14 best abrasive finishing compounds
Abrasive finishing compounds are products used in various industries and applications, including metalworking, woodworking, and automotive, to improve the surface finish of materials. These compounds contain abrasive particles suspended in a binding agent and are applied to workpieces to achieve smoother, more polished surfaces or to remove imperfections. Here's what you need to know about abrasive finishing compounds:
Types of Abrasives: Abrasive finishing compounds can contain various types of abrasive particles, including aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, diamond, and others. The choice of abrasive depends on the material being worked on and the desired finish.
Applications: These compounds are used for a wide range of applications, such as sharpening tools, polishing metal, finishing wood, and buffing automotive finishes. They are essential for achieving precise and high-quality surface finishes.
Polishing and Buffing: In metalworking and automotive industries, abrasive finishing compounds are often used in conjunction with buffing wheels to create a mirror-like shine on metal surfaces. They are applied to the workpiece, and the friction with the rotating buffing wheel produces the desired finish.
Honing and Sharpening: In tool maintenance, abrasive finishing compounds are used to hone and sharpen cutting tools, such as knives, chisels, and woodworking plane blades. They help remove small burrs and restore the sharpness of the edge.
Grinding and Sanding: In woodworking and metalworking, abrasive compounds can be applied to grinding wheels or sandpaper to improve their abrasive properties, allowing for smoother material removal and better surface finish.
Grit Sizes: Abrasive compounds come in various grit sizes, ranging from coarse to fine. Coarser compounds are used for material removal, while finer compounds are employed for polishing and achieving a smooth finish.
Lubricants: Some abrasive finishing compounds require the use of a lubricant, such as water or oil, to work effectively. The lubricant helps reduce friction, prevent overheating, and flush away debris.
Safety Precautions: When working with abrasive compounds, it's essential to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses and gloves, to protect against abrasive particles and dust.
Storage and Shelf Life: Proper storage is important to maintain the effectiveness of abrasive compounds. They should be kept in sealed containers away from moisture and extreme temperatures. Be aware of the shelf life, as some compounds may lose their abrasive properties over time.
Environmental Considerations: Dispose of used abrasive compounds properly, as they may contain hazardous materials or contaminants. Follow local regulations and guidelines for disposal.
Abrasive finishing compounds are versatile products that are widely used in various industries to achieve specific surface finishes, from rough material removal to mirror-like polishing. Choosing the right type and grit size of abrasive compound is crucial for obtaining the desired result in your specific application.

User questions & answers
Question: | Would this be good for a 1x30 belt sander? Would it give me hair shaving sharpness? I have a 1x30 leather belt for my sander |
Answer: | Definitely. I used it on a simple piece of leather tacked to a 2x4 as a bench strop for chisels and planer blades. After honing it on a progressive set of Lansky diamond bench stones, I charge the strop with the buffing compound to polish the bevel to an you can shave hair with. A sanding belt will work just as well, even though it isn't my preferred method. |
Question: | What is the grit of this product? In microns, please |
Answer: | I got a quick reply, which was nice, but unfortunately, the information was not remotely believable. This is what I received.Below you will find a list of our buffing compounds and there grit:· D2901 Rouge Buffing Compound - Between 1500 & 2500 grit.· D2902 Green Extra Fine Buffing Compound - Between 400 & 600 grit.· D2912 Green Fine Buffing Compound - Between 150 & 220 grit.· D2903 White Buffing Compound - Between 100 & 120 grit.· D2904 Black Buffing Compound - Between 40 & 50 grit.· D2905 Tripoli Buffing Compound - Between 60 & 80 grit.I asked again for micron sizes and they said they don't have that information. |
Question: | what are specs-- microns etc for product |
Answer: | It would depend on which one, if you are referring to the green, typically .5 microns or approx 30,000 grit |

