sharp edge on any type of blade. The surface should be moistened before sharpening and the blade should be passed over the whetstone with light pressure at a 20-degree angle to get the proper edge without dulling it. After sharpening, the whetstone may simply be wiped off and its nonporous properties prevent water from seeping below the surface.

This whetstone measures 6 by 2 by 3/4 inches and has rubber safety feet underneath it to prevent sliding during sharpening. DMT generously vows to replace any product found to be defective free of charge. --Cristina Vaamonde

User questions & answers

Question: I have a smith & wesson border guard 2 rescue knife swbg2ts.. would this work well for that
Answer: Just had a look at mine--nope, no abrasive on the edge--the cards are really thin, so I don't there really could be, anyway.
Question: Can you use this to level other whetstones
Answer: Never have tried to cut them in half. Haven't experienced your problem with wear either. love these little stones. They do wear out though.
Question: What grit or grits work best to sharpen wood plane irons
Answer: I don't think there is any danger of snapping the Dia-Sharp card by accident (or on purpose, for that matter). The substrate appears to be steel, about 1.5x the thickness of a credit card, with the finishing surface diamond-impregnated.
Question: does it work better wet or dry
Answer: Please do not buy from this seller, I had to get a refund from amazon because it only came with the extra fine sharpener. I have however used it several times on my mora which is effective but by sight and through refracting light seems to be no presence whatsoever of diamonds. As much as this will probably be criticized, I recommend just grabbing a good ol' reliable puck sharpener.

User questions & answers

Question: How many (stones) fit into an altoids tin? i'd like to carry stones in my sheath so i can sharpen if needed. too small for 4-6 inch blade?? ty
Answer: This stone is very coarse and aggressive, for putting the initial bevel on the blade. It will not work for serrated blades, or serrated portions of blades. If the blade is already pretty sharp, it would be better to go with a finer stone to maintain the edge. The best way is to use an ascending series of stones, starting with very coarse to very fine, maybe 1200 grit or so to finish. In my knife sharpening business, I finish up each blade using stropping compound on a leather strop, so my routine is 7 ascending grits in all.
Question: Is this for DMT pro aligner kit
Answer: Hello, This is a sharpener, not a lapping stone for flattening other stones. The surface is not designed to withstand the abuse of flattening. DMT has a DiaFlat with our developed hard coat technology; this is the only stone we recommend using for this application.
Question: Can these be used to sharpen woodworking chisels and plane irons
Answer: It depends but if they are already sharp then the finest grit is best to keep them in shape. to resharpen you"ll want a coarser grit. the 'fine' stone is probably best for all around.
Question: Can these stones be use to flatten whetstones
Answer: I use it dry ! But also take a wet towel to it wipe it down every now and again .

User questions & answers

Question: How do i make a warranty claim? the grit came off the stone completely when i was sharpening. i would like a refund
Answer: It depends on which size altoids box you're talking about. The 0.37 ounce sugar free smalls you can forget about it. They're too short. But the 10 ounce tins no problem. You'll easily fit all 3 in there with room for more. Have fun.
Question: do you really not use oil? do the metal shavings build up without the oil
Answer: No these are for hand sharpening.
Question: where is this stone manufactured
Answer: Yes, as I use them very effectively for all my hardened steel cutting edges such as plane irons, chisels, router and shaper bits and lathe tools.
Question: I just want to confirm that these diamonds are electroplated to the metal substrate and now glued
Answer: Yes but they are very small... maybe an inch wide and 3 inches long. I am guess you need a bigger diamond "stone."

SHARPAL Diamond Sharpening Stone-the fastest and most effective way to sharpen an edge!

There is a ‘break-in’ period for diamond sharpeners. When first use, the surface will appear to be especially rough. This roughness is due to the final manufacturing process and will be removed over time without impacting performance. As the diamond surface wears down, more and more diamond grits are exposed and the sharpener cuts faster.

