14 best diamond sharpening stones

Diamond sharpening stones are specialized tools used for sharpening a variety of cutting instruments, such as knives, chisels, scissors, and woodworking tools. These sharpening stones are known for their durability and effectiveness in maintaining a sharp edge on blades. Here's what you need to know about diamond sharpening stones:

  1. Diamond-Coated Surface: Diamond sharpening stones feature a surface that is coated with industrial-grade diamond particles. Diamonds are one of the hardest materials on Earth, making them ideal for sharpening and honing blades effectively.

  2. Variety of Grits: Diamond sharpening stones come in a range of grit sizes, similar to traditional sharpening stones. Coarse grits (e.g., 200 to 400) are used for quickly reshaping damaged or very dull edges, while finer grits (e.g., 1000 to 8000) are used for honing and refining the edge to razor-sharpness.

  3. Longevity: Diamond stones are known for their longevity and resistance to wear. They tend to stay flat and maintain their cutting ability over time, which can be an advantage compared to traditional stones that require flattening.

  4. Versatility: These stones can be used for sharpening a wide range of tools, including kitchen knives, hunting knives, woodworking chisels, plane blades, and even gardening tools.

  5. Water or Oil Lubrication: Some diamond sharpening stones can be used with water as a lubricant, while others are designed to be used with honing oil. It's essential to follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding lubrication.

  6. Ease of Use: Diamond sharpening stones are relatively easy to use, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced sharpeners. They typically require less maintenance and soaking time than traditional water stones.

  7. Cleaning and Maintenance: To maintain the effectiveness of a diamond sharpening stone, it's essential to clean it regularly. Use a brush and water (or oil, depending on the stone) to remove metal particles and debris from the surface.

  8. Flatness: Diamond stones are known for their flatness, which is crucial for achieving consistent and precise sharpening results. Some models come with a base or holder to keep the stone stable during use.

  9. Safety: When using diamond sharpening stones, it's important to take safety precautions. Ensure that the tool you are sharpening is securely held, and follow proper sharpening techniques to avoid accidents.

  10. Availability: Diamond sharpening stones are widely available in stores specializing in hand tools, kitchen supplies, and home improvement. They are also available online, providing a convenient way to purchase them.

In summary, diamond sharpening stones are effective and durable tools used for sharpening a wide range of cutting instruments. They are known for their long-lasting diamond-coated surface, versatility, and ease of use. Regular maintenance and proper technique are essential to ensure that these sharpening stones continue to perform effectively.

User questions & answers

Question: what is the base made from? Nickel? And could i use Trend abrasive lapping fluid
Answer: The base is made from nickle-plated steel. The best lubricant to use for diamond stones is Krud Kutter. Krud Kutter is inexpensive and can be found at most hardware stores. Windex or any all-purpose cleaner like Fantastic, Formula 409 ect all work well but Krud Kutter is the best. You can use an expensive lapping fluid but these are much cheaper options that work just as good or better.
Question: Why does this set cost so much more than the ultra sharp ii set
Answer: This set is 8 x 3 inches and includes the Universal Stone Holder. The Ultra Sharp II set is 6 x 2 inches and does not include a stone holder.
Question: Are these mono or poly crystalline diamonds
Answer: Ultra Sharp Sharpeners are made of micronized monocrystalline diamonds which results in faster sharpening speeds and greater durability than fragmented polycrystalline diamonds. The key aspects of Ultra Sharp stones are the quality of the diamonds, the carefully graded particle size, and the dense, even distribution of the diamonds on the stones. This combination of features makes the stones consistently reliable, durable and an exceptional value.
Question: Where are these made, usa, china
Answer: Being as anything about where these stones are from has been rather elusive and it's not on the package or stones anywhere(that's a first) I'm going to say it's safe to assume China.

