3 best belt knife sharpener
A belt knife sharpener is a handy tool used to sharpen knives and other bladed instruments, such as scissors and shears. It typically consists of a set of abrasive belts that rotate on a motorized system, providing a convenient and efficient way to sharpen various cutting tools. Here are some key points about belt knife sharpeners:
Abrasive Belts: Belt knife sharpeners use abrasive belts made of various materials, such as aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, or diamond abrasives. These belts are available in different grits, allowing you to choose the level of coarseness for your sharpening needs.
Motorized System: The sharpening belts are mounted on a motorized system that rotates them at a consistent speed. This automation makes the sharpening process easier and more efficient compared to manual sharpening methods.
Angle Guides: Many belt knife sharpeners come with angle guides or presets to help maintain the correct sharpening angle for the blade. This ensures that you achieve a consistent and precise edge on your knives.
Variable Speed: Some models offer variable speed settings, allowing you to control the sharpening speed. This feature can be useful when working on different types of blades or when you want to control the sharpening process more precisely.
Safety Features: Safety is a priority with belt knife sharpeners. They often include features like a safety switch, which prevents the sharpener from operating if not properly assembled or if the user's hand is too close to the belts.
Versatility: Belt sharpeners can be used for a wide range of cutting tools, including kitchen knives, hunting knives, pocket knives, scissors, and more. This versatility makes them a valuable tool in many settings, from the kitchen to the workshop.
Ease of Use: Belt sharpeners are generally easy to use, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced sharpeners. The automated process simplifies the sharpening task and can produce consistent results.
Maintenance: Regular maintenance of the abrasive belts is essential to ensure consistent and effective sharpening. Belts may need replacement over time due to wear and tear, but replacement belts are typically readily available.
Compact Design: Many belt knife sharpeners have a compact and countertop-friendly design, making them easy to store when not in use.
Cost and Quality: The cost of a belt knife sharpener can vary depending on its features and build quality. Higher-end models may offer more advanced features and durability, while budget-friendly options can still provide effective sharpening.
When using a belt knife sharpener, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions for safety and proper sharpening techniques. Over-sharpening a knife can remove too much material and shorten its lifespan, so it's important to use the tool with care and precision.

User questions & answers
Question: | how about sharpening gut hooks on hunting knives...how hard is this to sharpen |
Answer: | I haven"t used it for that. I don't think it would work very well for sharpening the gut hooks. It does a great job on the knife blades though. |
Question: | Will this sharpen Japanese chef's knives that have a 30° (15° per side) angle |
Answer: | Most of my kitchen and pocket knives are Shun and Al Mar Japanese knives. Received Work Sharp yesterday and all my knives (35+) are now sharpened and even polished with 6000 grit. The way the sharpening belt bends allow sharpening the 30deg edges with ease. I am way past the ritual of "perfect sharpening" the long difficult traditional way. With Work Sharp all my knives are as sharp or sharper than ever. It is so easy and convient while watching TV or listening to NPR radio to slide the blades through, wish I bought this 10 or 15yrs ago. It has always been a hassle to get out all the sharpening stones and tools, NO MORE! Happy Trails |
Question: | Anyone know how this model differs from the ken onion edition for $130? is this model nearly as good at |
Answer: | Hello Stephanie, There are 3 major differences between the Ken Onion Edition Knife and Tool Sharpener and the Original Knife and Tool Sharpener: 1. Angle Guides: Ken Onion Version is adjustable from 15°-30° (in 1° increments) (Original KTS has 2 guides available, 20° and 25°) 2. Belts: Ken Onion Version uses premium ¾” x 12” Norton Norax belts (Original KTS has ½” x 12” abrasive belts) 3. Motor: Ken Onion Version has a variable-speed heavy duty motor (Original KTS can be run on Intermittent or Full power, non-variable) |
Question: | How well does this work on mower blades |
Answer: | No. The belts are too thin. You will wear out many belts to get just 1 blade sharp. This is a small knife sharpener, I wouldn't sharpen anything bigger than a kitchen knife or scissors. The sharpening belt is about 1" wide and paper thin. I wore out 2 med and 2 fine belts sharpening about 10 knives when I first got this machine. It works good but it is not built for things like shovels and mower blades. I am not sure I would sharpen a machete with it. |