Dual-Grit Diamonds

Always made with high quality monocrystalline diamonds

  • Coarse 325 grit (45 micron) - Quick sharpening the dull & damaged blade or reset the edge on your knife blade or tool.
  • Extra fine 1200 grit (9 micron) - honing

Angle Pyramid

  • Each integrated with 4 universal angles-14°, 17°, 20°, 25°
  • Patent pending design to ensure exact angle regardless of blade size
  • Magnetic base securely applied to sharpening stone of ferrous metal construction

More Sharpening Surface

Conventional 8 inch stone measures 2.5 inch in width, while Sharpal's is 3 inch in width to allow use of full surface for wider knives and tools.

Sharpening stone weighs 2.4 pounds net for durable and reliable use.

Non-slip Rubber Pad

Includes storage box with non-slip rubber pad that can be used as a stone base while sharpening

Angle Pyramid Sharpening Angle Guide makes sharpening blade edge like a pro!

You need to know what angle works best for the type of knife that you’re working with. Doing this by feel and without a sharpening guide is extremely difficult to get right with little experience and probably ruins your blade. This patent pending sharpening angle guide integrated with 4 angles-14°, 17°, 20°, 25° helps set the desired angle at the beginning.

Note: The sharpening angle guide does NOT move with the blade.

Common Sharpening Angles:

  • Pocket Knives 20° per side
  • Hunting Knives 25° per side
  • Fillet Knives 17° per side
  • Tactical Knives 25° per side
  • Euro/American Kitchen Knives 20° per side
  • Asian Kitchen Knives 14 or 17° per side

Note: Consult with the manufacturer of your knife or inquire at a knowledgeable knife shop to determine what angle is exactly appropriate for your knife.

Answer: We offer 3 years warranty and strive to provide 100% satisfaction guarantee. We will send you a new replacement or a full refund if it is within our 3 years warranty policy. We do not have access to your order information through the Q&A area. Therefore, please contact us either from Amazon messaging system or write us at [email protected] Thank you for your order and trust in SHARPAL.
Question: can you use these for sharpening wood carving tools
Answer: Hey there! I’ve sharpened and flattened quite a bit on this stone...dry...and it seems just fine. That said, I do brush it occasionally when sharpening as the metal doesn’t simply vanish into nothingness and can build up, but it works wonderfully. Worth noting that I use at a hobby level not a production level so I’m not sharpening things hourly/daily. Nothing wrong with a little oil too.
Question: Can you use them to sharpen nippers
Answer: It’s made in Shanghai, China. Says right on the packaging under the “item #156” on the lower rear. The packaging is misleading, it has this American flag logo that says “Designed and engineered in the USA, manufactured to SHARPAL quality standards”.
Question: Has anyone used these to sharpen circular saw blades and if so how well did they perform
Answer: Yes. Industrial monocrystalline diamond is electroplated onto a steel base.

User questions & answers

Question: It says no need for oil? Would honing oil still be recommended or do you typically use these dry
Answer: No. They seem pretty well attached.
Question: Does this system work on straight razors
Answer: Yes Scott, they can be used for sharpening a multitude of different tools. Hope that help. Feel free to contact us. Thanks, Wood Tech Ent Inc.
Question: Would this be a good sharpening system to keep blades that are already sharp at their peak sharpness? Good for in between full sharpening
Answer: Yes
Question: With the interrupted pattern, can you use your hand to sharpen chisels and plane irons like you can on water and oil stones
Answer: I sharpen a variety of tools using these. However, I believe you could use them to sharpen a circular saw blade you would still need the device to make sure your offset angles on the blade remain consistent. If you could hold the tool steady it would sharpen them. I use them on pruners, axes, knives, hoes, shovels, and others. I only buy the DMT brand as they contain much more diamond abrasive then the cheaper imported versions.