User questions & answers

Question: Does this work as a lapping stone for flattening waterstones
Answer: Not sure but I think it would. Since its a diamond stone it stays flat. I don't know what the grit of a lapping stone would be compared to the diamond stone.
Question: What country produce this diamond sharpening plate
Answer: China
Question: Must you use a lubricating fluid or can you sharpen with the stone dry
Answer: You must use some type of fluid to float the metel particles away from the abrasive surface. Don't use water or the plate can rust. I use ammonia based window cleaner. The fluid serves the same purpose as water when using a water stone.
Question: Does the stone have clearing channels on the 1000 side
Answer: no. The 1000 side is smooth. Be sure to use the trend sharpening fluid and the stone will cut the steel quickly and sharp quickly. Even on A2 steel.

User questions & answers

Question: How thick are the plates
Answer: 8.25 mm or 0.325 inches
Question: How are the diamonds bonded. Adhesive or electroplating
Answer: I do not know but looks glued to me - so far no failure on it
Question: Do theses require honing oil, or can they be used dry
Answer: They can be used dry. Diamond stones are not porous like other whet stones so the oil would just float along the surface. Some oils like vegetable would just gum up anyway.
Question: Will these work with the edge pro apex
Answer: I do t think so

Question: How do i make a warranty claim? the grit came off the stone completely when i was sharpening. i would like a refund
Answer: We offer 3 years warranty and strive to provide 100% satisfaction guarantee. We will send you a new replacement or a full refund if it is within our 3 years warranty policy. We do not have access to your order information through the Q&A area. Therefore, please contact us either from Amazon messaging system or write us at [email protected] Thank you for your order and trust in SHARPAL.
Question: do you really not use oil? do the metal shavings build up without the oil
Answer: Hey there! I’ve sharpened and flattened quite a bit on this stone...dry...and it seems just fine. That said, I do brush it occasionally when sharpening as the metal doesn’t simply vanish into nothingness and can build up, but it works wonderfully. Worth noting that I use at a hobby level not a production level so I’m not sharpening things hourly/daily. Nothing wrong with a little oil too.
Question: where is this stone manufactured
Answer: It’s made in Shanghai, China. Says right on the packaging under the “item #156” on the lower rear. The packaging is misleading, it has this American flag logo that says “Designed and engineered in the USA, manufactured to SHARPAL quality standards”.
Question: I just want to confirm that these diamonds are electroplated to the metal substrate and now glued
Answer: Yes. Industrial monocrystalline diamond is electroplated onto a steel base.

SHARPAL Diamond Sharpener-the fastest and most effective way to sharpen an edge!

There is a ‘break-in’ period for diamond sharpeners. When first use, the surface will appear to be especially rough. This roughness is due to the final manufacturing process and will be removed over time without impacting performance. As the diamond surface wears down, more and more diamond grits are exposed and the sharpener cuts faster.

The DMT Difference

Uniformity: DMT uses micronized monocrystalline diamonds, precisely sized for a more uniform diamond surface. No other diamond sharpeners offers micronized monocrystalline diamond and most offer the lesser grade poly-crystalline diamond. Mono-crystalline is like an ice cube made up of one particle holding its form while poly-crystalline is like a snow-cone made up of many small particles that get sheared off during use.

Coverage: DMT’s process assures the most diamonds per square inch in the industry providing a more durable sharpening surface.

Surface Flatness: DMT bench stones are engineered flat, assuring even contact with the knife or tool.

Choice of Diamond Surfaces

Interrupted or polka dot surface for which DMT is famous has slightly recessed holes that will collect metal fines (swarf) removed during sharpening to prevent loading. Fast sharpening action; not recommended for pointed or very small tools.

Continuous surface presents a more conventional looking sharpening surface. Fast sharpening action; able to use on small surface edges.

HardCoat, DMT’s newest proprietary surface, is able to withstand the rigors of ceramic sharpening, providing an even longer service life to the sharpener.

DMT Commitment

DMT is committed to providing the best diamond sharpeners in the marketplace. If the sharpener is found to be defective, we will replace it.