User questions & answers
Question: | It is suitable for polishing glass |
Answer: | No, Dremel 421 polishing compound will not polish glass. |
Question: | can you use this as a final polish on agate |
Answer: | Thank you for asking your question. Our polishing compound is 400 grit and not something you would use for a finishing compound. We would recommend you get a jewelers rouge with a higher grit to do the final polish on agate. |
Question: | Can you polish Stones with this, like Lapis, Tigers eye, etc |
Answer: | It would depend on how smooth the surface is to start with. Lapis and Tigers eye are fairly soft semi-precious gems and as such should polish when freshly cut. It will not polish a rough surface and I would recommend using wet and dry sand paper in successively finer grits up to 1500 or 2000 grit, used wet, then use the Dremel Polishing compound. Good luck with your project. |
Question: | Can I use this for a feeding ramp on a 1911 45 acp |
Answer: | Technically, you cannot polish a metal surface w/o removing metal. As a machinist, the amount of metal you remove may not need to be more than .00001", (one ten millionth of an inch). However, that's to be very 'technically literal'. Gauge blocks or pin-gauges, in mold & tool making instances would be very concerned about .00001". Still, my point is that, in metal materials, one must remove a certain amount of that metallic surface in order for it to be polished. The ramp of a 1911 would likely polish up easily providing the gun maker didn't leave tool marks deeper than .0001" (one, one ten thousandth of an inch). The American measurement system in machine shop and manufacturing in general, has always made it hard to explain to someone who would typically note "one tenth of an inch" like this: 0.100. In fact, in a machine shop, if you said something like "face-off one tenth", the machinist would remove only this much material: 0.0001, which is extremely small. An average human hair is about .005". One tenth of a human hair is .0005". Therefore, "one ten thousandth of one inch is .0001", which is 5 times smaller than .0005" and about 1/50th of a human hair... I guess this is why they're trying to convert to the metric system. I retired almost 20 years ago and even then, there was a lot of resistance to converting to the metric system because the measure tools, cutting tools, blueprints, and the general machining references would all have to change. Just the machinist's standard set of measuring tools that each experienced machinist of 5 to 6 years or more, owned, would have cost well over $500 in 1980, and over $1100 in 1987. Very few of the tools purchased before 1985 included a metric scale and many still don't. I owned an advanced set of hand tools purchased over a 25+ year time span. In 1992, I was contracted to a small tool-making machine shop, which was broken into and all the tools were robbed. The company's insurance would only pay 80% of each man's replacement tool costs. I received a $4200 check and I was not very happy about it... So you can see why many American machinist don't want to switch to the metric system. It could potentially be very expensive and that's just one aspect of at least five conversion points, which the complete conversion could cost. FWIW |

Rubber Polishing Points (461, 462, 463): Blue points for finishing and polishing all ferrous metals. Removes small burrs and scratch marks left by grinding and sanding and cleans and defines grooves. Also effective on many stones and ceramics.
Polishing Wheel (520): Use for light stock removal and high luster polishing of metal and hard plastics. The wheel is impregnated with a silicon carbide abrasive and lubricant, eliminating the need for polishing compound. If, after use, the wheel becomes glazed over, renew it by gently running it against the 415 dressing stone, or a piece of sandpaper. You can also use the dressing stone to reshape the wheel. Oscillate the tool back and forth until the desired finish is obtained.
Polishing Brushes
Abrasive Brush (538): Dremel's strongest and longest lasting brush. Extra-thick nylon bristles are coated with an abrasive grit for material removal on the toughest jobs. Use for deburring metal or wood and for removing rust and paint. Do not run brush in excess of 20,000 RPMs.
Bristle Brushes (403, 404, 405): Use for light deburring, cleaning, polishing of silverware, jewelry and other precious metals; can be used with polishing compound (#421).
Carbon Steel Brushes (428, 442, 443): Versatile brush for removing rust and corrosion, polish metal surfaces. Deburr and blend surface junctures, clean electrical components.
Stainless Steel Brushes (530, 531, 532): Stainless steel brushes do not cause "after-rust" when used on corrosive-resistant materials like pewter, aluminum and stainless steel.
Brass Brushes (535, 536, 537) Brass brushes are non-sparking and softer than steel. They will not scratch soft metals like gold, copper, or brass.
Brushing Pressure
Remember, the tips of a wire brush do the work. Operate the brush with the lightest pressure so only the tips of the wire come in contact with the work.
If heavier pressures are used the wires will be over stressed, resulting in a wiping action. If this is continued, the life of the brush will be shortened due to wire fatigue.