Question: What is the angle range on this sharpener
Answer: I've always use just water. Then use a Scotch-Brite pad to scrub the Nella particulates off the stone. I had one that lasted for 10 years plus. I only bought this one to replace it because I dropped it off the counter and a cracked. I would not use pony oil or any type of cutting oil with the stone just tap water works the best. The stone I originally had lasted those 10 years I probably filleted tens of thousands of fish from albacore bluefin tuna to giant Pacific halibut working on a charterboat and owning one
Question: Have you received extra-extra fine diamond stone with this order? Thanks
Answer: NO The finest side is as coarse as I would use to remove chips on a straight razor. Sharpening starts at 4000 grit, and gets finer from there. You also want a continuous stone as the holes cause problems with as fragile an edge as a straight razor has.
Question: How well does this kit compare to the Lansky diamond kit
Answer: That depends on how sharp you want your blade. If you want a very fine edge, you'll want to use something with a much higher grit. This particular item is good for creating an edge with micro-serrations; which is pretty good for every day kitchen needs. So you have to judge if your knife needs sharpening and the 1200 grit is high enough for your needs. Personally, I used to use a Rada non-serrated blade for bread cutting, and the 1200 grit put a good edge on it for cutting just about every bread I tried it on, as well as most other soft and medium foods. if you really want something to keep your blades sharp after every use, go with a good Arkansas stone or something in the 4k+ grit range, but I use the DuoSharp on a regular basis for my non-japanese knives and it works very nicely every couple of weeks to bring them back to sharp from moderate.
Question: On a knife such as an 8 in chefs knife will this product hold a consistent angle on the edge from heel to pioint
Answer: Yes. It works superbly. The interrupted pattern collects the fine filings and helps keep the diamond surfaces from getting filled in. I still use a bit of water on this stone and it works great. The fine/extra fine is great for maintaining working tools like keeping wood chisels sharper than most razors. The coarse/extra course is better for battered blades. The interrupted pattern only becomes an issue when trying to sharpen very small tools. The pictured duosharp has a small continuous area on an end for handling small sharpening tasks - like fish hooks or awl points. The holder has a handle on the underside so that I can sharpen some blades that are easier to work when vised. This is really handy for making long razor sharp edges. 'Stones' swap out by unclipping them from the bottom. The handles are build to hold 8" and 10" duosharp stones.

User questions & answers

Question: How flat is it? Is it flat enough to true up a waterstone? To put it another way, can it be a smaller/cheaper version of the DMT lapping plate
Answer: Depends on the width of the blade you are sharpening. .5" blade range is 17 to 44 degrees, 1" blade range is 16 to 40 degrees, 2" blade range is 14 to 34 degrees, 3" blade range is 13 to 29 degrees and for a 4" wide blade the range is 12 to 25 degrees.
Question: is this 3 stones in one package or just one? because the picture is three stones
Answer: The kit comes with the blue, 45 micron, red, 25 micron, and green, 9 micron, stones. The extra-extra fine stone is the tan, 3 micron, which does not come with the standard kit. I ordered the tan and an extra-extra coarse, silver, separately. I actually use the extra-extra coarse stone most often to set the edge angle and quickly roll over an initial burr all along the edge. My old shoulder won't take a lot of repetitive motion in a short time any more! The tan, extra-extra fine is great for putting on a real fine edge. I found this kit and the additional diamond stones to be well worth the money for sharpening my pocket knives and for sharpening my buddies knives in deer camp. The stones in the kit will get the job done with a little more effort. Remember to let the stones do the work, as bearing down too hard can remove some of the diamonds from the stone.
Question: Many of the reviews mention using this to flatten wetstones. Can I just use this to sharpen plane irons directly
Answer: I have both kits, and the cut quality of the DMT is better than the Lansky in my opinion, especially when you get to the finer grits. But the aluminum Lansky clamp is a little better than the plastic DMT one.
Question: What grits are the "coarse" "fine" and "extra fine" equivalent to
Answer: The answer gets kind of complicated. The aligner holds a consistent angle, yes, however, the geometry of the tip of the knife, the curve if you will, results in a compound angle between the knife edge and the diamond stone, so the actual angle continuously varies on the curve at the tip. This device does do a good job on knives up to 6 inches or so. Much beyond that length, it just takes a long time to work the edge and the process becomes awkward as the weight of the knife becomes more of a factor. Of course, you can always use the stones freehand on the larger knives. I just hold a large knife with my weak hand and tip the blade until it looks like the existing grind angle is flat and then hold the stone flat and work the edge. It is not as complicated as it sounds and touches up a slightly dull edge quickly. For really dull large knives, I use a Chef's Choice electric sharpener to restore the edge and then touch up as needed. I hope this helps.

Start with a coarser grit and work to finer grits.