About Sharpening with DMT

There is a ‘break-in’ period for your diamond stone. Initially, it will feel especially rough but will smooth over time without impacting performance. Let the diamonds do the work; just light strokes with the edge to sharpen, same number of strokes each side. Approximately 5 or 6 strokes per side (depending upon condition of edge) compared to 30 strokes per side on a conventional stone, saving time and extending the life of the knife or tool. Start with a coarser grit for damaged or dull edges and work to finer grits. The work the edge is to do will help you determine the grit needed: Rough work, end with coarse grit (cutting cardboard); finer work, work through finer grits (food preparation).

A Sharp Knife is a Useful Knife

The USA made Lansky system is perfect for outdoor sporting, kitchen or workshop knives, and Lansky offers the widest range of accessories available. In production for over 35 years, the Lansky Sharpening System has been the preferred sharpening system for DIY and cutlery enthusiasts worldwide.

User questions & answers

Question: Can you get the stone wet. I would like to use it to lap water stones flat. Will it work
Answer: Might, water shouldn't hurt it a bit.
Question: After first use, it lost its grit. Is this normal
Answer: I agree with you does seem to lose its grit but nonetheless, I find it still sharpens knives quite effectively! Also discovered when I examined the stone when I first got it seems to be somewhat uneven dealing with the surface texture. But nonetheless losing some of the grit as you have mentioned I believe is normal. Also, I recommend for the stone an item called "Diamond lapping fluid" by trend. Very effective.
Question: What is the best way to clean this plate
Answer: I've been using diamond "stones" for years and have Never used a "special honing fluid" - unless that fluid is, infact, water. Diamond stones, if correctly manufactured, are a substrate of some kind of metal with "embedded" industrial diamond/dust. ALL that is necessary is some water to A) facilitate swarf flushing/removal - metal filings from sharpened item and B) keeping item cooled and "lubricated". Since I haven't tried this specific brand yet, I can't determine if this is a good or not so good "stone", but I can lend insight on how to utilize any diamond stone. First, find a comfortable place to put the stone - a place that getting a bit wet will Not be adversely affected. Using a piece of something that that will resist movement - I use a piece of silicone toolbox liner material - place the stone (lower - coarsest - grit # up - if this item is in need of more than just a touch up) on top of the "sticky" material. Using a bowl of warm water (temp doesn't mater except to your fingers) put a couple if drippy finger full of water on the stone. Using the proper(ish) angle for your item (knives, chisels, etc have different sharpening angles) draw the item toward you then away from you (on the stone) until you have the edge defined to your liking. While defining your edge, rinse the stone with several fingerfuls of water every couple of strokes. Remove stone from pad, throughly rinse and place back on the pad with the largest number up (finest grit). Repeat drawing the item toward and away from you - as above- several times to "hone" the blade. If further honing is desired consider a leather strop and polish grit. Hope this helps!
Question: why does it have a hexagon pattern
Answer: The indentations (hex pattern) are to allow for a place to collect the metal filings removed from the blade as you sharpen. This way they do not interfere with the sharpening process. This is more noticeable when you use a lubricant during the sharpening process. Excellent product, I love it.

Safety Rated

Save hundreds of dollars in the purchase of new knives by revitalizing your existing ones. Whether you are a professional or occasional chef, an active outdoor/camping person this is the one of the must-have tool. A sharp blade is predictable. When it strikes or is drawn across the food’s surface, it won’t slip. With a dull knife, it’s only a matter of time until you badly cut yourself.

How to use:

1. First place the diamond sharpener stone on the platform.

2. Sharpen the knife in one or two steps depending on how blunt the knife is.

Step 1: Coarse grinding. Suitable for sharpened or severely damaged blades, suitable for blunt tools.

With the 400 # diamond grinding surface upwards, use a small force on the grinding surface to grind the blade back and forth at an angle of 15-30 degrees.

After the sharpening this time, it generally takes half a year and then roughened again.