User questions & answers
Question: | what is the medium of this compound? is it an animal fat |
Answer: | I'm not certain but it doesn't smell like animal fat. I'd say its most likely wax based. |
Question: | What is the grit number |
Answer: | Hi there, Grain is 7 microns. Feel free to ask any questions and have a nice day! Best regards, BeaverCraft support team |
Question: | Want to polish English tea kettle, crome plated over brass, using a felt buffing wheel on a Dremel tool. Is this the right stuff |
Answer: | I've never polished anything like that but my first thought is that this might be too aggressive for your application. Green compound is typically for polishing and honing tool steels in knives, planes, and chisels. See the following link for some guidance: https://www.pjtool.com/jewelers-rouge-chart/ It looks like Red Rouge or Blue All Purpose might suit your need better. |
Question: | How hard is it? I bought another brand and it is useless because it is rock hard, try to apply a brick onto leather and you’ll be doing the same thing. Is this soft enough to apply to a strop? Any brand recommendations would be appreciated |
Answer: | This is plenty soft to apply to a strop. That's what I do with it, and I've had no issues with it. Good product. |

User questions & answers
Question: | Will these head fit Dremel |
Answer: | NOT appropriate for a Dremel 290-01. That device is an engraver -which vibrates. The Dremel 290-01 is not a rotary tool (despite what the Amazon page for the tool says at the time of this writing.) These buffing wheels are designed to work by spinning not vibrating. These buffing wheels should fit any Dremel (or compatible) rotary device. |
Question: | What is the difference between green and red wax |
Answer: | Red is a supposed to be a rouge which polishes to a luster, green has cutting action. But trust me, this set sucks. Very poorly made. *** Per google - What is the difference between red and green polishing compound? GREEN = Used exclusively for Stainless Steel. Abrasive: green chromium (III) oxide. RED = Jeweller's Rouge, designed to polish without any cutting action. Safe on thin plates. |
Question: | Can these be used for general household cleaning (like counter tops, faucets etc) or will they scratch |
Answer: | They would work for grout cleaning but they would scratch the metal of faucets. They are small for a dremel and when I use them for my silver work I always have to buff after with polishing compound to get the small scratches out. |
Question: | Will these sand wood |
Answer: | Yes |

User questions & answers
Question: | What is the grit or micron on the red compound |
Answer: | According to the description, the red compound is 0.5 micron, or about 30,000 grit. |
Question: | Is each individual compound 4.2 ounces |
Answer: | Each bar is 1.4 oz will last a long time. |
Question: | can all 3 be used on the same piece of leather strop or do I need 3 different strips |
Answer: | If you really clean and scrape the whole leather piece in between each compound use then you could use one strop, but then you’re waisting compound a ton and it can take time to put each one on and take it off. So I would 100% recommend 3 different leather pieces |
Question: | why is it that the more coarse white compound can polish silver but the less coarse green compound can't |
Answer: | It's not just the size of the grit in the polishing media, it's also the hardness thereof. The aluminum in the white compound is much softer than the chromium in the green. We always used the white in our music shop to polish silver band instruments rather than the green. |

How do I use honing compound?
Any of these compounds can be applied by rubbing them back and forth on the leather or balsa wood.
Condition the leather with a few drops of oil and charge the strop with honing compound.
The waxy consistency allows it to adhere well to any substrate without powdering.
Simply rub the bar evenly on the surface like a crayon.
A little goes a very long way, so this small bar will last for a very long time.
If you find that the leather isn’t taking the compound you can sand it (the leather) down with some 100 grit sand paper.
Another method to applying the compound is to warm up the strop and compound with a hair dryer.
WARNING: DON’T GET IT TOO HOT, THE COMPOUND WILL MELT AND MAKE A MESS ALSO YOU DON’T WANT TO BURN THE LEATHER.