Step 2: Fine grinding. This is a necessary step. It is used to eliminate the burr on the blade, making the blade smooth and brighten.

With the 1000 # diamond grinding surface upwards, use a smaller force than step 1 on the grinding surface to grind the blade back and forth at an angle of 15-30 degrees.

Under normal circumstances, it is recommended to use it once a week or daily to keep your knife sharp.

Step 3: After the knife is sharpened, wipe it with a damp cloth or rinse with water, then dry it. Clean the surface of the sharpener with a soft brush to keep it clean.

User questions & answers

Question: Is there anything to do for breaking it in
Answer: Rob Cosman addressed this in a video. As another answer here shows, yes you do break it in. Take any flat piece of steel and simply swirl it around the surface (water lube) to even out the stone.
Question: Is there anything to do for breaking it in
Answer: It says to run a piece of steel over it on both sides to break off stray diamonds. I just sharpened a junk chisel
Question: Why does the picture say flat don’t apply pressure
Answer: It is flat. You are supposed to put the stone on a level surface and apply light pressure to sharpen. This stone is over a 1/4" thick so it shouldn't bend or anything.
Question: Is the diamond particles glued or electric bonded
Answer: I belive electroplated. Check always the manufacturer advise

From S SATC Experts

  • Yes, we strongly recommend you initialize your stones ONLY for first-time use. All you need to do is gently rub both sides with a piece of flat steel for about 30 seconds and then clean off both surfaces. THIS is to remove the loose diamonds and Only to do this for the very first-time use!

How to sustain the lifespan of my diamond sharpening plate?

  • Diamond plates are super easy to maintain. After each use, clean the sharpener with running water and a soft brush. Remember to dry out the plate and store it in a cool, ventilated place.

Should I use my diamond sharpener dry?

  • We DO NOT recommend using it dry because chips have to go somewhere. You could hone with some plain water or lapping lubricants. And always remember to dry out the sharpener after each use because water will rust the steel underneath. Diamond plates work best with appropriate lapping lubricant which we are researching and developing right now and will be available any time soon.

User questions & answers

Question: where does it ship from
Answer: I believe the last time I ordered a pair, they were shipped to me very quickly from Chicago, but that may simply be a case of where they were temporarily stored. I bought several lapping discs and other sets of diamond plates several years back, and they got here within 3 weeks. Shipping was from Hong Kong and from Singapore. Obviously, I like to play with lapidary tools, so i know my diamond faced surfaces pretty well. The quality of these is meant for sharpening standard cutting tools. Knives, lawnmower blades, ect... this is not meant for gemstone cutting and polishing, as the quality is too poor. This is not to say that they are useless!! They work great for putting a working edge on knives, chisels, and hand plane plane blades. I do the finished edges with my set of diamond plates that go from 1000 to 3000 grit, followed by my 10,000 grit ceramic polishing stone. I can easily shave dry with my knives.
Question: Can I put an oil down or some type of lapping fluid with the stone
Answer: It's always a good idea to use oil, lapping fluid or even water.
Question: can I lap my ceramic stone
Answer: This isn't rigid enough to put a flat surface on your ceramic stone. It will flex to conform to the ceramic stone. However, it may work if you support the diamond plate with a rigid backing.
Question: One of two I bought started flaking off. Anyone else with this issue
Answer: I haven't had the problem of flaking, but consider these are polycrystal, not monocrystal so they are not going to last as long. For the price they're ok, but if you want a longer lasting diamond stone go with a monocrystal stone bonded directly to nickel. These bonded to inexpensive plate steel with plastic in between.

User questions & answers

Question: Will it sharpen basic scissors and i have some husky scissors in which one of the blades is titanium. is this rod capable to sharpen
Answer: Yes, no problem. It helps to wet grind. Hold they blade at the proper angle and pull towards you while sliding left or right to cover blade length. Finish by lightly polishing side face to remove burr (wire edge). Titanium will tend to clog diamond grit, wet cutting reduces this.
